Great meal and servíce
Food and service were both exemplary. The appetizers and main course were delicious. Staff helped us celebrate my son’s birthday. Will return next visit

We enjoyed our dinner (we both ordered steak frites). . They forgot to add the beurre rouge sauce.
Be the first to ReplyGood, but Hit & Miss
We were looking for a fine dining experience in Carmel and chose this one for one of our nights. We got a table outside with heaters. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Our starter was excellent, the onion and goat cheese tart and house cured olives. Next course was the soup, my husband's onion soup was pretty good. My mushroom soup was lacking both body and flavor. I was able to improve it a bit with butter from the table and a splash of red wine from my glass. It could use some cream or bacon or both, and some herbs of some kind. I had Beef Wellington, which was excellent, my husband had the fresh fish, which was not. It was over cooked and contained a lot of dark meat. The steamed veggies were also overdone. Overall, it was a nice meal, but with a little bit more attention in the kitchen could be brilliant.

What an exceptional evening we had at L'Escargot in Carmel. We planned a celebratory dinner and could not have a better meal and experience. When making the reservation I mention my dietary restrictions and the chef could not have been more helpful; I knew I'd be in good hands and L'Escargot did not disappoint. The appetizers were a tasty start to the evening. They were perfectly prepared and seasoned: frog legs, escargot, wild mushroom soup, mussels and steak frites, served with excellent artisan bread to sop up the flavorful sauces that were lick the plate delicious. Entrees were the Petrale sole prepared perfectly for my dietary needs, the rack of lamb with a delicious herb crust, perfectly seared scallops over flavorful asparagus risotto and duckling prepared two ways that was also perfectly prepared and seasoned. Previous reviews mentioned the wine list was expensive, and while the prices were high it offered us a good selection and the sommelier was point on with his wine recommendation. As an aside, the restaurant also offers the option of bringing your own wine for a corkage fee that is comparable to other fine restaurants in the area. Hats off to the chef and his kitchen staff for our excellent dinner and to the friendly, professional service that set the tone for the night. We will definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyFine Dining Seems To Be In Trouble
L'Escargot used to be a destination for us but this time it fell way short. A mediocre wine list with astronomical prices put the brakes on us immediately. Then we sat and sat and sat while the waitress walked right by us without even a glance. She was a problem. It is clear that another line of work would be recommended as three of the six tables in the room became vocally frustrated with her as the night went on. We were rushed once she engaged us and more or less forced to abandon our last glass of Champagne as they made it very uncomfortable for us to linger. The food was good, in fact very good but not inspired and or course very expensive....another hint that maybe they just don't care anymore. Have restaurants with cost and staff problems just given up? The menu and wine list printed crookedly across cheap wrinkled paper would apparently say yes. Either shame on the chef owner or my sympathies for your situation.

L'escargot is famous for its name but the food and service were first rate. The experience serving staff is helpful but not intrusive.

We were there to celebrate our anniversary and had great expectations. We were seated in a smaller room with 5 tables, each set up for two. The spacing seemed good. Things were looking good. First of all, the service was very slow. The escargot and onion soup came out in a reasonable amount of time. The escargot didn’t have enough garlic, and the French onion soup was disappointing. There was cheese, although not a lot, and the onion was cut in larger pieces than expected. Then we had to wait quite awhile for our entrees. The rack of lamb was okay, but the preparation was not described and my husband didn’t ask. Not his favorite. One of the specials was beef Wellington, which I ordered. It was a beautiful presentation, but quite salty and the filet mignon was just okay. We had to wait quite awhile for dessert, too. The apple tart was a flat crust barely 3” across, with very few, very thinly sliced apples on it. It came with a tiny scoop of ice cream and caramel sauce. This was tasty, but so tiny. Unfortunately, it seems our waiter had most of his tables in the larger room, so we hardly saw him. At the end, we had to flag down one of the other waitstaff to get the check. It was not our best dining experience, and we will not be returning. I don’t like writing a negative review, but this visit was such a disappointment for us.

Everything was outstanding. The Beef Wellington was perfect. The Rack of Lamb was excellent. Paired perfectly with the Ghost Block Zinfandel. Service by Freddie was exceedingly well done, attentive but never intrusive.

Traditional French cuisine at the oldest restaurant in Carmel by the Sea. I'd never heard of this restaurant when visiting Carmel over the years until some acquaintances mentioned it who live close to the restaurant. If you like traditional French food, try it out - the service was wonderful!

This place reminds me of elegance in the 70s. It’s timeless and perfect. Chef is a talent and the patio for a “smart” lunch is a dream.

This French country style restaurant offers excellent food and very good service. We dine here every time when visiting Carmel and have never been disappointed.

We had an exquisite meal at L’Escargot!
If you love French country style dishes, you must get a table. The duck, the pasta, the sand dabs, even the bread, all delicious. An excellent, slightly eclectic wine list. Super friendly waitstaff.
Do not pass this up!
Delicious french meal but pricy
It was our first time dining at L'escargot. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered classic escargot, veal sweetbeard, duckling two way, and scallop ristto. All dishes were delicious. The service were excellent. I think the price was very high. It might be the standard in Carmel by the sea.

My husband & I were celebrating our anniversary in Carmel & decided to dine at Le Escargot. It was stupendous! We had excellent service with Freddy, who very obviously loves where he works & what he does. We sat outside under heat lamps. The restaurant is just a few blocks out of the main shopping area, a quiet & beautiful evening. The menu + specials were so yummy sounding it was hard to decide. Our ultimate selections, their classic duck & rack of lamb were fantastic, along with a special veal sweetbread appetizer & of course escargot! Outside is dog friendly. Our new favorite Carmel restaurant!

If in Carmel, you should dine here. Lovely setting. Fantastic and knowledgeable waitperson. The cocktails were perfect. The wild mushroom soup of the day wonderful. My duck two ways just amazing as was my companion’s coq Au vin and chicken Francais. Great wine selection. A perfect evening. As good as it gets.
Be the first to ReplyThere is a reason it has been cooking since about 1955.
This is very much a Parisian bistro that takes full advantage of the quality ingredients in this part of California. Given its name, it serves escargot served in garlic butter either in the shell or in mushroom caps. Both ways are good and prepared classically but I prefer the mushroom caps. (The London Soho restaurant of the same name is reputed to have grown snails in its basement when WW II cut off the supply from France; this establishment denies ever growing snails in its basement.) The salads take advantage of being in the middle of America’s salad bowl and can always be relied upon. Friends advise that their lamb is excellent, but I cannot confirm since I just don’t enjoy lamb. Given that I have always enjoyed what I have had here, I have no doubt my friends are correct. This visit I enjoyed their pork loin medallions, perfectly cooked in a delicious mushroom sauce with veggies. Slurped a glass of the house Sauvignon Blanc. They have a well curated wine list with good selections at various price points. You can depend on a decent wine at the lower prices.
Be the first to ReplyDown-home French
L'Escargot is a small restaurant that tends toward traditional French cuisine. They have ample outdoor seating which is pleasant. The inside of the restaurant is quite small - when full it can be downright cramped. The restaurant itself is not particularly charming nor romantic - its just small but clean and well organized. Not being a tourist destination, L'Escargot maintains a relaxing 'local' ambiance where one can enjoy good company and good food. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful - there's no hint of pretentiousness. The menu is relatively seasonal and the chef has a limited variety that'd appeal to most people. The dishes are well prepared with quality ingredients. The kitchen is more down-home French cooking rather than haute-cuisine. If you're looking for a culinary adventure, this is not the restaurant. If you're looking a for good meal with friends or family, you'll enjoy your visit.
Be the first to ReplyImpeccable service, but . . .
Misrepresents pork loin as "pork medallions" (medallions are tenderloin, not loin) and the Creme Brûleé bears no relationship to the classic dish. Very disappointing

We had a birthday celebration at L’escargot, complete with candles to blow out and champagne. The fare was delicious, but the desserts were perfection.
