Came here on a Sunday night with a party of 4.
Place had a great atmosphere and cozy vibes. They had live music, a pianist and trumpet player- fantastic. The wait staff were very friendly and answered any questions we had. Food was excellent and was served fairly quickly. Good for couples and families.
Be the first to ReplyI came here for dinner on a Friday night.
I think the live music started around 8 or 8:30 and was a nice accompaniment to the meal. We ordered a la carte since the pre fix menu didn't seem worth it. For appetizer, we tried the baked seafood crepe which was rich and creamy. I got coq au vin for my entree which was delicious. The meat flaked off the bone and the sauce paired perfectly. Service was also decent. Would definitely come here again.

I've been to Le Rivage 3 times so far and it gets better every time. The restaurant is very cool aesthetically, feels like a funky little Paris restaurant. Usually live jazz music. The food is outstanding, a fairly small menu but fantasic choices. I had the escargot for my appetizer and the Sole for my entree. I was very happy and so were my guest. I highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, excellent service, some limitations to the menu.
We enjoyed the live music. We would recommend it and will return

It doesn't look like much on the outside, but when you walk in it looks AMAZING! Their famous French onion soup was great and their lamb chop and filet mignon were some of the best meats I've ever had! Their French onion burger was also amazing! We highly recommend you coming here when you are hungry or when you want to try something new! Umai!

The food is good but OVERPRICED compared to other similar French bistros in NYC, everything here is about $7-$10 too much. The atmosphere is a bit dated (what are those terrible paint-by-numbers art work on the walls?) and the dining guests are on average 65+. When these people die or are too old to get around who will take their place? I don't know what the solution is but I'd start by changing that awful art, maybe hire a DJ? It's fine but it's not fun. Spring is coming and this place needs to do some desperate Spring Cleaning all the way around!

I came back here hoping to positively update my review, but unfortunately the only thing that changed were the prices - I am well aware that food prices have increased, but the small portion sizes, relatively expensive (adjusted for inflation) prices and most importantly, being one of only 3 tables dining during rush hour, takes away even further from the ambiance that was likely once charming , back in the 1980's or maybe even the 70's

Are you even a good tourist, if you haven't been to Restaurant Row? But it's also for us New Yorkers. Le Rivage has one of my favorite burgers. The French Onion Soup Burger is all that. Super delish. The restaurant decor could use an upgrade, but the service is good.
Be the first to ReplyOne star is too high.
Service was ok, ambiance cute, food gross. My cats eat better.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful pretheater pre fixe menu.
Good choices for all so do enjoy!!! We tried escargot, seafood crepe, absinthe, cider, steak frites, mussels, crème brûlée, peach Melba. All tasty!!
Be the first to ReplyWhen I went, there was a prix fixe menu.
Which was fine, I ordered my appetizer, main, and dessert for $60. The service was excellent and my waiter was very attentive and friendly. I got a cocktail that was good as well. Everything came out very quickly. Overall the food was disappointing. I just felt that there wasn't anything special or especially good tasting, especially for the price.

Service was fast and friendly for a pre-theater meal, but the food was disappointing. The onion soup and baked mussel appetizers were both good, if not particularly inspired. The beef bourguignon was greasy and under-seasoned. The coq au vin was fine, but nothing to write home about. The peach melba dessert involved a rock-hard and flavorless peach. The bread pudding resembled a slice of sandwich bread smothered in creme anglaise with no texture to it at all.
Be the first to ReplyThe food at Le Rivage never disappoints.
When ordering from the Prix fixe menu I always know that I will receive high quality food for a fair price. Each dish is extremely flavorful and together with the beautiful ambience, dinner here is always extremely pleasant.
Be the first to ReplyIts really old school french.
If you like that you will love it here. we sure did. Try the duck it was great.
Be the first to ReplyNot the best food.
They do have an interesting selection of wines for a good price. If you are looking for a last minute place to eat with a large group before heading to a broadway show, this place may be for you!

With an extensive menu of classics, Le Rivage offers what many will be looking for at a French pre-theater restaurant: Coq au Vin, escargot, frogs legs, beef bourguignon, ratatouille. We found the food to be tasty, Three stars due to the slightly chilly overall atmosphere, very tight tables, efficient but visibly pressured wait staff - this isn't a relaxing meal before your show, it's a French food assembly line. Plates were served too hot to touch - not the food, the plates - mandatory $60pp fixed price with no option for a la carte before 7:30pm. As lifelong New Yorkers we won't be going back, but located in the heart of the district, Le Rivage is fine for theater-goers willing to drop $80 for a French meal.

Based on many reviews, this restaurant is targeting for pre-theater crowd so we chose to come here after 8. It was practically empty, which suits us fine especially during this COVID time. This restaurant is very much like a french bistro than a fancy restaurant. It is quite charming. The staff were quite friendly and very attentive, I guess another benefit of less crowd. There was even someone playing piano during our dinner. We ordered French onion soup (excellent), escargots (good), stream mussels (good), pan seared trout (good), and creme brulee (excellent). This is definitely a place deserve to be noticed.
Be the first to ReplyFirst, it is clear that La Rivage has experience herding
First, it is clear that La Rivage has experience herding the pre-theater crowd in and out. We arrived around 5:15pm, and the restaurant was fairly crowded. Also, the staff were very good about asking about showtimes and managing the logistics of a well-timed departure.Based on the crowd, I'm guessing many customers have faith in their ability to do this. The menu is limited to a three-course fixed-price menu during the pre- and post-theater rushes. I imagine in the interest of keeping the machinery running. There is a nice variety of choices and surcharges for those higher-valued entrées such as lamb chops or duck (I think). We had paté de campagne and a green salad for the starter. Steak frites and coq au vin for the main course. For dessert it was sorbet and a fruit plate. All servings were of a nice size and I thought the fruit was particularly fresh. Everything else was overall fine. I did keep revisiting the coq au vin in my mind and the assembly line operation though. I wondered how long the coq au vin had been left in the oven for a slow cook. The vegetables and the chicken were just not as tender as I'm accustomed, so that was the only shortcoming I could identify.Service was fine with bread refilled and water glasses frequently refilled. Also, the manager made several check-ins. She is delightfully charming and added to the existing ambiance of a family-owned French restaurant. In addition to the three-course menu, we had three glasses of wine. Total price with 20% tip was $207. The wines were ok, but I think the quality/price equation was slightly better after a recent visit to Le Privé (a little further over in Hell's Kitchen).I think the value is OK, but we aren't excited for a revisit. However, obviously, this is only my opinion. The restaurant seems to do a really good business, so we are more in the minority on this one, I think. If you want to make sure you make your Broadway show on time and looking for a fully belly, I think this is a safe dinner choice and would be much better than lots of the Times Square tourist traps.
