I came to Kura for their omakase, and also had some warm
I came to Kura for their omakase, and also had some warm sake as it was rainy April night in NYC. Their omakase was very on-point, and the service was fantastic. The restaurant is very small, with only 14 or so seats at the bar and a 4-person table away from the bar. We sat at the bar. I originally made a reservation here because I thought it was the same spot as where I had omakase with 3 other friends back in ~2018 or so, but I now realized that that place is actually Cagen, down the street, and Kura has been at this location for the past ~8 years. I was at first disappointed, but then I decided, why not, try a new place? And, I'm glad I did! I had a great time, and the food was delicious. There were 3 chefs helping to prepare our meal, and one lady who helped with miscellaneous drinks orders. It was easy to talk and interact with the chefs, and I found the meal to be very delicious and well-priced. It is relatively a bit cheaper than Cagen, and equally as delicious!

A surprise birthday dinner with my boyfriend, we dined at Kura for their 15 piece omakase (they also have options for 12 pieces and more than 15 pieces). We sat at the bar and it was amazing to see the chefs make each piece. As we ate, the chef called out the name of each piece as he placed it on the counter for us to eat. The fish was amazingly fresh and was a great temperature with the warm sushi rice. It was hard not to quickly devour each piece. The only complaint I would have is the inconsistency in wasabi for each piece, as some pieces had more wasabi than others. We were also given miso soup, green tea, and dessert - a black sesame macaron with mochi inside. I'm a sucker for black sesame and absolutely loved it. The service was great as well, refilling my water cup the moment it was empty (I drank a lot of water). Even when we finished everything, the waitress asked if we wanted more green tea, which we kindly declined as we planning on heading out soon anyway. For timing, we finished all the sushi pieces in 30 min, and with the additional dishes at the end, our full meal was a little over an hour. A great place for omakase.

We go every year on our anniversary and we've been together for five years. The Omakase and plum wine is worth every penny. One of the best kept secrets in all of Manhattan.
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi I've ever had in my life.
The food AND service are completely top-notch. If you are in NYC, I would encourage you to splurge and go here.

I wanted to love this place but unfortunately wasn't happy with the freshest of the fish!!! Very disappointed
Be the first to ReplyMy first omakase experience, so I have nothing to compare
My first omakase experience, so I have nothing to compare this to. The best part was definitely the service - the servers were extremely nice and the chef was having a great time and was very attentive. Each member of our party got a different number of pieces, which I thought was nice that they could accommodate that. Most of the pieces I had were great, like the fatty cuts of salmon and tuna, eel, uni, and the handroll. I was not a fan of the squid and the sweet tamago. Not finishing one of the pieces is really not an option, but at least it's only a small amount if you really don't like something. Since I went for a celebratory birthday dinner, they brought out some brown sugar ice cream with a candle in it as part of dessert, and took our group's picture with a Polaroid camera and gave us the photo, which I thought was a super thoughtful touch! It's now hanging on my fridge so I can be reminded of this meal every time I open the fridge door. Someone mentioned the pacing being pretty fast - this is true, I noticed that if someone was talking a lot, they would be given their next piece before even finishing their current piece on their plate. The group next to us finished in like 35 minutes.

Such an authentic omakase experience! The restaurant is tucked away in a busy street in East Village and there were only about 10 seats. You know it's authentic when every chef and host/waitress speaks Japanese, haha. They offer 3 tiers of omakase, 12 piece for $100, 15 for $125 or 18 for $150. The pieces did not include 2 starters, tamago, a dessert and tea so this was an amazing deal if you ask me! Regarding the different tiers, we were curious what the difference in pieces were so we asked the chef. For our visit, the 12-pieces didn't include horse mackerel, conch and otoro. My bf and I both opted for the 15 piece bc we wanted otoro. Some highlights were their scallop which was very rich, the ebi was super creamy and sweet. Their chutoro was buttery enough to be mistaken for otoro! The anago was also a great balance of sweet yet smoky. Honestly, after this meal, I believe it's very much possible to be full from omakase! We are typically still hungry afterwards or feel just right but with Kura, we actually felt pretty stuffed.I do have to mention; the meal felt a little rushed because the chef worked so fast between pieces. We would finish one piece and our next piece would be ready.. something to keep in mind if you prefer taking your time. Beside that- our glasses and cups were never empty and the waitresses were very attentive. Overall, super affordable, filling and satisfying meal, and a great experience! I would definitely recommend and will be back for sure!
Be the first to ReplyTruly a gem.
Understated and perfect in every way that sushi ought to be. Presentation, food and timing were spot on. Went for a celebratory birthday dinner and was brought also a special dessert that was obviously also artisanal not just pulled out from somewhere. The 15 piece was decided to be the ideal size but 18 did not disappoint.

It's...ok. Not much to complain and not much to praise about. No big misses and nothing impressive either. The experience is ok. But you can easily find another place within similar price range. The sushi was not bad. A little bland for some pieces maybe. Maybe there's something missing in the ambience? We sit at the table instead of the counter fyi. Maybe that's why? Probably spoiled by the broad selection of omakase in nyc. Fairly good place in general. May not worth a second trip though.

I was looking for the perfect Sushi experience in NYC for days. I must have passed this place a hundred times in my search but it was hidden behind a nondescript, windowless storefront on St Marks with no signage and only a curtain for entry. This was hands down the most remarkable culinary experience of my lifetime. The staff took great care to ensure that I had absolutely everything that I wanted. The chef took his time in preparing each omakase course, gently laying each piece in front of me. Remarkably fresh food. Cozy, tucked away atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyIt's OK.
The netas are too big for the amount of shari. The balance is completely off. The problem is, the netas themselves are underwhelming so the whole experience doesn't feel great. There are three chefs and many more seats than other omakase places. It feels like a factory and this place simply churns out sushi and rotate as many customers as possible. All of that is fine as long as the food delivers, but the food is mediocre at best.Go here if you are in the area and want a fast no frills omakase experience of typical netas that are above average for typical sushi restaurants but sub par for omakase establishments. Think: not quite McDonald's but Five Guys of omakase places. Five Guys serve good burgers, no doubt, but far from gourmet, right? Exactly like that for sushi omakase is this place.
Be the first to ReplyKind of a hidden gem as I only heard about it from a friend
Kind of a hidden gem as I only heard about it from a friend of a friend but pleasantly surprised and one of my favorite, more affordable omakases in the city!Great experience overall, loved the pieces that they gave. Mantis shrimp is one of my favorites and I was so happy they had it here! Scallop is also one of my favorites and it was amazing here as well. Shrimp is another one of my favorites and it was sweet and creamy here. I loved that all my favorite pieces were included in this omakase! Forgot to take a picture of the pressed mackerel unfortunately but also a great piece. Saw a few hand rolls that looked super appetizing - definitely would have gotten extras but felt pretty full so maybe next time. Price wise, it is super affordable and there are 3 different options. We opted for the middle, 15 piece one and left feeling full. The pieces don't include the dessert or the appetizers so definitely great value! The dessert at the end was one of two choices but being a matcha lover, I obviously had to choose the matcha ice cream. Overall, would definitely come back!

Delicious! You have the option of 12 piece omakase for $100, 15 pieces for $125, or 18 pieces for $150. They have a wide variety of fishes and seafood, and they prepare each piece so wonderfully. My favorite was the eel, uni, and otoro tuna. The sushi chefs are nice and courteous, and the environment was great!
Be the first to ReplyMy all time favorite omakase spot in the city.
They are so consistent every time and just never misses. I've been going every two months or so & just literally never had a bad experience. Really reasonably priced for the qualify of the fish served!

Delicious evening at Kura, got the 18 piece omakase which had unique pieces like monkfish and abalone! The service was amazing, very attentive, felt taken care of! 18 pieces is definitely filling but it was a great experience trying all the flavors of fish. This place is a must try for omakase lovers!
Be the first to ReplyIf you're an omakase lover, you've arrived.
Although I'm still making my way through NYC's omakase scene, I can vouch that the quality, taste and overall experience is better than NYC alternatives (eg Sushi Nakazawa, Sugarfish). Some of the pieces here are truly exceptional, a cut above top Seattle omakase spots (Wataru, Kashiba, Shiro's, Taneda, etc.)... and that's saying something, coming from a fish mecca!I chose the 18-course option for $150, a super reasonable price for the quality of what you get, and the size of the pieces (large cuts and a massive portion of eel). The courses started with a marinated tuna app that was delightful, followed by the best chutoro I've had in my life... I will think fondly about that piece forever (*tears up*). Over the course of the meal, some of the pieces were not as good as others (to be expected in US omakase); however, the floor is super high. Other exceptional pieces were the amberjack, otoro, sea trout, eel, and weirdly enough - the tamago cake at the end. I never love the tamago piece at most places - it's just not really my thing, but this was so juicy and delightful! I also want to add that we ordered a carafe of daiginjo that was the perfect semi-dry floral beverage to carry us through the meal. I will say that although the Maine and Santa Barbara uni were great, one way to have upped the experience would've been to swap Maine for Hokkaido, but at this price point, I couldn't really be disappointed. I would highly recommend trying this place to anyone who has the chance to. The full experience is awesome, and you won't be disappointed by the flavor and texture explosion coming for you!!
Be the first to ReplyWatching the hands of the chef is like watching the hands
Watching the hands of the chef is like watching the hands of a magician, with a flourish, suddenly like magic, the most incredible bite appears before your eyes. It was unclear who was having a better evening, the chef, or the guest. He takes such delight in his craft. My only sadness was that it was all over too soon - though I was so full I could not have eaten another bite. Does Kura translate to Love? - well it does in my book.

This was my first time having omakase and boy was it heavenly. I don't like raw fish that much but Kura completely changed my perspective The fish was so fresh and it didn't have that fishy and chewy taste I get from cheap sushi places. Obviously it was a bit expensive because of the omakase but definitely worth it as a treat

Behind a hidden door on St Marks lies Kura, an impressive and understated omakase experience. We ordered the largest omakase, which was 18 pieces and several extra dishes for $150. I've found that many upscale omakase restaurants range from 10-14 pieces and start at $150 per person, so this was by far the most generous I've had. That being said, sometimes quality supersedes quantity. Kura was good, but not great... I was impressed with half of the sushi pieces and content with the other half. The seared pieces were seriously excellent, but some of the more simple cuts of tuna, salmon, yellowtail did not melt in my mouth as is often the case at a nice omakase bar. Many of the pieces also lacked flavor and creativity. High value and worth a try, but not the best omakase in NYC.
Be the first to ReplyNothing special about this omakase place.
We got the 18 piece omakase with an additional uni hand roll. The head chef (older) guy was just breezing through each piece. Half of the time he didn't even bother telling us the name of the piece. He was more concerned with talking to his other sushi chef. The pieces were all pre-cut and ready to be thrown on rice. Definitely not worth the hype and for spending over $500 on tax and tip. I would say there are definitely better options in the city.
