Always a great experience
The Martinis are amazing, the Food is wonderful and the service is great! Mastros always provides a great experience. We really like the atmosphere and we sat at the bar.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service, food and atmosphere!
We had an amazing birthday dinner here tonight! Our server, Betsy, and her table side partner Edwin were both absolutely perfect! From the food to the service to the live background music, the night couldn’t have been better!! And when you think you’re full and can’t eat anymore, you must still have their signature butter cake. You’ll find room for it.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed, its just not the same
Having been fans of Mastros for 25 plus years, it is definitely slipping. We have noticed it has slowly slipped sense Landrys bought them a few years ago. We were a party of 3 couples. The table was set next to entrance to kitchen so it was loud and bumping into shoulders of the person sitting on that side of aisle. Caesar salad was nothing special and did not seem fresh. Ordered 3 shrimp cocktails at $30 a piece and it came with small dish with about one spoonful of cocktail sauce for 12 shrimps. Had to ask for the horseradish that it normally comes with and extra sauce. Service was not the same for sure. I had halibut which was dry to me. Mashed potatoes were very thin and runny and tasted more like instant. People who had the steaks said they were still good. We have had the same dishes before over the years and definitely not the same. This location seems to become more of a bar and scene than a great restaurant. It’s a shame. Hoping the original owners of Mastro’s who will be opening steak 48 in Newport fashion island will bring back the original amazing food and service. I will say the Costa Mesa location was better than Newport but still noticeable downward change. For a dinner that averages around $150 plus per person it is disappointing.

Wanted to take our friends from London to the Newport Ocean Club for their last night here. It was our first time here... and our last. Beautiful place, and we had a great table next to the window with a great sunset view. Ordered Filets - 3 8oz's medium rare and one 12oz rare, garlic mashed and asparagus to share. Waiter brought us 2 8oz's, 1 12oz, and a piece of burnt shoe leather on a plate. Waiter told us that's what she wrote down for our order..told her she was wrong, and returned the burnt leather for an 8oz medium rare, and had to wait for it while the rest of us ate. Our friends were not impressed, especially since he was the one with the burnt leather. Mashed potatoes were worse than KFC! Embarrassment # 2. Asparagus was way over done. Waitress apologized for everything and gave us a free dessert.. yippie! Oh yea.. the coffee was luke warm. As expensive as this place is, you think they would get it right... But No.
Be the first to ReplyBad attitude
Not friendly or accommodating. Stopped in for a drink and we were turned away. Bar was empty. We asked to sit a one of the empty tables and were refused. Have had nice dinners here in the past and very dissatisfied at the attitude of the staff.
Be the first to Replypretty embarassing.
There was a hair in my mashed potatoes. I was absolutely disgusted and repulsed. When asking for another dish, I was riducled by our waiter and called a "piece of ****". When asking for the manager, it was refused. My girlfriend and I got up and left. I will never be visiting here ever again. I can recall the waiters name starting with a J.

First off this is an expensive place to dine. For that, things should be treated as such. We always love the pretzel rolls to start and they did not disappoint. Shrimp cocktail was outstanding. Steaks were very good, not great. Service was disappointing. No forks when the steak came, kept having to ask for water, etc. Plus they kept moving chairs around by a door where we were seated. Not good and inexcusable. I don’t know. And what is up with them not being part of Landry’s Select Club. Either you are a part of Landry’s or you are not. That’s a scam. Marche Moderne in the same shopping area absolutely blows it away.
Be the first to ReplySilly little Tower, you are a plate...
I have been here multiple times and we have always loved it...except this time. The people as usual were great, but the food we have come to look forward to...not so much. Ordered the seafood tower, LOL, more like a plate and not a very good one. It used to be a loaded 2 or 3 tiered tree of awesomeness...it is now a plate of "ah not so much" we ordered everything we could to put on this thing except for the crab legs (get to that later), there was more ice being covered on this "plate" by random wilted seaweed and oversized capers. The lobster seemed to be cooked, frozen, reheated, chilled for a week and shriveled up like an old ladies hand. We tried to tough through it and eat what we could like seagulls, but we ultimately complained about it, were told it would be removed from the bill (it wasn't). The random 3 shrimp were obviously old also, oysters (which we were told were the flavorful plump ones) were bland and seemed to be on some OC diet plan. The crab cocktail was the highlight-ish, but that obviously wasn't fresh either. Just a sad plate..Not a Tower (unless there was an earthquake and it fell). There were four of us we each ordered our own main and split 3 sides. Crab legs, used to be large or colossal, now skinny legs like a model with an eating disorder. Roasted Chicken, yes I know why chicken here, sometimes kids want what they want, this was dry and not very flavorful (good news, they kept refilling our water). Filet Mignon, was cooked well (as in good), but was like they put a slight sear on it and finished it in the microwave without salt and pepper at least. Rack of lamb, appeared that they forgot the sear and dropped it into a 30 minute sous video and left it half seasoned. Our sides, macaroni and cheese (bland), sautéed asparagus more like sautéed garlic and some boiled asparagus, and the French fries...were awesome and tasted the best of the whole night. Now, it's not all complaints, the bread basket was very good, especially the hot pretzel bread! We spent over $750 on disappointment. The funny thing is that we were all trying to be polite and not complain, but once we got in the car we all opened up...we were trying not to ruin the purpose for us being there a birthday dinner. Not sure if Mastro's is another victim of today's environment, but we definitely feel we were victims of bait and switch...so sad
Be the first to ReplyPerfect for weekend night out
I always hit up Mastros before hitting the clubs in OC. The food is delicious and many beautiful people. I always order the ribeye medium rare, my go to dish. So if your coming from out of town this is definitely a place to visit.
Be the first to ReplyAFTER MANY YEAR COMING HERE, STILL MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS!
I stated "favorite restaurant for special occasions" only because I live an hour away up north in Rolling Hills. My wife & I come here on occasion & every anniversary; now on 26th. We always get the table we request and are grateful. We realize "the regulars" in Newport Coast should receive better treatment, so I'm always happy when our requests are met. There is a patron hierarchy at any high end restaurant.
My wife generally gets the sea bass or king crab legs. I always get the bone-in rib eye from regular cut, chef's cut to Tomahawk, and the best mac n cheese ever. We love the wine list. Everything is great from start to finish from the venue, service and food, and why I always give them five stars.
This time was almost perfect as well. As a business owner, I like constructive criticism from my customers when my employees could do better. These remarks are just directed to the manager if he feels the same as I do. Generally, the hostess and waitress know it's our anniversary; hostess did not waitress. Not a big deal but prior times it was nice when it happened from both dept's. My wife ordered steamed Alaskan king crab legs (you can order them chilled). The server brought her the plate hot but crab legs cold (needless to say she only ate half). When serving my steak, he notified me of the hot plate but forgot to tell my wife who was serviced first. She burnt her hand moving the plate, expecting the plate to be room temp but crab hot. Would've liked waitress to hit table more often for us to order more wine. Lastly, the comped $6 cheesecake slice was nice but not eaten. Prior to the Cerveza Sickness, the awesome $19 butter cake was comped for special occasions. I recognize their reasoning now not to include it, but nobody really wants the slice of cheesecake when their other desserts are far better. I wish they could make a smaller portion of the butter cake to justify the comp, bc it is that good.
This is just my criticism that I'd like to see changed but by no means reasons to not still give them five stars. Every time prior these issues never occurred. If your visiting or live in So Cal, this is a must place to dine; they have the best steaks, venue and service.
Holiday Celebration Dinner
Our family dines here often and had my birthday party there in May.
To start off I received a voicemail at 3:20 telling me there was no power until 10pm so they were closing. It was our only night to do this because of family logistics and I had made the reservation weeks ago.
My husband and 2 daughters spent an hour calling every restaurant in the area and finally at 4:15 we heard from one of the restaurants that we called that power was back on and Mastros was open. We finally got through and wre told reservation back on but I certainly would have expected a phone call telling me so for party of 8.
We were seated as soon as we arrived but I had asked weeks ago as usual to be seated in Paige’s section and we were right next to it.
I brought 2 bottles of champagne to celebrate with 4 of our daughters and 2 son in laws. We were seated 20 minutes with champagne sitting on table before the server came to the table.
As I said we eat at this location fairly often and the service the entire meal was nothing like the usual standard.
The food was excellent as always!!!!
Wonderful ambiance, excellent service and very expensive!!
We went there as we were staying nearby on vacation and were able to get a table with a water view. We went on a Monday night when they first opened and by the time we left an hour and a half later, the place was jam packed. It certainly seemed like the place to be seen. Our server Kimberly and the support staff did a great job of being attention and punctual. We had the Chilean Sea Bass and Big Eye Tuna, and we not disappointed. The huge sides of Creamed Spinach and Garlic Mashed Potatoes were so good! We had sticker shock on the prices of drinks. A bottle of Rombauer Chardonnay was $96. (the price was listed in two different places with a $6 difference) and 200 % markup. The Johnny Walker Black, Red and Dewars were all $16 which blows my mind since the Black is the most expensive and the Dewars is the cheapest. The Black may be worth the $16 but certainly not the Dewars.
It was a special night and really enjoyed it..but very expensive, especially the drinks.
Nothing Special with a Few Missteps
Friends took me to this restaurant when I recently visited them.
Let's start with the posted dress code: I assume that it is only for those who wish to comply. All others just strolled in as they were, regardless.
I started my meal with the Lobster Bisque. While tasty, it was upsetting that I had to sink the hardened skin that had formed on the top of the soup. I was also hard-pressed to find any decent size pieces of lobster. If I were alone, I certainly would have sent it back.
My friend had eaten there a couple of weeks earlier and mentioned that she enjoyed the shrimp. Based on her recommendation, we both ordered them. They turned out to be salty and garlicy. Edible but disappointing. We had the Brussel Sprout side. I am a good home cook and I know that if the sizes of the sprouts range from dime to egg size, some will be overcooked, and others undercooked. And that's exactly what happened.
What can I say - let's lay all blame at the after effects of the pandemic. Standards were cut left and right and they are certainly not ready for prime time. Too bad. Perhaps they should consider reducing their menu so that they can maintain quality.
Nearly a 10+ Experience until the Check arrived
This restaurant will exceed your expectations as long as you dont expect to use your Landry Select Club membership to earn or redeem points at the location. The location is masquerading as a member of the Landry Chain Select Club and its a fake! If you are picking it for the membership experience do not go there! They are not part of the chain and allowing you to think they are.
If you are not going there for that reason or you dont care, then by all means dine there and your experience in both food and ambiance will exceed your expectations. The food is very good ( no matter what you pick), the serivce is super attentive and the ambiance even after night fall is really good. At my table Dan took care of us and he was terrific and all his back up team the same!
Prices are higher than many other places but its exceptional food and service so if you are having special occassion or you are not price sensitive, just ignore the menu prices and order anything and you will be amazed. I do think the $50 corking fee is excessive so we bought wine from them but their corking fee is gouging .
eat like a god. drink like a pirate.

Be the first to Replybig reputation, big view, big bill
if you are looking for a place with a big ocean view, the beautiful people, and a big reputation as the hot spot, this is the place. But bring your fat wallet and some attitude dust as everybody things they are special here. Could be a perfect spot or a turn off depending on your preference.
Be the first to ReplyWorst Mastro’s ever
I have been to Mastro’s in NYC AZ FLA CA an this location is the worst one. I booked a reservation for 9 people then tried calling this location many time to talk/email to the lady in Catering or in charge of large groups and never got a call back email or anything after many times. They phone tells you not to leave messages really? This person should not have this kind of job if she doesn’t know how to handle customers or knows how to use a phone or email. Mastro’s management should address this at once. I know this location probably doesn’t care if you come or not but that’s not how you build loyalty for your brand. I have been a loyal Landry’s Select member for years and when times where tuff I brought many of gift cards to try and help them but thanks to this one person I now am reconsider my membership.
