Fallen Star: Poor Service Leaves Bad Taste in spite of Good Food. Very Memorable for all the wrong reasons.
The food was terrific. The service was poor for a regular restaurant, but shockingly bad for a Michelin star. Our waiter poorly explained the menu, the portions and how best to order. He failed to place the order for an entire course that we then chose to skip, and made inappropriate/disparaging comments about “white people with dreadlocks” who live in Oregon/Willamette Valley where he would "never live" when serving our Pinot Noir. He pointed and gestured at dinner guests to hand plates to him to clear without so much as a please or thank you, and failed to check on us throughout the courses. We had to flag him down for a second round of drinks, and he did not clean the table between courses after he spilled and splattered when clumsily removing a prior course. He set the table for a course he had already served and just cleared; when we asked why we had different utensils for the shared table dish, he said, "I’m not paying attention” and asked us what we ordered and what our next course was. Unfortunately, service only improved to adequate after two complaints and the manager stepping into serve the table. He shared that the “printer had been broken for a week” when explaining desert substitutions, and then served espresso cold. Michelin star? Seriously? And not once in the entire four courses did anyone ask us how is the food or seem to care. For the record, the food is great. The service ruins the experience and is topped off with a 23% gratuity.

Amazing food & great atmosphere! The staff went above and beyond to make sure every guest was happy.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food excellent service. Great wine list
Outstanding food and service. Restaurant very accommodating of dietary restrictions (vegetarian/ vegan) even with the set menu. Family dinner, party of 8. We loved it so much we came back with a party of 8 two weeks later. Amazing experience. Flavors and textures extraordinary. We had a la carte the first time and the set menu the second visit two weeks later.

My husband and I went here for my birthday dinner. This restaurant has a small menu with a few options to choose from. They recommend you try an appetizer, entree and dessert from the menu -- if you choose any more, it may be too much food. We did as the waiter suggested and walked away full, but not overly stuffed. We shared the lobster toast appetizer -- I saw a lot of recommendations for it and it was good, but not as good as I expected. For my entree, I had the scallops -- maybe I did not read the menu properly or what, but I was not expecting the sauce to be as spicy as it was. Given the unexpected spice, I was not the biggest fan of my entree. My husband had the sea trout and enjoyed it. My dessert, the chocolate chip cake, was the best part of my meal. My husband had the phyllo pudding which he enjoyed. The restaurant had a nice ambience. The bathrooms were clean and had lit candles making it smell nice. Service was excellent. I was underwhelmed for the price we had to pay.

Seated in the basement due to special event with secret service in main dining room (nobody told us in advance). Had to summon the tall, burly foreign waiter every time we needed something; he never pro actively came to us. Every course took 5 minutes too long to serve. Caviar dip was a joke with greasy tiny chips. Scallop dish was bland. Veal entree was best dish and fish was good. Dessert was terrible. Chocolate cookie cake was kindergarten level - stale muffin with crumb debris and sauce splashed across plate. Brought wrong other dessert and didn’t apologize. Then apple pie was a glorified pop tart, nothing special. Waiter was clearly in over his head, flustered, unfriendly and had to pull teeth to get anything from him. 23% service charge is Highway robbery. Avoid

Traveled to DC for a weekend restaurant tours. My wife and I were initially very excited about trying this Michelin star restaurant; however that was short lived. Reservations were made a month in advance and confirmed a week prior. We were guaranteed a nice table in the dining room. My wife is extremely gluten intolerant and asked numerous questions regarding this prior to confirming our reservation. The manager on the phone stated not a problem and our menu would be marked gf and ensured no cross contamination. When we arrived we were seated at the bar (first red flag). Our waiter was a bartender who only came to our table twice- once with a cocktail second to take our order. When placing our order the waiter/bartender clearly has no idea what was gluten free and ignored us when we requested assistance with the menu. We made the best guess as we could and went from there. We asked to keep a menu to order a variety of dishes to share in which the waiter proceeded to take our menus anyway. That was the last time we saw him. Other staff brought food to our table. We attempted to get someone’s attention numerous time for wine service with no avail. The food was good but had to request another staff for a desert that again no questions were answered. Summary food was good but not at the level of a Michelin star- service was extremely sub par after we even tried to get a server’s attention. I guess good news is we had anticipated spending twice what we did; however with no service that didn’t occur.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, horrible service
The food here was delicious. We had the crab, chutoro, quail, halibut, and lobster French toast. Unfortunately the service from our main server was awful. The host was great. After drinks, we had to ask someone else to take our order. Mid service improved. But after mains were cleared, nothing. We waited over 30 minutes and finally asked for our check. 50 minutes after our mains we cleared we left without dessert. The 23% mandatory service charge was definitely not earned. Unfortunately great food isn’t always enough to make up for poor service.

Absolutely outstanding. Dinner at kinship is a sophisticated and elegant experience. The seven course tasting menu (we had the pescatarian version) is wonderful, with dishes such as white sturgeon (our favorite), halibut, two-tier scallop (very creative!) with Uni, grilled tuna (classic, with various mushrooms) and two desserts. Service is professional, efficient yet personal and the setting is classic (white table cloth) and spacious.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing anniversary dinner
We went to Kinship to celebrate our 4 year anniversary. It is a beautiful and serene setting for dinner. The staff were all very kind, helpful, and attentive. Most importantly, the food was so delicious. We had the avocado carpaccio, pork belly, lobster French toast, ricotta agnolotti and scallops. The lobster French toast was other worldly, and I almost shed a tear when I finished it. The desserts were also standouts! We had the chocolate and coconut, and a banana dessert which were both the perfect end to what was a truly memorable anniversary dinner. We even were able to talk to the chef afterwards, and he shared with us stories behind some of our favorite dishes. A 10/10 meal. We cannot wait to go back!

Fabulous evening. Food and service were pretty perfect. We were a party of 3 couples and the pace of the evening couldn’t have been better. We never felt rushed or that we were waiting too long between courses.
Be the first to ReplyTasty food, appealing atmosphere
My husband and I greatly enjoyed our dinner at Kinship. The space is appealing, service is excellent and the food was delicious. We shared the Veal T-Bone and a couple of appetizers, and didn’t have room for dessert. The veal could have been a touch more tender, but it was flavorful, as were the accompaniments.
Be the first to ReplySkip dessert
The appetizer and main course were both excellent. The lobster was delicious and the salmon perfectly cooked. Dessert, on the other hand was horrible: greasy, too sweet and just not edible. No idea what the chef was thinking... Prices on the high side. Not worth a repeat.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous and great value for money
Delighted with our experience at this fabulous restaurant. The service was impeccable and at our pace. The quality of the food exceptional and the chef’s creativity very evident. We chose 5 dishes and shared them and shared an outstanding desert and a couple of glasses of wonderful wine. I was very pleased with the price and thought it was excellent value for money. Top notch!

We had a wonderful time at Kinship. The food and service was excellent. They took very good care of us from the moment we arrived until we finished up for the evening. We did not feel rushed at all and the staff we very attentive to our needs. Every course was well prepared and we enjoyed each one. The chef did an excellent job!

I had extremely high expectations for this restaurant. However, the wait for my food was horrendous. It should thusly come as suprise that the food was freezing cold and poorly seasoned.
Be the first to ReplyA sophisticated and rustic experience for a special occasion
For Valentines Day, I choose to select Kinship this year and it certainly held up its reputation. The service was outstanding. I had arranged to have flowers waiting for my wife, figuring they would have placed them in a vase. Instead, they were neatly placed in a bouquet on the table so we could still see each others faces. I also had an opportunity to meet the world-class chef, in his kitchen, at the end of our dinner. The decor is that of modern rustic, with a hint of sophistication with whites and grey. This allows the food to stand out on the plates. We shared a few small dishes as well as the sharable roasted chicken. The desert was also amazing. The menu is organized in a unique experience driven way, adding to the elegance. We highly recommend Kinship for your next special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyWe loved it
The dining area is a little drab. The staff work very well together which added value to our dining experience at Kinship. It's the food that puts this place at 5 stars. Our conversation kept getting interrupted with one of us saying "This is so good" Make sure to research this place before you go to be aware what it's about. It's different than most places but it's a place that we thoroughly enjoyed.
Be the first to ReplyBest Kept Secret
As a serious foodie, this is my favorite place in the US to walk in without a reservation, sit at the bar and eat amazing food. I recently went to a few other Michelin one star places in DC, and Kinship remains my favorite.... without reservations!! I'm hesitating to give away my secret, but consider it a gift.
Be the first to ReplyGood food
The food was very good, the service was exceptional. There were a couple things we were disappointed about at this level of restaurant; The people who delivered our food spoke so softly we have no idea what they said, even after having them repeat it. Our server, the manager, and the beverage coordinator were all very well spoken. on a hot 90° day we were served lukewarm tap-water. They ask you which type of water you would prefer, but I would just assume it would come with ice in it. After asking, they brought us out a separate glass ice with a spoon that we had to scoop into a water glasses all night long. They kept refilling the glass of ice but it was rather inconvenient. Since this is a Michelin starred restaurant, we were expecting the usual pomp and circumstance, which did not come at this restaurant. There were no chefs gifts, palate cleansers, or any midcourse surprises. When we went to the restroom no one folded our tablecloth. Obviously these are first world problems, but we were expecting a little bit more.
Be the first to ReplyTop Notch Dining Experience
We went to Kinship for the first time last night and it was fantastic. Any review has to start with the food - we had 6 different dishes and all were excellent. The Halibut in a curry sauce was a particular standout. The wine list is huge and reasonably priced and Chase the sommelier was extremely helpful in navigating the list. Our server Matt was friendly and knowledgeable and coursed out our food perfectly. Finally, the room is quite elegant with well spaced tables, great lighting and good noise levels. We will definitely be going back.

We ordered the lamb for 2 and it was amazing. The apps we had were great as well. Over all great experience. Service was impeccable.

Very elegant interior. The menu is great - there’s a lot to chose from. We had a delicious meal featuring tuna, sea urchin and sturgeon! The wine was also delicious. A stunning meal.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a special take out
We had a special take out meal during the Coronavirus panic. At the time of this review they were offering specials a couple of days a week. We had lasagna with breadsticks and salad. Have to say the lasagna was some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Layers and layers of gooey cheese and delicious meat sauce with tomatoes. The bread was garlicy and cheesy. Wasn’t too impressed with the salad which was a lot of mostly ribs romaine. Can’t wait to dine in!
Be the first to ReplySuperlative food and confident service
We had a wonderful evening at Kinship. From the moment you enter, you are taken care of immaculately, from the efficient cloakroom service to the attentive and knowledgable personal waiter, you are in excellent hands. The food is interesting and innovative, but satisfying and filling in ways that some restaurants at this level are not. You can be certain that the ratio of ingredients is perfectly calculated to deliver consistent taste in each mouthful, and flavoured with obvious loving care to bring out the best in it.
There is a comprehensive wine list to go with an equally splendid cocktail menu, and a range of digestifs that include Calvados finishes the meal perfectly.
The rooms themselves are light and warm with beautiful fresh flower arrangements to add to the feel of being somewhere special.
A quietly sophisticated location for a thoroughly civilised evening.
Fine Dining in an Intimate Atmosphere
A fantastic atmosphere with a comfortable yet diverse menu and accoutrements.
We had a big enough group to pretty much run the whole menu. Drinks were crisp with good flavor and smoky undertones from the bourbons and whiskeys.
Most of the menu is small plates but even the mains at the bottom of each menu column are meant to be shared.
The seafoods were well prepared, fillets were flakey and flavorful but not oily or heavy. The French toast lobster had a good juxtaposition of sweet and savory flavors. And the beef dishes were fork tender and flavorful.
Even the roast chicken which could have have the makings of being mundane was beyond expectation.
Service is exactly what would be expected of a Michelin rated restaurant, attentive and personal without being intrusive.
If you you are lucky enough to have the opportunity for such fine dining, Kinship provides an apt experience.
