Quite good
I have been to the original Kimukatsu in Tokyo many times. The branch in Los Angeles did not disappoint. Everything was great
Be the first to ReplyReally good katsu in Sawtelle
A restaurant's got to be pretty good to survive in little Japan in Sawtelle, sandwiched between ramen houses, curry shops and BBQ and the dizzying collection of high quality eateries. The specialty is the katsu, and there is a variety to select from: 25 layer thinly sliced tonkatsu, served with different sauces (I picked the shiso set), chicken katsu and beef. Frankly i love all the side dishes - the Japanese vegetable rice that came with the set was delicious, the miso soup was good quality and they even manage to make the ordinary cabbage taste good with the dressing. Service was fantastic - staff was helpful and friendly. Highly recommended. The desserts look good but i was too stuffed to try, plus there are so many dessert options in the area.
Be the first to ReplyIn Japantown, on Sawtelle at Olympic. Fabulous Japanese dinners. Modest prices and the most exceptional food.
Whenever I visit this part of LA I have lunch and dinner here. My daughter introduced me to pure Japanese cuisine and this modest restaurant is casual dining at its the best. And ... Prices are reasonable. Thank you, Kimukatsu! I recommend without reservation.
Be the first to ReplyPork Cutlet with a Twist
This restaurant has a unique specialty: pork cutlet deep fried in panko crust, thinly sliced and layered into a thick stack. Good hot hoji tea.
Be the first to ReplyBasic Japanese food done right
Unassuming Japanese restaurant next to many other good unassuming Japanese restaurants in Sawtelle's little Japan. They specialize in tonkatsu and theirs is made by laying 25 very thinly sliced pork cutlets, rolled up, panko'd, and fried. Frankly, it was delicious but I didn't think it was all that much different than regular tonkatsu. The cabbage and salad dressing they serve at every table is simply delicious. The tonkatsu curry was good but not as good as Hurry Curry's next door. The veggie ramen is awesome and the agedashi is simply scrumptious.

The restaurant specialize pork cutlet deep friend in panko crust. The style is using layered thinly sliced pork stack together thick and breaded with a good amount of coating and fried golden brown. A variety of flavors are offered and the ume shiso was the one I choose to try, the tangy sauce worked perfect with the juicy pork. There are the usual tokatsu sauce available in a ceramic pot you could pour yourself if you want a change of flavor. The side dishes are good, Udon and ramen are handmade with excellent texture. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyInteresting and quality twist on traditional tonkatsu. Attentive service.
Kimukatsu serves a special kind of tonkatsu (Japanese fried pork cutlet). 25 x 1mm slices of pork are crumbed and fried in the shape of a traditional katsu. Tasty enough. Interesting concept and worth trying. To be honest I would still prefer a traditional โhire,โ or โrosuโ cut, particularly if expertly executed. Nonetheless, full marks to Kimukatsu for ingenuity. Full marks for presentation, service and restaurant ambience. Unlimited fine cut cabbage salad, pickles, rice and miso soup are a nice touch.
