My only severe complaint about Kinship is the acoustics.
I think it is unfair to dock them a star for it, but as someone who is sensitive to auditory stimuli, I found it very unsettling. It felt like you could hear everyone else's conversations. But on to the food! Everything we had was fantastic with a few "OK" dishes. My husband and I had the mushroom torchon, the lobster french toast, the black bass, and the cocoa rubbed duck breast. Our favorite thing was the black bass (the broth was incredible). The mushroom torchon was delicious, but probably not our favorite thing ever. The duck was good, but slightly overcooked. We like it much more medium rare and have had more tender duck in DC. The dessert and cocktails were very good with a couple of misses. My husband had two bourbon based cocktails (can't remember the names) which were very underwhelming. The cocktails were not balanced and all you could taste was the bourbon. I had the Aviation and the Last Word. Very similar cocktails and both very good. I would visit Kinship if you are looking for a delicious meal, but maybe try to reserve a booth and definitely try the bass!
Be the first to ReplyPretty close to perfect.
Had dinner on Saturday night and we loved everything, from the lobster French toast to the mahi mahi. This is a very well run restaurant, service was perfectly timed and the sommelier was a joy. The apple pie, with a wink at McDonald's was a perfect ending. Michelin star deserved.

Food was so good! Had the black bass and the mushrooms, with banana crepe for dessert. But can't recommend the service. Slow, inattentive, our waiter wasn't interested in describing the menu at all, and he got one of our dishes wrong. That's just annoying when they are putting a mandatory 23% tip.. but providing 15% level service

Was in DC for a work trip and a coworker reserved this experience for us 4. Everything was amazing. Service, Food, atmosphere. You really can't go wrong ordering anything off the menu. All 4 of my coworkers gave it 5 stars. Kinship is also Michelin rated. Def worth it. I can't wait to travel back to DC with my husband so he can try it out.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a disappointment.
Food was good, but service was terrible. The artichoke soup and the duck were delicious. The server didn't provide the best guidance when ordering, never placed an order for a shared appetizer, made inappropriate (racist?) comments, gestured one the guests to pass him an empty plate, set the table for a course we had the finished 5 minutes before.......Unfortunatelly, the service only slightly improved after the manager took over. Desserts were good, but dissappointing that the espresso a guest ordered, was serviced cold and in a coffee-stained cup. Not the service and experience one expects from a Michelin Star restaurant and when the bill is topped with 23% gratuity.

After many years of not returning to Kinship (because we couldn't find a reservation), we squeezed in on Superbowl Sunday : - ). I write this for both the good and bad reasons why this meal may not be representative of the typical experience, because the restaurant was calm and very well staffed. For the food, all were well prepared and presented. We shared everything. To get the negative out of the way, the mahi-mahi was our least favorite. Not bad, but not too interesting. I purposefully selected it because of the flavors identified on the menu, but for us, the described flavors did not transfer to our mouths. Our favorites, on this visit, were the rock shrimp salad, duck, and quail. The rock shrimp salad invited a nice balance of texture. Also, the pickled vegetables and chilli peppers were proportioned fantastically to enhance the shrimp. We could have easily eaten another rock shrimp salad and when I got home actually wondered why we didn't ; - ). Also, because of our lactose allergy the kitchen suggested some reshuffling of our original main course selections, so we had 1 duck and 1 quail for the main course. This would not have been my first choice (to order two birds), but it worked well (and interestingly) because of the way they were both prepared, they were fantastic complements. The duck was not too sweet which is often a danger with duck courses, but once again, the balance with the savoriness and fat of the duck was in perfect harmony with the cocoa and cherry. For the quail, the grapefruit and cilantro really brought out the flavor of what is, often, a not interesting fowl. Just like at Métier, Kinship's menu shines when balancing textures and flavors. I think this is my favorite part of both restaurants. For this price, service was where it needed to be. Prompt and friendly. Wine arrived before each course. Also, our server and sommelier used some real thought in pairing our selected courses with the wine. Tableware changed on cue, and water and bread were always refreshed as needed without being too intrusive. My one nit is that if we can't have a tasting menu (like at Métier), we like a server who will take the reins and make the menu for us. This did not happen even though he tried to helpful, and much of this is personality driven, so it may be us finding the right server who likes to share what she or he believes are the best courses. For the price, after reincluding the $50 deposit when making the reservation, the total price including the automatic service charge/ tip of 23% was $291. We had 5 glasses of wine, two main courses, two starters, two desserts, and one coffee. At first, I thought we had a really good value for the price and food. When we left, we felt satisfied. However, we both felt a little hungry within an hour. Therefore, to be fair, we probably should have had one more course to feel satisfied, so the price should have been around $350. However, this is still a pretty good value for what you get and worth another visit (assuming we can secure another reservation before the next Superbowl : - P ).
Be the first to ReplyKinship is a solid four.
The winter menu of 2023 was inventive but didn't have dishes that excited me. We kept it simple, ordering cocktails, salad as an appetizer and surf and turf as our mains. Execution and seasoning of the steak and lobster was perfect. Ambiance was lacking - felt very sterile and not inviting, but service made up for that kind of atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyWe could not have been more excited about this restaurant.
Menu and reviews looked incredible. And the food delivered in a big way. The duck/bass/quail/crab cakes could not have been better. But ambience and especially service were very underwhelming. As you walk through the door, you enter what appears to be a sad NYE party where you are the first guest. The bright lights, walls, furniture and odd music created a very clinical ambience. But it was the service that was especially disappointing. The waiter could not have been more disinterested and made us feel incredibly unwelcome. We would have rather ordered from an iPad, then deal with this guy. We addressed with the manager and he said that they aim for a comfy environment, which was the complete opposite of the reality. Truly a forgettable experience despite good food.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding food and service.
Restaurant very accommodating of dietary restrictions (vegetarian/ vegan) even with the set menu. Family dinner, party of 8. We loved it so much we came back with a party of 8 two weeks later. Amazing experience. Flavors and textures extraordinary. We had a la carte the first time and the set menu the second visit two weeks later. Phenomenal wagu and scallops.

Upon entering the restaurant, there was a welcoming and cozy waiting room. Once seated, we were presented with beautiful, pristine menus. The cocktails and wine were great. The food was well prepared and presented.

I called to express my concern about kinship selling foie gras (which is the fatty liver of ducks/geese that is produced by force-feeding them until their livers are 10 times their normal size) but the person who answered was very rude and made duck noises to undermine my concern. If this is how they treat people who inquire about their practices, I do not recommend this place to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyIndescribable how good this place is.
Everything was incredible. Food, service and vibe were just...
Be the first to ReplyA cute modern restaurant.
We were surprised the duck was cooked very well. Every where we go the duck is not cooked very well. At Kinship we everything is cooked very well and tastes exceptional. My party ordered the spiced pekin duck breast, slowly braised beef short rib, sea scallops avgolemono, and broiled rainbow trout to share. The drinks were good as well as the service. Everyone was grand accommodating to make sure our meal experience was satisfactory. The dessert was good but not my favorite. We ordered a Kinship mochaccino and it had the mocha flavor but the banana was not my favorite combination with mocha but it was still good. The Cranberry concord vacherin was tart and cold ice cream. I think this dessert was better than the mochaccino. The ambience was intimate because the light was low but enough to read the menu. This place also offers coat check.

We came to celebrate a birthday, the restaurant knew we had a special occasion. We were stuck in traffic during a rush hour and called ahead to let the restaurant know we will arrive 20 min late (they hold tables for 15 min past the reservation time). They didn't want to accommodate us being late. That was the first negative impression of the night.Once we made it, we had to wait 10-15 min for a table. Not a big deal, but I couldn't see what the problem was since they had a lot of available tables. (Maybe no staff?)Drink menu was very disappointing. Two of us had to send the drinks back. When we did that, the waitress seemed extremely unhappy to serve us afterwards. Not sure if she was ignoring our table after that happened on purpose or she was just a bad waitress but every other need our table had, we had to ask for someone to go get her. All in all, I don't think it was worth the trip from Virginia. The waitress we had couldn't even pretend to be nice to us. We all noticed her "attitude". Drinks were not balanced. And had VERY little variety. The food was ok, however, but did not leave a lasting impression, and, honestly, did not outweigh the service.
Be the first to ReplyI went two weeks ago and left pretty massively disappointed.
I was on vacation in DC and was celebrating my friends birthday. Our reservation was for 3 at 9pm and after waiting there until 930, they mentioned that they overbooked the place and asked us to sit at the bar. That was already annoying but what did it even more were the realtors sitting nearby playing YouTube videos extremely loudly. I'm not sure what the Michelin bar is in DC but holy cow this was pretty terrible service. Foodwise there were a few standouts like the scallop and crudo, but the experience was marred by the inattention to detail. What would have been a fantastic night turned out to be pretty damn bland.
Be the first to ReplyThe right place to have an exquisite and peaceful dinner.
The sound level is so low that dining is a true pleasure. We all enjoyed our meal. The servers explained the menu and paid extreme attention to our table and need. From the apetizers to the desserts, every drop caresses our taste buds. The décor is unusual and elegant. An unsual point: the street windows created a lot of questions since the inscriptions are so discreet that it creates the doubt that it is the restaurant.I understand, now, why Kinship is for a lot of my friends, their favorite restaurant in DC.

Kinship has one Michelin star and it's located near Chinatown in DC! It is a little hard to find this they have a very simple entrance, it's really easy to walk by. When we first looked at the menu, we were a little confused. The waiter had to walk us through it. We started with the asparagus and yamaimo salad, lots of different flavors that mesh really well together! I was surprised for sure, it's not your basic salad. You really have to try to get a bit of each part. We also tried a pasta, but I cannot remember the name! For our main entrees, we got the Sauteed Pekin Duck Breast with poached rhubarb, pistachio butter, pea shoot duxelles and duck fat spoonbread. It was AMAZING. I would come back to eat this, but I know their menu changes. We also ordered the grilled martin farms beef ribeye with pommes darphin, grilled asparagus and hard boiled egg aioli. The bread was amazing. I could eat it all day! This did not disappoint. Overall, loved kinship and would definitely come back.

I was excited to try this Michelin Star restaurant so we had several different apps which were small but tasty and well done. The entrées we also small but they didn't really wow us in the taste department like many of the others I've been to all over the world. We also have 4 of the 5 dessert options and while they were pretty to look at there was only one that really grabbed us in taste. Overall the service and food was good just not great. Definitely room to grow.
Be the first to ReplyMy friend had wanted to try this Michelin star restaurant
My friend had wanted to try this Michelin star restaurant known for the roasted chicken so we decided to visit while I was in town and it did not disappoint. As many have said, the menu is a little confusing at first but the server will walk you through it. If you are ordering the roasted chicken, I recommend placing the order earlier (as our server recommended) as it takes around an hour to prepare. We ordered an ambitious amount of food and luckily my friend was able to pull his weight (for the most part). Before our food came, we were served black sesame bread, which was interesting but very enjoyable. I thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered: - Bluefin Tuna Tataki: light and refreshing yet flavorful; I personally really liked the dashi jelly that came with it- Lobster French Toast: I love lobster so this was a easy dish to love- Saffron Poached Halibut: halibut was cooked perfectly and flakey. Flavors were good too - Slow Braised Beef Short Rib: beef was very soft and tender, spinach was a little crispy on the top and the tiny potato cubes were a great side - what's not to like- Duck Foie Gras: very tasty but also very rich so beware (I knew what I was signing up for). I do wish the sauce at the bottom was a little lighter to balance out the richness of the foie gras - Roasted Chicken: comes with the CUTEST small parker rolls and a side of crispy potatoes that were nothing out of the ordinary. Chicken didn't disappoint - it was very juicy and flavorful; it also comes with a side salad with shredded chicken meat- Spiced Chai Mousse Cake: I'm usually just okay with chai but this dessert was delicious. The cake itself was moist and light; the pears and crunchy bits provided good contrast. The pear vanilla sorbet on the side was very yummy tooOverall, a very enjoyable dining experience. Not quite a full 5/5 experience but rounding up :)
Be the first to ReplyA true definition of a 4 star review.
Food: 5/5 -- everything we ate was incredible, especially the Veal. Crab cakes were incredible but very small. Tuna tataki and duck breast also very very good.Ambiance and their manager brought the experience down. As some others mentioned, if you get seated in the front section next to the bar, you have a totally different experience than the other 90% of patrons. No energy. The manager could not have cared less, and they clearly get complaints about it a lot.If you come here, insist on your reservation that you are seated in the main dining room.

Most of the Michelin star restaurants (1 stars) have been underwhelming. Kinship is one of the very few that I would go back to and I would say it is currently one of my favorite restaurants in DC. The menu changes up often so it's worthwhile to visit regularly and usually everything I order tastes good to great. Good portion sizes as well. The only improvement they could make is the pace of the service. I felt the gaps between courses were a good bit too long.
Be the first to ReplyFor Valentines Day, I choose to select Kinship this year
For Valentines Day, I choose to select Kinship this year and it certainly held up its reputation. The service was outstanding. I had arranged to have flowers waiting for my wife, figuring they would have placed them in a vase. Instead, they were neatly placed in a bouquet on the table so we could still see each others faces. I also had an opportunity to meet the world-class chef, in his kitchen, at the end of our dinner. The decor is that of modern rustic, with a hint of sophistication with whites and grey. This allows the food to stand out on the plates. We shared a few small dishes as well as the sharable roasted chicken. The desert was also amazing. The menu is organized in a unique experience driven way, adding to the elegance. We highly recommend Kinship for your next special occasion.

I have to admit that half of the food we ordered are amazing, especially the lobster toast, definitely one of the best I ever had. But the bread, the steak and roasted chicken are really just ok, by ok I mean don't deserve a Michelin star. The service is even worse. My server is quite rude, not sure if that is due to his attitude towards Asian or something else. I don't feel being welcomed at all. He does not want to spend any additional word with us. I chatted with the restaurant manager over the phone regarding of my reservation, feel the same way. I don't think the services met any Michelin standard, won't suggest to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyUnlike many Michelin restaurants, here is a la carte style
Unlike many Michelin restaurants, here is a la carte style which I personally prefer, so I get to try different varieties of dishes. Also, it is budget-friendly. Overall, my wife and I liked it (A lot of it was due to our wonderful server, Steven). Loved the lobster french toast, the Japanese beef and the foie gras; rest of the dishes were just as expected. If I have to rate it, I would give 3 out of 5 for the environment (when we first walked in, the restaurant was a bit louder than I expected. There was a private party, they got pretty excited and knocked over the chairs a few times), 4 out of 5 for the food and 5 out of 5 for the service. FYI, I don't think there is a sign for the restaurant, so it is very easy to miss if you drive there (no valet, but there is a parking 2 minutes away). Worth a second visit? Hum...maybe only served by Steven.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service, a cosy entry way for drinks.
The Greyhound cocktail was so good we got the same thing three times. The foie gras was also excellent. Overall very good food, a bit pricey but justifiable given the caliber and not overpriced for DC Michillin star resturants. Not somewhere particularly creative or showy but everything is well prepared and tastes delicious.
