For many, many years, Mastros Ocean Club in Malibu has been our "go to" place for birthdays and anniversaries, or just a nice night out, but the quality of the food and service has taken a deep plunge since the pandemic. We hoped it would pass, and have celebrated our last few special events at CUT in Beverly HIlls instead, to give Mastros a chance to get back up to their usual level of excellence. Tonight, our family went back to Mastros to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary. It was a mistake. The problems started the moment we walked in. The place was mobbed, and only one hostess was on duty and seemed utterly overwhelmed. The waiting area was stuffed with people. Clearly, staffing and organization was an issue. We were led to our table... not the one we'd requested in our reservation (or even in the same part of the restaurant we asked for). In fact, it was where we specifically asked NOT to be. Alas, they told us they had no other available tables. The waiter asked if we wanted the bread basket. We told him we did, but only the sourdough and cheesebread...not the pretzel bread. Usually, when we ask for this, we get extra sourdough or cheesebread to make up for it. So what did we get? A basket with pretzel bread. When we mentioned this, he took the pretzel bread out, stuck it in another basket, and gave us the our basket. The sourdough was hard and dry...and the cheesebread was so cold, we wondered if perhaps it had just been taken out of the refrigerator. When our menus came, we opened them up, and CRUMBS DRIBBLED OUT! It was disgusting. For God's sake, open the menus and shake the crumbs out before giving them to your diners. We ordered our food... I asked for my steak medium, and my wife asked for dijon mustard with hers. When our steaks arrived, hers was delivered without the mustard and mine was medium RARE. I sent my steak back. In the meantime, our sidedishes came, scalding hot -- which is fine and expected. Except the waiters just left the pans on our table -- they didn't serve us our initial portions, like they usually do. So we served ourselves, but I burned myself doing it. My family continued eating while I waited for my steak (my wife had to ask two more times for her mustard, btw). Meanwhile, my daughter had to keep telling waiters not take our butter away (I guess because we were finished with the bread, they couldn't comprehend why we might want to keep the butter), Why were they so intent on taking the butter? They tried three more times to take it away. Was the butter putting us in danger? Was there a desperate need for our butter back in the kitchen? I finally had to say "Go away. Leave the butter alone." The waitress came back with my steak... which was overcooked and flavorless. The seasoning was seared right off...so it was a good thng I had the butter to melt on top! I've had bad service at Mastros before, but this was the first time I've ever had a bad steak. She came back a few minutes later and asked me how it was -- I lied, and said it was fine, because i didn't want to kill the celebration by making a scene out of this (though both my wife and daughter commented on how bad the service has become). On top of that, all the waiters seemed to have stained clothes, crooked ties, or misbuttoned or ill-fitting coats. Our daughter even joked that they must want to save money here on dry cleaning. Not a good look for a supposedly high-end restaurant. This isn't Bobby's diner. I know the wait staff gets dirty, of course, but come on, this is supposed to be a high-end, elegant steak-house restaurant -- give the waiters/waitresses clean shirts or fresh aprons when they stain themselves...and give them coats that fit...and ties that are straight! The place just doesn't seem special or elegant any more. It feels like a steak conveyor belt. If this had not been our anniversary, but just a nice dinner out, I would have demanded to see the manager and complained about how bad things have become. Instead, not wanting to ruin our special night, I waited until we got home, and everyone was in bed, to sent this review. It's sad to see how far this Mastros has fallen (I've dined since the pandemic at Mastros in NYC and it was great in every way). We'll be going back to CUT for our special occasions from now on.

Came here for a birthday celebration around 8pm.
I'm sure the view would have been pretty, but it was pitch black. We asked for a window seat, but still a table away, so you couldn't see any waves crashing down below. Now, as for the food, we got the bread service, off menu Dungeness crab cocktail, Cesar salad, New York strip, truffle mushrooms, and butter cake. Bread was delicious, loved the assortment of bread. The Dungeness crab cocktail, aka rich man's fries, delicious, cocktail sauce was anything special, but still good. New York strip was cooked at a good medium rare, but slightly above average tasting. Mushrooms were good, but nothing special again. Many different cocktails to choose from, but they were subpar. Our waiter was great though and even exchange my drink that wasn't good for a different one, but even the next drink was okay. Honestly, for the price, the food was pretty average, could've made it at home with effort. I know you pay for the ambiance, but it was dark and we were in a crowded little corner, so I'm solely basing that 3/5 star on food. Only thing worth the price was the bread and butter cake. I'd come back for that.Note, we dresses up, which was fun. But for those that are worried, we saw people in gym-wear, sneakers, sweaters. So it's not that strict for those who are worried about their "strict" dress-code, but again this was the Malibu location.
😍
Went last Saturday and Rich was our server.
He was attentive and friendly. Everything was perfect from the heirloom salad, to the porterhouse, and of course the buttercake. Staff were helpful but Rich made the night.
I requested a table next to the window for my birthday celebration but instead received a table in the corner over looking the parking lot - 2 stars for this awful view. The corner table was comfortable but the noise factor was terrible - it was so loud in the restaurant, couldn't hear my own conversation. The bread basket is well worth the $5- the pretzel bread, sourdough and other bread was a great choice- and the butter was softened to my liking! Ordered the tuna tartar- excellent! The main course was the bone in Filet, New York Strip -prepared perfectly medium rare. Sides were Brussels sprouts, garlic mashed potatoes, sautéed asparagus, Mac and cheese. French fries were not crisp (boo), I asked for tartar sauce as a dip and never received it. We had a birthday celebration and Mastro's delivered complimentary cheesecake. 5 stars for food.Service was good/ although they took a long time to refill our water glasses but of course the bottles of wine came out quickly. 4 stars.
The meat is fantastic snd have never had better shrimp cocktail. In fact no other has even come close.

The Penthouse at Mastro's is a high-end steakhouse with breathtaking views of the city. The steak was some of the best I've ever had, and the sides were delicious. The service was exceptional, and the ambiance was elegant and sophisticated.

By far the nicest location compared to Beverly Hills and Agoura Hills however location is very small. It's Malibu so it's as expected since it's really right on the water. If you don't like steak there's other seafood option but you shouldn't eat here without trying steak. We started with calamari and the tartar. We were a party of 7 so we got 3 large bone-in ribeyes to share. Presentation is perfect. Steaks already sliced, we also added the different butters (truffle, wagyu, and bone marrow) for an additional cost but definitely adds another level of perfection. Add the family style sides, lobster mashed potatoes are pricey for a side but so worth it. We also ordered asparagus and brussel sprouts. Service and food was exceptional. Definitely a special celebration kinda restaurant.
😍
This Maestro's location knocks it out of the park.
It is by far the best restaurant bar none. While I have enjoyed it for several years; the food, drinks, staff, bar, all of it is incredible on this particular night the course history was changed. My boyfriend proposed to me here. We are the most incredible dinner and afterwords walked on the beach. (we had a scale, some rocks to get onto the sand - probably not advised) he got down on one knee and presented the rock. Everybody in the restaurant was banging on the windows in joy for us. But seriously, the bar is always jumping. It is LA chic. Come dressed to kill.

Figured it'd be helpful to post an updated review as I've been dining here since 2017.I'm guessing that you have been reading the reviews during the post-COVID era and even a top-tier restaurant like Mastro's understandably had some tough times. My first time dining here post-COVID was in March of 2022. That time, the service was great, but the food did seem a bit off in terms of the drinks and the steaks. Like the steaks were not cooked properly(too rare, too tough) and the drink(lemon drop martinis) felt like it was missing something.Fast forward to March 2023 as me and the lady had dinner here recently to celebrate my birthday and our one year anniversary(tied to the same date). I can confirm that the food and drinks are back to the way they were pre-COVID with it being on point!Kudos to the new kitchen staff and wait staff for making our anniversary memorable. My ribeye was cooked perfectly at medium-rare while being tender and juicy with delicious marbling. The warm butter cake along with the complimentary cheesecake was a perfect way to close out the anniversary/birthday dinner.Thank you again for another wonderful night Mastro's. Keep up the great work as we will be returning to celebrate another life event here.
😍
Was so romantic , loved the food and atmosphere.
There was a live musician who played throughout the night which was a nice touch. I got the branzino whilst my husband got sea bass. Both were cooked to perfection. We also got sides such as mashed potatoes, fries, and mac & cheese. They were good just the mashed potatoes were lacking flavor. Breadbasket was 10/10 with the side of butter absolutely delicious. We asked the bartender for a recommendation on a mojito and he ended up with his own mix. So good it was a mango mojito with mint 200/10! Loved this place.

A bit pricey (lunch was $500 including tip for 3 people) but very well worth every dollar. You just can’t beat the view, the food is the best in class and the service elevates the experience. Excellent!
🤮
HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SEATING: Our party of 9 was squeezed into a table that would have been tight for 8. The table had an extension which was lower than the main table. The room was VERY crowded and dangerous – can’t believe a Fire Marshall wouldn’t have closed down the place. SERVICE: Totally inattentive. Never once asked if I wanted a refill of my soda water. Ordered my wife a Sombrero (Kaluha and cream) – he had no idea what it was and brought it out wrong – then argued with me. Ordered two birthday desserts – brought the desserts, extra spoons but no extra plates. Never offered us coffee. FOOD: The Calamari appetizer and mushroom side were great. The shrimp cocktail – served in ice but the shrimp were just about room temperature. The filet was tender but no flavor. The bone-in ribeye flavorful but extremely tough – almost inedible. Mac and cheese nothing special. VALET: $15!!! It was 48 degrees out but they couldn’t get the heater to work!
We had dinner at Mastro‘s Ocean Club in Malibu, California on November 13th to celebrate a birthday. We had been looking forward to it for a while. The service and atmosphere did not disappoint. The food was great initially too, until two people in our party got "violently ill" and two others got mildly ill. We have been trying to figure out which dishes could have caused it. Was it the side dishes (spinach, mushrooms, potatoes) or the Wagu steak, the filet, the Chilean Seabass, ??? We called Mastros Ocean Club the next day in hopes of finding the culprit. I spoke to Britnae who claimed nobody else had called in with such a complaint. She offered us a $100 credit on our $800+ dinner. Not considering this a fair solution due to the severe effects suffered that evening, we asked her to elevate this complaint to their top management (something I have never had to ask before)! After not hearing back from Britnae after 2 weeks, I called and left a voicemail. It's now 3 weeks since we spoke to her and were promised a follow up and she has not returned my phone call...so disappointing! One of the guests who became violently ill was barely able to make it home in time to avoid pulling over to vomit on the roadside. Another guest was up all night with diarrhea and vomiting. The other two guests had stomach aches for the remainder of the evening. Even into the beginning of the next day nobody felt normal. This had to have been food poisoning. Almost as awful as the food poisoning is the silence from Mastro’s Ocean Club! As I said, Britnae promised to follow up with us but never did and has not even returned my follow up phone call. We have been coming to this restaurant for special occasions for years but after this experience we will definitely be forgoing it in the future.

What a huge disappointment! The steaks were either tough or served cold. It took more than hour to receive our second course after the first course. Even the parmesan crisps were cold and rubbery. I have eaten at Mastros restaurants for many years and this restaurant was memorable for all the wrong reasons. We will not return.

Amazing Dining Experience
I was invited by a vendor to attend a dinner here. The view is stunning of the ocean while we dined, and the piano entertainment has an absolute amazing voice. The waitress was incredibly knowledgable with the menu and made some off-menu recommendations. We had the calamari, mac and cheese and tuna appetizers. I wished I could have had the mac and cheese. It looked absolutely out of this world and the table said it was tasty but I cannot do cheese. I had the grilled sea bass, which was out of this world. The table ordered several sides, with the garlic mashed potatoes which were tasty, as well as the creamed spinach dish and sauteéd asparagus. For dessert we had their signature warm butter cake which was so tasty I wanted to order one to go. The dining atmosphere is amazing and the service and wait staff are top-notch. We will definitely be back!

Could Not Have Been Better!
Booked a reservation for last Saturday evening, party of six, to celebrate my wife's birthday. Had to be the BEST table in the house. Back of the restaurant, right along the window. Fantastic view! The ocean is twenty feet away! Everyone was in awe. Service was impeccable, and the food & beverage was amazing. Our server was (I believe) Anna. She was AMAZING! Friendly, knowledgeable, expert in her craft, gorgeous and patient. We are still talking about her two days later. Just the best. Everything from arrival to departure was flawless. Thank you Mastro's for an UNFORGETTABLE evening! We WILL be back.
Awesome seafood restaurant located in Malibu overlooking the ocean, beautiful view specially at sunset, specious, elegant, suitable for large group or special occasions. We have ordered entrée, soup, salad, main course all sea food and sweet, it's was perfectly cooked and presented so delicious. Professional service, helpful and friendly. All staff were well dressed. Mid to high price. Highly recommended

Our favorite place to eat for special occasions. Amazing location, impeccable service, best steaks on the planet. We love it.
😍
Nice experience in a very tiring day.
I went for lunch without reservation around 2.45 pm. We had no reservation it was me and my aunt. Both tired of unbelievable and draining traffic along the coast highway. We could not find parking anywhere near we originally were planning to go. We arrived tired and very hungry. Thanks to Anastasia the front hostess she was king to seat us. The food was great and the ambiance was super nice.
😍
Good luck finishing your food here.
Come hungry! First off the bread basket is amazing and has so much variety. This alone will spoil your meal. The smoking seafood tower is a revelation and a MUST. Lobster bisque is divine. Lobster mash potatoes are so rich they will end you. Chefs cut of the ribeye is as big as your head and at this point in the meal you're not hungry any more and just shoving the food down because it tastes good. The butter cake alone is reason to come here. Life changing. To top it off the views are incredible and the staff is top notch. Classic LA steakhouse experience.
🤮

We had the worst dining experience here for my father-in-law's 73rd birthday. I left detailed feedback on The Landry's website and never heard back. So I'll simply leave this giant black hair that was embedded in my blue cheese stuffed olive as a warning for anyone else considering this establishment for your loved one's special day. Also, avoid the blonde dollar-store Candice Swanepoel hostess at all costs. She's as rude as she is incompetent.
🙂
Dinner was delicious, the location is great, and our server
Dinner was delicious, the location is great, and our server was attentive and funny. Only complain was that the dress code was not enforced. Multiple people were in streetwear, graphic tees, and lounge shorts. I don't mind, but what's the point of a dress code? Overall, still a nice experience and would recommend.
😒
Honestly I had a decent time here.
Wish I could give 3 half stars. My bf and I had dinner reservations at 7:30, we came at 7:15 and we were seated pretty promptly. The only tables available when making the reservation were the high tops near the bar. We came here on a Saturday night so it was extremely busy, very poppin with live music and the sunset was beautiful = amazing views. 15 $ to valet your car or you can find street parking. We started off w bread service (took awhile) and tuna tartare for appetizers. Tuna tartare was very delicious, fresh tasting and nice crunch with great presentation. Second course we had the lobster bisque which we split. Honestly it was okay, it was extremely salty and we both didn't finish it but it was in between complaining and just dealing with it. Still decent! We ordered the lobster tail MP was $125 and the lamb chops MP $75. Now once again all decent! The lambchomps were great in temperature not over cooked very juicy but on the saltier side. My lobster was tough over cooked on the top but middle was fine. It was also 14 oz! Huge tail! Service points for the de-shelling. We also had sautéed asparagus which I thought needed some lemon and salt (only thing not salty). So all in all a decent meal but for the price I thought I could have had a better meal experience. The service was fine our server jasmine had great personality and times everything just fine- the ambience was perfect. I usually order the butter cake but we were so full from drinking so much water from the saltiness we decide to skip dessert. Just skip the lobster bisque and lamb chops or ask for it less salty and I think you'd enjoy your experience!!
🙂
We ordered Lobster bisque - high recommended! Clams chowder
We ordered Lobster bisque - high recommended! Clams chowder - above average not much surpriseFresh oysters - love it! Must try if you love oysters they are truly fresh!Lobster mashed potatoes - good, stuffed and do have a lot of lobster for you to dig around. Sea scallops- love every piece of it. I would ask for veggies instead of 3 slices of breads as we already have whole basket of bread to begin with.Last and that's totally disappointed the king salmon, we have like 2 bites and have them take it away. Just go with other than salmon if I would suggest.Thx!
