Matsuhisa is one of those restaurants that you expect flawlessness in food, service and execution. Our visit was exceptional on many fronts, but not without some mis-steps by the staff.
Let’s focus on the positives for the appetizers…the chicken gyoza and tuna taco were delicious. I thought the beef skewers were not up to standards; they were overcooked and tough, the shrimp tempura was salty, and I felt fleeced by the tuna tartare with caviar. For the price I was expecting more than a small bowl of minced toro with a spoonful of caviar.
We loved the sashimi and sushi, it may have been some of the best in the US. I ordered the sashimi combo and the flavors and textures were perfect, other than the octopus (I am just not a fan of octopus). The slices were beautifully presented, moist, luscious, buttery, full-flavored, everything you would want. I will give a bit of a warning about the wasabi, take note that it is fresh and very hot, just a touch is required if you are looking for a little spice to the bite.
While we were smiling after the sushi and sashimi, we decided to order a bento box, and we were glad we did. The chocolate cake was divine, and the green tea ice cream was perfect.
Service was varied, from perfection to needs improvement. When you are spending over $100 per person, perfection is expected and needs improvement is not acceptable.
Overall, I was hoping for a memorable evening, but only felt as if I merely checked the box on going to Matsuhisa. If every dish had blown me away and the service was impeccable, I would relish returning, but few dishes cleared that hurdle, and the service was further away.
