Absolutely amazing food
Creative and delicious food! They say I have to type at least 100 characters so I am still typing trying to get to the 100. Made it!
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely the best in Richmond
Hands down the best drink and food in Richmond. Also best service and experience. Whether you’re a French food fan or not everything is made to perfection. There’s filet mignon that is the best.
Be the first to ReplyGive it a try but start early making reservations!
One of best meals I have had in a long time! Everything is thought out perfectly. The food is a blend of traditional and innovative. I would hesitate to go with "picky" eater! Service is impeccable. Very difficult to get reservation as it is small and intimate. But, It is worth continuing trying to get the reservation It is pricey but so worth it. I had been told it was "elegant and fancy" and it is anything but! It is small and cluby!
Be the first to ReplyAtmospheric. Big on Attitude. Dark. Edgy. Love it or Hate it.
DARK! Think walking into a movie theatre just as the lights go down, from bright summer day outside at noon. No windows. Black drapes inside the door. Cave-like. The whole place is edgy, quirky, eccentric - choose your own adjective. From music selection to art. Could be a speakeasy. On a corner in a residential neighborhood, impossible to be believe that the unmarked dark door belongs to a restaurant. A place for romantic trysts. These aspects are more memorable than the food, which is nonetheless very good. Everything we had was very good, including a special drink (Homage to Barbie) and desserts (Chocolate Mort). Likely the most innovative food in Richmond, which is not a gastronomic playground. To my taste, a few too many ingredients and trying too hard - some successful, some less so. Trying very hard to mix haute French cuisine with down-home hillbilly fare, hence L’Opossum. Moderate value. $350 for 4 people. Quirkiness extended to our waitress, who was abrupt, cold, an off-putting, but nonetheless very knowledgeable about the food and all of its varied - and quirky - ingredients. Had to ask for bread. Had to ask for salt and pepper. Was told repeatedly in a dismissive way that “We prefer that you order everything at once,” when we asked to order apps while we considered the unusual menu. Not allowed apparently. The service lapses and attitude started before we arrived. Of course, we had to confirm our reservation by text that morning, which we did. But then we got a call (two calls actually, within 30 seconds of each other) at 6:18pm (our reservation time was 6:15pm). The caller identified the restaurant and asked where we were. I said that we were on our way right then. That wasn’t good enough. The caller said: “NO, WHERE ARE YOU?” I had to give her my coordinates (Belvidere and Spring Streets , 2 blocks away). She reckoned that that might be ok, just barely. We walked in 2 minutes later, and 6:20pm. Summary: Atmosphere - 100%. Eccentricity - 100%. Food - 80%. Service - 40%. Value - 75%.
Be the first to ReplyIt's not roadkill, it's great!
Forget the name. Forget the unprepossessing exterior. We had a 5 pm reservation (opening time) and at least four other couples were waiting outside. Inside, the definition of "funky" decor. Then, the food! Basically, out of this world flavors and presentation. Arctic char was the best ever. The crab cakes perfect. A Faberge egg as appetizer. A dip which had to be devoured. La Petit Mort chocolate cake devine. The best bread pudding we ever had. So expensive, but who cares? Make the reservation!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service, excellent food
Finally visited L'Opposum for a birthday celebration with six dear friends of 40 years. A VCU art school grad, I had to see this restaurant in a neighborhood that, in my VCU days, was where the poorest students lived off campus, with the locals, in ramshackle conditions without central heat. Getting a reservation took multiple attempts over multiple weeks. On the plus side, the service was stellar, as was the food, for the most part. (One sauce garnishing one dish was quite bitter; not in a palatable way.) The interior design is simply funky, by intent. Perfect. On the less wondrous side, two things. It's a terribly noisy dining experience; we had trouble hearing those of the group seated two people away. It's a trend in restaurants, mistaking noise for "exciting," but the experience would be a lot more pleasant if there were more sound-absorptive materials in the space. So, this is NOT the place for a romantic cooing dinner with the one you love, or for catching up with friends you haven't seen for a while. Also, we would have had 2 more guests -- and, based on the corner table we had, I'm sure we could have fit -- but 6 was the largest group they would seat (and without realizing it, we had separately asked 3 times).
Be the first to ReplyGood eclectic restaurant for special occasions.
Excellent restaurant; however, very Over Rated. No need to wait 3-4 weeks to dine at this restaurant when there are many comparable choices in Richmond. Don’t get me wrong…food is really good; however, eclectic. Many people rave about this restaurant. Good for very special occasions.

Horrible service! Very rude manager!!! There are so many great restaurants in Richmond do not waste your time here.
Be the first to ReplyVisiting or local- a must for excellent, inventive food.
Four times in eight months and nary a disappointment. It is not a Michelin star wannabee. MUCH better! Most inventive and successful food combinations. Fois gras in sauces to die for. Yummy desserts. Death by chocolate is flambeed at your table. Menu changes just enough to make each trip an adventure. Atmosphere is an upscale dive. Love it. Service is great and professional. We were probably the oldest people there by about 30 years. Overall, if you mixed the Tour d'Argent with the very first Hard Rock you'd might get the vibe. But it is better than either. Prices are excellent for the wonderful food you get. Would be three times as much in NY and four in London.
Be the first to Replygood food, but not a great experience
The food and drinks were good. BUT We came on our wedding anniversary from out of town. We mentioned it was our anniversary when making the reservation, when we arrived to the hostess, and to our waiter. We were very dressed up in fancy special occasion clothes. We were sat at the worst table (by the kitchen door and the bar, I had waiters knocking into my chair all night). No one congratulated us on our anniversary (even when we directly mentioned it), and we didn't get a congratulations note on the two desserts we ordered and paid for, no complimentary sparking wine, no complimentary desserts, no sort of acknowledgement whatsoever. The food and mixed cocktails were good, but I would not go here expecting that your special occasion would be honored. It put a damper on our anniversary meal. I will not return and will not recommend it to others for a special event.

Incredible service and food. Our orders came out within 10 minutes at the latest, and they were some of the most incredible meals I've had since I tried Canadian McDonalds. Unfortunately, the restaurant has a very silly name so I cannot, in good conscious, recommend you go anywhere near this establishment.

Great food, ambience (dark lighting with cool accents and decorations), kind staff, and good service. Would visit again
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed.
This was recommended the last time we were in town, but we couldn't get in. So when we knew we were traveling back to Richmond, we got reservations well in advance. Which then surprised us when they sat us at the bar. We thought maybe the booths were reserved for more than 2, but other couples were later seated in booths. And I made the mistake of making my dinner selection early based on an online menu, only to have a totally different menu that evening. The pear cocktail was excellent, but that turned out to be the only real highlight of the evening for me.
Be the first to ReplyYummy French Cuisine
Excellent French cuisine. Attentive service. Food prepared well. No complaints. Would recommend and would go return again.

Amazing start to finish Spot on service Pan seared foie gras from Hudson valley NY Creamy lobster mac infused with truffle Braised cabbage with firm lentil in garlicky brodo No room for dessert but foie gras bread pudding on my list for next time
Be the first to ReplyCanceled my reservation
Unbelievable. Reserved a couple months ago and confirmed yesterday, they call to cancel today saying a power outage messed up their reservation system. So I guess someone else has my seat tomorrow? What a joke. Been there many times. Won’t be back.
Be the first to ReplyMean spirited place
Don't know about the food as had covid and had to cancel.... they still charged us...... seems really mean and penny pinching. Really Best avoided.
Be the first to ReplyUnique Menu and Stella Service
We celebrated my birthday at L'Opossum May 18th and this restaurant never fails to please! My husband and I both enjoyed the grilled Caesar salad - a house classic. My husband's quail, with risotto, sausage and pears was delicious! I ordered two appetizers - the Oysters Rockefeller were outstanding! The beef tenderloin was a bit tougher than I would have expected from L'Opossum, hence the 4-star rating. It could have been an "off day" for the meat, but I expect a bit more from L'Opossum. Our dinner was still extremely enjoyable, and we LOVE sitting at the bar. The staff and bartender are so engaging - it's a wonderful and unique dining experience!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Dinner from food to ambiance and music. It did not disappoint
We were told about this restaurant and so glad we got a reservation several weeks before our trip. The restaurant is rather small but perfect for this "special" dining. Our server made a great recommendation on food choices/options for us and wine to accompany. They had an interesting wine list that was reasonably priced. Would definitely go back here.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed
My son gave us a gift card so we went.
We had 5 o’clock reservation and we got there 4:55 and they had us wait outside until 5 o’clock in the cold along with 2 other couples .
We order appetizer and they were ok nothing special for the prize . My husband order crab cakes they were ok. I order lamb shank it was the hind shank it looked good. But it was so stringing and it taste old. It got inside my teeth and they did not even had tooth pick .I gave 3 stars because of the service and the dessert which was good. I will never go back. They are too many good restaurants in Richmond to go.
A French Bistro from 1920!
We dined at L'Opossum with bar seating that was surprisingly comfortable and intimate. It you have difficulty reserving a table, the bar is small and pleasant - plus the bartender is quite an expert! Let's start with the food - fabulous! My husband enjoyed the crab cakes which are 100% pure crabmeat - no binders whatsoever. I enjoyed the "Faberge Egg" which was not only beautifully presented, but included many of my favorite ingredients, from lobster and salmon to a light caper garnish. The Limoncello creme brulee was the perfect dessert. Moving on to the ambience and service - impeccable! It was like stepping into what one imagines of a 1920's French bistro, filled with artists, intellectuals, writers, and bohemians like myself. The service was lovely and friendly, making every effort not to interrupt our conversation. My only criticism is the wine-by-the-glass list. It was very limited and lacked the upscale wines I would have expected. I was craving Rombauer or a glass of Orin Swift's Mannequin, but unfortunately those were not among the choices. If drinking an adult beverage, I recommend a cocktail - our Manhattans were perfect. Overall a lovely, intimate evening and we will be going back again! Bon Appetit!
Be the first to ReplyExpected A LOT better!!!
Not sure from where to start…It was our first time at your restaurant as it was recommended and we came to celebrate a special occasion!
On arrival it was cold and air con blowing directly onto table from above. Do you read your reviews? I was skeptical, but many were correct!
Get your timings right for service please. If we have pre dinner cocktails do not bring out a hot appetiser before we have finished the drinks! We mentioned it to the waiter, but not sure if he really understands the dinning etiquette. Overall we felt rushed from start to finish.
Why the chef cook the fish with the gills in? The fish smelt bad and left a terrible smell when the waiter knocked the plate spilling the juice from the dish onto the table.
The dish was ok, but visually looked a disaster. So much going on! LOVE seafood and grew up next to the Meds so for me freshness is a big deal when it comes cooking seafood especially a whole fish!
Beef Wellington…just call it a steak! My husband wouldn’t have ordered had it been known. I appreciate the humour of the meal titles etc... but get the basics right first... the right ingredients for the right dish!
The decor was marvellous however and quirky! Certainly memorable from that perspective... but definitely not romantic at all! Why it’s rated 2nd for best romantic restraint I will never know!
Please allow your booking system to allow diners to book certain tables as being seated in the middle of the dining area sandwiched between 2 larger groups made for a loud uncomfortable meal. Couples would be better served in the booths. We would have preferred to sit at the bar for a far better atmosphere!
Not sure how to sum up all these:
But you lost me from Hello!!!
The only happy moment I had was when the dessert made it right on our table for 5’…rich smooth chocolate flambé paired with a nice aged Porto!
Someone on your reviews mentioned: Don’t waste your time!
We should have considered that.
It Was A WOW!
I can see why reservations two months ahead for a Wednesday are the norm. From 6pm till we finished at 8pm the tables were full. Logan was our server and was fine. Wife had the chicken and I had the filet. Both were exceptional, as was the chocolate Galeau for dessert. Could not have asked for a more pleasant meal experience. Even street parking was no problem.
Be the first to ReplySuperb -- but portions too large
My wife and I had dinner here recently. The service was exceptional. The decor and the atmosphere of the dining room was intimate, interesting, and enjoyable.
Our meals were delicious. However, we never made it to dessert because the portion size was so large. We both started with appetizers. My beet app was very tasty, but I sure didn't need a softball-sized portion of beets prior to getting to my main course. I had the beef Wellington for a main course and my wife had the crab cakes. Again, huge portions. I would have liked to see more "European" portion sizes so that we could have tried dessert.
Wines by the glass were exceptional as well.
VERY GOOD
Οne off the best restaurants in Richmond. Friendly staff, amazing food, loved everything about the place
