Karasu is a Japanese speakeasy hidden behind a secret door
Karasu is a Japanese speakeasy hidden behind a secret door inside Walter's, and has been my go-to for special occasions since before the pandemic. Their art deco interior paired with dimly lit private tables create a sexy, intimate atmosphere - especially as you sip on their unique twists on classic cocktails. Order the Koji Ribeye, for sure!!! I've been to my fair share of Japanese steakhouses, and this cut was seasoned and cooked to PERFECTION. Always one of the most memorable dishes that come to mind when friends or coworkers ask for restaurant recommendations. Definitely worth the drive out from Queens or Long Island, I will continue coming for as long as they remain open.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service here.
The host/waitress even moved our table to the best seat in the house when finding out it was for an anniversary. She was so kind and the food was amazing!
Be the first to ReplyKarasu is good.
It's located within Walter's in which you have to walk through the little diner to an inconspicuous location in the back. (10/10 on creativity it's a total 180 in concept) We ordered: 1. Shishito Peppers: Love! Surprised as to how large the serving was, and they were roasted to perfection2. Roasted Sweet Potato: Highlight here was the niso butter, but would save your money because spending $14 on a normal roasted sweet potato is honestly highway robbery3. Karaage: Good, but not great. Not the worst, but not the best. Would I get it again if I visited? Maybe? Uncertain but I don't regret it4. Tonkatsu: Similar to karaage; not the worst, but no the best. It was good.Overall, it's a solid place to eat, and I do love the vibe. Four stars given that I've had much better elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyOverhyped and overrated wanna be speak easy bar in brooklyn.
karaage ?! size and taste similar to Popeyes Chicken. Also, $14 sweet potato wrap in tin foil.leaking bar table and not nice ambiance. i don't recommend
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely one of my favorite dining experiences.
We had to order seconds of some of the dishes because they were that good. This IS the first date restaurant you've been looking for. Make reservations for a friday or saturday, the atmosphere is perfect.

Who doesn't love a restaurant within another restaurant? Friend recommended this gem and it was an amazing experience. All the drinks were amazing and the small bites were delicious. I think personally if I were to come back I'd focus on the drinks and order a few sides. hamachi - favorite small bite. extremely fresh fishyaki imo - who doesn't like butter with sweet potatotuna tataki - pretty normal tuna, nothing special.chicories - delightful and crunchy lotus root. sayoko's karaage - not the best but was satisfying. a bit too much batter and overcooked.shishitos - yum. yuzu with some peppersprime ribeye for two - the koji and tosazu sauce was amazing with the prime rib. prime rib done extremely well

Everything we got was delicious and felt special (hamachi, Tuna, yaki imo, oysters). The oysters were particularly memorable- we contemplated getting a second order! Sat at the gorgeous bar, the whole place has a very sexy vibe and would be a perfect date spot.

It PAINS me to write this because pre-covid this would have been a 10 star review; alas, the post-Covid landscape has changed the character and the food of this very beautiful, hidden spot where we previously gathered for many special occasions or simply a fun evening out with friends. We are also huge Walter's enthusiasts and are always greeted warmly by staff and in truth, doted on.We walked in having made a reservation via Resy just a short time before arriving. It was marginally empty. We were greeted flatly (she simply asked us if we had a reservation) by an unfamiliar hostess who was more interested in gabbing with the server and bartender. She slapped the menus down at the bar and said nothing to us. One of those situations where there's barely any eye contact and where it appeared she may have been annoyed that we were distracting her from an important conversation. I assumed she was going to show us to a table eventually after setting it up, but nope, she returned to the corner by the kitchen with the server and our bartender. All three women chatted animatedly amongst themselves for quite sometime and save the infrequent need for someone else's attention, they would return to their corner to continue the conversation throughout the evening. I assume the bartender thought we were there for cocktails and a quick snack because we were the only ones at the bar with the exception of one other person. She greeted us with some water but we had to make eye contact with her to order cocktails. My Bee-side which came with a dried tarragon branch as opposed to the shiso leaf I had when it had just opened and many times thereafter- was fine- but it was also barely chilled. The menu is much abbreviated from the original menu which was a total and complete bummer. They had the fortitude to keep the karaage which was essentially our main course after starting with the hamachi and the tuna tataki to start at $19-22 a piece. They were delicious but consisted of less than 1 ounce of protein. Maybe. My husband had a baked sweet potato. For $14. It came unceremoniously in a wad of tin foil. Absolutely nothing to this save for the nori butter. It was also the size of a newborn kitten. Your only other options for a main is to split a $95 steak- which I've had and is delicious if not a bit fatty but it's still no value. There's also a fish which can also be split. I'm guessing they think they're making a statement with an authentic Japanese chef and a reductive menu- but it's just nothing that will keep us from returning. I left so hungry-and mourning what once was. Someone at Walter's gave us a hug- perhaps in consolation? As mentioned, I am supremely disappointed with the service and the food. To note: the runner who brought us our food and essentially compensated for any actual service was a total delight. 2 stars for him. Please get it together- I loved you before!!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent dinner with top notch service.
Tuna and himachi apps with ribeye for two and a chocolate banana bread pudding. All so amazing. And the server helped us choose the perfect sake. We will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyDidn't expect it but, Karasu was simply extremely good.
It's kind of the place to go in this area. The menu is really awesome, a lot of fantastic choices, I had to go with Tonkatsu, and it was incredible. Staff is really pleasant and definitely will help you with everything. Everything was excellent at Karasu.

I know I'm almost a year overdue, but I was feeling nostalgic for pre-COVID restaurant adventures when I realized I never wrote a review for Karasu! It's a Japanese speakeasy hidden behind a secret door inside Walter's, and where my boyfriend and I spent Valentine's Day dinner before the pandemic hit the fan. Their art deco interior paired with dimly lit private tables create a sexy, intimate atmosphere - especially as you sip on their unique twists on classic cocktails. Order the Koji Ribeye, for sure!!! I've been to A LOT of steakhouses, and this cut was PERFECTION. It was so memorable, I can't even recall the vegetable side dishes we ordered to complement it. Once it's safe to do so again, Karasu is first on the list of places I will be returning to.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely enjoyed my journey to this resturant.
Wasn't too out of the way from. The subway, but it took a bit of finding. We left early from our hotel just in case we had trouble. Luckily there was even a sign outside Walter's.It feels little awkward walking through Walter's with everyone eating, but the staff is totally used to it.The prices are a bit expensive, but the drinks and food are very good. More specifically, I enjoyed the honey old-fashioned for drink and the clams and tonkatsu the best. I don't know that I'd be back anytime soon though, it is a bit expensive!
Be the first to ReplyFirst time at karasu after watching the munchies episode
First time at karasu after watching the munchies episode featuring the chefs. Before we ordered we asked the bartender some questions on the drink menu. I asked if he could show how much 4 ounces was and he smugly replied "4 ounces". Yeah, whatever. We ordered the karaage, mushrooms, and duck confit soba. The karaage was fried well, but accompanied with some sesame oil and a spicy sauce on the side. The sauces seemed quite random and added very little to the dish. The mushrooms quickly followed but tasted bland and unmemorable. Lastly the duck confit soba came out but was lacking a lot of the "duck" aspect. The soba itself was ok but the broth the dish was served in was absolutely too salty. Furthermore, the soba was accompanied by some random pickled assortments on the side that were quite odd to consume and quite honestly could have been nixed completely. All in all, pretty small portions, odd combination choices and overly high prices make Karasu a hard pass. I really wanted to love it but truly couldn't.
Be the first to ReplyI used to love this spot, but never again.
Its gone down hill pretty quickly. Host team ignored reservation notes and had no interest in accommodating anyone with the attitude to match. They even made a guest on crutches stand to wait for her table! Food was hot trash. The edamame was overcooked to mush and the clams were a pitiful value. It was so bad we cut our visit short and went up the street to 1 Or 8.
Be the first to ReplyI've never written a yelp review before, but I can't hold
I've never written a yelp review before, but I can't hold back on this. There's a fine line between great service and over-service. Without a doubt my experience last night was so far overserviced it's (sorry for the pun) caused a dis-service to Karasu. For a 7:30 seating on a Monday night, the restaurant was fairly light in patrons, by no means were we being pushed out to turn the tables over. However the server and busboy must've stopped by our table to check in, refill water, clear plates, see if we were done eating, ask to refill our drinks, ask if we needed anything else - No joke about 50x! Fifty! I counted. There were 2 of us! on a a Monday! Chill out! Let us relax and enjoy our meal! I literally couldn't finish a conversation without someone checking in. It got to be really annoying. That it's caused me to write this review. The food was good and that's why I'm giving 2 stars but if you want a relaxing place to eat - This is not it. By the end of the night I had so much anxiety over what they were going to check in and ask next I couldn't concentrate.

Delicious!!! If you like meat, I recommend the prime rib or else the smell of someone else's prime rib will invariably make you regret missing out on that. Drinks are very nice here.
