Perfect spot to grab dumplings and noodles before we saw a play. (Hand Cut Noodles, Scallion Pancake with Sliced Beef, XLB Soup Buns)

Great shen jian bao, marinated beef roll, rice shumai, pan dumplings. My go-to takeout restaurant, haven't had anything i didn't like.

Large open seating area, usually very quiet which is a nice break from midtown madness. Diverse menu, my favorites are the spicy beef noodle soup and the dim sum. Have been a regular here for years and service is always amazingly fast, for both dine in and take out. Food is reliably good and reminds me of excellent home cooking. They also have bubble tea!
Be the first to ReplyCame on a Friday night and place was packed.
Had to wait about 30 minutes for a table to come available.Great variety of offerings and everything was tasty.Would definitely come back.Tip: try to get a table in the back. Was seated at table closest to the door which quickly becomes a wind tunnel on cold night with a lot of opening and shutting of the door.

I am a frequent flier here when I visit NYC because it is so convenient. We were so busy eating that I forgot to snap a picture of the pan fried buns and red bean buns. It has a Michelin star for a reason! The soup dumpling skin is soft and chewy and it has a good amount of soup inside. However, I wish the crab and pork XLB had a little more crab flavor.
Be the first to ReplyGreat option for Shanghainese food in midtown.
I actually didn't have the highest expectations because of the location, but I really was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the fried pork buns. These did not have a traditional look, and also were not crispy enough. But they did taste really good. And the price was fairly reasonable. I also ordered the fatty beef hand cut noodle soup, which I also enjoyed. Noodles were cooked well, and the beef was tender. Its really big too... I couldn't finish it. Its on the smaller side and gets busy, so try get there early. Also FYI if you come in a party of 2 you will likely need to share a table.

The food was pretty good, scenery and general vibe was also quite nice, however customer service could be improved. I would come here again however the food seems generally overpriced for what you get

Be the first to ReplyThe wife found our new favorite place.
Excellent food. Outstanding service. Very good heat after walking in from the cold weather (can't tell you how appreciated that is) and great atmosphere BOTH times that we came. Did I mention the great, excellent food?!? Yep. I/we had the scallion pancakes (no beef) and hand pulled ramen noodles and egg fried rice and vegetables soup between the two times that we visited. We will definitely be back. SOON!!

Server did not care about my food allergies and the ramen broth tasted like something from a can. Not to mention the chicken in the broth which had the consistency of slime.

Not a fancy place, but the soup dumplings ("steam buns", xiao long bao) are AMAZING. This location has more seating than others in the city and could handle medium groups. Scallion pancake, pan fried dumplings, hand pulled noodles, are also great options but I always go for the classic pork soup dumplings. Quite a robust menu, everything I've had is very tasty.

Soup dumplings are to die for! The ramen was good too, but I'd definitely get the dumplings as a whole meal if I come back.
Be the first to ReplyNot a bad option! Small place with a long name.
Prob wouldn't seek it out in the future, but you're not gonna get anything bad if you do find yourself here. Spicy beef hand-pulled noodles -- decent & actually spicy (yay)Pork soup dumplings -- decentPeking pork buns -- decent, sweet, could serve as a meaty dessert

We ordered the beef ramen soup and it didn't have any flavor. We tried adding sriracha, soy sauce, just about anything to add flavor but didn't help. Beef had a weird after taste and didn't look like actual beef (I am a cattle rancher and this didn't look or taste correct.) We also got a chicken ramen, the chicken was pure white and looked like rubber, felt and taste like rubber. Was not good. Green tea tasted like warm water. Only thing that i feel was very tasty was the pork soup dumplings and my beer. They were very good. We won't be going back here. (Presentation was great but just not impressed with flavor)

This is one of the most amazing hole-in-the-wall places!!! The money they are not spending on decor is used to create fabulous, tasty, dishes! The dumplings, scallion pancakes, Chinese greens are all incredible.

As a noodle fanatic and a veteran from Flushing, Queens - where you can get a bowl of delicious and fresh steamy noodles at about any time you want..this spot was underwhelming. I cannot speak for the dining experience because I ordered via UberEats. I ordered the Spicy Beef Ramen and the Beef Ramen with Chili Oil - Except, the Beef Ramen came but no chili oil anywhere what so ever. To improvise, I had to take some of the chili oil from my Spicy Beef Ramen over to the other ramen. The food arrived cold which is not necessary the restaurants fault I would say, but the noodles were a bit too soft and not as chewy as I thought. I hear that the noodles are handmade but I didn't get that homemade texture that I'm usually used to. I warmed my noodles up in the microwave and proceeded to sip the broth and all I cold taste was the oil..I couldn't taste anything else..there was no flavor in the broth at all besides the chili oil.

I live and die by the soup buns...!!!! Enjoy the deep taste of the broth encased in the dough. Also enjoy the ramen AND the short ribs!
Be the first to ReplyI've been to this place quite a few times over the years
I've been to this place quite a few times over the years and have ordered both takeout and eaten at the restaurant. This place is a solid 3.5 holistically, but if you know what to avoid and what to order, the items they make well are consistent enough that they deserve a 4.What to avoid:-Noodle soups (ramen) do not seem to be one of their strengthsI can only speak to the beef and chicken ramen (one ordered by a friend and one ordered by me in the past). After that, there was no reason to order others as both proteins were pretty bland and the noodles didn't have much flavor. What to get:-Scallion pancakes, classic, crispy and made well-Sticky Rice Shao Mai, a new find but surprisingly good. Lots of flavor and umami from the shiitake mushrooms-Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Buns, cooked well and tasty-Soup Dumplings (called Steamed Pork Buns on the menu), pretty solid. Not my absolute favorite in the city but they satisfy the craving!Other friends and family I've come with have ordered different pan fried noodles and those seemed to be much better than the soup noodles (more flavor since it's stir fried with sauce). For takeout during Covid, they got new takeout containers so that ordering soup dumplings wouldn't be a total bust! Now each soup dumpling is separated so that they don't stick together when you try to peel them out of the container. Always have these with the black vinegar and shredded ginger!Overall, with somewhat limited options for Chinese in Midtown East, this place has some solid items. Worth coming back to (I tend to get dumplings mostly) but skip the noodle soups.

We ordered take out from here on Christmas Day and it did not disappoint. The bao buns were beyond incredible. They were so juicy and delicious. The shrimp ramen was perfect - the noodles were amazing and they were generous with the shrimp. This place will definitely be on our must-list when we come to the city.

Vegetable Malatan -- Unbelievably good!! Taste like hotpot and even spicier! All of the utensils were wrapped and place is very clean, and the people extremely polite -- Can't ask for a better experience!

Came in really early before flight and was basically the first customer there. Plates/ wooden chopsticks/ spoons were saran wrapped which I really liked and thought was actually really smart. Ordered the wontons, soup dumplings, and beef noodle soup. Honestly the broth for the beef noodle soup/ wontons were sooo good! And frankly I saw some bad reviews about the soup dumplings but I thought they were AMAZING! Soup was hot and flavorful, the meat was how it should be, and the skin was the right amount of thickness. I personally though the soup dumplings were far better than the one's at Joe's Shanghai. The dumplings were also fantastic and really reminded me of childhood. Honestly the drinks were just ok though, got the honey lemon tea which I think had some passion fruit in it (??) and the hot lemon tea. Wasn't really a fan.The service here is also just alright, they're quick but I think they do zone out a little bit or maybe it's cause it was early morning so we did have to wave them down. Overall good experience though!

Deep, deep down. I love this dish so much. Great on a winter night. Also love the sticky rice shumai... like who doesn't want their carbs wrapped in carbs?!? Prices are reasonable for Times Square and service is quick and to the point.
