Good food, vibe too cool for school
I booked a table at 5.30pm as this was the only time available. I contacted the restaurant to see if there was any later availability and was directed to the website -- which didn't work, so I decided just to go with the ridiculously early reservation. When we arrived at 5.25 they wouldn't let us in as they were having a staff meeting. Staff kept going in and out and cheerily announcing that they'd let us in soon -- like they were doing us a favour. It was the end of January and it was cold. If they're going to take 5.30 bookings they need to let people in 5-10 minutes before. It was a bit pretentious with 'concepts' around the menu. I can't help feeling they should stop trying to be so cool and concentrate on the food, which was actually very good. A couple of simple-looking pastas were actually delicious and most of the meat dishes were very good too. Our bill was just under £70 a head which I thought was ok but it could easily escalate to a lot more than that if you don't keep an eye on it. The place is clearly very popular as it was full all evening, even very early on. We were told to vacate our table at 8pm which, in principle, I don't mind, but it wasn't mentioned when I booked (including a credit card to confirm the reservation). Overall, it's a good place, just a bit up its own a*se!

We sat at the counter and thoroughly enjoyed watching the chefs at work. Food here is very much ingredients-led; dishes showcase their components in a vibrant way, and the menu changes frequently based on what they can buy that's good. Their home-cured charcuterie is excellent. Service was very engaging, and we ordered dishes as we went along. The pasta dishes we had were particularly good. Savoury dishes were better than desserts.

Love, love, love this place and go there often. I have coeliac disease and they are great at handling it. They marked the menu to highlight dishes I couldn't have but could alter others so I could still enjoy them. They can offer nearly all of their pasta dishes with GF pasta and there are plenty of other dishes on the menu suitable for those of us with gluten sensitivity. Recommend.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food - But Probably Won't Rush Back
Went here with a group of friends. Very buzzy atmosphere, service was excellent - shout out to the amazing waitress we had. The concept is around sharing. Our waitress advised on how many plates for snacks, starters, main etc for the size of our group - and she was spot on. The problem for me was that although all the food we ordered was executed really well there were a lot of cold dishes. To be fair that was partially down to me but would have been helpful if the menu stated that a certain dish was tartare (as with the venison) or cured/ceviche (as with the pollock). We started with a plate of cold meats and then majority of the dishes we ordered were tartare, cured/ceviche or just cold except for the pasta. I eat anything but did find it hard going munching my way way through so many cold dishes which is why I don't feel the need to go back unfortunately. I gave this a four stars as can't complain about the quality/execution of the dishes and service was excellent.

Heard great things about Manteca, made a reservation 2months in advance and had a small table at the back! Service was very good and good recommendations. Menu reads well, food well presented but needs a little more oomph, it lacked seasoning in a number of dishes, the brown crab pasta and pollock crudo were especially disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding italian food
I’ve been hearing good things about Manteca for quite a while now so it was about time we decided to pay a visit ourselves. Well I can honestly say that all the great things I’d heard were true. This was a fabulous dining experience where we enjoyed amazing Italian food , fabulous wine and the friendliest of service. I really can’t wait to return. So now let’s move to the day itself. The restaurant is on curtain road and just a short five minute walk from Liverpool Street station. The place used to be prezzo until it was taken over to become Manteca. We arrived a little early which didn’t turn out to be a problem and we were escorted to our table in our choice of the dining room right in front of the open kitchen. You can also book to sit at the counter or downstairs. Once seated we looked around and quite a lot of the tables are close together and when we went downstairs there are obviously no windows and was very busy so I don’t think I would like to sit there unless there was a group of you perhaps. So my recommendation would be to book the dining room. We then got to meet our waitress for the day Candela who I really can’t praise enough as she did an excellent job in looking after us. This started by her coming to say hello and asking if we’d been before. We said this was our first time so she firstly said welcome before bringing us the menu and explaining how it all works as well as giving us her recommendations. The menu is italian small plates designed for sharing of snacks , starters , pasta , mains , sides and a separate dessert menu. This gives you the opportunity to choose as many dishes as you like and where you can make your experience as short or as long as you wish. We decided to start with some Wildfarmed Focaccia with rosemary which was brought to our table along with a fabulous orange wine. The Brisat 2021 from the Entre Vinyes in Spain was a skin contact , natural wine that was light and fruity and complimented every dish perfectly. We now moved on to the starters. Here we ordered the Bitter Leaf Salad with pear , gorgonzola dolce and pecorino romano , Cornish Squid with green pepper salsa , Venison Buttata with an egg yolk dressing , cicoria and pangretatto along with the Nduja Steamed Mussels. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavours in each dish were amazing. Next to arrive were two absolutely delicious Pasta dishes. One was the Strozzapreti a brown crab cacio e pepe. The other was the Campanelle a beef ragu , lettuce and remoulade. Now it was time for the Main course and wow. The slow cooked Pork Blade with roasted blush onions and three cornered leek was simply stunning. We accompanied this with the Escarole , shallots and chilli (sorry no pic) that really enhanced the flavours of the pork. Dessert Time and we wasn’t to be disappointed here either. The Pistachio and Fennel Cake with pistachio ice cream was a dream and the Chocolate Cake with whey caramel was absolute heaven. Then to top it all of I had an Espresso con Zabaglione that left me in paradise. This brought to an end an absolutely fantastic dining experience and one I’ll be looking forward to repeating again soon. The food is amazing , the wine was heaven and the service from our waitress Candela and the team was excellent. I really can’t recommend a visit to Manteca highly enough. I would advise to book the dining room as it gives you views of the kitchen , the bar and the bread / pasta making and dessert station.
Be the first to ReplyOver rated - fast service with small plates
Sat next to a dishwasher. Pasta was over cooked and floppy. Was not asked for second drinks during our meal. Starters arrived and waiter was so quick he spilt the starters on the table. Difficult to recommend this place just for over priced bread. Definitely not the 11th best restaurant as suggested by the restaurant awards.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, small portions
Family of 5 (adult children) ate here one Sunday evening. A busy, crowded and obviously 'happening' place. Food was good. Not your standard Italian fare with tasty freshly cooked pasta. Service was spotty but fine. Some food took some time. Really small portions which means I've rated 'value' as average. It wasn't bad but I'm not raving about it.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely worth a visit for the food!
Maanteca has been on my foodie list forever and finally managed to snag a booking for a Monday night and it was busy. The staff are friendly and service was good. So we ordered the foccacia which was yum and I wanted more but resisted. We ordered the rigatoni with kale sauce and chilli and that was good and so was the tonarelli with brown crab. We ordered the whole seabream which I think was wood roasted and a generous size fish and this was good. Succulent and flaky. We also ordered the bitter leaf salad which was pear, gongozola, and pecarino. I liked this salad . The cacio e pepe (cold spagetti) was good but it was a smaller dish could do with a tad slightly larger portion. To finish off we had a pistachio fennel cake with pistachio ice cream and this was good too. I liked this place. The menu is based on the sharing concept and we were advised to order 5 to 6 dishes. The dishes are served as and when they are ready. I would recommend this place and book in advance.

Visited the Shoreditch restaurant recently as wanted to see what the fuss is about. Left confused as people were actually queuing to eat in what is easily one of the worst restaurants I have eaten in over the past 12 months. Firstly the place is filthy, floors, toilets, tables, glass, you name it, it needs a serious deep clean. Secondly the food was shocking, tasteless, badly cooked and cold. Of four dishes we had three were sent back and the fourth was lukewarm. Only decent thing was getting of the place and then looking for somewhere else for food.
Be the first to ReplyDid Not Live Up to Expectations.
Great praise has landed on Manteca from the National Press by reviewers such as Jay Rayner and Jimi Famurewa. We arrived for lunch, at their Curtain Road premises, expecting great things. Did we get great things? Well yes and no. Firstly, the restaurant is very noisy making it difficult to talk or hear the staff, who were good by the way. Secondly, many of the plates were badly chipped, we asked for one plate to be swapped, the chip was razor sharp but gave up after that. We noticed this was the same for other diners. We wondered if this was by design, as an eco -friendly feature, or had there been a catastrophe in the kitchen during last night’s service? Onto the food. Everything is made on site including the salumi, ricotta and pasta Most are small plates ,but there are some larger ones. We started with 3 small plates, fennel salami, ricotta and a tomato salad. Surprisingly the tomato salad was the best of the three, the other two we felt were average. My partner then had the Duck Ragu, this was exceptional. I had a whole plaice which was good, but I was annoyed by the size of the plate it was served on. There was nowhere to put the removed bone after filleting. My partner ordered a carafe of Refosco, but received a glass. I suppose the waiter did not hear him correctly above the noise. He did not mention it, and was glad he didn’t as he thought it was decidedly average. Mostly the service was good, prompt and knowledgeable. The food is good, if not outstanding. Would we go here again? Probably not, but please do not let us put you off as it well worth a visit. It also relatively cheap for the quality of food being served. Booking is advisable.

We had a booking for our daughter's birthday. She tested positive for covid. We tried to contact them to cancel. They did not answer the phone and did not reply to our email. They then charged us 30 pounds per head. Will not go there again.
Be the first to ReplyGood but not great
We loved the atmosphere of this busy restaurant, however, the use of salt was far too liberal for dining at this level. I had to return a dish and the replacement had so much less salt, so clearly it had been added after prep. I watched the staff and noticed how much certain members of staff were literally throwing it on - strange! The other aspect was whilst it was pointed out that pasta dishes would only be 90 grams, our 2 different dishes were vastly differing in portion size and that in my book is a no-no! The home made pasta was excellent quality however. We tried 3 different wines and found them all disappointing. Service was good, despite how full it was.

This place was pretty much full when we arrived for lunch at 12:05 which I think says it all! The restaurant is a really lovely venue with full frontal opening windows which was great as we had a lovely weather during our visit. Staff were great and very helpful as it was our first visit. The food was fabulous! Each dish was so fresh and if our bellies allowed, we would have stayed and ordered more! Great wine selection to compliment the amazing food.

Although way out of central london theShoreditch restaurant is worth a visit. You need to book and at 530 when it opened it filled very quickly. It is a bit like a tapas place with small dishes to share but every single one was delicious. The mussels were divine as was the duck pate and the bread……OMG. we skid had a couple of pastas but he made with fresh pasta. Long wine list but no sommelier which I would expect at this price range.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful moderately priced dinner, well deserving thr accolades it’s received.
A complete standout meal in London. Sat at the bar (lucky to get a reservation, people were being turned away on a Monday night). Specially recommend the duck ragout pasta and the pink fir fried potatoes. George the barman couldn’t have been more helpful.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food but rushed and rude service
I visited here with 4 of my colleagues one Tuesday evening. We had booked a table for 6pm. When we arrived the table was ready and we were quickly seated. I liked the menu and the quickness with which the food arrived. The waitress serving was efficient but a little rude I felt. Overall a nice place to visit and enjoy the ambience.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals I have every had!
I first went here when it was by Oxford Circus, and I loved it. This was the first time I have been since it moved to Shoreditch, and it is even better! Such a cool restaurant with fantastic staff! The food was next level! One of the best meals I have every had! Every dish we had was incredible, with highlights being the Nduja Mussels, Focaccia, Duck Ragu, Baked Whole Gurnard Fish, Grilled Greens with Salsa Rossa and finally the Beef Fat Fudge!!! Would give it six starts if I could! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Visited on a Friday lunchtime. We were placed on a table closely sandwiched between two noisy groups. We were moved on request, and the staff were very understanding. Had a selection of dishes including crab pasta and a pork ragu dish, which were outstandingly good. Really exceptional food and friendly service. The restaurant is noisy - the acoustics are bad because of the hard surfaces maybe. Tables quite close together. Separate ladies and men’s loos, thankfully. Nobody likes gender neutral facilities so I hope they don’t cave into pressure to do this. I would have given this restaurant a 5 star review were it not for the acoustic issue.

Visited for lunch in anticipation of it probably making the top 100 this year (it came in at 11). Was seated promptly at the counter. Took a while for my beer to come and it wasn't a pint, which the server told me it would be. Olives and pork fry was very nice, the pig ragu was sensational. Unfortunately my pasta main of duck fazoletti was very overcooked and watery with little flavour. I attempted to send it back but after a few mins of trying to get someone's attention I just ate it. Never mind.

Interesting new restaurant: perfectly cooked John Dory on the bone, with well prepared and interesting sides. Service good. Fun and good. Will try it again.
Be the first to ReplyThe worst service for smaller tables
Myself and a friend went to Manteca for Lunch on 29th March and unfortunately received the worst service I’ve had at a restaurant in some time. There was a total lack of attention and hospitality received at our table whilst larger tables received personalised service for the duration of their stay, with one waiter consistently providing quality service to one specific table whilst our table received next to none from any waiters.
We waited over 30 minutes for someone to offer to take our order after my friend arrived. I then received my first course half an hour after this, which wasn’t too bad. However, there was no sign of my friend’s plate anywhere near. Her first course arrived nearly 30 minutes after mine, which meant she was sitting at the table hungry for quite a long time after I’d received my meal. There was absolutely no co-ordination of the meals. We were supposed to have a second course and saw no sign of this course either for nearly 30 minutes after the first. Due to the lack to service and attention to our table and having already been in the restaurant for over two hours. we cancelled our second course and decided to leave. It took near enough 2 hours to receive just one course and it was so difficult to get the attention of any waiters for anything.
When we notified a different waiter regarding the issues of our waiting times, he informed that one of the second courses takes 45 minutes hence the wait (no explanation as to the wait for the first course) however we were not notified of this prior to our ordering the food, otherwise we would have ordered something else.
The food itself was okay. I had the Duck Ragu which was nice but there was nothing outstanding about the meal that you couldn’t get elsewhere with better service. As a word of advice, only go here if you plan on going in a huge group of 10+. It’s the only way you’ll receive quality service. Such a shame.
Nose to tail the perfect restaurant
I can't recommend Manteca enough for its unctuous food and warm, friendly service. Every restaurant should have one good dish. This one has several. And that it was full on a Tuesday lunchtime tells you how good it is.
It is beautiful and elegant plates of nose to tail Italian cooking without being pretentious.
The pig skin ragu was rich, indulgent and fun with its enormous skin crisp. The beef shin pappardelle was rustic and sweet. The duck fazzoletti pasta was perfection without being rich. The fried olive bites are beautiful on their own. As is the salumi plate.
If you want to witness craftsmanship, book a seat at the kitchen counter.
I really enjoyed our lunch and will definitely be back.
Sensational
The food was outstanding.
Decor and ambience spot on.
Our waiter Costa was incredible.
We were really looked after and spent a small fortune because we couldn’t get enough of the food! Dont hesitate and book, you won’t regret it!
Food — ★★★★★, service — ★★
Every dish (crab pasta, wagyu steak, focaccia, rhubarb cake) were absolutely superb!
Unfortunately let down by quite a bad service: order mixed up, had to chase for every dish numerous times and got overcharged in the end — very inefficient, inattentive and unprofessional.
