Masa New York Reviews from The Last Year
Great not outstanding
Omakase courses were great but the menu lacks creativity/ innovation or maybe I had really high unrealistic expectations! Service is outstanding, the pairing was ok , we have had same omakase experiences elsewhere with half the price
So rarely do I write reviews.
The price tag on this one warrants my attention. My husband and I dined on a Saturday night at 7:30 at the hinoki counter. Not our first omakase experience - I'm no expert by any means, but I think it's fair to say I know a lot more than the average person about this type of dining. Several things about this were... odd. Dare I say disappointing? Chef Masa was not present. I know there's never a guarantee - but we did specifically book this day/timeslot because it was not one of the listed dates where he would not be there when we were booking the reservation online. Having heard that watching him work is a big part of the experience, we were bummed. Of course we have to be understanding but yeah... bummed. Second, the seating situation was strange. We were seated at the bar and greeted by the chef in the middle of the counter (seemed like the head sushi chef for the night, unclear his actual role). As service started he informed us that he was not our chef and the chef to the side would be serving us. Ok, that's fine - except the center chef and the two people he was serving continued having a LOUD conversation the entire time. Not about the food per se. Distracting and really not Japanese. Between that, the loud random music playing and orders being yelled in from the dining area, it was a lot noisier than I would expect. Didn't feel like fine dining much, to be honest. The quality of the food was good. Generous portions of caviar (as it should be for what you're paying). Everything was well prepared. My main question is - WHY are the nigiri so small? Honestly they are like half the size of what I have been served in omakase meals elsewhere. And it wasn't by our request or because I'm a woman. My husband was served the same small pieces. Not what you want for $1000. Am I glad I had this experience? Yes. Would I go back? Definitely not.
Incredible experience, beautiful interior, delicious meal,
Incredible experience, beautiful interior, delicious meal, and attentive service! Definitely recommend sitting at the chefs table for the best experience. Each dish was put together with an obvious amount of effort and care, and I got to try many foods and flavors I had never had before. The service was phenomenal, with servers constantly ready to pull your chair back, take your jacket, or fill your water. At the end of the meal, our server asked if we wanted to take a picture with Chef Masa (which we did) and they sent us on our way with printed menus of the meal, beautiful cloth napkins, and the wrapped up sake bottle candle from my dessert that I joked about taking. I would absolutely love to come again and highly recommend visiting.
Awful!!
The most disgusting and expensive omakase I ever had… Before the dinner, we were warned that we must not be late, no photos is allowed and we must not to wear strong perfume disturbing others’ senses (written explicitly in the reservation confirmation email!). Otherwise, we would be kicked out from the restaurants. It was a last minute reservation and we were asked to arrive 30 minutes after the reservation time. And we waited another 30 minutes before serving the first dish. The fish was mushy, sushi were served from warm to chilled, serving us from leftover to fish that just defrosted…. Sushi rice wasn’t properly cooked, too wet but hard inside. Indeed, I doubted if those were sushi rice. I don’t think their pickled ginger are home made, they didn’t look nor taste right and they looked and tasted as if stored for some time….the waiters kept disturbing our conservation and insisted to provide unnecessary description of each course…. Awful dinner! The only fortunate thing is that I didn’t get stomache and diarrhea after the dinner….. I think donki’s sushi & sashimi tasted much better! I am a frequent traveller to japan and I am so used to the best restaurants in japan. I was looking forward to masa bcoz I actually heard it’s the world’s best sushi…. Well, it’s definitely the worst that I ever had since I was born…. I wish I could take photos of each of the dishes and tell the world the truth of this restaurant!

Best Sushi in the USA
This is a year-old review. I was there in May 2023. If you love Sushi and can pay the bill. I suggest you go all out. I was in NY for a quick trip. I love sushi so this is a must-try. I'm glad I did. Everything from A to Z, food, and paring of $495 a person was amazing. Appetizers have seven pieces and 19 pieces of sushi courses and of course, it ended with dessert. Every piece was like butter. The champagne to start, sake and wine were the best. It paired well with every piece. By the end of dinner, I was so full. Too bad I couldn't take any pictures because the minute I sat down, the server told me to put the phone away. I would go back next time when I visit NY for sure.

We were excited to dine at Masa in April 2024 and opted for the Hinoki counter experience. We've dined around the world at some of the best sushi restaurants and had high expectations for Masa, especially given the price. Unfortunately, the food and experience did not live up to those expectations. My wife and I placed Masa near the bottom of our list of about 15 3* Michelin restaurants that we've dined at before. We would not return.
Exceptional at every level The food was top shelf as you
Exceptional at every level The food was top shelf as you would expect The service was "special handling" but not overdone at all The counter experience was worth the premium
chef's table review – excellent food in a slightly nontraditional way
Masa was one of the many restaurants on my to-do list and I am glad I was finally able to enjoy a meal there. Before being seated at the chef's table with 10 chairs, we all were explicitly told not take photos. For me, as a food lover, this was really hard, but I respected the chef's wishes. When I asked him kindly if I could take one pic, he pointed at the security camera and laughed. Definitely a clear, humorous way to ask for one's wishes to be respected. Service is impeccable as one would expect from a 3-star restaurant. The staff was nonexistent, until you needed them. Even once the sake bottle was empty a refill on the house was poured to ensure the last bites can be enjoyed like all others. Watching chef Masa prepare the fish was an absolute highlight. Knife skills like I have never seen before. Searing some cuts with a hot iron from the cauldron instead of a torch charred the fish, but did not leave a propane aftertaste. Amazing. While the meal is quite expensive, the amount of food os copious. Not only that, but top of the line ingredients are used. For the "truffle nigiri" the chef shredded a truffle approximately 2 inch in diameter for 4 pieces. A small rice ball was then laced with a little plum sauce and rolled in the truffles. First time for me. Some of the dishes deviate from traditional Edo-style sushi.. While I prefer purely traditional sushi, it is clear that the chef has put a lot of thought on how to elevate it to a 3-star meal. I enjoyed every single bite, with the exception of the uni and papaya. Overall an incredible experience. Will I come back? Not sure. The combination of price point and cringe-worthy folks sitting around me was a bit of a turn-off. And in the Seattle area one can get sushi close to Masa's bar, but definitely not raising above it. Thank you for the nice evening!
Disappointing.
My husband took me to Masa for my birthday last week. Twenty minutes into the experience at the Chef's counter, my husband got VERY sick from a stomach bug (Not from Masa, to be clear). We had to leave to get him home immediately. I was both gravely concerned for his health and also disappointed that I missed out on the dinner. But what made it worse is that the manager explained that there were no refunds or credits per their policy. (Pre-payment is required at point of reservation). So we basically paid almost $2,000 for a meal we ate 1/10 of, if that. Then she added she hoped she'd see us back. Why would we go back? I expected a better, more compassionate level of service from this tier of restaurant. Just....disappointing.
Nothing was spared in creating the food here.
Gastronomical experience not to be missed.
Ok, you will spend a lot of money.
Unlike some other restaurants (like EMP) you know where the money is going and why this meal is special. We also had the saki pairing and extra Wagyu beef. So what if the bill was larger than my mortgage. The smiles on everyone's face and guffaws at the presentation and taste made it more than worthwhile. Oh they don't validate parking and tax and tip are extra
Does not warrant 3 Michelin stars.
I would not go back. Plenty of other omakase in nyc that are as good and not as expensive
Masa: An Absolute Catastrophe
Having eagerly anticipated a meal at Masa, the lone 3-star Michelin restaurant left on my New York list, I envisioned an experience worthy of its prestigious reputation. Priced at $750 per person for the standard omakase, with additional courses at $250 each (which we gladly welcomed), Masa promised not only culinary excellence but also unparalleled service. However, what should have been an exceptional evening turned into a series of disappointments. The ambiance was marred by an out-of-place chorus of "Happy Birthday" songs and a distracting photoshoot at the counter. Mishaps followed, from discovering a hair on one of my plates to the unexpected unavailability of a pre-ordered wine bottle. The most disheartening moment came during the Toro course, where conflicting explanations about its origin cast doubt on the restaurant's integrity. Despite addressing concerns with the Director of Operations, disappointments persisted. Reflecting on my experience at Masa, I couldn't help but question its continued 3-star status. Interestingly, Masa's online presence is obscured on Google, possibly due to similar reviews from dissatisfied patrons. Try Instead: Shuko; Sushi Nakazawa; Juku (currently closed, but pending re-opening); Sushi Ann; seriously even Nobu will have better service and consistent
Awaiting for years to partake in a memorable meal at Masa,
Awaiting for years to partake in a memorable meal at Masa, the last remaining 3-star Michelin restaurant on my New York list, I anticipated an experience worthy of its lofty reputation. With the standard omakase priced at $750 per person and additional courses at $250 each (which we selected with delight), Masa's elevated status promised not just culinary excellence but also unparalleled service. However, what should have been an extraordinary evening turned into a series of disappointments. The ambiance was disrupted by an incongruous chorus of "Happy Birthday" songs, followed by a distracting photoshoot at the counter. Mishaps ensued, from finding an unwelcome hair atop one of my plates to the surprising unavailability of a pre-ordered wine bottle. The most disheartening revelation came during the course featuring Toro, where conflicting explanations about its origin left us questioning the integrity of the restaurant. More specifically - when served the first Toro course and my husband (who I should mention has been to Masa and Japan multiple times) inquired where the fish was coming from - we were told it was from Boston. Very well and the dish was probably the best we had all night. An absolute perfection of fresh wasabi, sticky rice consistency, and, of course, the tuna belly slice. Interestingly enough though - as the next course was served and we inquired of the fish origin - we were told "All the fish is coming from Japan." We were understandably confused and I asked once again where the Toro in the first course was from, "JAPAN" two waiters now uttered almost in unison. Interesting. Additionally, a confrontational encounter regarding photography policies further tarnished the experience. Despite my efforts to address these concerns with the Director of Operations, the disappointments persisted. Reflecting on my evening at Masa, I cannot help but question its continued 3-star status on the Michelin Guide which is becoming less and less relevant by the day and something appearing to be bought by the $750-950 omakase nights. Interestingly enough - MASA is also hidden on Google with the disguise of only Bar Masa (not quite the same restaurant and pricing), as I imagine the reviews were similar to mine from various patrons.

Celebrated my husband's birthday at MASA and got to take a photo with the man behind this exquisite experience. Enjoyed every bite of the meal that was prepared before our eyes by our seasoned chef! Our servers and chef were attentive and efficient. Attention to details to make the meal enjoyable to us stood out the most to me. It's the kind of service that truly deserves 3 Michelin stars. I believe you get the same number of courses if you sit at a table but for an elevated experience get a bar seat. Half way through the meal chef realized that I'm getting full so he made my husband's portions slightly larger than mine, and cut the rice off mine so I can finish the meal as planned. Absolutely loved the dinner we had at MASA and will be back. I wanted to take one star off because I felt like we were a little rushed as they had another seating after us and needed the bar seats, but decided against it because if they pace it you will get full faster.
Wonderful experience.
Booked a 5pm seat at sushi bar and was the only customer for the first 30 mins. Most of the dishes were 5 stars but a few were disappointing, like the lobster. Was it worth $1400 with food and wine? Yes, but I would not do it again. Staff were great and my only complaint was that I was so full at the end of the meal that I thought I would explode.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Masa by
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Masa by enjoying the Hinoki Counter Experience for $950pp. Was it worth the price? For me, no. For my husband, absolutely yes. Masa is my husband's favorite restaurant of any cuisine. He's been there multiple times. My favorite is E by Jose Andres in Las Vegas. E by Jose Andres is over the top, experimental, and bold. Masa is subtle perfection. If you value subtle perfection as much as my husband, then you will love Masa and the price will be worth it. The purpose of the subtle flavors is to maximize the flavor and texture of the fish without overpowering it. At Masa, I've tried unique fish that I have never had anywhere else. Every course was delicious. I don't think I've ever had such fresh fish, either. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely loved Masa. While I understand the price, $950 is a lot. For the $200 price difference of sitting at the bar and watching sushi masters execute your meal with precision vs. enjoying the same meal at a table, I would say pay the $200 difference and make this a true experience. Our sushi chef was outstanding and very friendly. The servers were attentive to the extreme, but it felt a bit intrusive. A single droplet would be wiped up immediately. However, they would switch from side to side constantly and I felt like it took away from the experience a bit. The ambiance was wonderful, but the best view was right in front of us. Everyone at the counter was well-dressed, despite the website stating the dress code is "casual and comfortable." Looking around the restaurant as we were leaving, luckily, I didn't see anyone wearing casual clothes. If it wasn't for the price, I would be back in a heartbeat. Since my husband loved it so much, we will likely be back at some point, anyway.
I love this place.
I don't love that you can't take pictures of the food but I respect it. This is more like the fine dining experience that somehow seems like anyone can do it. Other than the price point, the ambience is laid back and you're supposed to not dress up. The dress code is casual, not formal or business casual. When we got there before it opened, we couldn't find it. The door is part of the wall so unless it's opened, you can't find this place. There are no identifying signs to indicate you're there. Once the door opens, there's an orange curtain with the Masa symbol that invites you in. When you enter, it's this beautiful interior that's black and zen. We went for lunch because it's half the price of dinner and you can sit at the counter. The staff pull the seat for you and when you get up to go to the bathroom, they push the seat in and when you return, they pull the seat out for you. I think they got tired of doing that for me because I got up so many times to go blow my nose haha. Anyways, the food was amazing (how can it not be), they give you this little painting from the mushroom dish that's pre-signed by Masa and the chef from that day. Our chef was Tony. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and had a sense of humor. I asked out of curiosity how often Chef Masa was there and they told me he tries to be there at least every other day. The day we went he was in London setting up another restaurant. So if you go, you may see the wizard himself. The experience is surreal and this is a place I would return to again and again. It's exquisite, it's simple, and it's breaking the rules without being rude.
Highest quality ingredients I have ever seen, this is
Highest quality ingredients I have ever seen, this is probably the peak of seafood and sushi you can get in the US. The roasted sea urchin with truffle was such a magical dish, having incredible umami and creamy flavors. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as it is not really worth the cost of the meal.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
