A unique cuisine in NYC market and an eclectic dining room
A unique cuisine in NYC market and an eclectic dining room decor that reminds me of what a fancy upscale restaurant would have looked like in the Soviet days. Excellent food and attentive service made it a great dining experience. The appetizers were all excellent although in hindsight I would not have gotten the smoked fish platter or the meat platter. Not that it wasn't good but it wasn't unique to what you could get elsewhere. I would, however, recommend the tongue, herring, and pork fat which were the best and unique. The shaved pork lard, especially, was excellent (similar to lardo in Italian cuisine). Served on bread with raw garlic, excellent horseradish, and salt and pepper, it was one of my favorites. Oh, word of warning, their horseradish and mustard and at full strength so watch how much you use. It will certainly clear up any sinus issues you may have. Beef stroganoff was great, as expected. The kebabs and lamb chops were also great and was served with vegetables and flat bread that complimented the fish very well. It's interesting to see the influence of middle eastern cuisine in Russian cooking (along with other European and Asiancountries). Vodka shots, of course, are not to be missed. They have house infused vodka shots that hit the spot. Finally, the desserts were a true highlight here. The cakes, blintzes, etc. we're all unique and quite delicious. For something different (non sushi, steak, Italian, Chinese, Korean than what's readily available in NYC I'd recommend you try this place.

We were seated right away without waiting. Food was amazing. I haven't had good Russian food in a while. Haven't tried the drinks but definitely next time. They looked delicious.

Delicious food and friendly atmosphere I am from Russia and can confirm that this place is the real deal. I went to their Moscow location a couple of times too. Great vibe. I brought a friend from TN there to get him to try some 'exotic' foods... And he absolutely loved it.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic authentic Russian food and fun environment.
Decor made this place unique and the music was on point. It was worth mentioning I will coming back .

I actually really liked everything we had! Would ideally give this 4.5 because it's not the most incredible thing I've ever eaten but it was all excellent. We sort of did a Russian tapas kinda deal and got all the dumplings + cabbage roll thing. We also tried their strawberry lavender cocktail which was awesome!!

Politics aside, I came back to check out whether Mari Vanna still delivered since I've been last before pandemic closures hit. Good news, they still do! We got veal pelmeny to start. They were not too mushy which can easily happen. We also had blini (crepe) with salmon caviar. Delicious and very nicely thin crepes with just a touch of sweetness. Got the stroganoff with mashed potatoes. Solid although lacked a bit of seasoning. Also tried the Georgian cheese bread (pie) hachapuri with egg. Was very nice airy and very stringy gooey cheesy!! Lastly tried a glass of homemade mors cranberry drink which was delightfully tarty. All in $135. Bit pricy for brunch but you kind of pay for dinner entrees here.

I love the environment of this restaurant so much! The decoration is beautiful. It's my first time to try pirozhki. It is juicy and tasty. The Medovik is sweet but not greasy. There are so many attractive desserts on the menu and I would very love to come again and try more.

This is a fairly good restaurant with good food and atmosphere. The stuff is very rude and unprofessional. Also for $50 bottle I don't expect Chateau, but at least it can taste like a wine.
Be the first to ReplyI like this place.
Good ambiance with classic/eclectic decor. Excellent dishes with top notch service by staff. Pricey, but overall good experience.

We have finally checked out this amazing restaurant and can't wait to come back! Not only is it just so cozy, romantic, relaxing, and adorable .. but their service, drinks and food were stellar!!First of all, did I already mention how perfectly cozy and beautiful they are? We felt right about our dining choice as soon as we walked in! We absolutely loved the ambiance and friendly and professional vibe of their staff. We began with shots of their pepper honey shots- highly, highly recommend!!It was a perfect beginning to what would turn out to be the kind of meal you think about long after you've finished:).Everything from the flavor to the portions to the presentation was exactly what we love!My stroganoff was absolutely heaven for me!! I really appreciate that instead of buttered noodles they use buckwheat!!Also love the way they presented it in the cast iron skillet. It's the kind of place that makes you feel at home but is elevated :)There were enough people there to keep it feeling lovely but it was quiet enough for us to enjoy our delicious meal and we had plenty of space:)This is just perfect for a NYC treat and seems to be in a very old building that probably has a lot of interacting history! It's super cute and fun! Check them out you won't be disappointed..Thank you, Mari Vanna!!Btw- they also support the Ukraine and have ways for us to do so too:)Big props for that too!

Be the first to ReplyIt was okay but I loved the one that was in LA.
Service was good but the food is not really. If you like Kievski kotlet then yes go for it, but in general the place was not really. We went from LA to NY and first thing first was to reserve a table for two in here :) upon arrival the place was full and the host was kind of not happy. Anyways I was expecting more than got

Staff is extremely rude. The decor is cute, but I'd never go again . Do not recommend.

Incredibly boring Brighton beach type dishes at 5 times the price. Wait time for food including salad over 50 minutes. Decor old and outdated. Do yourself a favor and take a train to Brighton or sheepshead and save your nerves and money. Don't recommend to anyone.

This was a recommendation by a friend and it did not disappoint. Very solid food and cocktails, but the restaurant decor and atmosphere was what made the experience special.Medok cocktail This was a new item on the menu and it was delicious! Slightly sweet but not overpowering. Lamb Shank Very large portions and the lamb meat was so tender and falls off the bones! Beef stroganoff The potatoes were creamy and rich, while the meat was perfectly seasoned. Would highly recommend.

Went to Mari Vanna the day after New Year eve to celebrate with my friend. Made a reservation, but upon arrival the front desk lady said we didn't have one! We told her to double check, she finally found our reservation, then she asked for vaccination ( but before making reservation she didn't mention that we need two shots, okay I get it, we made 50% mistake, but still things like this matter, especially on Manhattan, she should of mention that). So, we ended up leaving this place disappointed on New Year's Day.P.S. Not a big fan of negative reviews, but I must say that sometimes restaurants and cafes need more flexibility to its customers.

I went here a little while ago with a group of friends for orthodox Christmas and we had a great time. While we relied on the Russians in our group to order, I enjoyed everything that was put on the table. The food was rich, well priced, and came out quickly. The drinks were strong and tasted good. The only complaint I have is that this random girl (not staff) from the bar kept coming to our table and we clearly were just being polite and didn't want to talk to her but the staff did nothing and didn't kick her out despite multiple tables having this incident with her. However I know that isn't a common occurrence.
Be the first to ReplyI am glad to report that my first Russian/Georgian
I am glad to report that my first Russian/Georgian restaurant experience was at Mari Vanna in NYC. We were a table of 4, and whilst the restaurant was completely packed, the service was not bad and the food was great! One of my favourite parts of the evening had to be the infused vodka; we tried the horseradish -- my favourite, the cranberry as well as the fig. The ambiance of the restaurant was designed to mimic that of a Russian grandmother's home and I think they did a great job at this! The dysfunctional yet warm and colourful decor and attention to detail in this regard throughout the whole establishment was a nice touch. We shared several appetizers and mains; some of my favourites were the 'herring under a fur coat salad', the chicken tapaka (this was so good!!!) beef stroganoff, ajarski style cheese pie (this doesn't look like much but it was also very good) and the pirozhki. Everything is quite rich, heavy and creamy so I was pleasantly surprised to love everything as much as I did. Prices are not cheap, but it is an experience that I was happy to try and encourage everyone to try at least once! Not sure if it was the company or the infused vodka, but we did close the restaurant (as exemplified by the empty restaurant we left behind uin the photo)Overall: 4.5Food: 4.5Service: 4Value: 4Ambiance: 4.5
Be the first to ReplyThis place was lively and packed on a Friday night.
It was more of a clubby restaurant with people standing around the bar and the music was loud. I didn't try any of the food but the drinks were quite good. I tried a couple of the flavored vodka shots, strawberry and orange. I've seen other Russian bars with more vodka shot options but this place had about 8 or 9 you could choose from. Flights came with 5 shots.
Be the first to ReplyA very good russian Restaurant.
I had Chicken Kiev, a Glas of tea, and a piece of Napoleon. Great food, quantaty or quality! The Personal were friendly. The dekorations are finde and very russian...
Be the first to Replyoriginally i had a plan not to relive this experience but
originally i had a plan not to relive this experience but more i get away from it, more upset i get so i have to share. two days ago i took my precious friend for her birthday to mari vanna. i had previously an excellent anniversary meal with my husband there. i wanted to treat my precious friend to a special experience. i was so disappointed. not by the food (it was delicious), not by the ambiance (amazing) but by the poor treatment we had received. upon entering an empty restaurant (4pm thursday afternoon right after they had opened) , we were reminded that there was a 2-hour limit although i had been already told the information twice over the phone. i felt instantly uncomfortable. we were seated and immediately approached by a waitress to rush us with the order. when i asked her for her recommendation, she responded slightly annoyed and she spilled in 10 seconds a list of classic russian meals with no additional information (with a robotic voice). i have been across russia and had so many wonderful meals and was looking for something unique. then the waitress brought our drinks. that was the LAST time we saw her! the food was brought by someone else and i am not going to lie, it was delicious! the entire stay there was no one to check on us, no one to ask us if we wanted another drink or water. the tables around us were attended normally. what brought tears to my eyes now is to read these wonderful reviews from people enjoying their desserts with the staff singing happy birthday to them. my friend did not get any of that. i had to ask another waiter for a dessert menu. they knew it was my friend's birthday (i told them about it over the phone as well as when i was confirming my reservation). i usually do not dwell on bad treatment at the restaurant. i say "oh well" and move on. but this time i really wanted my friend be treated like a queen and instead we felt like second class citizens. i think this was my last time in mari vanna.
