Makan Washington Reviews from The Last Year
BEWARE 10% service fee is added and this doesn't go towards
BEWARE 10% service fee is added and this doesn't go towards the staff tips as stated on the menu and by our server when checking out. So that means on top of the 10%, you would have to tip an additional 20% tips to your server. An extra 30% on top of my meal does not make sense. They used to have 22% automatic tip, which is fine since all that goes to the waiters. Amazing food and service otherwise.
Delicious food, excellent dessert, and great attentive
Delicious food, excellent dessert, and great attentive service. So far, I've tried the following: - Char Kway Teow (Penang street noodle) - really popular choice among Yelp reviews here, but honestly, I thought it was nothing mind-blowing. Good and filling dish, but it was really just like pad see ew, so I don't see much of a difference here. - Rendang (dry mushroom curry) - interesting to have mushrooms with curry flavor, but I love mushrooms, and this is no exception. Unique and great taste. - Sambal Udang Petai (shrimp) - I liked the sauce on the shrimp; it had a nice spicy kick without being too spicy. It was also my first time to try petai beans; they're similar to edamame beans, and I enjoyed them. - Wantan Mee (special dish with egg noodle, barbeque pork, pork & shrimp wonton, pickled chili) - great egg noodles and the pork. Wontons were fried, which disappointed me a bit, since I love soft (non-fried) wontons, but the taste was still good (I just prefer non-fried ones!). - Dan dan mian - unfortunately can't remember how it tasted. Though that may sound unmemorable, it must've tasted good enough for me to not be scarred from it :) DESSERTS: - Sago (tapioca) - TINY portion, but delicious and surprisingly satiating. The tapioca pearls were tiny and thick, while the cream was delightfully light and sweet and smooth (sweetness is like that of Vietnamese iced coffee. - Roti & Kaya (roti canai, coconut-pandan custard) - oh my god, SO delicious. All the reviews raved about the sago, but we thought Roti & Kaya was even better (sooo good that we actually ordered another one of this because of how good it was!). The hot, fresh roti canai dipped into cold, refreshing, and sweet custard was an amazing, mind-blowing combination. Some reviews complained about the portions, but my friends and I thought they were just fine. We were all quite full from the food, especially after we ordered another one of the "Roti & Kaya" dessert! I am an athletic woman and arrived at this restaurant after doing a workout AND a 30-minute bike ride to here. So yeah, I think I have a pretty hearty appetite, but I am completely satisfied with the food here. There were four of us, and we shared the dishes family-style (with extra utensils for each dish as precautions against COVID-19). Highly recommend you to do the same so that you can sample more dishes and perhaps feel more full.
Beef rendang and especially char kway teow were delicious
Beef rendang and especially char kway teow were delicious and fairly authentic in flavor. Similar to Malaysia but lacking some of the sides necessary to make the dishes whole.
We went as a family of 4 for dinner on a Tuesday night.
The place was not busy and had quite a few tables open, even one by the window. We asked if we could sit there, the greeter was rude and just said "no" and walked away, she didn't even try to give the usual restaurant BS about the table was reserved, etc etc., just "no". We guessed she wanted to reserve the table for more beautiful people when they come in, which they didn't as the table was empty the whole time we were there! Reading other reviews that mentioned the greeter, she was on brand tonight: rude and bitchy. As for our food, between food and drinks, we ordered a total of 12 items. For one of the items, we asked the waitress whether we should order 1 or 2 qty given there were 4 of us; her recommendation was 2. She then repeated every item we ordered and confirmed everything. At the end, 3 of the items never showed up, she missed a 1/4 of the order! Too bad, their loss! the whole experience was terrible and I do not recommend.
I tried this restaurant for the first time with my family
I tried this restaurant for the first time with my family tonight. The food was so/so, but the service was terrible. I will never go back and do not recommend it. The hostess was rude, the waitress was apathetic, unhelpful, and even after confirming our order twice missed 3 items when she put through the order to the kitchen. The tables were tiny and dishes big, so it was a balancing act to fit everything ordered. The only good thing I can say about the restaurant was the cocktail was good and the buswoman was on top of things cleaning up the table.
Absolutely amazing.
Hands down, my favorite restaurant in DC! The food was so good but the service was even better! Our waiter was an absolutely pleasure. He was so informative and attentive. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough. We'll definitely be coming back! Highly recommend trying any of the drinks, and both dessert options are fabulous.

My husband and I are visiting our daughter here in DC and one of the best things about coming here is the food! Makan I am example of not just a meal but an experience that you will remember. We had a reservation and got seated right away. We were greeted by the hostess but also every staff person we walked past said hello and welcome. The inside space is nicely decorated and it was a bit loud when it was crowded but not to the point we couldn't hear each other. There were 4 of us and we ordered 4 different cocktails so we could all taste them. They were all well balanced, interesting and delicious. I could have had the espresso martini again for dessert! We ordered 1 small plate and 3 entrees for 4 of us to share. The fried yuca with coconut was hot and fresh. The flavorful bits on the side made it extra delicious. The mains we shared were the dried beef, friend chicken and the spicy Hakka noodles. Not one bad bite!!! The flavors were bright and interesting. The spicy noodles are very spicy so have a Kleenex handy! Our server made great suggestions and was friendly and checked in often without being intrusive. Such a wonderful dinner. We talked about the food the rest of the night and I'm sure we will still be talking about it for days to come! A memory making experience!
The two additional stars (i.
e. above the first one) is for the super-nice and kind server. The single star: This restaurant doesn't identify in any way which dish is an appetiser and which a main dish. One finds out only after it's too late: i.e. after the dish has arrived. By then it's obviously too late, and one can't send the food back, once they already prepared it. This is a deceptive practice, perhaps just another "clever" form of shrinkflation. The server was very kind about it when I gently explained, and pointed out that they mentioned this to management already, but nothing has changed. Well, I hope this review may contribute to eventual change.
ordered 3 entrees.
Rendang, Char kway tiaw and mee goreng. very dissatisfied with the taste and authenticity of Malaysian food. Ridiculously overpriced and a mandatory 22% gratuity. If you're looking for good to great Malaysian dishes, avoid this place despite their deceptive website posts. my one and done
I have been a big fan of Malaysian food since my trip to
I have been a big fan of Malaysian food since my trip to Malaysia last year. So I was excited to try this spot right here in DC. The outdoor dining set up was a great vibe on a warm summer evening and the service was helpful and friendly. One of my favorite parts of Southeast Asian cuisine are the savory fruit salads, and I really enjoyed the spicy mango salad here. However, the star of the show, the beef rendang, left a lot to be desired. The portion sizes here are huge, but it lacked flavor. It was tenderly braised beef, but unfortunately I didn't taste salt or seasoning.
Bad service for delicious food
While the food was delicious, the service left a lot to be desired. The place was mostly empty on a slow Tuesday night, but the waiter rushed us to order within 2 minutes of sitting, and another member of the service team tried to clear our plates 10 minutes after we were served -- touching our plates without even asking us! Really disappointing service. That said, the spicy noodles were delicious.
Favorite Dinner Experience
Our waiter, Mohamed, made our dinner a night to remember. Suggestions of traditional dishes were just what we wanted for our first tastes of Malaysian cuisine. Spicy Hakka Noodles and Penang Street Noodles were our favorites. Michelin-starred 2023.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
