Italian date night spot
My first time here, though dining companion had been here before as part of a paid encounter. He was paying customer. Small place, so best to make a res, which we did. Attentive service, nice and crisp salad. Saw bottles of wine on every table; a few folks who had no res were just drinking. Not sure of they stayed to eat. Nice pasta, had vegetarian options as well as meat options. Nice dessert menu, but went to Jeni's across the street. Good place for a date or Tinder meetup. Not so much for a business meal. Too intimate.

WONDERFUL DINNER!! We dined at this gem prior to attending the Marine Corps Evening Dress Parade on May 5. First, Barracks Row is a fantastic neighborhood full of diversity & tremendous people. Lavagna is a short 3 block walk down 8th Street from the Eastern Market Metro. Our dinner was fabulous! We ordered a calamari appetizer--perfection with a light cornmeal crust. I enjoyed a delicious entree of Carbonara & my sweetie had an Italian sausage entree. Both were hot, tasty & beautifully served. I had a refreshing Venetian Spritzer with my meal. The staff was quite busy, but never missed a beat with service & greetings. Super nice guys!! Don't miss this great place.

The food is fine and the portions are huge. However, my pasta sauce was a bit overwhelmed by (sweet) peppers. Could barely appreciate the pasta itself. The biggest disappointment was the service. We must have been assigned a new and inexperienced waiter. His English was limited (no, he did not speak Italian), he did not understand the wine list, and the pacing felt a bit rushed. Will we go back? Maybe -- we live in the area -- but there are also many other options. Since it might have been an "off-night" we should probably give them another chance sometime.

We had a party of 7 on the night we went for dinner and we were so glad we chose this restaurant. The homemade pasta and sauces were amazing! Our waiter was really funny and the service was exceptional. Hope someday I am back in DC because I would love have another meal there.
Be the first to ReplyBest Carbonnara; great wine on Wednesdays
It was time to eat out again and Lavagna was the perfect spot for my daughter and me. Our host/waiter was welcoming and appropriately attentive; the beet salad and pasta dishes were delicious - "the best carbonnara around!," my daughter made clear, and with 1/2 price bottles of wine on Wednesday, it was a very good deal. The restaurant is quiet, with tables well spaced for private conversation and Covid safety. We couldn't recommend it more.

Excellent food and service! Everthing we tried was delicious and the portions are ample. The bolognese was probably our favorite dish. Service was never rushed.
Be the first to ReplyNice restaurant, friendly staff, good food.
This is a two level, somewhat casual restaurant with a good menu to please many tastes. At 5 on a Saturday, the bar had many guests, which is nice. The craft cocktails are good, and they enjoy serving them to you(some bars prefer you ignore them). The staff is friendly and attentive. The food was fresh and well prepared. Worth trying, we will likely return.

Friendly, attentive staff from the moment we step through the door. I've been here twice - service, food, and wine are consistently excellent. The atmosphere is cozy and warm...definitely that 'just around the corner in the neighborhood' feel. Luckily, my recent visit was on half price bottle of wine night so of course my daughter and I splurged. The pesto and sausage pasta was so delicious I didn't want it to end. I could go on and on...and I can't wait to go back during my next visit to DC.
Be the first to ReplyVery good, excellent service
Ordered calamari as an appetizer, then bison short ribs as an entre. Calamari was great.,the bison good, but a bit on the fatty side. Thoroughly enjoyed their double chocolate pudding dessert, excellent! Tuesday and Sunday, 1/2 priced bottles of wine!!! Service was excellent! Will likely return before we leave the city.

Went on Sunday and they had 1/2 price bottle of wine advertised. We got a 1/2 price bottle of Brunello and it was wonderful! Vinny (the grandson) ordered the starter - Salumi Pick 3 and it was a great antipasto board. Alison had the pasta special, Vinny had the lamb chops and I had the bison short ribs that were to die for! We finished it up with a lemon zest cheesecake (Vinny) and a double chocolate pudding Alison and me). We were the only ones there at 17:00 but when we left the place was packed!

My wife, I, and another couple dined at Lavagna before a Friday night play at Arena Stage. Interestingly, we had not found an online presence for Lavagna in the past so we had overlooked this restaurant as we worked our way through Barracks Row restaurants. The other couple split a fish main dish, my wife had home-made ravioli, and I had home made, thick spaghetti with sauce Bolognese. We split a bottle of wine. Food was delicious. Service was quick and friendly, but not obtrusive. Atmosphere is like a small neighborhood restaurant. We will try it again in the future, but will arrive hungry and try some of the main dishes, like short ribs.
