Sadly, now just another Italian restaurant
Batali broke ground with Babbo and then Lupa, and Lupa has been my favorite restaurant downtown for years. How things have changed. The place seems adrift- the waiter told me that they have been changing menus every week or two trying to figure out what people will pay money for. Mario knew what he wanted to bring to the people and created the menu as an artistic expression. That care was evident throughout the restaurant including the service which is now woefully unprofessional. I never used to feel rushed, but heaven help you if you want to order an appetizer while you have a good look at the menu- not possible anymore. Everything has to go in at once. It used to be that the customer was the most important concern, not to make life easier for the kitchen. Gone is the raw shaved Brussels sprouts- a signature starter. Gone is the trippa Alla Romana. Luckily the food that they do serve is still very good so no one should leave disappointed, but the soul of the place is decidedly gone.
Be the first to ReplyEmbarrassed I took clients here
Shockingly bad service. We did not get our bottle of wine until after we were done eating. Apparently there is only one copy of the wine menu and it is a long wait to get it? Then our food was delivered to the wrong table. We told our server but he was slow to check. He eventually pulled the food from the wrong table and plopped it in front of us. Our waiter was mainly missing in action. Food was fine. Fish was fairly good. Pasta was fine. Appetizers were fine. Wine selection was sad, and our waiter was not knowledgeable (we had to order off the short paper menu because the wine menu was elsewhere apparently). We all said it was “fine” but not one dish was special or great. And it was the worst service I have had in a decade. I was entertaining clients and was embarrassed I took them there.
Be the first to ReplyWhat has happened to Lupa?
We selected Lupa on our recent trip to New York based on our last experiences in November when the food was always classic Roman. So we were quite embarrassed to have brought the head of my department there for dinner. First the wine prices - Lupa is not a three star restaurant (where even they have bottles under $100) . This is a trattoria. The wine prices are outrageous - it is almost impossible to find an Italian under 100 and many are over 200. And in a trattoria setting? And tonight the food was beyond disappointing. My husband and I had the carbonara... First it was not hot.. secondly it was a sludge of flavors that bore no resemblance to the Italian classic. We ate it to be polite given our guest but if my department chair had not been there I think we would have left the plates . I am not sure what has happened but we know we will not be back.
Be the first to ReplyNothing special
We went for a light lunch and got 2 side dishes each which was about enough food for a lunch. The food was ok, nothing major.
The service was as good as expected but again nothing special.
Would probably go back if I was nearby, but I wouldn't explicitly recommend this as a tip.
Don’t go
Food was extremely poor. We ordered the spaghetti pomodoro with chillies and the bavette cacio e pepe, two dishes that it should be extremely easy to get right. The spaghetti came in a thick, sweet sauce without a hint of chilli. The other dish was cacio with no pepe. We ordered basic dishes because that’s what we fancied but we were expecting them to be well executed in a restaurant like this and in fact these dishes can be a highlight at other places when well put together. With wine, a side (broccoli which was fine) and service this came to $136 so it wasn’t cheap either. The overall feeling was as if we’d been given some food from a children’ menu.
We were also seated at the back in the worst seats in the house, by the entrance to the kitchen, in the aisle, in the dark area of the main room despite it being 4.30pm and the restaurant not being busy (we moved to an only slightly more acceptable table in the end)
I wish I had read the reviews on here before dining as I would have avoided this place. We eat in this sort of restaurant on a regular basis and I can definitely say that it’s one you should give a miss!
Food ok , service very disappointing
We walked in on a Sunday around 5pm with no reservation. There were only 2 tables occupied, so it was pretty empty at the moment. The hostess set us right next to a table and my boyfriend asked her kindly if we could sit in another adjacent tablet, in order not to bother the other client pulling out the seats and she seemed very annoyed.
The server came in and asked about our water preference without even waiting until we were seated and comfortable. After placing the order with her, we received 2 complementary appetizers which we really liked so we asked for one more of course willingly to pay. She said yes, but it never came.
I had to ask multiple times to get water for the table when our glasses were clearly empty.
They get us the appetizers that we ordered and forgot to got us plates.
The server never came back to check in with us on how was the food or if we wanted to order anything else. The only nice person was the manager I believe, he came to ask if everything was ok even if we weren’t his table.
Im from Rome, so I know the food from there and it was pretty ok to be in New York. But the food it’s unfortunately only a part of an experience in a restaurant, and being treated with such as carelessly from the staff, I would definitely never go back.
A bit disappointing experience
The ambiance and the service at this place is great. But the food is mediocre.
We had great apps, but the main courses where disappointing.
For example an very expensive spaghetti with shaved black truffles nothing more then boiled spaghetti floating in butter and overloaded with truffle shaves that doesn’t really come together.
The short rib on pasta, short rib is not soft and melting and ox tail meat in tomato sauce is actually tomato paste with tuff meat.
Just ok…
Not the most friendly staff (one exception) and the food is not tasty, lacks some soul! Not sure why it has such high reviews…
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunate Thanksgiving Experience
While tasty, our “special” thanksgiving meals were cold. Several “set menu” items were unavailable. Service was mediocre. I will not return to this restaurant. My advice: give this place a pass.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal
We had a wonderful dinner at Lupa, spaghetti carbonara and the garganelli bolognese. Both were delicious and we had an excellent super Tuscan wine that was recommended. Service very good and good atmosphere.
Be the first to Replyfirst time back to NYC
First trip to NYC since covid and wanted to do it right. Lupa was a great start with a top notch meal simple, great pasta. Covid precautions with some plastic barrieres also kept noise down!
Be the first to ReplyUnforgettable birthday celebration
I first came to Lupa about five years ago, when I was visiting SoHo for the first time. This restaurant was very memorable( with its charming ambience and delicious Italian cuisine. Today, I finally went back with my best friend to celebrate my birthday – and it was just as how I remembered! I had a lovely glass of Prosecco to commemorate the special day. Every bit of the meal was delicious. From the warm bread and olive oil to the chicken liver crostini to my outstanding black spaghetti with seafood. To top it off, we had a deliciously light strawberry cheesecake, topped with a candle. It was truly a birthday to remember!
