Came here for dinner.
Got seated right away. I didn't have reservations but was given a table to sit at. Restaurant was pretty empty when I came. We got the omakase but nothing really stood out to me. I felt very rushed by the waiter who I felt was watching me the whole time waiting for me to finish so he could take our plates away. They also gave very rushed and unclear descriptions of each fish. The fish did taste fresh but really was nothing outstanding. I have had much better omakase elsewhere. Probably would not come back but was glad I got to try it.

Came here with family and friends on our NY trip for our first omakase experience. The atmosphere was pleasant but the seating was a bit tight. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. We started with the kinoko, gyoza and shrimp tempura appetizers. The mushroom-soy appetizer was the standout of the group. Very tasty and left me wanting more. The gyoza was similar to others I've tried. The shrimp tempura was perfectly made with a nice light batter. But in the end we were here for the sushi omakase. This came in 4 rounds with 3 pieces the first 3 rounds and and a hand roll to finish it off. The wasabi in the yellow fin tuna roll was a bit strong for me but the other pieces were delicate and tasted great. My standout favorites were the yellowtail, fatty tuna, trout and mackerel. I was very surprised by the Spanish mackerel since I normally find mackerel too fishy but this was really good as well. My least favorite was the uni but this was the first time I had it and it's just not my thing. The fatty tuna roll at the end was a great way to finish the meal. The sushi presentation was impressive and the freshness of the fish was notable. For a first-time omakase experience, this place comes highly recommended.

Probably best oysters I've EVER eaten. Staff is kind. Sake selection is great. I would literally marry the oysters. Nice ambiance. Good omakase options. Still thinking about the oysters omg.
Be the first to ReplyThe omakase is always consistently good.
The staff is friendly & service is good. Took away 1 star for decor (needs an update).

There are so many sushi spots in this part of Brooklyn. So, so many to choose from, we landed on this one after reading some recent reviews. During the pandemic, it seems like nobody is getting authentic in front of the sushi chef omakase experiences. Nevertheless, we had a wait after our reservation time slot and were seated shortly after in the back of the restaurant and there were so many dividers. The servers (we had like TWO of them for some reason), were confusing us left and right because they were both taking our orders and clearly English was not their primary language so there was an awkward moment here and there when they were taking our orders. The omakase here was memorable - not TOO memorable because of the environment we were in, felt a little weird. Perhaps it's the PS area that's rampant with high prices but we did not feel like we ate our money's worth. The food here was good regardless, wouldn't come back however.
Be the first to ReplyCame here after researching quality sushi in Park
Came here after researching quality sushi in Park Slope/Crown Heights. We both selected the open omakase. Overall was quite disappointed for the quality at the price point. Here are some notes from the experience:o toro - meh quality, unnecessary sauce. Our pieces were cut to completely different sizeskamasu (trout) and monkfish - Both of these pieces were blow torched and let to sit before arriving to us. The result was lukewarm and congealed fatking salmon with seaweed - salmon was creamy and paired nice with the toasted seaweed, probably the highlightbaby snapper - good quality, ruined by a dollop of lemon sauce on top that overpowered the subtle taste of the fish. Again our pieces were cut to different sizesstriped jack - quality was good, too much ponzo and green onionHokaido uni - no way this couldn't be goodchu toro - again, why slather such a quality piece of fish in sauceW one hot sake, tea, one beer, edamame, and gyoza, it came out to $370 with tip. The open style omakase was $110 for 12 or 13 pieces and the standard omakase was 9 pieces + a hand roll and almost half the price. Sure we got a couple of additional premium pieces, but I can't rationalize this price difference. A per piece omakase is supposed to feel special. Our chef was either cranking out pieces for us seemingly as fast as he could or taking long stretches away to prepare orders for the dining room. I understand this is a busy restaurant serving a full dining room, but at these prices I would have expected better.Getting quality sushi for a decent price in New York is difficult, and I was hoping this would be it. Sadly I was mistaken. Either shell out more for better or a lot less for 20% worse.

First time here, but definitely not my first rodeo on the omakase train. Very value-for-money and I appreciate the chef who served me. I did the sashimi + sushi omakase set and did some add-on's that were curated from the full omakase menu. Total came to $150 for me, which frankly is still considerably affordable compared to many many omakase restaurants in Manhattan or LA. Fish was fresh, there was good variety, the only piece I did not really enjoy was the Californian uni (I am very particular with uni anyway and tend to prefer Hokkaido). Would recommend for individuals looking for an affordable mid-to-high tier omakase option.

I came here for my 1st ever omakase and was so impressed!! The sushi was amazing - so fresh and delicious. They seated us at a regular table so we didn't get the "full" experience as I heard that being able to watch the chefs make your sushi is really cool. We got the Sashimi & Sushi Omakase and it came with quite a good amount. I felt perfectly satisfies at the end - not hungry, but not overstuffed. My friend and I also shared the Tori KaraAge for the appetizer which was good but could've used a little more flavor or sauce. Overall, the omakase was great!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing sushi.
Order the tuna wasabi appetizer... so good. Super kind servers. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyDisgusting, old sushi, be careful of getting sick.
We called the manager which was continuously unavailable. The staff basically said we were liars and katsuei sushi is fresh. WRONG it was warm, green and sickening,
Be the first to ReplyOn a quest to try every under $150 omakase in NYC.
This gets 8 out of 10. Overall pretty flawless, great rice, great fish. A more traditional style fish but still with interesting surprises.
Be the first to ReplyNice neighborhood spot.
It is usually fully booked but we were luck to get a table on walk-in. Got the regular omakase which was decent for the price. The only complaint is the overuse of sauce and dressing which made it difficult to taste the sushi.

Was looking for some good sushi in Brooklyn, and came across this place with good reviews. I personally don't think the price is up to the quality of their sushi at all, have eaten better sushi for less, will not be eating here again. The reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because their Miso Cod was on point , only thing that was worth it.

A more formal sushi experience at a slightly lower price point, but without any true stand-out items.Quality: I was happy with the meal we had at Sushi Katsuei. It is not in quite the same class as NYC's best, but it was not bad for the cost. While I wish it was done at the bar, table service was still pretty nice. I think the Sashimi And Sushi Omakase gives a good glimpse of the quality, which was solid. They are definitely more creative with the sashimi and typical with the sushi.Quantity: The Omakase options clearly delineate the portions to expect.Value: $8.50 for the Shumai. $5 for the Edamame. $77 for the Sashimi And Sushi Omakase.Ambiance: Sushi Katsuei is located in Park Slope. They have a few outdoor tables, but most of the seating is inside. It appears like they previously had bar seating, but now it is only tables. Most tables had barriers built between them, implemented during COVID. It is a casual environment, despite the higher-end experience.Crowd: Reservations are recommended as it gets crowded quickly.Service: Fast, yet elegant service. Parking: Some limited street parking.
Be the first to ReplyBest Omakase in Brooklyn.
Ingredients are fresh and chef's touch on the sushi is amazing. Price is way below compare to some of the restaurants in Manhattan with similar offers. One of the best price value Omakase in New York. You won't regret dining here for Omakase if it's your thing.

After hearing so much about Sushi Katsuei, I finally stopped in. I was in the area and had reason to celebrate so I treated myself to the $55 sushi omakase. It was four rounds - the first three were 9 pieces of sushi, and the final was a hand roll.I'm not going to remember everything I had - but the highlights were the bluefin tuna, uni, Spanish mackarel, and red snapper. All very fresh, carefully crafted, and beautifully presented. They've got both sidewalk seating, and also an atrium-ish section. Definitely lives up to the hype!
Be the first to ReplyGood local place for some authentic sushi.
Service is good and quality of food is great. Pricing is readable for the quality of food. Atmosphere and dining environment is lacking hence the 4 stars.

Fresh and delicious yet affordable omakase options? Sounds FISHY, but ROLL on up to Sushi Katsuei and you will find it. I usually go for the Sashimi and Sushi Omakase, which comes with chef's choice of 5 kinds sashimi (1-2 pieces of each), 6 kinds sushi, and a tuna based hand roll. I am not one to dine GINGERLY, so I will order sashimi a la carte of anything that was particularly good. The sushi is served on a bed of slightly sweet sushi rice; I appreciate that it is not uber sticky and cloying like other places. The staff also makes great recommendations, and if you give them an idea of what you like, they can SHOYU what to order!
Be the first to ReplyProbably one of the best sushi spot I had in New York City.
ย The service was spot on. The prices are very reasonable too compared to some other places in the city which is not even as good as this one. This is defiantly my go to special occasion spot

Really great omakase in Brooklyn (that I don't have to travel to Williamsburg for or wherever all the hot food spots are nowadays)! Katsuei is a Michelin Guide recommended restaurant, and I can understand the hype though I wasn't particularly wow-ed. I got the $57 sushi omakase, while my bf got the $77 sashimi and sushi omakase. The fish was very fresh and we loved every single bite. We felt pressured to order more and we would have (perhaps apps or a la carte) if we didn't have a second dinner planned, expecting to still be hungry afterwards, oops! For that we will return for the full experience another time.

A regular spot for my partner and I when we want to treat ourselves to a little something special in the neighborhood. The omakase is the way to go here.

Staff is friendlyThe drink waiter asked for our drinks too quickly before we had a chance to look at menu though I get that he just wanted to answer any questions we had.The m/p omakase was deliciousWe didn't leave a mess at all!
Be the first to ReplyVery good quality fish.
ย Great option to get omakase for ~50 bucks. ย It consisted of 9 sushi and 1 hand roll. ย I was still hungry after but I could have just ordered extra sushi, but I didn't. ย The toppings and sauce sometimes took away from the taste of the fish. ย My other gripe would be temperature control. ย Some pieces of sushi were like butter and same temperature as rice whereas others were really cold compared to the rice. ย I felt that they could have been more attentive to that. ย Overall, I would come back for the great quality of fish and convenient location.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced.
Used to be the nicest of the local sushi options, but since the start of the pandemic they did away with the nice ambiance and now you have an oddly arranged dining space and not much in the way of decoration, the furniture looks tired. We opted for the sushi/sashimi omakase. They lowered the prices of their omakase by about 20% but cut the serving in half, still great fish quality. Their sake selection is not premium but their prices are. And most of the staff are very nice, except the apathetic hostess/owner who greets ย customers and assigns the tables.
