Cafe Procope is one of the iconic cafes in Par.
Very elegant, good quality and of course little bit pricey, but I would say well worth it. Staff were very nice. Politely answer questions in English. Definitely FIVE Stars.
Be the first to ReplyAlthough Le Procope has the best escargot I have ever had
Although Le Procope has the best escargot I have ever had in Paris, I took one star off for the service and attitude I received. I was seated downstairs and the tables were so close to each other that whenever anyone got up they likely knocked over something from their table or the table next to them. I did not get a friendly smile from anyone who worked here. I ordered a glass of wine, the escargot and the soup a l'oignon. Both of the dishes were amazing - some of the best I have ever had in Paris! It wasn't until I got the bill that I noticed that they charged me for the wrong wine. When I ordered I specifically pointed to the Côtes-du-Rhône, under the white wine section. When the wine arrived I didn't think much about it, but it was a red wine - I thought maybe I pointed to the wrong one? When I brought this up to the waiter he said the wine he gave me was still from the Côtes-du-Rhône region, and asked me of did you want a white wine? .....yes that's what I originally ordered. The sneakily charged me double for a more expensive wine and wouldn't do anything about the mistake they made. Overall, I would come back for the food but never for the service - the people working here really need to work on their customer service.

Very historic restaurant, oldest cafe in Paris, beautiful building and reasonable food.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my favorite French restaurants in all of
This is one of my favorite French restaurants in all of Paris. For being a fine dining café, their prices are reasonable (between 10-20 for appetizers and 20-50 for mains). The service was excellent, and everything we are and drank was delicious. The standout dish for me was their duck confit, and the red wine our table shared was perfect. Dinner here with a big group lasts at least two hours, so be prepared, but you'll enjoy every second. Book in advance.

We are tourists and we did not do our research before we walked in. Apparently, it is a popular restaurant with long history. Maybe because we are not used to the French style. They are really slow. First we waited 30 mins to get the special menu ( philosophy menu). Then, it took another 30 -40 mins to get the starter. Another 20 mins to get the main course. Another 30 - 40 mins to get the dessert. It seems every one waits long time, so I was waiting patiently at the beginning until I noticed the table came after us, get their main course before us and get their dessert much earlier than we did, even we finished our main course earlier. And they did not even clean our table before they serve the dessert to the other table. So we asked if can we have the dessert. The waiter gave us the menu. And we had to tell him we ordered the crème brûlée already. And he "surprisingly" asked "you want one or two". So it sounds like he forgot our order. So we asked if he forgot. He said no, the crème brûlée is ready. Then ~ 10 mins, we got the dessert. At the end, because we ordered from the philosophy menu which includes the main course and dessert, it should be a little cheaper order separately. But they charged us separately as they appears on the regular menu. Not much difference though. So we said just keep it, even they offer to gave us cash. To be honest, their good are good. We like the duck confit and the fish. But I don't think it is worth the wait. And I think it may be because our waiter has to wait more than 10 tables at the same time. And he himself knows about the long wait poor review as well. But they do not seem to care much.
Be the first to ReplyThe oldest cafe in Paris! Since 1686! So it's super old.
A family member recommended we come here and it was amazing. We loved it so much we came back another time for dinner. It has so much history! And many famous people have dined here from Napoleon to Benjamin Franklin. Napoleon's hat is framed on the wall upstairs. The last being our last night in Paris and was an excellent way to end our vacation. Make a reservation online on their website. Folks with no rezy were turned away and told that maaaybe they'd get a spot in an hour. You can imagine some people were upset and made it known. It looks so fancy in here and the prices were reasonable. The ambiance felt very classy and expensive. But again, reasonable prices which was shocking. Both times I got the risotto with scallops. Oh my gosh, absolutely delicious. The escargot was delicious as well and became my go-to appetizer anywhere we went. Drinks were delicious. It may be France but they make a darn good mojito. This was one of the highlights of our trip.
Be the first to ReplyLe Procope markets itself as the oldest cafe in Paris,
Le Procope markets itself as the oldest cafe in Paris, opening in 1686 (though not continous). It's the sort of thing a tourist has to go to, especially since it had on the menu two I've always wanted to try in Paris (to see if it is that much better): L'escargot (the snail) and Coq au Vin (Rooster in Wine). Both were good, though I couldn't say that it was that much better than elsewhere. It opens at noon every day of the week, and we got there about 45 minutes. It was already pretty busy inside, but we were seated right away without a reservation. I wouldn't consider it a fine dining place: the prices were very reasonable and it obviously wants to attract a wide clientele. For lunch, there is a fixed price menu where you can choose a combination of entree, dessert, and appetizer (2 of three would be 24,5€, all three would be 31,5€). My wife chose the 2 option, picking beef chuck with mashed potatoes and Floatting (not a misspelling) Island for dessert. Coq au Vin was 28,5€ and the count of 6 snails was 11,9€. A complementary side of black and green olives were given to us, with toothpicks. Complementary sliced bread was next, and it was OK..definitely easy to fill up on, if not careful. Next were the snails...and you can definitely hear it coming...as the butter sauce on the snails are boiling as it comes to the table. It's a great, great touch. I got to reaquaint myself in using the reverse tongs that is a requisite to hold those scalding shells, while you dig for the meat. The foot has already been removed for you, so once you remove the meat, it can be popped into your mouth. They were small, but tasted great....not chewy at all. The main courses came, and were served on the procope china. A carafe of tap water was provided when asked, so we could refill our glasses as needed. The chuck tasted a lot like a really good pot roast, braised long enough so the meat was tender and breakable using a fork. My coq au vin was served in a traditional metal casserole dish, where I could spoon out what I wanted onto my dish. The red wine sauce was good. It came with pearl onions, mushrooms, and baby potatoes. It was definitely a rooster since the two pieces of meat were the really large wing and part of the breast (bone-in). Dessert of floating island came quite a bit after we had finished our entree, and was something we never had before, but later I realized it's a classic French dessert, favored by Julia Child. It's basically a meringue, floating on custard, drizzled with candy bits and caramel. Definitely worth a bite or two (or more). Payment was made at the table, and it required a hand signature. The whole meal took about 90 minutes. Since we still had time, we were able to head upstairs to check out the famous Napoleon Hat, and see that there were other dining areas of the hotel. Glad we came.
Be the first to ReplyHigh end service in a popular place.
All the food was excellent. Only knock was the 50 cl carafe of red was bottom of bottle and not filtered so carafe had sediment on bottom so one of our party did not finish final glass as did not want to drink the sediment. The coq au vin was so good planned to see if they had a cookbook so could attempt to cook. Weakest dish was apple tart though looked beautiful which was a bit dry. Make sure to make reservation.
Be the first to ReplyThe oldest coffee in the world didn't disappoint.
The cappuccino was hot tasty. The beef was tender and perfect with the buttered mashed potatoes. Quick efficient service and fun to take in the history. Worth walking around and admiring the pictures and historical documents about the place. Sophisticated ambiance.

We have walked past this restaurant many times without ever trying it. In the past I've read reviews and decided not to try this amazing restaurant . Boy was I wrong ! We ended up going twice without reservations because it was that good . Both times we went was off hours and had a very late lunch . One of the days was Christmas Eve and that day we dressed up .The service was stellar. We enjoyed champagne and a few different glasses of yummy wine, one being a French Chablis that was outstanding. We both wondered around upstairs to see all the history of this old establishment. What an interesting place ! Overall , we both enjoyed our meals especially the salmon and the risotto !
Be the first to ReplyThis place is simply awful.
I didn't think the fact that Rousseau or Robespierre dined here would be the basis of a tourist trap, but that was my mistake. The food is bland--maybe the worst meal I've ever eaten in Paris--but what really distinguishes this restaurant is its abhorrent service. Expect to interact with your server about once an hour, but don't expect him to follow basic rules of hygiene.
Be the first to ReplyCame here with a group of 4 people for dinner.
Starters arrived quickly and were quite tasty (especially the egg with morels). However we then waited for about 45 minutes for the main course without any attempts by the staff to acknowledge/address this. When arrived, some dishes were just cold. Desserts were good, but not particularly impressive (e.g., panna cotta arrived in an awkward jar with large pieces of biscuit over the top - probably better suited for a breakfast as a diner). Obviously the historical aspect of this restaurant is hard to beat, but does not reach full potential as a far as food and service.
Be the first to ReplyClaimed to be the oldest cafe in Paris.
Definitely a historic place frequented by Voltaire and Ben Franklin. We had the set menu of Lyonnaise sausage with salad, duck liver pâté, braised beef, and dessert (chocolate mousse and coffee panna cotta). The other diners in our party ordered a la carte with sea bream with mussels and truffle risotto. Food was phenomenal, but there was some miscues at service where they completely forgot about the side dishes for the main course. Reservations are a must. Can't take a chance to walk in as it is a popular spot. Ambiance is great because of the historical significance.
Be the first to ReplyWe were recommended this restaurant and decided to try it.
Our first reservation was cancelled without any reason on the day of. So, down a star for that. The day of, we arrived about ten minutes early and were told to wait in side room before being ushered to a completely empty upstairs. The downstairs was fairly full ... The food was good - the veal was probably the best dish. The service was great - very attentive. No bread plates and bread arrived before drinks ... so that was a head scratcher and rare in Paris. You can pay using your phone so no awkwardness asking for the check. The wine list wasn't as expansive as I'd expect but was sufficient. Price points were reasonable given portions (the avocado/shrimp appetizer is mush larger than portions elsewhere). All in all, if you go - go for the history, and don't be set on your reservation ...

Just had or meal there a day after Christmas , historical and beautiful Resturante , decent ambience but under the par food for a French Restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyOldest restaurant in Paris, great service and food.
Interior design is reminiscent of 18th century bourgeois house, you feel like Voltaire or Jean JacquesRousseau are ready to pop out anytime in any room.Hignly recommanded, Veal Kidneys are my fave dish, so are the Beef cheeks...
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful restaurant with polite staff and delicious food.
The interior is so clean and pretty, just like the menu. When we ordered wine they made sure to have us taste it first before we drank it (they actually care!) so that was really nice. As for the food, I ordered the veal stew and it was so creamy and delicious! However stay away from the rice (I didn't take off stars for this because I felt everything else compensated for it) as it is sort of hard and I felt it was undercooked. Our family can't speak French and I'm really happy with their English! If they have room you won't need a reservation, especially since they have a large upstairs and downstairs, just in case anybody wanted to know.It might be a little pricey compared to its neighbors, but trust me, it's worth it!
Be the first to ReplyOur most disappointing meal in Paris.
We made dinner reservations when we visited in October, with high expectations due to the glowing reviews, and the fact that this is one of Paris' oldest restaurants. Somehow many things went wrong. This supposedly high end restaurant was so packed it sounded like a dim sum place. Then our meals came. The steak which was the special of the day was bland and chewy. The tartare was also the most underwhelming I've had in Paris. Sole meuniere was okay. The highlight was the dessert and the cocktails.

Ironically we opted to dine here when walking down their alley. I had no idea it was a famous restaurant where many notables have dined. I chose it because they had a prix fix lunch at $20euro last March that looked fantastic. There were only 3 tables in the alley so I assumed it was an unassuming restaurant... my favorite kind of place. Ironically we ordered then batter half went to restroom inside and came back out saying... "it's a fancy restaurant inside! Presidents and poets have dined here!" I wasn't sure if this was good or not... I'm all about the food and the service. Suffice it to say it exceeded expectations. We feasted on trout almondine/meunière. Husband from New Orleans says to the waiter... that's usually 2 separate dishes. He said yes we like to combine the two... fantastic idea! It was a whole trout with head on and it was fantastic. We also tried their pate which was the best of all the ones we tried in Paris. We also tried the appetizer of artichoke mousse which delicious and refined. If we hadn't been staying so far away we would have gone back for our next meal. Will definitely return when I'm next in Paris.
Be the first to ReplyOnly reading a bit about the history of this place on Yelp
Only reading a bit about the history of this place on Yelp after eating here. The ambiance and decor is the only highlight of this place to be honest. The food was super mediocre, we ordered butcher's cut, veal stew, duck terriane, and a shrimp tartare. The shrimp tartare is closer to a shrimp salad, the duck terriane was alright, steak was a bit tough/over cooked, and veal stew tasted like they poured gravy onto a piece of overcooked beef. Everything was edible, but nothing stood out and for the price that you pay here, well, let's just say just take your money else where.

I've eaten here before with a chicken that was literally raw in the middle. I was convinced to return by a good friend. I made a reservation for seven women I made a reservation in French which is my native tongue. I spoke to a man who insured me that my reservation was taken and even repeated my time and date- which was the same night! I arrived with my guests and he proceeded to tell me that he never spoke with me - I recognize his voice and he turned us away. By the way I had a prominent writer, social media rep, and other professional women in our group. He made the error and was angry at us which was unacceptable. I am a luxury travel agent and used to recommend them all the time simply because of the history of the place but now I'm telling everyone to stay away.

It would be best to list the errors of my family's experience at Le Procope, none. Service, Food, Decor and Friendliness were all exceptional. Being the oldest continuously operated restaurant in Paris I wasn't sure of what to expect, arrogance or experience. We are happy to be a part of history.
Be the first to ReplyIn Paris, where great dining experiences abound, I am
In Paris, where great dining experiences abound, I am surprised by all the favorable reviews. Our experience was painful and so dissatisfying. Came in early, ( we Americans do eat early!). Clearly a tourist trap trap with a long history. I ordered the 3 course menu with the leeks as in cream sauce as an app, the trout as the main and dessert. Hubs had the same but no dessert. Service was beyond slow and spotty. Female server acted exasperated at every turn. It never was clear who was responsible for what. Leeks were tasty but clearly had just come out of Avery cold frig; trout was room temp and dessert..who knows...never happened and voila there came the check. It just felt like I was witnessing a hot mess of disorganization and rudeness. A really lousy experience all around is a city known for great food and service.
Be the first to ReplyIt has a rich history and great setting for friends to come
It has a rich history and great setting for friends to come out and enjoy! The food however was not as I expected. I ordered a starter, French onion soup, it came out way too cheesy and the onion taste did not sit well. My main dish was a butcher cut steak that looked absolutely delicious, it had a very nice looking style and looked like it was prepared well until... I took the bite. Naturally it is suppose to be undercooked as for the tradition. Mine however was completely raw. It took me nearly 3 minutes to finish a bite and the color was off. I was honestly displeased and didn't feel so well. They did have great bread, and their mashed potatoes were good. Overall it is still a fun experience to see what kind of history they have here.
