Out of towner
The restaurant is not for people who cook this type of food at home (like me!). Please be warned that the spice level is high. Best dish: Bhetki fry. Worst dish: Kosha Mangsho. The bhapa doi is anything but.

Great food. Compact menu. Outdoor seating. Papdi chaat, malai kofta were very well made. Will definitely come back to eat when I visit the city.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming
It feels and looks like a family run restaurant and it may be that Iām not particularly familiar with a specific regional cuisine, but the least I can say is that I was underwhelmed by the experience. The chicken vindaloo was as good as any I can make at home with a canned sauce, the paneer in the palak was flavorless and the naan bread was chewy and tasteless. Not recommended.

We stopped for a bite to eat and weren't disappointed. The Tiger prawns, prawn malabar and garlic naan were excellent. The seating is pretty cozy. The staff was very attentive. We didn't have to wait for a table but it quickly filled up shortly after our arrival. We also noticed a lot of carryout customers.

A more charming location and interior would be hard to find. Cute, warm, inviting. Great location on Essex (terminus of Ave A) just below Houston. Maybe 20 small tables. Food was pretty good. Cauliflower dish was best Samosa arrived deconstructed and covered in sauce - penalty! Saag Panner was servicable Chicken vindaloo was good - maybe a llittle bland. Buttered Nan was A+ Trip Advisor says this is 6th best Indian in the city (seems a little high) But very clean, affordable - good not great food. Service was a little ehh. Slow to take our order and then (we were clearly last serving having arrived around 9p) then came to collect the check (which we hadnt asked for) at least 5 times. We were not the last dinners there but still plenty of open tables. I'll happily go back but wont make it a destination.

MasalaWala dons a great atmosphere, a congenial, warm staff, and a large menu full of Asian fusion. Try it.
