Cool restaurant, old school style
I had a good experience at Keen’s . The decor is old school steakhouse, which I like. I had the Dover Sole which was very good albeit very expensive. The boiled potatoes that came with it were very bland. The service was prompt but the waiter did not have much of a personality. The wine list by the glass was extremely limited. Glad I went but wouldn’t rush back.

As excellent as I remember it the last time we visited New York ( 2019). If you are a meat lover then this is a must go to restaurant. Old style establishment, excellent service, excellent food ( we had the porthouse for 3) and nice relaxing atmosphere.

Keens Steakhouse opened in 1885 in New York City's Herald Square, what was then the Theater District. It became a favorite hangout for actors from neighboring Garrick Theater. Today, it is the only survivor of the Harold Square entertainment era and has become best known for its USDA prime steaks, its legendary mutton chop once touted by internationally known actress Lily Langtry and the largest collection of churchwarden pipes in the world. Located at 72 West 36th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, in Manhattan's Garment District, Keens Steakhouse seats 350 in several dining rooms with Old English decor, Home of the Pipe Club and full-service bar. Open from 11:45 to 10:30 Monday through Friday, 5 to 10:30 on Saturday and 5 to 9:30 on Sunday, it recalls the tradition of checking one's pipe at the inn which had its origins in 17th century England where travelers kept their clay at their favorite inn because the pipe was too fragile to be carried in a purse or saddlebag. Keens houses more then 50,000 clay smoking pipes, including pipes from such well-known patrons as Theodore Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, John Barrymore, Albert Einstein, Buffalo Bill Cody, Will Rogers, Adlai Stevenson, J.P. Morgan and General Douglas MacArthur. Meanwhile, the restaurant's famous mutton chop is cut from the whole loins of a mature adult sheep that was pastured in Colorado. It contains more fat and muscle, resulting in stronger flavor and tougher texture. I couldn't resist ordering a mutton chop with a baked Idaho potato and sauteed mushrooms. My wife chose authentic Dover Sole with mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and Keens creamed spinach. Oh, I almost forgot. We started with iced shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, lobster bisque and iceberg lettuce wedges with blue cheese dressing, chopped tomatoes and bacon. And we finished by sharing a large slice of key lime pie and a Banana Foster with dark rum and vanilla ice cream. Hard to beat an evening like this.
Be the first to ReplyExceeding Expectations
Keen's far exceeded our expectations. We thought it would be a traditional masculine themed steakhouse. In actual fact it is old world cosy with low ceilings, wood panelled walls and comfy banquettes. We started with a Pimm's No. 1 cup & a rose wine. Our dinner consisted of mashed potatoes, sauteed spinach, a 12 oz filet mignon which we shared & a bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir. Our meal was super simple & simply delicious. Potatoes, veg & meat never tasted so good ! We were served throughout our meal by the charming and helpful Iryna. She made us feel very welcomed.

Great ambiance, very helpful and polite staff, and amazing steak. We went for our honeymoon and they offered us complimentary champaign.

This is a long established steakhouse in Manhattan. The quality of the steaks is superb, we all had fillets , all cooked perfectly rare. This is a higher end restaurant, and the price reflects this .
Be the first to ReplyGood steakhouse
Good ambiance, beautiful place, excellent service and good food. We tried the mutton. It was ok. We had chateaubriand. It was very good.the sauted spinach was good. The best was the lobster bisque. It was a winner. I wish they had ribeye

As you’d expect from this NY mainstay the experience was fantastic. The service and decor traditional yet extravagant. The cocktails were delicious and the steaks were big and juicy enough for the hungriest of diner. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome food with great service. Top notch steakhouse indeed.
Service - awesome. Main server was very knowledgeable and gave appropriate recommendations. Multiple servers of food were all trained. Food - top notch steak. We got the T-Bone Steak (medium). Cooked perfectly with char on the outside. Sides: creamed spinach and french fries on the side. Just add a little bit of salt and pepper to personal likining but food was awesome.

Looks like an old English pub from the outside and, like a TARDIS, opens up on the inside, housing its own pub and cocktail bar, with the restaurant upstairs. Great and incredibly attentive waiting staff - I don't think we ever go to the bottom of a glass of water before it was topped up. My wife had the lamb chops and I had their famous mutton chop. Both outstanding and cooked to perfection. Also, a must with both is their homemade mint jelly. We were both disappointed to find that we were too full to try their desserts. They also offer a decent selection of wine at reasonable (for NY) prices. Probably the best wine we had all holiday.
Be the first to ReplyTourist Trap from Hell
Keens steakhouse gets the award for my personal worst steakhouse in the country. The steak came out super fast, I ordered a well done steak. Bam! 10 minutes after I ordered it our porterhouse for 2 arrived cooked through and through, super dry and luke warm. The steak was obviously pre cooked. No flavor, super bland like card board. They are trying to rush you out asap, and with the bum rush service, and crap steak it shows. The table next to us, a guy sat down waiting for the rest of his party after roughly 5 minutes someone came over to him and explained he needed to start ordering or leave. He ordered appetizers, and sure enough, a couple more minutes, his family joined him. They have no patience or interest in providing you with a high-quality meal or experience. It's all about pumping customers in and out fast. I read lots of reviews and watched YouTube videos about Keens, I thought we were really in for a great experience. The joke was on us. This place is a tourist trap. If you truly think this is a good steakhouse, God bless you. If you want a good steak that is way better than Keens, may I suggest Outback, Longhorn, seriously. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. One and done. Insulting. Do they care about this review? Not in the slightest, business is good with an endless supply of tourists to provide a piss poor experience to.

Very typical New York steakhouse with lot of history (the clay pipes hanging on the ceilings belong to famous politicians, actors, etc collected throughout all these years). The decoration is authentic and original. I had one of the best T-Bone steaks in my life. You would never expect entering a piece of American history so close to the Empire State Building and Times Square.

Second time at Keens. Met relatives enjoyed a fantastic meal with fantastic service. Steaks just melt away, mushrooms to die for and slab bacon so very thick and delicious… can’t wait to return
Be the first to ReplyMutton chop is a must.
Visited New York and decided to try Keens. We shared a Mutton chop and had the most unbelievable mashed potato with it and spring veg. Not the cheapest place around but the food and the feel of the place make up for it...
Be the first to ReplyI'll "Steak" My Reputation on This One
A remarkable Steakhouse with all the nostalgia of old NYC mixed with a contemporary vibe of high quality food and drink. Superb wait staff that keeps the party going. Best mutton ever! Reserve well in advance. New York, New York!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic and priced accordingly
The meats are exceptional. Everything is dry aged on site and is fantastic. The sides were amazing and the storied atmosphere can’t be beat. The servers were very attentive. My only criticism would be the price. Yes, it is a top-tier meal, but with tip, four people will spend to $600 without desert or a lot of drinks. Still, I would eat there again in a heartbeat.
Be the first to ReplyGreat steak, great atmosphere
Steak was Top Notch. Great food, great atmosphere. The wait staff were excellent, even though they were very busy the evening we were there, they made sure they checked we were ok and did not make us feel rushed in any way. It was out 3rd time in this restaurant and we will be back.
Be the first to ReplyMutton Chop even better than advertised!
After seeing the videos of their famous Mutton Chop I popped into their Bar area, enjoyed a couple Pilsners David suggested, and looked forward to my entree. The Mutton Chop was simply outstanding - just loved it and enjoyed most of it without their house made mint jelly which I find overtakes the wonderful taste of the lamb. The lemony Escarole was just superb along side the Mutton, so good that I ordered an extra portion of it ($5.25). I like Bourbon and asked David for a suggestion and he brought an excellent Jefferson Ocean Bourbon ( aged on ships) which was a perfect ending to a memorable meal. No question I will be visiting Keens for the Mutton on my next visit to NYC! As an added bonus the 34 St - Herald Square subway stop is very close to Keens.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best steak houses in New York City.
Very nice ambience, decor, service but most importantly the food was excellent. The crust on the porterhouse for two was hands down the best ever, the steak was soft and succulent, their New York cheesecake was also delicious. It was a pricy meal costing around $300 for two; but if you have the budget definitely would go.
Be the first to ReplyGreat choice
It seems redundant to add another five star review to all the others. Just to say, I've tried other well known steakhouses in and around NYC, and the steaks here are among the best. I was halfway expecting a tourist experience rather than a great steak. There was no such compromise, everything we had was top notch. Bacon as an appetizer has become almost a gimmick, but here it was excellent. Excellent.
Be the first to ReplyNice restaurant and bar
The staff is amazing, both, the bar and the restaurant. The food was tasty. We had ribeye, big plate and perfectly cooked.
Be the first to ReplyFamous steakhouse
I recommend booking in advance as this restaurant is extremely popular. We shared a porterhouse steak, two side dishes and a bottle of wine. The service is brilliant, non intrusive and very attentive. Very expensive but in my option worth it for a great experience in an historic setting.
Be the first to ReplyA steak to remember
I took my daughter to what became a mouth watering dinner, we shared a T-Bone steam which couldn’t be made better, nice and crispy from the outside and beautifully medium rare from the inside Our waiter was also amazing, friendly, attentive, funny and a joy to get a service from It’s been a while since I could find a single fault in a restaurant I’ve eaten at
Be the first to ReplyEasy to see why this place is legendary
Keen's was a perfect place for a cold February night, and easily the highlight of any NYC trip. The interior is so cozy, and breaming with a rich history. The porterhouse was everything we hoped, and easily the best steak we ever had. Service was just as incredible as the food. My only regret was we didn't save any room for desert - it looked amazing!
Be the first to ReplyAwesome Porterhouse for 2! Lives up to NYC expectations.
1st time at Keen’s coming in from NJ on a cold NYC night and it lived up to our expectations! Awesome Porterhouse for Two, excellent service and great old world ambiance. Hope to be back soon.
