Kanoyama New York Reviews from The Last Year
What a fabulous Japanese meal and one certainly goes down
What a fabulous Japanese meal and one certainly goes down in the books as an exciting meal! Kano Yama is a small restaurant, there is a main room but another small room to the right of the restaurant that was even more private. Which was where we sat, it felt like it was our private area! However we were away from the omakasa sushi bar chefs. But that was ok for us. Before we even got started with our meal, I already placed an order for a medium size tuna rib, the medium size was perfect for 6 people. This is a gigantic tuna rib where you spend your arm strength to scrap off the meat and create little seaweed stuffed with scallions and wasabi delights. We had to constantly get extra seaweed wrappers, scallions, and wasabi- however our server T did an amazing job and was so attentive to us! After our tuna rib fill, then we got started with our apps, which consisted of shishito peppers, karage chicken, agedashi tofu, hamachi kama, we also got 3 orders of the sashimi special. I have realized that I never like sushi regular or deluxe. They never have the good pieces of fish. I only get specials because I know that is the freshest and most unique pieces. The sashimi special came With miso soup and salad (which had one of the most delicious ginger carrot dressing!). Overall what a memorable and unique experience!
I had really been looking forward to trying Kanoyama based
I had really been looking forward to trying Kanoyama based on reviews. But now I think I get the answer why there was no more Michelin stars earned these two years. It was a chaotic and unsanitary sushi restaurant. The food was nothing special, with a increased price but much less food quality. We sat at the sushi bar in the back with chef's omakase. - We had a reservation at 545, we arrived at 535 and were made to wait 10 minutes at a separate table so another party can arrive and be seated at the counter together. Was told the "chef was not ready yet". - Got served a hot towel with yellow streaks on it. - The chef and server's fingers were all lacerated and looks with ringworm of the nails which was annoying for me. - Sushi part was absolutely disaster, the rice was soft and mushy and it was falling apart. - The quality across each piece were extremely inconsistent, with no cohesion from one piece to the next. The chef would often left awkward breaks in the middle. It took us three more hours to finish the whole menu. And when the second round customers arrived, we were told to leave the counter to finish our dessert. - There was a guy (amigo) kept washing the dishes behind the counter (which should done in the back of the kitchen?) The service was poor too, our server was brusque. I ordered one more bottle of the sake in the middle, they gave me at very end of the dinner. After the tax and tip, it cost $300 pp, not worth it. Very disappointed, definitely won't be going again.
Amazing Omakase! This is an extremely reasonable Michelin
Amazing Omakase! This is an extremely reasonable Michelin Star experience. The staff were very friendly and attentive. All of the food was very different yet delicious and the sushi was incredible.
Their omakase is excellent.
A la carte is good too, although the delivery is a couple notches down.
Terrible service.
I was appalled by the lack of attention we received and the fact that the waiter never stopped by our table to tell us out food would be 25 minutes after my wife and son were served.
Decent but not worth a trip or the money
The introductory miso soup was thin and tasteless and the introductory salad was typical of any cheap Japanese restaurant. The regular menu is uninspiring and nothing special. In fact, the regular sushi was no better than the sushi at Whole Foods. I brought my girl friend for a nice holiday meal and was embarrassed that I had brought her. And the service was lackluster as if the waitresses were conscripts in an army. Not worth the trip or the money.
Excellent food and service! Great place for casual dining.
The sushi combo was our favorite
Food 5/10 Very mid sushi.
Large slabs but they tasted too fishy, and it wasn't even at a cheap price either. Lowkey feel like my school cafe could do better. Was quite disappointed with what we got. The gyoza was tasty though. The sushi platter for two came with three rolls and nine nigiris. We had to dip into soy sauce ourselves, but the nigiri came with a little bit of wasabi, but I don't think it was enough to cancel out just how fishy everything was. The rice was also hard and not very flavored. Atmosphere 6/10 Typical Japanese restaurant, mid vibes. Service 6/10 It was fine I guess.
Solid sushi and easy takeout.
A but on the pricier side of things, but I've always enjoyed my meals here and staff are nice! Good place for dates or for catching up with a friend. Not really suitable for big groups.
I'd bookmarked Kanoyama here on Yelp long ago because it
I'd bookmarked Kanoyama here on Yelp long ago because it had Michelin-starred sushi. Indeed, in line with many other Michelin-starred restaurants, they have a tasting menu here - known in Japanese as omakase. This is $195 per person and is available only at reserved times, several nights a week. Fortunately, if you're watching your spending, it's not just about omakase. You can order nigiri, sashimi, and entrees a la carte, all at prices that are slightly higher than a merely average New York sushi joint, although not unreasonably so. Accessible enough, even, to be a high-quality neighborhood go-to for sushi and Japanese fare. Best of all: it's authentically Japanese as far as the chefs and staffers are concerned. With this in mind, I opted for value and variety, as is usually my case, in the form of the sushi special: 8 pieces of nigiri (including medium toro, kinmedai, shima aji, kohada, baby red snapper, scallop, squid, eel), a serving of tamago (egg), and a several sushi roll pieces. Each piece of nigiri had a beautiful, melt-in-your-mouth texture and consistency to them, and was slightly warmer than I'm used to seeing at run-of-the-mill sushi joints that serve things ice cold - which is something I've often found to be the case at quality sushi joints in Japan and at stateside restaurants run by actual Japanese folks. A couple of hand rolls helped me feel full, even after a long summer weekend day spent gorging on food citywide. Service was dignified in a Japanese way and the environment casual, with customers ranging from all walks of life, including Japanese-speaking locals of Japanese descent (yet another good sign in terms of authenticity). Bonus: not only is the dining room large, but there's also lots of tented outdoor seating here at their cornerfront venue.
Was recommended this from our sightseeing tour guide Roger.
Did not disappoint. Though they have a Michalin star, do not need to be highly dressed to get in. We walked in with no reservation and did not wait on a Sunday night. EVERY SINGLE THING WE ATE WAS AMAZING. The sushi for 2 was a great way to taste the quality of the fish. You could taste the freshness and everything was so tender (as sushi should be). The rolls that it came with was a spicy tuna, California, and salmon cucumber. Was so happy to have this as our only sushi in NY and coming from Florida, there were very few places I've been to that can compare.
Excellent service and top notch food
5 stars! excellent service, they really went above and beyond when I accidentally forgot to ask for no wasabi. Food was amazing, some of the best sushi I’ve had outside of Japan, throughly recommend. very reasonably priced as well for such high quality.
Excellent as ever!
My family has been going to Kanoyama pretty much since they opened the doors. After a short absence I have been back three times in the last few weeks and it has been excellent each time. The luster that I remember is brighter than ever!!

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
Virtual Name & Email on reservation
Hi Community,
I am new to this site and just recently bought a reservation here. I noticed that on the reservation page, it is booked under a random name and a virtual email address.
I can't find any button to change either the name or the email for this reservation I bought. So, should I just say that random name when I arrived at the restaurant? Not really sure about the procedures.
