Kinship Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Kinship was a wonderful experience from beginning to end.
I did not have a reservation and called ahead. Michelle was very accommodating and was able to find me a table. Donald was my server and was able to explain everything on the menu as well as give recommendations. All of the wait staff were polite, attentive, and friendly. I had the lamb belly appetizer and it was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. Very balanced with so many flavors that blend well together. The duck entree was also fantastic and very flavorful. This is one of my best dining experiences and I can't wait to come back.
Our visit to Kinship was exceptional.
Service, food, and ambiance were all 10/10. We couldn't have asked for more.
Love this restaurant
We were told our table was in the basement and were very apprehensive. Ended up, it was the best table in the house for us. It was just outside the kitchen with a view of the kitchen through a window (dinner and a show!). We started with the lobster french toast. It was so good, really wanted to order a second one. We had the sturgeon with mixed veggies. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was incredible. Can't wait to return.
Food: Squid and Rockfish was very flavourful.
The halibut was way too salty. Overseasoned. Service: I didn't understand the hierarchy of the menu, and it was not explained. I ordered 3 heavy food, without knowing. It feels like one of the server wasn't proficient in English. When he describes the dish, he used simple words and tried to have me understand. For example, he kept saying, "Okay?"
Kinship is an intimate higher end restaurant in DC.
I visited for the first time with a friend for dinner on a Friday evening. We started with the rolls which came out fresh and delicious. The scallops and lamp chops were delicious! I didn't really enjoy the soup. The service was excellent. Defiantly try if you're in the area.
Absolutely amazing meal.
The food was incredible. The server was the kindest, most attentive, most informed server I've ever had - his presence made the meal all the better. I wish I'd gotten his name as I'd have mentioned him here. Everything we ate was so delicious and my husband's food sensitivities (gluten and dairy) were easily accommodated. Loved this place and will go back when I'm in DC!
Wonderful meal
Almost missed the entrance as it was fairly non descript. Was invited to wait at the bar or lounge decorated like a cozy living room while the party arrived. The dining area was welcoming and the booth we were seated in exuded farm house vibes. The menu was laid out in an unconventional manner which the server helpfully explained. Our water was constantly topped up and utensils replaced every course. Every dish ordered was great and the surprise was the toffee accompanying the order of hot tea. Its one star is well deserved.

We made a reservation on Kinship's website which also required a deposit that is applied to your final bill. The food and service was excellent. The servers were very attentive to our needs. My only complaint would be that I could hear all the conversations around me. It was especially distracting when some of the tables around us were extra loud. We got the catalan spiced confit squid, St. Martin cocoa rubbed duck breast, braised lamb crepinete, kinship opera cake, and they brought a surprise extra dessert for our celebration. The food was really well balanced. Our favorite dish was the squid. It was so smooth and it just melted in your mouth. Price wise, this was as expected since this is a Michelin restaurant, but we had an excellent dining experience. The atmosphere though could use some work.
Terrible service.
I had to wait until AFTER my meal was done for the absent waiter to finally come by to take my wine order. My water glass sat empty until the end of my meal too. Clearly, with their mandatory 23% "tip" included, the wait staff make absolutely no effort to make you feel welcome and looked after. We won't be back.
I visited Kinship again this week after many years away.
The mushroom torchon is still on the menu, and I still enjoyed it, but the overall experience was disappointing because it did not live up to the prices or Michelin star status. We visited on a Friday in the early evening and were some of the first guests in the dining room, but it filled up by the time we left. We sat at a very nice enclosed booth. It was enclosed on three sides, floor to ceiling, and I really appreciated the coziness. The dining room is also not very crowded, with a nice amount of space between tables, which makes it feel like a premium experience. We got a round of cocktails, a bottle of wine, four smaller dishes, and the roast chicken, all to share among our table of four. Service was good but not great. The main waiter insisted on removing the drink and wine menus when we preferred to keep them. The waiters delivering dishes gave brief explanations, but were hard to understand through their accents. The sommelier did a very good job. The smaller dishes were pretty good. They were attractively plated and tasty. We had the mushroom torchon, lamb rollatini, confit squid, and sea scallops, and each of us had our favorites. I particularly liked the rollatini and torchon the best, although the rollatini was not very warm (maybe intentional?). I don't personally care for scallops, but they were still well cooked and my companions enjoyed them. I was a little disappointed in the squid; I liked the tempura tentacles more than the confit pieces, which looked and tasted like pretty standard calamari rings (not fried, though). One of my pet peeves is restaurants that cling to the old school notion of plating in threes, despite most people dining in groups of 2 or 4. All the small plates were a bit annoying to share. The torchon came with 2 pieces of bread, the squid had two fried tentacles, and the rollatini and scallops both came with three pieces. I know customizing dishes to the table size would be a hassle, but it would make for a more premium experience. My main disappointment was with the roast chicken. I don't usually order roast chicken at restaurants because I consider it a pretty boring dish, but I've also heard that it can be a really excellent, satisfying dish that really shows off the restaurant. We decided to go for it. It came with fried potato wedges, a salad, and parker house rolls. It was just a really boring, bland dish. Everything had just a little bit of seasoning, but not enough. By the end, I was desperate for some dipping sauce. I've made better chicken at home. Shame on us for ordering it. The cocktails and wine were good. We skipped dessert because we were plenty full. I expected the bill to come with small petit fours or mignardises, but nope. I'm also disappointed that Kinship has a 23% service charge when the service was only adequate and 20% is the norm. I do not consider anything over 20% appropriate. Overall, a few good dishes, but not good enough.
My experience at Kinship didn't live up to the anticipation.
We experienced a significant delay in service from the start, with our server juggling bartender duties as well. Coupled with a hefty 23% service charge, my expectations for exceptional service were high, yet the reality was underwhelming, especially when our meals were served cold. This discrepancy between the price and the service quality left room for improvement. I hope Kinship addresses these issues to ensure the service and food warmth align with its premium charges. The only notable positive about the experience was the company, and the atmosphere was pretty cozy.
Impeccable food & service
All of our dishes were perfectly designed and prepared, and our service was fantastic. A marvelous experience, well deserving of its Michelin star. Will return on our next visit to DC!
My only severe complaint about Kinship is the acoustics.
I think it is unfair to dock them a star for it, but as someone who is sensitive to auditory stimuli, I found it very unsettling. It felt like you could hear everyone else's conversations. But on to the food! Everything we had was fantastic with a few "OK" dishes. My husband and I had the mushroom torchon, the lobster french toast, the black bass, and the cocoa rubbed duck breast. Our favorite thing was the black bass (the broth was incredible). The mushroom torchon was delicious, but probably not our favorite thing ever. The duck was good, but slightly overcooked. We like it much more medium rare and have had more tender duck in DC. The dessert and cocktails were very good with a couple of misses. My husband had two bourbon based cocktails (can't remember the names) which were very underwhelming. The cocktails were not balanced and all you could taste was the bourbon. I had the Aviation and the Last Word. Very similar cocktails and both very good. I would visit Kinship if you are looking for a delicious meal, but maybe try to reserve a booth and definitely try the bass!
Pretty close to perfect.
Had dinner on Saturday night and we loved everything, from the lobster French toast to the mahi mahi. This is a very well run restaurant, service was perfectly timed and the sommelier was a joy. The apple pie, with a wink at McDonald's was a perfect ending. Michelin star deserved.

Food was so good! Had the black bass and the mushrooms, with banana crepe for dessert. But can't recommend the service. Slow, inattentive, our waiter wasn't interested in describing the menu at all, and he got one of our dishes wrong. That's just annoying when they are putting a mandatory 23% tip.. but providing 15% level service

Was in DC for a work trip and a coworker reserved this experience for us 4. Everything was amazing. Service, Food, atmosphere. You really can't go wrong ordering anything off the menu. All 4 of my coworkers gave it 5 stars. Kinship is also Michelin rated. Def worth it. I can't wait to travel back to DC with my husband so he can try it out.
What a disappointment.
Food was good, but service was terrible. The artichoke soup and the duck were delicious. The server didn't provide the best guidance when ordering, never placed an order for a shared appetizer, made inappropriate (racist?) comments, gestured one the guests to pass him an empty plate, set the table for a course we had the finished 5 minutes before.......Unfortunatelly, the service only slightly improved after the manager took over. Desserts were good, but dissappointing that the espresso a guest ordered, was serviced cold and in a coffee-stained cup. Not the service and experience one expects from a Michelin Star restaurant and when the bill is topped with 23% gratuity.
Fallen Star: Poor Service Leaves Bad Taste in spite of Good Food. Very Memorable for all the wrong reasons.
The food was terrific. The service was poor for a regular restaurant, but shockingly bad for a Michelin star. Our waiter poorly explained the menu, the portions and how best to order. He failed to place the order for an entire course that we then chose to skip, and made inappropriate/disparaging comments about “white people with dreadlocks” who live in Oregon/Willamette Valley where he would "never live" when serving our Pinot Noir. He pointed and gestured at dinner guests to hand plates to him to clear without so much as a please or thank you, and failed to check on us throughout the courses. We had to flag him down for a second round of drinks, and he did not clean the table between courses after he spilled and splattered when clumsily removing a prior course. He set the table for a course he had already served and just cleared; when we asked why we had different utensils for the shared table dish, he said, "I’m not paying attention” and asked us what we ordered and what our next course was. Unfortunately, service only improved to adequate after two complaints and the manager stepping into serve the table. He shared that the “printer had been broken for a week” when explaining desert substitutions, and then served espresso cold. Michelin star? Seriously? And not once in the entire four courses did anyone ask us how is the food or seem to care. For the record, the food is great. The service ruins the experience and is topped off with a 23% gratuity.
After many years of not returning to Kinship (because we
After many years of not returning to Kinship (because we couldn't find a reservation), we squeezed in on Superbowl Sunday : - ). I write this for both the good and bad reasons why this meal may not be representative of the typical experience, because the restaurant was calm and very well staffed. For the food, all were well prepared and presented. We shared everything. To get the negative out of the way, the mahi-mahi was our least favorite. Not bad, but not too interesting. I purposefully selected it because of the flavors identified on the menu, but for us, the described flavors did not transfer to our mouths. Our favorites, on this visit, were the rock shrimp salad, duck, and quail. The rock shrimp salad invited a nice balance of texture. Also, the pickled vegetables and chilli peppers were proportioned fantastically to enhance the shrimp. We could have easily eaten another rock shrimp salad and when I got home actually wondered why we didn't ; - ). Also, because of our lactose allergy the kitchen suggested some reshuffling of our original main course selections, so we had 1 duck and 1 quail for the main course. This would not have been my first choice (to order two birds), but it worked well (and interestingly) because of the way they were both prepared, they were fantastic complements. The duck was not too sweet which is often a danger with duck courses, but once again, the balance with the savoriness and fat of the duck was in perfect harmony with the cocoa and cherry. For the quail, the grapefruit and cilantro really brought out the flavor of what is, often, a not interesting fowl. Just like at Métier, Kinship's menu shines when balancing textures and flavors. I think this is my favorite part of both restaurants. For this price, service was where it needed to be. Prompt and friendly. Wine arrived before each course. Also, our server and sommelier used some real thought in pairing our selected courses with the wine. Tableware changed on cue, and water and bread were always refreshed as needed without being too intrusive. My one nit is that if we can't have a tasting menu (like at Métier), we like a server who will take the reins and make the menu for us. This did not happen even though he tried to helpful, and much of this is personality driven, so it may be us finding the right server who likes to share what she or he believes are the best courses. For the price, after reincluding the $50 deposit when making the reservation, the total price including the automatic service charge/ tip of 23% was $291. We had 5 glasses of wine, two main courses, two starters, two desserts, and one coffee. At first, I thought we had a really good value for the price and food. When we left, we felt satisfied. However, we both felt a little hungry within an hour. Therefore, to be fair, we probably should have had one more course to feel satisfied, so the price should have been around $350. However, this is still a pretty good value for what you get and worth another visit (assuming we can secure another reservation before the next Superbowl : - P ).
Kinship is a solid four.
The winter menu of 2023 was inventive but didn't have dishes that excited me. We kept it simple, ordering cocktails, salad as an appetizer and surf and turf as our mains. Execution and seasoning of the steak and lobster was perfect. Ambiance was lacking - felt very sterile and not inviting, but service made up for that kind of atmosphere.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
