Delicious food, attentive staff, great wine list
My wife and I found Maialino Mare because we were staying at the Thompson hotel, in the same building. The restaurant is expensive, but we felt like splurging and not wandering too far on a cold January night.
The atmosphere for dinner is very relaxed, with low lighting, tables we'll-spaced and a gorgeous bar. We were given a quiet table as we had requested when booking. The seafood was delicious, and the wine list very complete. The waiters were all well-trained, competent, courteous and friendly.
We will definitely return.
NOT ready for prime time
Nice decor, very attentive service but food is just mediocre.
For the price there is not the reward in terms of food.
Nice wine list,
Food was well presented and pasta appropriately prepared but food was not flavorful.
Noise level is higher than I would expect for this level of restaurant
Great Birthday Meal
I'm really surprised by the negative review. My friend and I had a joint birthday dinner and were treated so well. We had multiple staff come by and wish us happy birthday. they had birthday card on our table and our glasses were never left unfilled. The food was amazing, can't say there were anything that I did not enjoy. Quality food with amazing staff made for a great night out. Only item of note is that if you are not vaccinated this place is not for you as they do require proof of vaccination to dine with them.

This was perhaps the worst dinner experiences ever in Washington DC. We travel to DC monthly from NJ where we also frequently dine in Italian cuisine restaurants. The service was slow for a half filled dining room. While the server was pleasant we waited forever to be asked for cocktail order. We noticed immediately that $24 glasses of wine were sparsely poured. Our dinner order was the real disaster however. The salad was over salted and the sardine appetizer was one small fish for $14. The pasta course was bland and when we requested bread weโre told that they were out of bread. The brocolini and squash sides were cold and the Arctic Char entrees barely five small bites. Truly a disappointment. The lady at the desk asked dinner was and I shared our experience. She asked for my email and this has now been a week ago so I must assume that management does not care to contact. An attractive restaurant in a great location. Too bad about the food.

Our group had a simply wonderful experience at Maialino Mare. Italian with a unique flair, this is a must-visit restaurant. The trout and chicken dishes were particularly good, as was the bolognese. And the tirimasu was superb! Staff were attentive and helpful but not overbearing. All in all, couldn't recommend more highly.

One of the (few) best restaurants we have experienced in DC in for some time. Interesting and well-made drinks at the bar from knowledgeable bartender, well-prepared and delicious dishes, and service that was the most exceptional we've had in years. Really exceptional service. Alert, attentive, not disruptive at all. So nice.

My wife, I, and another couple went here for dinner before a play. We were a bit ambivalent because the restaurant had not been open long and it had had a mediocre review in the Washingtonian. The only reservation we could get ahead of time was a bar booth. When we arrived they immediately showed us to about the best table in the main restaurant. Service was absolutely excellent. An unobtrusive server who knew the menu completely, made an excellent wine recommendation, and sold the other husband on what became the visually-stunning dish of the night. My wife and I split a radicchio salad. She had the sphagetti and I had the pappardella. We also split a side of funghi. All were superb! The other couple split a kale salad, then ...... Maialino al Forno slow-roast sucking pig. The maialino was OMG impressive (Peter let us have sample tastes). Crispy skin, melting-ly delicious. We finished the dinner by splitting the lemon torta and a Zabaione made with blood orange, pomegranate, and almond sponge cake. The restaurant has a lively, but not excessively loud ambience. Lots of happy diners. The only down side is the $25 valet parking charge.....parking is tough in this section of D.C. We'll definitely go back since the food and service are quite top-of-the-line.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a class act!
We went specifically to get the Malfatti al Maialino, which we have had many times in New York. We also shared an Insalata, which was wonderful. And the waiter suggested a nice red wine. We gladly paid for the bread (breadsticks that were wonderful and focaccia). We commented to the waiter that the Malfatti al Maialino was a little dry--it had more broth in New York. We didn't mean that we didn't like it--it was fine. Amazingly, they comped us for the Malfatti al Maialino. We thought that this was not fair, and tried to get them to put it back on the bill, but the manager would not. Is this a class act or what? We will definitely be back for the Pappardelle all Bolognese

My wife and I are originally from New York and have fond memories of Union Square Cafe and Grammercy Tavern--therefore we had high hopes for Maialino Mare.
These were dashed rapidly last evening. I had reserved a table for four some weeks back. At time for dinner we were puzzled when our guests were late and we hadn't heard from them. Ultimately my friend contacted me to let me know he and his wife had been seated at the rooftop bar. Once we all united downstairs the service did not appreciably improve.
The waiter was earnest and hard working but forgot to bring drinks. The dishes themselves were almost universally bland and average.
In a town with a ton fo choices we will not be rushing back.
Long wait between courses
This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend who frequented their sister restaurants in NYC. We were celebrating a special event and although the prices seemed high we made reservations.
The food was delicious. As for sharing and the prices, the pasta plates should be larger. We waited an extremely long wait between courses without anyone checking on us. No bread was delivered to our table. As a new restaurant they need to work out some issues.
When I mentioned something the staff they were MOST apologetic and made good by offering us some extras. A nice touch and good policy.
Tip was included in their bill so that brought down the prices of the dishes.
I would try them again.
