Delicious food.
Set tasting menu with some additional options (like uni, wagyu, abalone, etc). Friendly service. Not good for groups. Due to limited seating, highly recommend making reservations.
Be the first to Reply5 stars for service and value, 4 stars for the food.
The restaurant itself is a bit small and loud, but they have alot of heated outdoor space and plenty of tables in that area. The tasting menu is 9 courses for $145 (you can add an additional abalone appetizer course for $24, but we passed) and we added the A5 wagyu for $59. The food came out at a perfect pace (a course about every 5-10 minutes) and was beautifully plated. The staff were fantastic, very attentive and plenty of them. By the end we were full. While each course was tasty and cooked perfectly, the only course that really stood out flavor wise was the first, the sweet potato soup with a beignet. The dish was delicious, rich creamy broth, with apples, toasted yulmu (reminded me of popcorn but crunchier), caviar, and a slight caramel flavor. The beignet was so soft and delicate and the whole dish together was perfection. The other dishes were good: red snapper ceviche (light and refreshing, the fennel underneath was a nice addition), eggplant skewers (wasabi sauce was a bit overpowering), halibut (perfectly cooked, not much in the way of seasoning and the broth was a bit salty), dry aged pork (tasty), duck/wagyu (both were enjoyable, but I actually preferred the duck, it was tender with crispy skin, I don't think the wagyu is worth it), shrimp bibimbap (could not find the shrimp, this dish was the most disappointing as it just tasted like bibimbap we have had at run of the mill Korean restaurants and was mainly just rice), date frozen yogurt (too sweet for my liking) and white chocolate covered chestnut ice cream (a bit strange flavor wise, the chestnut ice cream itself was good though, it had a weird sweet middle layer that I was not a fan of). Overall, a nice meal with great service and fairly good value for the quantity of food you receive. Dinner took a little over an hour.

Returned for another wonderful meal This time we were not rushed to make a theater date and enjoyed our 2.5 hour meal. Great balance of flavor and texture in every dish The dairy issue for one diner was handled beautifully. The subs looked the same or similar and tasted great another diner didn't care for the pork dish. The waitstaff noticed and offered to bring fish instead. Outstanding attention to the experience and the food. Great mokioli too.
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: An excellent Michelin tasting Menu for Korean food.
The theme of the restaurant Kochi- means skewer and so most dishes are presented on a skewer but they did a great job at elevating what is typically street food style presentation to michelin level. Each dish was carefully curated and all the flavors blend together so well. The service was wonderful and all the cocktails and teas we ordered paired well with the food.

Ambiance The restaurant is small with just a few seating tables inside paired with seats at the bar. The view on the other side of the bar is open so that you can see the food being prepared by the kitchen. There are also additional tables on the outside all year round. Food 5 stars for the food hands down. This restaurant has one of the best, if not the best, food I've had ever. Each dish was full of flavors that were unique, complimentary, extremely fresh, and absolutely delicious. The food was also displayed aesthetically beautiful on the plates. The only item on the menu I didn't like was the ice cream which was personally for me too sweet, but everything else was so amazing it pales in comparison to the experience we had. Service The service was excellent, the waiter checked on us frequently and explained the dishes very well. As there was a pre-fixed menu, they did a good job of spacing out each dish. We came here for our anniversary (they ask ahead of time if there is a special occasion) and they customized the menu to say "happy anniversary!" at the top of it, as well as provided complimentary champagne and an extra dessert not listed on the menu.

I just walked out, I'm upset enough that I'm writing a review in the car--I was asked to leave as soon as I paid the check as they "need the table". I was not expecting such an awkward, rude encounter after my meal--especially when I had no intentions of staying after settled the check. Listen to the reviews that say while ok, the food really isn't anything special. The entire time we kept thinking we should've just booked something like Le Bernadin in advance. I ignored them but kept thinking back to them over the course of the entire meal. The best course was the duck, everything else was just nothing to write home about. I definitely won't be back.

We came to New York to see a show on Broadway, and it was an easy decision for us to visit Kochi while we were local! We are big fans of Chef Sungchul Shim's other restaurants such as Mari and Mari.Ne, so this was a no-brainer. We were seated at the counter, which allowed us to see all the prep work being done. The menu was so delicious, and I am still thinking about the crab bibimbap with uni! We also added the supplemental course of abalone, which was one of the best bites I've ever had. Service was phenomenal and the place was gorgeous. We cannot wait to come back already!

Wow, wow, wow! This was the only reservation we made for our quick getaway to NYC. Table was ready right at 630. We sat on the street in an enclosed and heated tent. It was not as loud as the inside seating. Chef's table would have been super cool, but maybe next time. Service was on point and everyone was attentive. Lots of little extra touch here and there to really make you feel special. My partner opted for the wine pairing, which was one of the best he's ever had. The Sommelier was kind enough to also pour me a glass for 2 different courses. We added on the Abalone special, perfectly cooked and flavorful. We opted for one Wagyu substitute during the duck course, which had a special chef's compliment. The Wagyu literally melted in my mouth like butter. I'm glad farmers don't stress the cows. My favorite dish was the Pork. It was so tender and wonderful. I loved every sauce on that plate. It was the perfect main course. This tasting menu's dessert was in my top 2! (#1 is Central.) The Froyo and Ice Cream were light, yet full of brightness and just the right level of sweetness. I literally said "this is stupid good"! Great progression of dishes and smartly thought out. Once again my partner said this is one of the best wine pairing and he was still somewhat sober lol.

What more could you want? The food was amazing, surprising flavor and texture combinations, it was hard to pick my favorite among all the dishes... Service was also top notch, albeit space was a little tight.

Holy S**t This is one of those rare places where I left dazed, flabbergasted, and satisfied Every single course I had was memorable. I can't even describe in words how incredible each dish was. This tasting menu deserves to be showcased in MOMA as a representational caricature of perfect harmony. The duck entree and dessert courses changed my life. I honestly left this place feeling quite... sticky after the culinary onslaught Chef Shim threw in front of me. I would come back here in a heartbeat. It punches WELL above its weight. If I was one of these snooty Michelin raters I'd leave 3 stars. Come here you seriously won't regret it!!

Be the first to ReplyI did not enjoy my experience at Kochi.
So much so that I took a few weeks to think about it before reviewing. I even decided that I needed to dine at Kochi at least a second time before I wrote my review. Which is how I discovered that, as a single person dining alone, you cannot reserve at The Chef's Counter at Kochi. Wow. Just Wow.Here's what happened: I made a reservation for 2 at The Chef's Counter at Kochi, but my friend couldn't make it so I went into Resy to change my reservation to 1 and the moment I did that the only available reservations were for a table. I figured I'd work it out when I got there and reserved the table. I could not work it out when I got there. EVERYONE I met/interacted with at Kochi was WONDERFUL. Great people, good service. I figured I had somehow made a mistake when changing my Resy reservation and missed how to reserve at the counter. And, despite the fact that I don't even see the point of eating Omakase (which I do...a lot) not at the counter, I stayed and sat at the tiny table behind and below the people's back who were at the counter. Really really bad vibe. I put my head down, looked at my phone, tried to focus on the food. The food is FANTASTIC. Really really good. And the set price is also absolutely reasonable. Every thing I ate was amazing. I did the additional abalone course. I upgraded to the uni. Every "extra" available I did. I got the "full dining experience." But the extras available are that one abalone course. And, let's be honest, this is "tweezer food." GORGEOUS, DELICIOUS, not much of anything. Again! I eat Omakase ALL THE DARN TIME and then I do add ons that are always available. Kochi does not offer anything beyond the set Omakase menu. I did not know that. That's on me. What I will say is I was still hungry after my meal. That has never happened to me at any Omakase meal...I just don't want to have to top off my exquisite meal with pizza. You know? But, again. I thought I needed to visit again. And here is when I figured out you cannot reserve for one at The Chef's Counter. Because no matter the time of the day, the day of the week or the month of the year you try on Resy, there is never an available reservation for 1 at The Chef's Counter. BUT THERE ARE RESERVATIONS AVAILABLE FOR 2. You get what I'm saying? I have no idea why Kochi is doing this. In Hell's Kitchen. In NYC. As if dining out alone is somehow unusual? As if I myself don't do it, every single dining out meal in NYC?? It's a BAD Look Kochi. I guess the vibe Kochi is going for is the one I really disliked when I was there, but thought could be changed if I sat at the counter.Nope. Not an option.Omakase is not just a meal. It is an experience. It's not just one bite after another brought to your table where you sit, alone, without even a view of the (weirdly huge # of people working behind the counter...) preparation of0 the meal because it's completely blocked by the backs of the COUPLES who are allowed to sit there.3 stars for the actual food. It's that good. I cannot, in good conscience give fewer than 3 stars. But I will not be back.

Everything from taste menu to services was impeccable!! We loved every dish and didn't have one complaint. We got tasting menu with one A5 and one uni add-on. Personally I think it's worth to try if that's your thing but not a must as the skirt steak was equally amazing as well in my opinion. Kochi definitely exceeded my expectation and will definitely return in the future. Ps I didn't know they had one Michelin star but after knowing it all made sense and well deserved!
Be the first to ReplyWe arrived here on time and got seated at the chef's table.
You definitely have to make a reservation in advance. This place was popping on Saturday around 9:30pm. We came here to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. For our tasting menu course, we added an order of one abalone, one A5 wagyu and a sea urchin for the King Salmon bbim bbim bap. The skirt steak tasted so much better than the A5 wagyu. It wasn't worth adding the A5 wagyu and the sea urchin in the King Salmon bbim bbim bap unless you love to eat sea urchin. The abalone was good, but I didn't try it with the shrimp sauce since I am allergic to it. The cocktail Respect for elders with gin was perfect. They give you a froyo and ice cream at the end. I have to say the ice cream was delicious! It was like a haagen daz vanilla stick with chocolate covering. Inside it had a berry drizzle with some chocolate crunchies on the outside too. Additionally, there was a strawberry compote on the side. It was delicious! Overall I would say most of the courses came with a stick on it and the seafood was fresh. Each dish was well composed and executed. The flavors complimented each other. My boyfriend loved this place and asked if there is another Korean restaurant that can beat this one. Lastly, the service was excellent and on par.

I brought my mom here for both of our first times and it was a great experience. I booked ~1.5 weeks in advance just in case since there isn't a lot of seating. The servers took the time to explain the menu and optional add-ons and was very helpful with drink suggestions. If you'd like to see the food being prepared in front of you, I'd suggest booking at the bar vs dining area. The pork and halibut dishes blew my mind because the meat was cooked perfectly! I literally said it was the best pork I've tasted in my life Overall, a great experience and I was glad I didn't feel too heavy / overstuffed by the end of it!
Be the first to ReplySo I had very high expectations going into Kochi.
Being Korean myself I never found myself saying "Wow that reminds me of home" rather just nodding in a "Oh that tastes good" not a "WOW THAT IS AMAZING", so a little sad about that. Service was nice but wish the servers spoke up a bit when explaining the dish. Also if I'm spending $460 for 2 people I expect to be relatively full by the time I leave. I literally walked 2 blocks down the street right after to stop by a deli to get a sandwich because I was still starving. For the price and experience I'd probably not recommend this place to anyone nor would I go back. It was decent food, just very stingy in their portions. I get that food is an art but if you want to charge $460 for 2 people the least you can do is make sure your customers are satiated. If you provided not only culinary art, the food made me drool and I left the place feeling just full enough, shoot I'd be happy to spend over $500. Price is not the issue, rather the relativity and worth. Is this place worth my time? Unfortunately, no.
Be the first to ReplyFood: 7.
7/10Service: 9/10Ambience: 8/10I had date night at Kochi on a Friday evening. While service was excellent and we got the best counter seat, we felt that the food was average considering the price and restaurant category. The ingredient and meat quality were all great, but the dishes overall were mediocre and forgettable. We got the cocktails but forgot the names and don't see it online. I believe one of them was an espresso Negroni. They were both strong drinks, and not my cup of tea. My personal favorite was the Amberjack Hwe. I don't normally like red meat and pork but I thought the the Flat Iron Steak dish was done well. You can substitute the steak with wagyu for $56 and add perigold truffle for another $25. We passed on both of these. The steak already has a lot of flavors so adding truffle seems like an overkill IMO. The pork was a chunk of tender, juicy meat and was my date's favorite dish. We both loved the tomato gochujang sauce that came with the Shrimp Twigim, so I wish the sauce came on the side so I could easily scoop it onto my shrimp. We also got the Abalone ($24 supplement) which was good but we'd pass on this dish next time. I added sea urchin (supplement $14) to my salmon bibimbap. Portion of sea urchin was good and it tasted okay. It had an oceany aftertaste. I definitely prefer uni from Japan. I would pass on adding uni to the bibimbap unless you like Santa Barbara uni--then go for it. The deserts were all average. I liked the black sesame ice cream sandwich better than the froyo but the black sesame flavor was not there.

Food - 5/5 Compared to similar tier Korean tasting menus, this one ranks first on my list in terms of food. Presentation is elegant (love the tableware that they use) and every dish has depth in flavor with many different ingredients that work together. My favorites were the sunchoke (especially the soup that comes with it), Hwe, and the pork. The skewer dishes were pretty quirky and were also good, but the sticks were really oily/sticky, even where you're supposed to hold it.Interior - 3.5/5 I would highly recommend sitting at the counter or any indoor seating. When I came, our group got seated outside and it was not the best experience: the seats were oddly moist/wet, which left our pants soaked. the heaters are angled in a way that only the inside seats were heated. It is also way quieter outside than inside where it's bustling with music and you're sitting very close to other diners (for me, this seems more of an authentic dining experience). Service - 5/5 The servers were great - were very receptive with any concerns we had (one of the steaks were overcooked, and they were quick to bring out a new one to replace it without any attitude).
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely delicious food.
Every bite was amazing and each dish was just so different from one another. the place is pretty casual, servers were very friendly. Only reason I took a star off is because I felt that it needed a couple more courses for the price. I left slightly hungry which shouldn't happen after spending 140 on a meal. It also just felt very quick- I would have liked it to last longer given the price.
Be the first to ReplySuch an incredible experience.
Everything was superb, I don't eat raw fish so they made a different version of a couple dishes to accommodate that. The service and atmosphere were also great. Highly recommended!

This review is long overdue, but we LOVED our dinner at Kochi. I really appreciated the ambiance of this place. It's a nice restaurant with amazing food, but doesn't feel pretentious or stuffy at all. The service was also great. I never had to ask for anything, it seemed like they just knew what we needed. For the food, every single dish was superb. We did upgrade the steak course to the Wagyu with truffle, which I highly recommend. I would go back in a heartbeat!

It's good but nothing wowed me and was not worth the hefty price of $135 pp. Service was good and the ambiance is very casual. Unfortunately I can't say I highly recommend this place...

The service was good and the food was absolutely fantastic and I enjoyed the selection of their food. The short Rib and Skirt Steak were so good and very delicious. The meat were so good and very tender. Its also well-seasoned and had a great time there. Excellent menu. Will dine in again.

My favorite meal over the past few months! I'm not surprised this place earned its first Michelin star in such a short period of time. The tasting menu at Kochi is excellent. Skewer based Korean food, with a seafood focus. Each dish was fantastic - multiple times I thought to myself how familiar everything tasted, but at the same time elevated and taken to another level. Such unique flavor combinations, and the fish/proteins were all cooked perfectly. The service was attentive and flawless throughout the entire meal. There is a ton of attention to detail, all the way from the Jono Pandolfi plates and bowls, to the the custom aprons worn by all the staff. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, which you can specify on reservation. This place needs to be on every New Yorker's restaurant hit list!
