Do not take me wrong on the four stars - Masseria is a restaurant with delicious food that will be memorable, particularly their fresh pasta and their foie gras dishes (extra supplement for both foie gras dishes, but worth it for sure). The location is interesting but not very easy to find at first; you fumble through the street to find the small opening into the restaurant's patio and then the door to the bar and dining room - feels like you're entering a house through the pool. Still, I think this bit confers identity to the restaurant overall. The cocktails are interesting, and the food, as I wrote above, is delicious. The tasting menu started with interesting amuse-bouches; the foie gras was delicious, the two pasta dishes were very good and fresh, and the lamb was beautifully plated and tasty. Where a start drops is that there was a 30-minute interval between the last main dish and the dessert that was not even acknowledged. That can happen, of course, but in a restaurant winner of a Michelin star and with a pricey tasting menu, the service, otherwise very friendly, needs to be impeccable, and significant kitchen/service delays should not happen to start with or at least be acknowledged if happening. Ultimately, I recommend the experience, but it is a competitive fine dining environment in DC, and ultimately, details matter.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing dinner! Tasting menu was superb.
Can't say enough good things. Staff was professional, and dishes were well timed.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing! Did not disappoint.
Food, service and ambiance were all perfect. We sat at the table by the kitchen. Highly recommend if you are looking for a special evening in DC.
Be the first to ReplyHad a really nice birthday dinner here.
Agree with another reviewer that the best part was the bread! Other standouts were the burrata and candy to go boxes. I thought the food, environment, and Pace of service was better here than at nearby El Cielo.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent presentation and service.
The wine selection was also great. Food was a totally different story. We upgraded the main course to get a higher end beef cut. DO NOT do that. I will say that we were super appreciative that they compensated us because we did not eat it. Also, we went for the chef's counter experience and that was a mistake- best to not know what is happening back there. The kitchen porter/sous chef (unclear on the role) prepped food and played with her cell phone in between duties without washing her hands for the first 25 minutes we waited and watched. The chef repeatedly wiped sweat without washing his hands for two hours. Four Appetizers presented and only one was worthy of mention. Is this an Italian restaurant????? That is what the website says. Only one dish was remotely "Italian" and it was the worst course. Website says it has a Michelin star....Guessing it is not the same chef that received that accolade. Super disappointed in this extremely overpriced subpar experience. We traveled 5 hours for this and I cannot begin to express how sad I was as a foodie who travels internationally. Hoping D.C. represents with with the other Michelin Starred restaurants we have on the agenda.

The highs were high, and the lows were meh, as in forgettable. Our server was so informative, kind, and attentive. The service, as in the pacing of the dishes and long wait times dampened our dining experience. For starters, getting water at the start of our dining experience was a challenge, took 15 minutes. Was it worth the $1000 we spent on our anniversary din? Sadly, no. What stands out? Truly, what stands out the most is their delicious and fluffy focaccia, topped with veggies, and dipped in tomato sauce. Tastes like pizza!

I stopped by here last night for dinner and drinks at the bar and enjoyed it very much. The bar service was great and I enjoyed the Linguine. The price point is definitely high for what you get but I'm glad I knocked it off my list. The ambiance is very nice and the staff are very professional. This is a great date spot or just a spot come in for a drink and/or dinner solo.
Be the first to ReplyWe had the opportunity to experience the culinary splendor
We had the opportunity to experience the culinary splendor of Chef Nicholas Stefanelli at his restaurant Masseria for my wife's birthday this past October. It was quite the experience, enjoying the six course tasting menu, alongside a bottle of wine and a few cocktails. Ivan, our server, alongside our sommelier Kyle and the rest of the staff were very personable about making us feel welcome at every moment. What stood out first and foremost was their attention to detail. When we arrived to our table, there was a handwritten birthday card for my wife. We started off the evening with two cocktails. While they surely were not cheap, they were some of the best mixed drinks we have ever had. We then ordered an amazing bottle of wine, discussing our palette with Kyle, from our favorite region in Italy to go along with our tasting menu. The focaccia to start was simply divine, almost to the point of tears. We must say that this is one of the best tasting menus that we have ever had in the DC area. Each plate came out thoughtfully curated, like a work of art. Not to mention the Versace plates that the food was served on. What is so nice about Masseria is that it emphasizes how Italian cuisine is more than just pasta. Ivan explained to us how in Italy, pasta is mainly just a mid dish and how meals such as fish and beef are prioritized. This went way beyond the traditional Italian cuisine that we are accustomed to. To finish off the evening, they sent us away with a token gift bag with some great treats. Once you've tried Masseria, you can understand why this place is the #12 best Italian restaurant outside of Italy. We highly recommend Masseria for your next special occasion.

Supplement charge was not reminded by the waiter, and we paid more than doubled by unknowingly selecting alternative dishes for the course. For $178, You can only get a very salty pork as your main course, tasting like grocery store ham. Otherwise, prepare $245 on top of $178 for food only when budgeting, not $178 as advertised. Not worth it!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional food and service.
Overall a bit pricey for the area but the food was memorable. You need to be very hungry the way the menu is set up.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is not even close to a Michelin restaurant.
For an Italian restaurant to botch the pasta dishes I think gives you all the information you need. The interior is very pretty but you quickly forget that when you finish your meal. Most dishes fell flat, no depth to any of them. The only good bites of the night were the oyster and a cheese puff they bring out first. From there it's all downhill. $1400 for 4 people with drinks is crazy when we went to two Josรฉ Andrรฉs restaurants this week and had way better experience for way Better price points. DC has way more to offer no need to waste your time and money.
Be the first to ReplyA great Michelin Star restaurant experience that dabbles
A great Michelin Star restaurant experience that dabbles with seafood. From the initial greeting to departure the service was impeccable. I enjoyed seeing the variety of personnel introducing and explaining the dishes. Being able to watch the chefs prepare the dishes was also a fantastic experience so I highly recommend this option! The low lighting, great music, and their collection of interesting plate ware supplemented the food and the whole experience. Everything tasted great and I felt INCREDIBLY full by the end of the whole course. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyEverything was excellent.
Food, presentation, music, all . But you need to get the wine pairing. Hats OFF to the Sommelier. It made the meal.
Be the first to ReplyCame on a Friday night with a larger group.
Service at the restaurant was top notch and the food was even better. We had the six-course menu and everything we had was fantastic. I have a food allergy and the kitchen was able to make me a substitution for anything that I couldn't have and the staff always made sure to indicate what I could have, and what they were providing me in substitution for another dish. Favorites were the goat six ways and the beef tartare in the second course.
Be the first to ReplyMeh.....I"m sorry but this restaurant is over-rated in
Meh.....I"m sorry but this restaurant is over-rated in every respect; food, atmosphere, wait staff, and pricing. One has to place a deposit for a reservation, which I found very odd but OK. Upon arrival I thought "Hmmm, this is it?" The interior is not stunning or anything one would think of a Michelin rated establishment. After being seated my wife and I also noted the place was pretty loud...not a little...but loud. Now I'm not a snob on this but I thought it was a bit much but let's work with it. Our waiter, who seemed nice enough, spoke under the noise which even more so led to future confusion; what the $*&^ am I ordering? What we tried to establish was if my deposit was Pre Fixe menu or towards the final bill or what? Super confusing for me and my date and apparently others within earshot. This is a problem especially when my final bill arrived for the final WTF of the evening. What!!!???? My bill is twice what I expected!!??? Yeah... suuurrrprise!!! The manager was not helpful "It's on the menu this is extra" BUT YOUR WAITER nor MENU EXPLAINED HOW your pricing worked!!! Nope. Sorry. Service was mediocre, atmosphere was nothing special and the food, while interesting to watch the cooks/chef hustle, was not worth dropping a grand. I don't mind dropping the cash but I expect a lot more than this.
Be the first to ReplyDespite its Michelin rating, I would never recommend this
Despite its Michelin rating, I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. The atmosphere was loud, the wait staff were much too busy, and most of all the confusion with the menu led to a bill which should have been $600, but when I received my credit card bill was actually $1300. Because of the initial deposit to get a reservation, we thought, as well as the couple next to us, that this meant a certain basic menu. It did not! Even though we asked our waiter repeatedly about the menu, pricing, and what came with our Initial deposit as it were, it was extremely confusing and unclear how this restaurant worked. A month later, when I received my credit card bill and called the manager regarding it it was then I recognized how this restaurant worked. Apparently because we chose a truffle option, Which we were not aware was an option as our waiter did not in the least bit explain anything other than what would you like, this added over $500 to the price. Again, this, in addition to the atmosphere, the waiter, and the entire experience, that may be slightly above average for the DC area, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I know the couple next to us that left, seemed furious, and had an extended discussion with the waiter. Now I know what that discussion was about. And the bill as I received it did not show it clearly what my final total was. Little did I know that it would add on to my initial deposit not be deducted from the deposit on my credit card as a credit. We certainly will never go back to it. And by the way, this was for my wife's birthday being from New York City thought the restaurant average at best, and after me explaining the credit card situation and the manager's reaction, was upset that I had to go through this on that special day.
Be the first to ReplyBEWARE!!! The food was good.
The wait service not so much. The waiter at first seemed very friendly and interested in us enjoying our evening. But as he went on to explain the menu and ordering process he became inconvenienced at us asking questions. The menu has a right side and a left side which several patrons had questions about. The more we asked for clarification the more visibly annoyed he got. But nonetheless we ordered. Once the food was being served he came back offering truffle shavings with a big smile. What a nice touch. NOT! All these little shaving added several hundred $$$ to our meal and in the end we were not impressed with the pompous act or the food for that matter. It was just good food. Not blow my socks off great. The many times we have been to Italy... this restaurant paled in comparison to the authenticity of true delicious Italian food and great service.
Be the first to ReplyMasseria has been on my list for a long time and I'm sad to
Masseria has been on my list for a long time and I'm sad to report that it was not worth the wait. Bottom line- disappointing food quality for the price and the service was slow. Save your funds for other tasting menus in the city. We decided to make a pre-paid reservation for the 6 course tasting menu for my husband's birthday on a Saturday night. We arrived a little early but they told us our table was ready and therefore we were sat. The ambience was very nice. However we ultimately spent a lot of time waiting between courses. Despite sitting down at 8:05, we didn't get any actual food until like 8:50. The bread course was first, completely forgettable and dare I say stale. The small plates were decent, but none stood out in particular. The plating was lovely though. The pasta courses were probably the highlight of the meal but again, nothing that I would come back for. The main entree was off-putting- it was goat 5 ways. Goat is hard enough to get right in a single iteration, 5 feels very ambitious. Lastly the desert was just okay. I agree with other commenters about the pushy add-on menu. I know a lot of tasting and set course menus offer additions but this was an aggressive level of upsell for what was already a very expensive meal. Plus everything just took so long to come out, they did acknowledge that the kitchen was running behind and provided us champagne to compensate- that was a nice touch.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food and atmosphere.
Each plate is presented as artwork. Attentive service with a lovely gift bag at the end. They made our anniversary very special.

Love this place for drinks!!! Elegant, romantic atmosphere for date night or girl night out. Call ahead. Get ready to let that money flow!
Be the first to ReplyWay too expensive for what it is.
We did the 6 course tasting menu experience because that was the only option. There were a couple small bites that were good- including the small bread with cheese in the middle and the oyster with caviar. But the rest was ok. The risotto was undercooked and served with a dry, bland piece of toast. The experience is awkward because they thrust a large expensive menu of additions at you right when you arrive (when the tasting is already expensive as is), but then you aren't told what the courses will be. Overall, we were not excited with the food and then hit with over $800 bill for a dinner for 2 and it was painful.
Be the first to ReplyUpdating my review since it's been a while and I visited
Updating my review since it's been a while and I visited recently. Stopped in for the tasting menu at the chefs counter. Pretty average food, and at this price point it's just not for me - there are many other one stars in dc with more memorable food and service, and most for less $. Let's start with service - almost immediately we knew it wouldn't be for us, our server started off pushy with cocktails, giving us what felt like one minute to browse the menu before recommending specific one and asking if we'd like to order them..while I appreciate recommendations, I can read the menu and make a decision on my own thanks. When my partner said he didn't want a cocktail, the server took his drink menu and that was that - he had picked out a wine he wanted to try but I guess that didn't matter as the guy sped off. He also assured me that I'd be sent a copy of the menu when he saw me taking notes, saying I didn't have to do that and making me feel uncomfortable for doing so (I like taking notes, I realize I don't have to do this during a meal lol) - and still haven't received that menu. Little things like this on top of overall just making us feel like we were a nuisance, over-explaining things with what we felt was a general condescending tone during every interaction as if were new to fine dining - far from it. For the dining experience - some good bites, some average, and others very bad. I can't remember the last time I've sent back almost a full course of a tasting menu - we typically finish everything + add ons, but we really did not care for two of the courses. Cocktail was good. Amuse bouche was fine but not memorable. The bread service was ok with the exception of the savory parm filled bombolini which was delicious. The burrata with oyster and caviar was very nice. Then we move on to some bigger plates - sheeps milk ricotta with vegetables was fine, turbot with heirloom tomatoes had a nice consommรฉ, risotto with truffles was rich and tasty (although doesn't touch the similar dish served at jont), XO pasta is one of their classics although this was like a 2.5 bite portion, ravioli with chanterelles was pretty good. Foienoli is fun. Then we got two the two main entrees - one was a large portion of sweetbreads, served with charred broccolini. The combo of sweetbread flavor + this burnt broccoli with a smoky sauce and broccoli purรฉe destroyed my palette - I couldn't eat more than a couple bites, it was that bad. My partner was drinking water after his bites to get it down. One of the worst courses I've had on any tasting menu to date. Next was a Guinea fowl - had a bunch of components on the plate that were all over the place with no flavors complimenting each other. The bird was pounded thin and pretty dry. The jus needed work, the shio koji was too sweet and did nothing for the plate, the poached plums were a random unwelcome addition. Lacking a clear vision and lots of execution. Next was the palette cleanser, with a candy tuile that was too thick and wouldn't break, and then got stuck in your teeth - not sure who signed off on that one. The final dessert course was a plate of apricot in different forms - cake, puree, brittle, ice cream. This was ok but didn't blow me away. We also opted for a cheese course, ordered and paid for 5 but was given 3 - by that point we didn't want to raise a stink, we just wanted the meal to end. Cheese course is an afterthought, served with slices of bread, a jam and some walnuts, and the three we had weren't anything special. And if that wasn't enough, we saw multiple bugs on the counter during our meal. The first was a decent sized cockroach that ran across the counter and hid under the water bottle. Being that food prep is just on the other side of the counter, this is pretty gross, and again not something I've seen at 50+ other Michelin restaurants. The second was a smaller one that I took care of myself. Sitting at the counter also wasn't particularly enjoyable - the chairs are uncomfortable and the kitchen staff never looked happy to be there (there was good lighting though). The space between courses can be long, so this meal of 8 courses dragged out to 2.5 hours without any pairings. For $700+ I expect a bit higher quality of food, service, and atmosphere. Also, selling masseria branded candles in the bathroom disguised as art is pretty tacky.

Great ambience, impeccable service, beautiful presentation and delectable cuisine. We had the tasting menu and every dishes were great experiences to my palate.

Went there in August 2021 for anniversary. I don't know what I should say about this place, nothing really stood out for me, except for two super salty dishes (I believe it was the beef tripe and the pasta), the service was SLOWWWWW. I'm talking about Flash (the sloth in Zootopia) kinda SLOWWWWWW. The whole dinner took more than 4 hours. By the time we left, even the garage was closed. Luckily, we had a resident opening the door for us. The overall experience was really just meh...To me, it doesn't worth a second visit.
Be the first to ReplyHad been on my list for a bit.
Excellent service and cute atmosphere. However, the food was pretty underwhelming. Bread course was worthless. Whatever that tomato paste spread was...was not the vibe. The raw seafood course, yummy but not memorable. The savory flan was an herbal egg salad...did not make sense. The pasta was good. But you can definitely do better elsewhere like the red hen. The fish and duck courses were just fine. And have my fruit pies over their apricot tart any day. This place is a definite skip.
