Kaliwa Washington Reviews from The Last Year
I came here to leave a terrible review for the food and
I came here to leave a terrible review for the food and service but i see everyone beat me to it. It only gets two stars for the location. The food was tasteless (except for the overpowering fish sauce) and terribly presented (looked like gruel). My entree came out and got cold before the next entree came out. I started eating but the second entree got cold before the third entree came out. I had to keep asking the waitress about our food and her only response was that she'd look into it. On the way out we warned a couple reviewing the menu that the food was pretty bad but the service was worse. At least i saved them from a bad and expensive meal. Hopefully this will do the same for you.
Food was good but service is terrible.
Our waiter looked like he was stoned. We ordered appetizers that didn't come out until we were nearly finished with the main meal. We asked a server to check on the appetizers and she said she would but never got back to us. I told the waiter I was unhappy about the appetizer not coming and his only response was that "it's going to come when it comes." If you are going to charge expensive prices at a nice restaurant, please make sure your service is up to par.
Weekend date
We had an interesting dinner here at The Wharf. The avocado tempura and mango salad were superb. Service was friendly and eating outside was pleasant!
I was in DC for a family event and wanted something spicy
I was in DC for a family event and wanted something spicy yet different. Let me just say THE FOOD WAS AMAZING!!! My best friend and I were staying by The Wharf area and decided in this spot for late lunch. This was my first time eating at this establishment. The restaurant is so cozy. I bet at night it's the perfect spot for a romantic dinner if it's a first date, this place will impress!!! Service was impeccable! Our waiter was attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. The appetizers were extremely flavorful! I had never had crispy avocado tempura. The sauce on the wings was splendid... you will pick your fingers but this dish can be eaten with a fork. I had the Maryland Blue Crab Curry while my friend and her son had Pad Thai. The Maryland Blue Crab Curry KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF!!! The fresh Maryland crab had a sweet taste in combination with the spicy curry ( not too much heat, but enough to satisfy and balance with the sweet crab taste)!!! All that was missing was some bread... ( I wanted to get all that curry sauce). Everyone clean their plates!!! This is a must try!!!! You will not go wrong.
Located in the wharf, we opted to take a lyft as parking
Located in the wharf, we opted to take a lyft as parking can be difficult. The garages are almost always full and can be pricey but there is some parking near the soy museum for not too far of a walk. Cool decor inside and overall love the vibe. We made a reservation for my husband's birthday. Overall, the service was great and we loved our first set of cocktails (Mother of Dragons and Pear Me Another). Our second set of cocktails were alright but not up my alley (Gracias Pancho and Can't Feel my Face) We did the Chef's tasting menu ($49.99/person) where you pick 1 salad, 1 first bite, 2 mains and 1 side. We chose the Bibimbap, the Lumpiang Shanghai, the Pork Adobo and Shrimp Pad Thai, and the Korean Street Corn. For my husband's birthday, we chose the Strawberry cheesecake. The Bibimbap was a little lacking and bland so I was a little disappointed. Some of the vegetables were flavorful but ours was also actually missing the gochujang sauce (not super apparent in my blurry photo I took). The lumpiang was delicious so I do recommend that. The pork was very tender but the sauce was incredibly salty. The rice that came with it ~ the top was a little dry where you were almost eating some hardened grains but otherwise ok and tempered some of the saltiness but the sauce was just too salty for my liking. We both did really enjoy the Shrimp Pad Thai. The Korean Street Corn was good but there were these large slices of red peppers which was a little strange. I wish they had perhaps diced some up instead of leaving the larger pieces. Everything came out fairly quickly and most good, some dishes were alright but I think I would come back to try some of their other dishes.
Honestly, pretty pleasantly surprised about this place.
Food is flavorful, despite a large fusion of cuisines l Is it I know I saw him. restaurant was beautiful honestly services is good but it was a very busy night so we waited 45 minutes for our reservation
So sorry Kaliwa.
... This is a miss on all levels. This was a third attempt in one month to get seated at a table, the first time reservations were needed, then they didn't have enough staff (on a Saturday) and the place was empty, Well this evening.... The wings were returned because they were cold. The server didn't apologize or comp us a desert. When the wings were returned, they were still room temperature, and i wonder if they were frozen battered wings, soaked in sweet sauce. The pad Thai was not hot, and flavorless. It was barely touched and i would think that the server would ask if everything was okay. From a business perspective, I wonder if staff are empowered to make certain the patrons are content with the quality of the food or how feedback is provided to the kitchen. The ambiance is rain forest / meets safari modern day eclectic.
This food is not fresh.
The salad was overdressed. The beef and Kim chee was just terrible. There was a tablespoon of unflavorable overcooked beef. The curry was flavorless and bland. The rice was mush. Service was mediocre. Even after saying something they should have done something. I will never come back here and also there are several service surge fees on top of tax. Beware
Oh man.
.. such a bummer. We missed the fireworks at 8:30pm which we were looking forward to on Saturday of Easter weekend because we had reservations at 7:15pm, but were seated at 7:50pm. That was the icing on the cake for me because we arrived before 7:10, waited outside and watched people come after us (since there were 3 staff outside - 1 gentleman host, 1 gentleman doorman and 1 lady host/server) so we observed and saw parties seated before us. By 7:40pm, I was already at the host stand and the host was apologetic saying some people outstayed their welcome, but our server just basically said what can we do we're busy today. I guess don't overbook, let people who came later be seated first, and make families with 2 toddlers wait too long when they have reservations to begin with. They did give us free drinks, but we have money to pay for our own drinks. I did appreciate the gesture, but by the time we were seated, my husband was already in a bad mood. It's supposed to be a fun Saturday evening with the kids but when we were seated at 7:50pm, I already knew it wouldn't be as fun as it should have been. Plus, we missed the fireworks which we were looking forward to. I have been craving chicken inasal and that was my main course. My husband ordered the adobo and complained the whole time that the pork was not cooked and if he was sick the next day, we know why. My kids had the pancit and lumpia. They enjoyed it, but it was just ok. My chicken inasal was delicious though I must say! I enjoyed it. I can honestly say, this was the first time my husband was so upset he did not give a penny more than 20% (If you add the 8% they add to the bill which was another thing he got annoyed about). He said places with 20% service charge is better than the ridiculous 8% for operation cost. He said they should just raise their menu prices then so it's straightforward and not give suggested tips based on the total including taxes. We usually tip more than necessary, but he was so pissed he didn't even want to. Basically, it was not a good vibes meal considering the cost of the meal. Such a bummer because the ambience was nice. To sum it up, I am in charge of choosing restos, and I greatly regretted making a reservation for this one. It's not every weekend we're out of town supposedly enjoying our Saturday evening
Expensive Disappointment
Who is in control? The food all arrived at different times. Appetizers after mains, mains 15 minutes apart, 20 minute for our first drinks to arrive. And mediocre food at that--had much better pad thai at many hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurants. Curries, as other reviewers have noted, very short on contents and very much like a thin soup. Four salads offered on menu-- three of them unavailable since they ran out of lettuces. What?! Not recommended.
I've been to many places and this is the first time to see
I've been to many places and this is the first time to see Filipino and Korean resto in a prime area.Food-wise, it's legit Filipino food with a little bit of a twist, I love how the chef created the adobo and Bicol express nongreasy, garlic fried rice was made like scorched rice which might be new to some but I found it good,it's a combo of Korean scorched and Filipino style fried rice. Legit Korean fried chicken. The food portion was ok. I'll come back to try the Thai food. I recommend reserving a table, especially on weekends. Staff are the best. Highly recommended asian restaurant if you visit The Wahrd in DC.
Things had changed since we were there.
I was expecting more of an Asian Fusion but was disappointed. We got the Bicol express but when it was served, it looks more like a soupy Tom Yang. I checked the amount of pork and i counted 5 cube like cut which is about 3/4" x 3/8" in size. I was supposed to have egg plant as what is called in the menu but none. Very soupy. The good side is, there is still the hint if the Shrimp paste. Got as well the Asian burger. I should have gotten it at Burger King. During the ordering process, the waitress did not even ask how i wanted the burger cooked. 45 minutes later, it was served. The bun is soaked as if you have popped from the microwave a Frozen bun. Imagine a frozen White Castle burger. The burger us burnt and tough and worst, i could not taste any hint of any Asian taste. There seems - what appears to be cole slaw, cabbage and carrot. Well, at least there was fiew pieces if coriander. The fried is awful. Very oily as if was cooked earlier and re fried when ordered. I could have cooked myself and made the slaw for them made from asian pear, cabbage, carrots, sesame Seed and using apple cider vinegar sweetend with korean oligo syrup. The burger would have been nice if cooked medium well and with sesame oil. Pad thai is not the same pad thai we got since my made my last review. Not much Asian beer option. Kaliwa sbould be renamed in English as it spoears more American restaurant now. I am just being honest. Really disappointed. I will not recommend as an Asian Fusion Restaurant.
Just okay.
We chose to be seated at the bar so we could watch the kitchen. We didn't know that by making that choice, our service would suffer. We hardly ever saw our server, and when we did, she'd bounce over and act all breathless. Everyone kinda acted like in order to be efficient, they had to ignore you. We should have been seated elsewhere. We did catch on to the overhead orders board and saw our food being given away twice. Yay. Drinks were okay but it took a while to get them. Food was just okay. The chicken wings had a good flavor but they were cold... we watched the cook fry about 40 and let them sit there and slowly be used. In the pancit, the noodles and the veggies were overcooked and needed flavor. The bulgogi was a small serving, salty, and had the consistency of ground up meat. The street corn was good but a little spicy. Not worth the money.
A hard NO on this one.
.. the cost and the portion did it equate at ALL. Not only was the portion big enough for a child it was on the verge of being cold. I asked the waiter once the friend rice (simple dish) was received just to be sure it wasn't an appetizer portion but he confirmed what I ordered and received was correct. My niece and daughter enjoyed their meals. watermelon crush & lemonade where also pretty good. Ambiance was nci
This place is so unorganized.
I got here at 330 is 517 it took so long for the food to come out. The food was cold. They didn't have 7 items on the menu French fries being one of them. The waitress wasn't even going to tell us even though we ordered burgers that came with French fries. The manager came and said they ran out of stuff because of st Patrick's day. The reviews for this place are valid, i tried to give them a chance. Very disappointed since i came here to celebrate a birthday. The manager did give us 50% off our bill for all the inconvenience and a champagne bottle for my boyfriends mothers birthday which was really nice of him and is why i gave it 2 stars and the food for the most part was good but still wouldn't return because the service was terrible.
Pros: location, location, location.
GREAT for people watching on the wharf and enjoying a beautiful day. They have some couch life large chairs (with plush cushions) that are so comfortable. The greeter/server was lovely. I waited longer than I should have in a Friday to eat and he sat me right away and got me food very quickly. Cons: you definitely pay for the location and the location as three spring rolls are $18. The biggest cons is all the food was underpriced.. as in couldn't take a single slice. I had less of an issue with the fired rice being so bland because it felt like I was eating cleaner.. but I opted to take leftovers home to give them some at home seasoning.
Kaliwa is hands down the best spot for Thai food in SW.
Their bottomless drinks option with dinner is a game-changer, ensuring you never leave thirsty. Every dish is a culinary masterpiece, leaving you craving more with each bite. Plus, their Bib Gourmand rating speaks volumes - you know they're coming correct. Don't miss out on this gem for an unforgettable dining experience. The ambiance goes perfectly with the food.
Don't get the lemongrass chicken it's a dry half chicken
Don't get the lemongrass chicken it's a dry half chicken for $32 and the bulgogi plate had more kimchi than actual bulgogi that made everything taste like kimchi
This restaurant is on the wharf.
I went in the afternoon to meet a friend for a late lunch. The service was fast, the food was good, the portions were small. We ordered Shrimps pad Thai and Chicken fried rice. Our server was professional.
I should of read the reviews before coming here they are
I should of read the reviews before coming here they are spot in with the nastiness of this food. I never had such horrible thia style food in my life. I wasted 180 here on food that I wouldn't feed to my dog. Sadly my friend who has no palette for hood food thought it was fair. Quick way severes better food this this place and they are a style of fast food. The drink was very good tho I will say. The service was ok the waiter was nice and dis his job well. I just feel like frozen food taste better then this, I didn't even eat my meal it was that horrible . Do your self a favor and avoid the nasty good from this horrible place.
Nice dinner, unique space
Enjoyed our dinner. Drinks were very good and unusual. Food was good, but not notable. Portions were reasonable, not large. Meals are pricy for the type, would return for a happy hour?
i only came to this place during happy hour but, the food
i only came to this place during happy hour but, the food was delicious. The Korean fried chicken wings had a savory sauce and were crunchy and crispy. I also loved the bugogoi fries they had a good sauce and the bugogui was really tasty. The sliders were good but i didn't really like the meat that much. But this place must have good food if the happy hour is that delicious! The service was also really good as they check in on us from time to time.
We stopped by Kaliwa this past weekend with a group of 8.
For parties 8+, they require you to do the chef sharing menu which is family style. The restaurant wasn't busy so they offered a la carte, however we decided the family style made it easy. All of the dishes came in pairs, so it was easy since each couple had their own portions. We started with a salad and appetizer. The Filipino mango salad was meh, I wouldn't order it again. The Tuna sashimi was solid. We then ended up getting the Thai fried rice, Bulgogi, and Corn. The mains and side wasn't anything spectacular. While the restaurant wasn't that busy, our server constantly would forget our drinks. When the mains came out, they only served us one portion for the party. They realized there was a mistake and finally sent out more food afterwards. It seemed a bit disorganized here. I probably won't be coming back. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're in the mood for asian food. The only appeal they have was it's by the water at the wharf. Outside of that, nothing spectacular.
I would go again
Good and prompt service. Delicious, unique food. Fun location if you can sit outside, because it is right on the wharf overlooking the water.
Great Restaurant
Loved the experience. They accommodated our big group on a very busy day. The food was great and the restaurant environment was awesome! Overall great experience!
No crab in the crab curry
Thought the menu looked quite interesting and some dishes were pretty ok like the belly pork with eggplant. However the ‘crab curry’ for $38 turned out to be basically soup. Just sauce with the tiniest fragment of crab meat. I’ve had about fifty times more crab in a $20 crab cake. Totally misleading description on the menu. The service wasn’t great either. Overall very disappointing.
Asian fine dining
The restaurant is nicely located in the Waterfront area, and is one of the best Asian restaurant in Washington DC. The dishes are elegantly served with nice compositions of the different ingredients. Fine dining and still a relaxed and charming atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Asian food, big portions
This is a restaurant of Thai, Korean and Philippines food. There is an option of sharing menu for the table - you can choose 2 starters, 3 main courses and 1 side dish for the table. It’s more than enough :) everything is good. Various drinks menu includes wines, cocktails and even sake. Staff is polite and smiley, there are tables inside and outside, terrace is very nice.
Terrible - do not go!
Terrible, do not go, reserved table for 8 was given away to another group in front of our eyes, 5 of the dinner entry options were not available because their grill was not working for a week at this point. Spoke to their GM he was “sorry”…Basically the place could be amazing but because it’s poorly run it’s not worth your time. I should have paid attention to all those other one start reviews and selected a different place instead.
Really bad
Very disappointing . Food was mushy and tasteless. Service was good, atmosphere good, though restaurant was empty on a busy Saturday around 1.30pm
Mushy tasteless food
We went there on a Saturday afternoon around 1.30pm. The wharf area was bustling but this restaurant was practically empty. The food was tasteless and mushy. We choose the $45 per person menu. It seemed the food had been sitting out for awhile, given the quick rate it was served. Service was very courteous and atmosphere was nice. We didn’t even want the leftovers which were plentiful.
Gem of a restaurant
Fantastic food, great service, beautiful setting. Had so many lovely dishes we ordered them twice. Great outdoor seating as well. Suitable for groups of friends, work get togethers and families alike.
