Glad I found this place since there doesn't seem to be many
Glad I found this place since there doesn't seem to be many great French restaurants in Orange County. Atmosphere is warm and inviting. Has an Old World Parisian feel to it with wood paneling and antique touches. We made a reservation and were seated immediately. The servers were attentive and friendly without being overbearing. For appetizer, we had the shrimp cocktail and french onion soup which were excellent. Shrimp are enormous and cocktail sauce had some grated horseradish on top in case you wanted to up the spice level. I also like that they offer petite plates to accommodate smaller appetites or sharing. We got the beef bourguignon petite plate and volcano lamb shank entree. Very pleased with both dishes and especially enjoyed the demi-glaze on the shank which I sopped up with some warm toasty rolls. We skipped dessert because we were full already but will definitely try them next time!

Food. Service. Ambiance. Excellent all around.Intimate. Romantic even, says my wife. Fresh flowers on the table. We each had a Starter (Mushroom Farci, Shrimp Cocktail) and then a Petite Plate (Beef Bourguignon, Filet Mignon) and it was the perfect amount of food. I will add that my filet was not hot. Tasty and tender, but lukewarm at best; cold in places. My guess is that the bernaise is refrigerated and quickly cooled the poor little petite filet. I asked for it on the side, but it came on the steak.)The service was timely however. The owner even came to our table to help with wine selection and made a nice recommendation.Great coffee too! Asked what it was but waitress had no information to share. If you're looking for something different and delicious without breaking the bank, go here.

"We don't know why L'Hirondelle isn't on our favourite list" other than we tend to hug the coast for some unqualified reason.Delicious non standard dishes, the French have had it nailed for decades, thankfully L'Hirondelle is helping to maintain the heritage of French cuisine in California. My friend said, "try the house red ($9.50) you'll be surprised", I was!Petite/small dishes menu that almost mirrors the main course menu which will be perfect on many occasions. From the main menu our party enjoyed. Escargot in garlic butter, French onion soup, stuffed farci mushrooms, rack of lamb, roast duck, beef Bourguignon, and Shrimp Maison, all were excellent (loved my lamb!). Efficient and friendly service abounds with the family owner clearly keeping an eye on operations. The restaurant located in an historic listed building with beams and fire place opposite the famous Mission was there when we arrived in 1981 hopefully the next generation will maintain the delicious standards.

We went on a Friday evening Food: delicious; we had the peppered filet mignon (med rare) and house salad (not pictured) & volcano lamb shank and clam chowder (not pictured). FYI: if you're not a fan of dill, make sure to say no dill on the house salad. - it was delicious but I preferred no peppered sauce on my steak but one of the best steak I ever had- the lamb was cooked to perfection- both entrees came with sidesDrink: house red wine paired well with my steak Service: goodParking: behind the restaurant around the corner otherwise street parking

Amazing place! Quaint and warm as soon as you walk through the door. I had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection. Every course was better than the first- highly recommended.

Fantastic! I have been here a few times now and each time it has been wonderful. Sunday brunch on the quaint patio did not disappoint. The eggs Benedict was absolute perfection and the staff was very attentive. Yesterday I had the salmon sandwich with melted Brie red onions and hollandaise sauce. It was absolutely delicious. We finished with coffee and the flourless chocolate torte which was amazing. This is my parents favorite place in town and I can certainly see why!

We have been coming here for 18 years and probably at least once a month. We love the atmosphere, their delicious and great quality food and superb service. Everyone goes above and beyond to accommodate you in every possible way. Last Friday we brought a large group of our friends here and everyone loved the place and the delicious food and excellent service.Thank you all for keeping your guests always happy.

we love this restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyI attended a birthday luncheon here yesterday.
To be honest, I haven't been here for over 20 years and I don't know why I stopped coming? The service was fantastic; they attended to every need. The food was pleasantly prepared and quite yummy. I had the Atlantic salmon sandwich on a fresh baguette with melted brie cheese, red onions, capers, fresh dill, topped with a delicious hollandaise sauce; it was to die for! The birthday girl had the Atlantic salmon entrée. The Ambiance is a bit outdated and worn in some areas hence; 4 stars. We had ten entrées and it was too much for me to take pictures of all of them but everybody 'raved' about their dining experience. I will DEFINITELY not wait to come back with my husband.
Be the first to ReplyIt has been far too long since we were last here.
We will never make that mistake again! We had a fantastic meal, with a terrific staff. I highly recommend it for lunch or dinner. You can't go wrong in San Juan Capistrano with this choice.

The petite plates were the perfect size. And oh my - the French onion soup! Come hungry. Take time to enjoy the food.

The best hidden secret in San Juan Capistrano! The ambiance is amazing for a date night or Sunday brunch in the patio. The food is delicious. I absolutely love the Salmon salad! The escargot is the beat I've had, the mushroom escargot is just as good! The kids get the in-house made chicken tenders and fries. Our go-to spot!!
Be the first to ReplyHad brunch here on a Sunday, and had a great time.
The restaurant was really quiet and nice to have a conversation. I had the smoked salmon eggs Benedict and really enjoyed it. Definitely will be returning in the future.

Had a delicious dinner there on Friday, May 13th for my son's birthday. Everything was delicious. We had 6 in the party and all raved about the food. A word to the wise.....they only take reservations on the hour and parking is right behind the restaurant in a cordoned off area.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful patio setting.
Food is good but pricey. Portions are not that generous. Service has been average to above average. I was very annoyed, however, when I looked up their "house wine" and saw that it is essentially a bottle I can buy for five dollars but they they sell for $35 or something. I would expect more from an upscale place. At least warn the customer so he can adjust the order accordingly (I would have ordered something else and I guess more expensive-an $8 bottle for $50?). For a place that is kind of pretentious, the wine was a disappointment. Probably won't be back because the value isn't really there.
Be the first to ReplyI never have rated 5 stars, but this is one I hope too.
Been here 6-7 times in the past 6 years. We live in Aliso Viejo and come here when we get the French itch. I am from Canada, and this place is legit. My go to dish is the Dover Sole, but everything is good. Never been for dinner because don't eat supper.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is well prepared, fresh and is delicious.
The serving staff are courteous, caring and polite. So nice to go there with family.

My wife and I try to visit L'Hirondelle whenever we visit SJC from San Diego. Not only is it across the street from the Mission Basilica but it has an excellent, distinctive and tasty menu, superb customer service, and a charming ambience. Strongly recommended.

Found this gem by making a concerted effort to find and try French restaurants in South Orange County. We found one on Balboa island and then came across this one. Nestled near Mission San Juan Capistrano. The L'Hirondelle means The Swallow (as in the birds that San Juan Capistrano is known for).Made a reservation for our wedding anniversary. This establishment is family owned and I could tell by the conversations among other patrons that this place has a large number of regulars - people who come here often. That's a good sign. The food- French Onion soup was superb -easily the best I've ever had. Chicken Tarragon - nailed it. Vegetables were perfect. The Dijon sauce made this dish special. The Dijon was subtly applied and not to sharp or tart. Just perfect. Service was superb. The owner was charming and cordial and our servers were attentive but not intrusive. Could not have been a better experience. Will definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a real charmer.
Very interesting menu and it's all good! I love the sausage options and the egg dishes are wonderful. Burgers are juicy and delicious. You can't go wrong and a great place for brunch. Good parking and one of the loveliest patios anywhere. Service is prompt and friendly.
Be the first to ReplyL'Hirondelle was special at one time.
As long time residents we knew the original owners. I tried to engage the owner to ask her about business and she was rude and dismissive. Unfortunately, her attitude, and the lack of quality for Brunch, turned us off.
Be the first to ReplyTheir food was so delicious.
There were four in our party and we each ordered a different item from the menu. The atmosphere is so romantic and cozy. Service was excellent and the staff are very friendly and attentive. The owner Ali attends to everyone personality and it is obvious that customers come back not just for the food but the great service as well. We will definitely come back again. Don't forget to try their crème brûlée.
