La Vara Reviews from The Last Year
La Vara is okay if you're in the mood for Spanish-inspired
La Vara is okay if you're in the mood for Spanish-inspired cuisine. I've been twice over the past year and have enjoyed some of their tapas-style dishes, though I did find on both occasions that some dishes were unexpectedly heavy from lots of oil. With how expensive these dishes are (tapas, so expect a few bites per dish), I expected more in terms of freshness and flavor. The seating is a bit of a mess as well. The outdoor space in the back is either searingly hot or icebox cold, never comfortable. With a cramped interior, it makes it challenging to find a good table here. Service is good, but I think there are better Spanish restaurants to be quite honest.

Expensive tapas! Quality is ok but tapas should not cost the price of a main. Good service.
Meh
Having just been to Spain, we were trying to get that experience here. In 2023 it delivered, in 2024 it did not. The dishes were mild without much interest and flavor. We were very disappointed from when we first visited in 2023.
Fantastic Local Restaurant
The service was excellent. Very knowledgable about each dish. We ordered about 12 of the small dishes. All were wonderfully prepared and easy to share. The timing of the dishes as they came out was wonderful. Easy to share and each offered a special flavor or twist to normal tapas style plates.
The food here is very good.
Cochinillo is delicious. and the atmosphere is fine and blessedly not loud or over-designed. Ive been here several times. However, Im not going back. I had to cancel my reservation, which I did several hours before the meal in a response to a text confirmation the restaurant sent me, giving me the option of informing them of a cancelation. They still charged me $75 to not eat there. I get that cancelations are a problem for restaurant owners, but really? It's not like I was a no-show. I see that this is a widespread policy now, but I find this to be the height of tackiness and inhospitality, especially for a fairly expensive restaurant in a rich, gentrified neighborhood. What a trun-off. They just lost a once-a-quarter customer with that one.

This place has been on my must visit list for a long time, and I'm so happy I got to go recently! Loves: + Food is good, with standouts being: rossejat ($38) which is like paella, croquetas ($10), and cochinillo ($38). + Very accommodating with reservations! If you don't see something available, they encourage you to call them and they really mean it. + Nice service and clean space This place is very nice and has received a Michelin star in the past. I do find some of the dishes to be standouts and some less so, but overall I had a positive experience here. Thank you, La Vara!
It's a phenomenal establishment.
La Vara beats expectations every time. Their menu is great. Their service is delightful and it couldn't be more charming.
Great tapas
This is a wonderful tapas place! We had a lovely table in the front which was. very comfortable! The food was great: especially the fideo, the chickory salad, the deviled eggs, the anchovies! We asked for wine recommendations and were steered to reasonably priced unusual wines. The noise level was low. Service was attentive. We plan to return again!
The restaurant is tucked away in a nice resi area.
Has a very homey/local feel to it. We came here for dinner and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender served us and was great and he has been there for many years. Not only did he make great cocktails, he knew the menu very well. We started with the shishito peppers and croquette - that day, salted cod. Both came out reasonably quick and cooked perfectly. For mains: 1) beef jowl - best dish of the night and we can eat plates of them; uniquely prepared, flavorful, and not something you can find in many places; 2) suckling pig - nice portion to share, perfectly crispy and tender meat; if you like lechon/kalau pork then this is a must-have; 3) rosseejat - seafood noodle dish with just the right amount seafood and not too salty and noodles were just right - served in cast iron so get scrape a bit of noodles off the bottom and sides if u like that; and 4) double whipped choco flan - a killer combo with olive oil, touch of sea salt and brandied cream; light, not sweet. We were already full after mains but so glad we finished with this; we could have had another one. Will definitely be back.

Walked in on a Friday night right when they opened and we got seated immediately. The server was helpful in recommending dishes. The octopus was very delicate. The mussels were definitely the favorite of the bunch. I think all the food was pretty standard. There was a particular dish that I felt was worth going back for.

This place is an absolute gem! Elevated Spanish tapas in an elegant setting with excellent service. This place had been on my bookmark list forever ever since they had a Michelin star from years ago. I finally made my way over here, and I was not disappointed. Even though they've since lost their Michelin star, I can say this place is still worth a visit. First the setting and the vibes are absolutely amazing. Felt like a lot of locals from the Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill neighborhood frequent this place. And although I am about $5-6 million short on owning a brownstone in the neighborhood, I can dine here every once in a while and pretend I'm one of the cool kids. Service is impeccable. Friendly, attentive, and extremely helpful - you definitely feel like VIP here. They are helpful in giving wine recommendations and have an extensive list for any occasion and price point. I really loved all the dishes we had - perfect for ordering a ton and sharing as a couple or group. Menu overall had a seafood bent. Price point is definitely on the higher side, but I felt like the overall experience as a whole made it worth it. Overall A+, and worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood.

Normally, I would give this restaurant less stars for the price (high for the portion sizes and what you're getting); however, the food quality/freshness, balance of flavors, preparations, etc were honestly on point. It's been awhile since I've been to a NYC restaurant that executes across all 6-8 dishes well. We had the croquettes, pulpo, ajo blanco, persian cucumber, judias a la plancha, morros, torta santiago and wine/cocktails. Everything, including the drinks, was stellar. My favorite was definitely the morros, followed by the pulpo. The almond cake dessert was solid, but I would honestly opt to try something else when I'm back. It felt a little dry for my taste (but it was still good). If you're on the fence, I'd recommend giving this a shot!

I have a reservation that includes $50 per person deposit that they add onto the end of the bill. How will I get that back?
