Keens Steakhouse New York Reviews from The Last Year
Cool restaurant, old school style
I had a good experience at Keen’s . The decor is old school steakhouse, which I like. I had the Dover Sole which was very good albeit very expensive. The boiled potatoes that came with it were very bland. The service was prompt but the waiter did not have much of a personality. The wine list by the glass was extremely limited. Glad I went but wouldn’t rush back.

The service you provided was outstanding, it was a special night here for the first time with a good friend of mine, the steak was tender and full of flavor when put in the mouth. Will come again next time.
Excellent meat
As excellent as I remember it the last time we visited New York ( 2019). If you are a meat lover then this is a must go to restaurant. Old style establishment, excellent service, excellent food ( we had the porthouse for 3) and nice relaxing atmosphere.

Despite being a lifelong New Yorker, made my first visit to Keen's last night for a business dinner. Surprisingly busy for a summer Monday evening the service was attentive and professional. Would have preferred the tavern room but the small upstairs dinig room proved to be fine. We shared the porterhouse for two. It was an excellent cut of meat and ranked right up there with Peter Luger's however less buttery and more heavily salted which was to my liking. Iceberg wedge with bacon and tomato was very good as was the creamed spinach. Fries were nothing special. My only complaint was that the featured one pint bloody mary was served less than adequately chilled. I would return and recommend.

There were several empty tables--but the matre de elected our table next to the kitchen door. I suspect because my wife is Chinese descent. The bill for soup-salad-and porterhouse for two was $253.00. The meat did not taste like prime--it was chewy no flavor. The service was unusual when you notice so many employees running around--no one brushed the table after eating cold rolls--thats right COLD. Still in the tradition I tipped a full 20%--$50.00 cash. I doubt we will dine there ever again. Amen

Infatuation rates this place #1 steakhouse, my friend told me Anthony Bourdain considered this place his favorite steakhouse. TERRIBLE!!! We were a group of 10, the nice large circular table was very nice, the portions were small and worst of all, the steak was cold. Ughhh... normally I would've sent the steak back, but... you must envision that a table of 10, everyone already has a piece or 2 on their plate, it would've been silly to ask everyone to put their food back and send it back. Anyways, won't be coming back... their steak was also poorly charred.
See the pipes, eat the mutton chop
Keens Steakhouse opened in 1885 in New York City's Herald Square, what was then the Theater District. It became a favorite hangout for actors from neighboring Garrick Theater. Today, it is the only survivor of the Harold Square entertainment era and has become best known for its USDA prime steaks, its legendary mutton chop once touted by internationally known actress Lily Langtry and the largest collection of churchwarden pipes in the world. Located at 72 West 36th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, in Manhattan's Garment District, Keens Steakhouse seats 350 in several dining rooms with Old English decor, Home of the Pipe Club and full-service bar. Open from 11:45 to 10:30 Monday through Friday, 5 to 10:30 on Saturday and 5 to 9:30 on Sunday, it recalls the tradition of checking one's pipe at the inn which had its origins in 17th century England where travelers kept their clay at their favorite inn because the pipe was too fragile to be carried in a purse or saddlebag. Keens houses more then 50,000 clay smoking pipes, including pipes from such well-known patrons as Theodore Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, John Barrymore, Albert Einstein, Buffalo Bill Cody, Will Rogers, Adlai Stevenson, J.P. Morgan and General Douglas MacArthur. Meanwhile, the restaurant's famous mutton chop is cut from the whole loins of a mature adult sheep that was pastured in Colorado. It contains more fat and muscle, resulting in stronger flavor and tougher texture. I couldn't resist ordering a mutton chop with a baked Idaho potato and sauteed mushrooms. My wife chose authentic Dover Sole with mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and Keens creamed spinach. Oh, I almost forgot. We started with iced shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, lobster bisque and iceberg lettuce wedges with blue cheese dressing, chopped tomatoes and bacon. And we finished by sharing a large slice of key lime pie and a Banana Foster with dark rum and vanilla ice cream. Hard to beat an evening like this.
Exceeding Expectations
Keen's far exceeded our expectations. We thought it would be a traditional masculine themed steakhouse. In actual fact it is old world cosy with low ceilings, wood panelled walls and comfy banquettes. We started with a Pimm's No. 1 cup & a rose wine. Our dinner consisted of mashed potatoes, sauteed spinach, a 12 oz filet mignon which we shared & a bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir. Our meal was super simple & simply delicious. Potatoes, veg & meat never tasted so good ! We were served throughout our meal by the charming and helpful Iryna. She made us feel very welcomed.
Amazing experience
Great ambiance, very helpful and polite staff, and amazing steak. We went for our honeymoon and they offered us complimentary champaign.

Suberb steaks
This is a long established steakhouse in Manhattan. The quality of the steaks is superb, we all had fillets , all cooked perfectly rare. This is a higher end restaurant, and the price reflects this .
I was in NYC celebrating a big birthday so we ate at Keens.
The food was indescribable. We had the mutton and prime rib both were absolutely tender and had the best flavor. The want staff was excellent and explained the meat process and prep for cooking. The physical setting of the restaurant was gorgeous.
I come to eat at Keens many times.
Always very very good taste. I love the King cut. It's huge. And enough for at least two people.
Great food and atmosphere! Would go back again soon.
This is an institution in NYC a must try steakhouse.

Stopped here for a dinner on a Saturday night while staying in the city. We have been to other steak/chop places in NYC (Mastro's, Gallaghers, Benjamin) so we fully expected everything and know the drill as far as the ordering etc. Cool looking place - dark inside, dimly-lit, pipes on the ceiling, white table cloths and waiters in shirt/tie with vest. We were sat immediately with our 9:45 reservation at the usual chair/booth combo seat - my least favorite and perused the menu. Having already seen the menu I knew what to expect. We split a caesar salad to start and got a mixed drink. As for the entree we ordered the prime porterhouse for two, and added mashed potatoes and carrots. We ordered the steak medium. I will say this: if the potatoes are the best part in a steakhouse, something is wrong. The steak was VERY medium rare, parts of the steak rare. The carrots were about as normal as you could get from a frozen bag. Trying to save the meal we got dessert - I went with the chocolate cake. This was good. Overall it was just ok. For the price? Other options in NYC would be better.
Keens Steakhouse, a venerable institution in the heart of
Keens Steakhouse, a venerable institution in the heart of NYC, has earned its reputation over the years. The menu, though on the pricey side, promises a classic steakhouse experience. However, my recent visit left me with mixed feelings. Let's start with the positives. The mashed potatoes were divine--creamy, buttery, and the perfect accompaniment to the hearty steaks. The carrots, too, were surprisingly flavorful, adding a touch of sweetness to the meal. But the real star was the bananas foster dessert--a delightful finale that danced between caramelized bananas and a hint of rum. Pair it with a pot of tea for a cozy touch. Now, the steak. Ordering a filet proved challenging; the menu seemed to favor larger cuts. The steak for two did include filet portions, but the rest of the meat wasn't consistently medium as promised. Perhaps the photos will reveal the truth--I'm no stickler for steak perfection, but this felt off. The jungle bird cocktail, bitter yet intriguing, is worth a sip if you're a grapefruit enthusiast. The quirky seating arrangement--offset tables and cushioned benches--was a minor annoyance. If I could've ordered just the filet, I'd rate Keens a solid 4. Our server, despite being a tad hard to understand, tried their best, and the attentive staff made up for any missteps. In the end, Keens is a blend of tradition, quirks, and flavors--a place where the bananas foster dessert and that little pot of tea elevate the experience. I would mentioned Gallaghers Steakhouse also in NYC being one I favor if you can't get in here.
Good steakhouse
Good ambiance, beautiful place, excellent service and good food. We tried the mutton. It was ok. We had chateaubriand. It was very good.the sauted spinach was good. The best was the lobster bisque. It was a winner. I wish they had ribeye
Second excellent visit
As you’d expect from this NY mainstay the experience was fantastic. The service and decor traditional yet extravagant. The cocktails were delicious and the steaks were big and juicy enough for the hungriest of diner. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for.
Awesome food with great service. Top notch steakhouse indeed.
Service - awesome. Main server was very knowledgeable and gave appropriate recommendations. Multiple servers of food were all trained. Food - top notch steak. We got the T-Bone Steak (medium). Cooked perfectly with char on the outside. Sides: creamed spinach and french fries on the side. Just add a little bit of salt and pepper to personal likining but food was awesome.
A must visit
Looks like an old English pub from the outside and, like a TARDIS, opens up on the inside, housing its own pub and cocktail bar, with the restaurant upstairs. Great and incredibly attentive waiting staff - I don't think we ever go to the bottom of a glass of water before it was topped up. My wife had the lamb chops and I had their famous mutton chop. Both outstanding and cooked to perfection. Also, a must with both is their homemade mint jelly. We were both disappointed to find that we were too full to try their desserts. They also offer a decent selection of wine at reasonable (for NY) prices. Probably the best wine we had all holiday.
Tourist Trap from Hell
Keens steakhouse gets the award for my personal worst steakhouse in the country. The steak came out super fast, I ordered a well done steak. Bam! 10 minutes after I ordered it our porterhouse for 2 arrived cooked through and through, super dry and luke warm. The steak was obviously pre cooked. No flavor, super bland like card board. They are trying to rush you out asap, and with the bum rush service, and crap steak it shows. The table next to us, a guy sat down waiting for the rest of his party after roughly 5 minutes someone came over to him and explained he needed to start ordering or leave. He ordered appetizers, and sure enough, a couple more minutes, his family joined him. They have no patience or interest in providing you with a high-quality meal or experience. It's all about pumping customers in and out fast. I read lots of reviews and watched YouTube videos about Keens, I thought we were really in for a great experience. The joke was on us. This place is a tourist trap. If you truly think this is a good steakhouse, God bless you. If you want a good steak that is way better than Keens, may I suggest Outback, Longhorn, seriously. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. One and done. Insulting. Do they care about this review? Not in the slightest, business is good with an endless supply of tourists to provide a piss poor experience to.
I really enjoy going to Keens anytime I'm in manhattan.
.. I find the food and service always at a high level. My only knock is that the steaks need more seasoning... There is actually a mention on the menu regarding salt usage...and I told my server go for it season that steak as much as you want...although tender and delicious was lacking a little seasoning... Overall still a wonderful experience!
Birthday at Keens
Very typical New York steakhouse with lot of history (the clay pipes hanging on the ceilings belong to famous politicians, actors, etc collected throughout all these years). The decoration is authentic and original. I had one of the best T-Bone steaks in my life. You would never expect entering a piece of American history so close to the Empire State Building and Times Square.

We just left after going to a once a year outing for our anniversary. My husband called in the reservation and they got our name wrong so they couldn't find it when we came. We got a gift certificate from a friend to celebrate our 20 year anniversary and when my husband CALLED in the reservation, he told them that but when we got there, they did nothing special not even a happy anniversary from the host. The girls at the front desk could have cared less and the gentleman who checked us in had the wrong name and didn't apologize. The steak was good, the Cesar salad had way too much dressing. Overall, there are many other steak houses in this city that are way better. This was not special at all and them ignoring my anniversary made it worse. I do not recommend for the money.

So glad I finally got to try this NY institution! The atmosphere and space is pretty cool with all its history and old-school vibes. We shared the Mutton Chop and Prime T-bone Steak along with french fries and creamed spinach, which was more than enough food for the two of us. Everything was on point - the Mutton chop lives up to the hype. Service was friendly and attentive at all times. I really enjoyed the overall experience and would definitely recommend coming at least once!
Keen's has been on my list for a long time.
Beautiful, historic space. The food was solid and so was the service.
Excellent.
This was our first time at Keene's and we can't wait to return. Our waiter was wonderful and the steak- amazing.
I went to Keens because I wanted to try a classic NYC
I went to Keens because I wanted to try a classic NYC Steakhouse, and "classic" sure fits the bill. The decor is an experience in itself. They bring out bread and veggies right away, chewy dinner rolls and crudite on ice. Putting a sprinkling of crushed ice on top of the crudite made it a bit more awkward to serve, but it certainly keeps it cold and fresh, so I took that as a bit of an old-school quirk. And the pickles with that were pretty good, too. Getting to the meat of the matter, we ordered the large filet and the mutton chop to split among our party of three, along with some sides (potatoes, carrots, green beans). They asked if we wanted the meat dishes pre-sliced for sharing, which was nice. The side-dishes were all good, nothing surprising but that's what I want from classic steakhouse sides. The mutton (and the chard served it, along with the homemade mint sauce) was wonderful, a really great lamb dish. The filet was also very tasty, with or without accompanying sauce. The staff were attentive and perfectionist, they offered to replace the filet unprompted when it came out (their words) "overdone". (That is, it was ordered medium rare and came out a hair under medium. Of course they had the right of it, but odds are good we wouldn't have noticed, much less complained, it was great.) We wrapped up the meal with some sorbet. Grapefruit sorbet and mint tea was a wonderful way to conclude such a hearty meal.
After hearing about Keens was a must try it night.
Got there at 4ish and was seated immediately. Had the oysters Rockefeller which were very good. Caesar salad fresh but a bit too much dressing followed by an outstanding porter house which was cooked perfectly medium rare, accompanied by a nice baked potato. Dessert was the crème brûlée delicious. Our waiter Milton was very good and service excellent. Everyone in the restaurant were very friendly. Definitely will return but would probably recommend reservations, we went early but by 6pm pretty full.
Amazing ambiance at this fine New York establishment.
After rewatching a Bourdain clip where he eats at Keen's, I knew I had to dine at this iconic steakhouse. We had to wait about 2-3 weeks for our reservation, but that just speaks to the amount of clientele that also want to dine at this awesome place. We started our dinner with the taste of mutton and it was delicious. 9/10 perfect amount to share for two as our appetizer. Cocktail drinks were delicious, refreshing and mixed to perfection. For dinner we shared the porterhouse for two, hash browns & creamed spinach. Steak was on the dryer side for my taste, but nonetheless it was a scrumptious meal. Sides were just as good along with the steak. Finished our meal with some of the best espresso martini's we've had to date in the city. We asked for our tini's with tequila because that is the best way to enjoy it (iykyk) Finished the night by passing through the swanky little bar area and could definitely see myself grabbing a quick drink in this bar in the future. Great time, would go back and all the pipes lining the ceiling are insane.

I was so excited to take my boyfriend here for his birthday, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the food. The inside is very cool with all the pipes on the ceiling - it definitely feels like an institution. I love the history of the place and all of the stories that have come out of this restaurant! We got the prime porterhouse for two and the hash brown to share. The porterhouse comes out looking very impressive! The meat was very tender, but there was absolutely no flavor to it. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but I would have thought they would add at least a little salt to it while cooking. The hash browns were so good though! They're not like your typical hash browns. It's more like a fried mashed potato patty. Definitely get this as your side! We were so full from our meal that we didn't get dessert, but the server gave us a complimentary cheesecake for my boyfriend's birthday, which was so nice! The cheesecake was so light and fluffy, and I could have eaten multiple slices of this. I'm judging this place by its steak since it is a steakhouse - it's nothing compared to Peter Luger honestly. Everything else was great though!
Arrived earlier before our reservation.
They gave us the option for the dining room To wait or we could be seated in the bar area and we did that. We got a nice corner spot. It was not too loud. Took a little bit time to order, but once we did they were on it and the steaks came Out fast.
3 days in NYC
Second time at Keens. Met relatives enjoyed a fantastic meal with fantastic service. Steaks just melt away, mushrooms to die for and slab bacon so very thick and delicious… can’t wait to return
Mutton chop is a must.
Visited New York and decided to try Keens. We shared a Mutton chop and had the most unbelievable mashed potato with it and spring veg. Not the cheapest place around but the food and the feel of the place make up for it...
I'll "Steak" My Reputation on This One
A remarkable Steakhouse with all the nostalgia of old NYC mixed with a contemporary vibe of high quality food and drink. Superb wait staff that keeps the party going. Best mutton ever! Reserve well in advance. New York, New York!
Fantastic and priced accordingly
The meats are exceptional. Everything is dry aged on site and is fantastic. The sides were amazing and the storied atmosphere can’t be beat. The servers were very attentive. My only criticism would be the price. Yes, it is a top-tier meal, but with tip, four people will spend to $600 without desert or a lot of drinks. Still, I would eat there again in a heartbeat.
Great steak, great atmosphere
Steak was Top Notch. Great food, great atmosphere. The wait staff were excellent, even though they were very busy the evening we were there, they made sure they checked we were ok and did not make us feel rushed in any way. It was out 3rd time in this restaurant and we will be back.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!
Worked flawlessly!
Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
