Try the Pelmeni- the dumplings, I promise you won't be dissapointed! Also if you go, definitely go to the toilet, you will be pleasantly surprised to hear some Russian fairy tales being recited. We come here regularly as a family. Everything in this restaurant is fantastic; from the food, the decorations ( styled like an old Russian apartment), to the desserts. Try the food, listen to the music, have a shot of vodka and most definitely try the honey cake!

Kitsch Russian tchotchkes adorn the walls; the loos have ย the same admonition to"Respect The Work Of The Cleaners" that one would have found in a Brezhnev era restaurant. Food is largely homely Russian classics, well executed. Both food and drinks are steeply priced, presumably to milk the Russian emigre crowd who make up the core clientele . Wait staff have a tendency to sniffy judgement, especially if they think you don't speak Russian (oops).

Owner treats stuff in appropriate way. A friend of mine used to work at that crap place and tells me a horrible story about that shit hole. Women owner treats people like slave. Always try to cut money from stuff, abnormal bossy behavior, value only ass kisser. Be aware of that location, there is a lot of nice places which can introduce to you Russian cuisine.

For the Russian diaspora visits to a restaurant of the Mari Vanna chain with locations in Moscow, London, Baku and New York is an occasionally unavoidable undertaking. Typically, Russians while abroad like to stay away from anything reminding them of home, in particular unknown fellow citizens from the former SSRs (). So a visit usually involves local (non-Russian) friends who have pushed hard ย enough to try Russian cuisine (without mustering the courage - potentially too dangerous! - to visit Russia ย itself). The chain is interestingly owned by the mini-conglomerate Adamant.ru from Petersburg, which has the typical amalgamated history of daring entrepreneurship, favorable privatizations, the right coverage from above () and below (). No judgment on that please if you know anything about RU in the 90s!!.Atmosphere: furnished with period furniture and ample decorative pieces it is like a movie set for a Tolstoi novel or time travel into Russia's past. Hence warm, cozy and entirely pleasant to the eye. (8/10).Crowd: romantically-minded couples (one side being almost always from Russia, see above), families, tourists. Don't expect a high turnout of self-respecting Russian models or Insta-Ladies. Occasionally more boisterous Vodka-fueled groups. (7/10).Food: it is very good and very authentic. Home-style cooking at its best. Expect all the classics of Russian cuisine, from the breads, the soups, the salads, the fish & meat to the desserts. In this respect you can't go wrong here! Portions are generous so bring an appetite or share! (8/10).Drinks: again, everything you may have heard about is available. Mors is very fruity and rather on the heavy side for my taste. (7/10).Service: informed, efficient, fast, knowledgeable. Waiters obviously speaking English - but all native Russians, so an opportunity to hone your language skills! (8/10)

Terrible service, rude staff and my friends jacket was stolen with a passport and other documents.

Even though there where security cameras, they didn't work. Clearly just for decoration, but that's tea honey. Good mash potatoes and bloody Mary's and Moscow mule.

This has been my third Mari Vanna (after New York and Los Angeles) that I've been to and I can definitely say it's been the worst. I have no idea how they can all be under the same ownership because they vary in quality and presentation so much. I am only giving the two stars because the decor was so consistent with the other locations. I love the wallpaper and dish ware but the food oh god. No way. New York location is beyond amazing. The taste and presentation there are both amazing. But both aspects in London location are insanely underwhelming. The meat in the borscht was lacking in flavor. The pelmeni was bad. Pretty much disliked everything we ordered. New York management should really make a trip out there to show them how it's done!

My first Russian meal! I came here with a Russian friend who has been many times before so felt confident we would have a good meal. The restaurant was reminiscent of her childhood with old photos on the walls, jars of pickles and many other things all over the small rooms. It was a bit much for me to take in but thankfully the food made up for it.Delicious dumplings were fresh, light yet filling. Perogi was also enjoyable, one beef and one mushroom filled. The star of the show is the Borscht soup. Rich in flavour with beets and small chunks of beef. Sour cream mixed in compliments it well. I could probably do without the herring layered salad next time. A bit too fishy for my taste and I love sushi. Selection of pickles was perfect. If you want an authentic experience (my friend's perspective) and in my case, a unique taste of Russia, then this is your place. As for the toilets that other reviewers have mentioned, I found it creepy but it's definitely worth judging for yourself.

I'd say the best Russian cuisine in London and NYC! I've been to both and the service and quality are consistent. Traditional favorites, intriguing ambience and if your up for it work your way through their infused vodka line up, about 20 to chose from. Highly recommended

I'm Russian-born and from my point of view the food was overpriced for what it was. The menu wasn't very extensive and didn't include certain staples of Russian cuisine. Russian food is pretty simple and doesn't require expensive ingredients, with certain exceptions, of course, but it ended up being the most expensive place we ate at in London. The food was good, but not exceptional. Underwhelmed for the price. Service, however, was very pleasant.
