If you’re expecting fresh creative vegetarian food- this is not for you. Bland heavy and overpriced.
Very very bland stodgy heavy over priced pretentious cooking. You’d expect light fresh vibrant food in a vegetarian restaurant. This was unimaginative, uninspired knocked out cooking by people who don’t care what they are cooking. Style over substance. Not in any way worth the price and I feel totally ripped off. The best bit was the bread and the fermented butter. I had the tasting menu and each course was worse than the next. Actually the only decent course was the onion soup although even that was far too sweet, each course lacked a balance of flavours. One course was two big slices of super thick oily aubergine, old stale oil flavour sandwiched by thick slices of hard unripe tomato. Another was called a Russian salad and was a bunch of boiled carrot and potato in a tasteless thick kind of mayonnaise with two slices of hard unripe avocado on top. I was looking forward to the artichoke as they are a specialty in Rome and this is the season for them. It was very sour with vinegar which made me think its not freshly prepared. Another course had a Parmesan crisp which was stale. Last course was a crepe which tasted old. Or from the fridge at least. Give this place a miss. Staff were all very pleasant and professional

We didn't realize that this was a Michelin rated restaurant when we decided to go. We were just looking forward to dining on their rooftop terrace. As amazing as the view was, the food and the service were even better. Our waitress, Anna, was so kind to describe the dishes and the wine we ordered. She was an excellent server! We greatly enjoyed our meal, cozy in warm blankets that were provided when the air turned a little cool. I highly recommend Mater Terrae.

Superb vegetarian tasting menu. Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, this is a wonderful experience. The staff are great.

Perfect location ,perfect service( especially the wines, natural that not everyone understands, even the table next to ours)and the dishes were delicious.
all this makes the location perfect for a romantic dinner for two
Mixed feelings
While many of the reviews on Tripadvisor state that this restaurant has a Michelin star, I checked the current (2021) list by Michelin and it is not listed as having a star, although it is recommended by Michelin. Consequently, I did not anticipate a Michelin-star quality experience. Now, the very contemporary vegetarian food is certainly elegantly presented and often delicious. The breads are fresh and lovely. We started with a pleasant amuse bouche of a light, fried asparagus and eggplant, and a rather dry ground chickpea morsel, with a mayonnaise. We moved on to a "focaccia" that was unlike any other I've tried, almost paper thin and extremely intense, with cheese and truffle, and a crispy, asian-inspired eggplant dish that was truly delicious. We moved on to a beetroot risotto and pumpkin ravioli, probably not as tasty as our prior dishes, and ended with a molten chocolate cake that was superb. As it was a rainy night in November, there was no view. There were 11 tables total in the small, rather industrial space, with wheeled desk chairs for part of the seating. So, not much ambiance. Many patrons looked like they were coming from working out in the gym, which further detracted from the ambiance. It is the service, however, that could stand the most improvement. Overall the service felt disorganized. Part of this may be the fact that the staff are in a very small space where they are often hovering around a computer or congregating between tasks. One party arrived while we were there and complained that they had booked a certain table that was now occupied. Our waiter seemed a bit confused that we asked for his suggestion on a wine pairing, and we had to ask twice for a suggestion. We do note one young woman staffer was quite attentive. My conclusion was that the food is worth the high price -- indeed I'd say the food is Michelin-star quality -- but the rest of the experience is not.

After many days in Rome - experiencing the culinary delights that the city has to offer - we were sure that this Michelin star vegetarian restaurant would offer a creative and fresh change of pace. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement! The dishes were mundane at best, completely lacking any creativity, I didn’t even finish most of them. We ate at many of the restaurants, cafes, and osterias in the neighborhood and were amazed at the level of the service and the quality of the food at great prices, so spending 160 euro a head on a banal meal of food I couldn’t even finish was beyond disappointing.
The service was also not at the level we expect from a venue with a Michelin star. From experience we expected our water glasses to be filled by our waiter, our dishes to be cleared immediately upon finishing, bringing us the tea that came with our meal instead of having to ask for it explicitly after being offered the bill, etc. and that was simply not the level of service we received. The waitress didn’t consider addressing my almost full plate at every dish and simply cleared the table. She also was gone by the time we left the restaurant and didn’t think to say goodbye or introduce us to the waiter who was replacing her in the service.
In a nutshell - save your money and go to any of the neighboring spots and you will be much happier at the end of the night.
Overpriced
First course was 5 tasty bite sized vegetables for €28. Second course was a further 5 tasty bite sized vegetables for €36. Third course was a McDonald’s burger for €5. Thoroughly recommend. McDonald’s that is: not Raphael.
