Well let give you an insight about this place.
Most people would feels awkward not tipping when we eat out but what if most of your tips goes in the pocket of the owners and not the servers.
Be the first to ReplyLe Cheval doesn't disappoint.
I love the LC combo or the Claypot but there is so much to choose from. It's an Oakland staple.

Ordered the Banh Hoi Thit Nuong and my life instantly changed. It's a satisfying umami bomb. Note that it requires assembly so be prepared to get your hands messy. Soak the rice paper wrapper in the warm water, position it on the plate just so (making sure to leave a bit hanging off the edge to get a final grip when your roll is complete), pile on the vermicelli, pickled carrots/veg, mint, and the amazing grilled pork. Roll that thing up and dip into the puckery goodness that is nuoc cham. And even after 3 rolls, you won't feel stuffed to the gills. You're welcome. Also, be warned, the wait staff is just rude, take no offense. You're not there for the 5-star white glove service.

Appetizers came out and my friends order. After 20 minutes I canceled my order. It never came out. They never offered an apology for my order not arriving. The owner was helping us too. Bad customer service.

One of my atf places in the Bay Area! I loved it as a meat eater. I loved it even more as a newly vegan eater. Great decision for vegan option. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere here. Calm, relaxing, and service is great. Followed by amazing food. #ForeverACustomer

We used to be regulars at Le Cheval but hadn't been since before the pandemic. An out-of-town guest remembered how good it was from past dining so we went there recently. I checked on line to view their menu and got excited to see that they still had some of our favorites like dry fried crab and clay pot. When we ordered at the restaurant we were told the crab hasn't been available for a long time (every though it's crab season and lunar New Year). We were disappointed but at least the clay pot was still very good as were the Imperial rolls. As we ordered we were told that three other items we wanted to eat weren't available. Overall the meal was good but disappointing due to the on-line menu giving us expectations which weren't met.

My go to's every time. My family's Been coming here since 2007.

Le Cheval used to be one of our favorite places when we lived in Rockridge and we loved their restaurant in Walnut Creek so we were excited to be back at the Oakland establishment Saturday 1/7. We arrived at around 6:00 for dinner. The restaurant was about 1/2 full and we were seated right away. That's the best part of our time there. Two of the bottles of wine on their menu they don't carry anymore, which we didn't find out until we ordered one and we were told. We tried to order the other Savignon Blanc, she went and talked to the bar and came back to let us know they don't carry that one either. We wanted to order the food while we figured out the wine situation. Several of the items on their menu that we tried to order we were told they didn't make anymore, such as the salmon clay pot rice, the creamy carrot soup, and another salmon dish. We ended up ordering a glass of the Pinot Grigio. It was not good. Our appetizer came out fairly quickly. People were getting seated around us. Small groups, not anything large. We sipped our wine and chatted, but kept an eye on the clock because we needed to be at a concert at Yoshi's, which started at 7:30. By 6:50 we were definitely getting worried and had been told twice that our food was coming. The people around us, that had arrived after we had ordered were digging into their meals. Finally, at 7:00 we told her we needed to get our check for the wine and appetizer. She apologized and said the kitchen was backed up, which doesn't make sense as the people around was were enjoying their food. We left so disappointed in Le Cheval, it doesn't seem to be at all like we remember.

Never fails to be delicious. One of our go to places. Parking not bad, food dependable, good service.
Be the first to ReplyI came in for lunch.
Beautiful interior with plenty of seating and delightful paintings on the walls. The hostess was quick to seat us and get us menus and water. I got the cubed beef with rice and broccoli and it was very good. Appears to be great for small or large groups.

July 19th my friend & I returned to Le Cheval after many many years! I didn't need a menu because I knew I was going to order the clay pot! Boy was I surprised. My pot was full of rice, too much rice & somewhat dry. I remember my clay pot being juicy (maybe due to the delicious hoisin sauce), but it wasn't, however, the egg & spring rolls made for the perfect appetizer!

The waitresses and hosts are awful! There was no one to seat us for a long time. They got the order wrong because they didnt write it down and ended up waiting much longer for the food. Service is terrible.

The food never disappoints! This place is tried and true and can host a large group. My favorite is the salty prawns, curry, pork chops and garlic noodles.

I've been to this place throughout the years and it has most certainly changed. I usually get the grilled pork chops. They don't taste the same. The flavor is missing. Customer service can be rude when you ask for something.

Ordered the Vermicelli with pan-fried Chicken for my entree and shrimp spring rolls for an appetizer. Portions were extremely generous which I always love to see going to any restaurant. As for the flavor, both items were amazing! I'll definitely be coming back here.

They closed less than half the restaurant for a private function, so we had to do takeout. They also didn't have the bun with prawn kebab which was disappointing. But their bun with imperial roll was good and their spring roll was decent.

This is an Oakland staple for many years and yet the still treat their customers like trash. I set up a lunch business meeting today for 5, had a decent, nothing spectacular, lunch and a rich discussion amongst the other 4 black men. The bill came I immediately handed the lady my card and she told me without being asked by anyone - "only 1 card". I let it slide and told her again, I gave you my card, my card is fine. Minutes later she returned and I saw the amount for the first time, $113, no problem signed it and something told me to make sure the tip was included. It was, 20%. Again - 5 people at the table, tip was added automatically. I wasn't sure if their policy but I was fine with 20% because it is what I normally tip. Just being curious, I looked up their policy online once I got in the car. Of course, it said on groups of 7 or more, 18% will be added for gratuity. I hate blasting anyone over money, but I couldn't help but think it had a little to do with who was dining and not policy. Going forward, I'll adjust my visits to Le Cheval Oakland and find another venue that can appreciate my hard earned money, with respect. Proof is policy in the pic below. Maybe they should add more than 4 black men at any table will be accessed a 20% tip rate automatically.
Be the first to ReplyI remember when this place was at the top of their game
I remember when this place was at the top of their game years ago. Now, not so much... the food has become bland and the quality has diminished. The service was good and the decor is still the same. I just wish the food was better here.

This is one our favorite local restaurants to go to on a nice day in Oakland. Or for a evening dinner and even a Birthday celebration. It can be busy on weekends but they have a nice bar and outside seating area you can chill at while you wait for your table. We prefer outside seating but I've also dined inside. The service is great, food and drinks are great, vibe is great. The only thing I don't really like and it's just because it's such nice restaurant is the restrooms are horrible. I've been numerous times and it's just the one place they lack attention. Only reason I didn't give a 5 star but it hasn't stopped me from going.
Be the first to ReplyLe Cheval is a nice location for a sit-down Vietnamese meal
Le Cheval is a nice location for a sit-down Vietnamese meal with a large dining area filled with comfortable seating.I came here one Friday night to enjoy some claypot rice with a friend after having been to their Berkeley location multiple times in the past. I found the restaurant to be quite large with modern decor and an atmosphere a bit more upscale than the average Vietnamese restaurant. The service was friendly and prompt in getting us seated and taking our order. The claypot rice itself was quite delicious. The shrimp, beef, and vegetables were all tasty and the rice came out piping hot. The chicken was a little bit dry but overall it was a tasty pot of wonderfulness.

When I I ordered the clay pot rice with chicken and beef, as well as garlic noodles with veggies and spring rolls ย for my business, I did not expect to have the fabulous and ย emotionally delicious feast that arrived. Wow, simply wow !!!

Trying to support local, but LOOK AT THE BUG IN MY CUBE BEEF & BROCCOLI! Someone said it's a cockroach, I have no idea. Going to throw it all up.
Be the first to ReplyAnother one of the bay areas biggest gems.
Stopped in for a quick lunch not knowing what I wanted to eat so I stuck with the basics! Chicken Wings and Grilled Prawns. Have to be two of the best I've ever had in Oakland. Sorry the door didn't last long enough for a picture but that should tell you a lot. Great Service and Great Eats highly recommended!
