Cool vibe, it's a nice social place to hang out and get some unique cocktails with some delightfully spicy food.
Be the first to ReplyI really wanted to like this place.
Its a cool space and decorated well. The food was ok/good but a little on the pricey side for what it was. But by far it was the most uncomfortable dining experience I think I have ever had. My back, literally hurts from trying to position myself to eat the food in the peculiar dining set up they have. The chairs a very small, and not set up very well with tables. I had very little legroom, and I am pretty short myself. My friends were miserable because we couldn't relax and enjoy themselves.

This is my first ever yelp review and this place is the only reason I wanted to write one. We got two drinks, and order of the curry puffs, which we totally had to get another order of. The best staff, amazing ambiance, and the music really impressed me. Me and my friend felt totally welcomed and comfortable the whole time and decided it's an absolute return. The staff also brought out an order of chive dumplings on the house. Love you guys so much. Truly a sweet staff
Be the first to ReplyFood was ok but service was even worse.
Had a birthday dinner with a large party and the host took my bottle of rum which was a birthday gift. We had no intention of opening the bottle and was going to put away since we understood that no alcoholic beverages were allowed. Staff was rude and shouldn't be in the hospitality business with that type of attitude. My friends and I had such a horrific experience and NEVER going back. There's many other places worth going to with good service.

Super cool vibes, that transports you to an evening in Bangkok - in a run down theater type space. It's dark, moody and the seating is literally movie theater style (red scratchy material) seats. I would suggest to come for drinks and some apps - enjoy your time and go for dinner elsewhere. There just isn't enough room (physical table space) to really enjoy your meal. But it's certainly a cool experience - if your in the neighborhood, go!
Be the first to ReplyA very unique spot.
Coming here feels like stepping into a different version of reality for a bit. It's moody, there are movies playing silently while the Beatles play out loud, and the decor is part movie theater, part street market. We didn't realize 2 hours had passed. The food felt simple yet authentic, and I appreciated that this wasn't the same Thai food you can get at the many other Thai spots around. We got the veggie curry puffs, laab talay, and khao mun gai, which were all great! I'd never had medicinal libations, which we split between the 2 of us and had 4-5 shots each. They went down smooth! The only things that can be hit or miss are 1) the seating, we were seated next to each other facing the projector, 2) it took time for the food to cook so this prob isn't the best spot if you're in a rush, 3) they can invest in tableware besides paper plates
Be the first to ReplyCustomer service was horrible.
We were 5 minutes late for our reservation and the person there was cursing me out in my birthday

Original atmosphere. Friendly staff. The best place to take people visiting NYC. Sure to impress.

Every single seat in this place is no higher than 16 inches off the ground. It's like they raided a kindergarten classroom when they set up the place. I was looking forward to trying the food here, but we left immediately after the server informed us there were no seating alternatives even remotely comfortable for fully-grown adults. I don't know anyone who wants to eat curry in a dark, dirty room in the fetal position. Another commenter described the place as "Chuck E Cheese for hipsters" and that nails it. Bushwick deserves better.

Food was great, service was good and the atmosphere was amazing. Would definitely recommend and revisit this spot again. Friday night around 6pm for a group of 5 and we were seated right away without reservations.
Be the first to ReplyCame here twice for the vibes, snacks, and drinks.
I wouldn't come here for dinner food as much
Be the first to ReplyOn the recommendation of a friend who shall remain
On the recommendation of a friend who shall remain nameless, :cough: Louis, my friends and I, minus ironically Louis, came to Mao Mao after a rather rude Uber ride. The place is sort of hidden around the corner of desolate and graffiti riddled storefronts. Word of warning: it's a super dark place like literally. It's like they haven't paid their light bill and are relying on dim candlelight. It's a lot like in the movies where the main character visits an opium den. It's the Thai restaurant version of a movie opium den. The interior was what I can only describe as eclectic eccentricity. The seats were a mix of bar stools, darkly painted children's chairs, and plush movie seats. The tables are so low, there is basically no space between it and the floor. Our group was originally 10 but only 5 came. Perhaps those 5 knew the real deal about Mao Mao.We kind of had 2 servers, a male and female, both faux friendly and full of polite and insulting condensation. Props to authenticity because the menu was in Thai, the descriptions were in English, and there were no pictures. Actually, the descriptions and no pictures were all rendered moot because there was NO LIGHT to read it properly! To the food, we all had various plates of white rice and pork. I had minced pork with basil sauce and rice. I asked them to make it spicy, they didn't. Also, I barely tasted any of the sauce. Then again, I probably couldn't see it because, you know, no light! The plate was small for a "large" plate and my other friend, who only got a "small" plate, was very surprised when she got hers on a plate usually reserved to be placed on the bottom of teacups. It cost $11. Mine cost $15.Perhaps this a Thai thing or maybe they're afraid of a violent uprising because of the miniscule amount of food and their abhorrent behavior but what the hell is up with the plastic plates and forks with no knives? Like, dudes, I'm in a damn restaurant not a backyard barbecue! Wait, let me take it back, in every backyard barbecue I've been to, I was given a plastic fork AND a KNIFE. It wasn't worth it. My food was very lackluster. As of right now, about an hour and a half later, I'm hungry. I wish I gotten pizza. To make matters worse, they added gratuity for our group of 5. According to the cold and condescending waitress, they do that with everyone including solo diners. Really? For one person? To get charged 20% gratuity? And have the audacity to ask for an additional tip? Sorry, I'm not about that life and neither are my friends. Overall, I think this place gets cred for being authentic Thai and gets to treat its patrons however the hell it wants. Mao Mao isn't worth the trip, isn't worth the money, and isn't worth the time.
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a Sunday night and the ambience was so awesome.
Nicely themed with a vintage Thai cinema vibe, the food, drinks, and friendly staff really made my last night in Brooklyn memorable. I would recommend coming here to start your night off with some great food and cocktails. Definitely coming back the next time I'm in town

amazing place with, in my opinion, the best dumplings i've ever had, period! staff here is really friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. these items are quite unique compared to other thai restaurants i've ever been to. most importantly, this is one of the most thematically sound places i've been too-- vintage everything with lots of traditional thai elements. and their alcohol selection is fabulous!
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance and the restaurant itself is worth the trip.
Super cool posters and odds and ends to look at. The projection movie is also fun to watchThe food / drink... insanely overpriced and not worth it. Drinks come in small plastic cups (14$) I was shocked by how small it was. The food is served on paper plates with plastic cutlery... if you want this laid back vibe, you can't charge the prices you are with the quality and quantity of food. Just meh. won't come back. I took the photos I needed to remember

Filthy, loud, hot, poorly ventilated, dark, crowded, uncomfortable, expensive, plastic forks, small paper plates to match the small food serving sizes, chicken bone shard found in food, lukewarm soda in can, no desserts, indifferent service, mandatory (unmentioned) tip added to bill for a party of five. If I wasn't somebody's guest, I would have walked out. A Chuck E. Cheese for hipsters.
Be the first to ReplyThe 3 stars is only for the food .
I actually had a good time here & the food was good but what ruined the experience was the waiter strongly suggesting I give him a bigger tip. Read: He told me that I need to give him a bigger tip because anyone who comes there to dine do not give a tip less than 18% and if I couldn't do that calling and picking up my food was an option . Outside of that we got the steamed and fried dumplings, chicken wings, the pork and noodle meal and the Hard D--k drink . they were playing a movie but the screen was grainy, no subtitles ( it was an Asian movie ) and if you sit on the lower level prepare to be looking up at the screen. Am more upset by the waiter's behavior .

Wanted to love this place but don't want to eat grandma's hair in my larb either. Esan sausage doesn't have the sourness that it should have. Khao kieb pak mor is ok but the coconut milk topping to be unpleasant. I've been to the restaurant and have tried other menu items. Food is on the sweeter sweeter side and Overall disappointed.

Great food and ambiance! The beef larb was so spicy I went through three waves of crying and sweating through all my pores - but I kept going back for more. The dishes are reasonably priced, served on styrofoam places reminiscent of quick snacks. In the background you can find old Thai boxing on a projector screen. Maomao is off the beaten path (if you're not in Bushwick) but you won't regret the old school Thai vibes and hip crowd.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place to bring a date or group of friends.
Our server was wonderful and gave us good recommendations.
Be the first to ReplyOnly one vegetarian main dish option.
It's small and mediocre. They screen Muay Thai on a huge screen so you are forced to watch violence and blood as you eat.A pity because the place interior design is freaking awesome.

The music was so loud it was hard to enjoy anything because our ears were ringing! The food was just okay, the service was very friendly though. I do not recommend the girlfriend cocktail.

Takeaway- stop by for drinks in a cool, or rather interesting, ambiance but skip the food.I enjoyed both the lychee cocktail and spicy mango cocktail. We tried 3 dishes but only enjoyed the chicken wings. The pork in chef's special spicy sauce was spicy like the title, but the texture was a little dry and chewy. We also paid $15 for a plate with unseasoned nuts, and diced ginger, onions, chili and lime. I assume it was meant to be mixed together like chaat or trail mix but the diced lime still had the rind on it. Definitely overpriced for the food.Warning- the difference between the male and female bathrooms is comical.
