great food and service
Ahi starter, Duck Confit and Chicken main. All superb though the plates were cold and the food was warm to cool (obviously great for the sashimi less so the main course). Gluten and dairy free was well dealt with. Pleasant and knowledgeable waiter. Good service in general.

family birthday, 11 guests, no one was happy. We were told because of the number of guests, we would have to have a special prix fix menue, which was lackluster to say the least, 3 courses: one salad, no choice; 3 entrees to choose from; a few desserts, none very impressive, pretty run of the mill. Not one of us truly enjoyed our dinner as a Michelin restaurant should, with an owner who is so supposedly stellar.
The erotic art on the walls was able to be dismissed, but in the upstairs ladies' bathroom child pornography could not be missed - disturbing, discusting, damn near criminal.
While we ate, a loud argument was happening not far from us at the front of the restaurant. A few thought the unhappy patrons wouldn't leave a tip, but those closer realized that the patron was saying the tip was the only thing he was willing to pay - not the food bill itself. Hmmm....that said it all.
Plenty of other great restaurants in Santa Monica. Our family is one of sophisticated world travelers/foodies and not one of us will ever return to Michael's.
Five Star Prices, Five Star Services But... Two Star Food
We were very excited about a meal here but... The service was great. Our server was very helpful when we selected our meal. We went with the $98 steak and rotisserie chicken.
I have had a $98 steak before and this was not one of them. The meat was just not up to grade. The chef tried to make it work but when starting with a bad cut of meat he could only do so much. At $98 my expectations were much higher.
The same for the rotisserie chicken... Just not up to the level for these prices. A few days ago we had chicken in a bistro in Seattle and it was easily 10 times better and much less expensive,
This place has delightful ambience and the service was awesome. You would think they could get the food right.
At these prices (I have paid much more for a meal) they need to up their game. Shakes Shack is right down the block.
Mist have been a bad day for the kitchen!!
We walked in with lots of hope for our dinner given the great reviews. Food was a disappointment if I want to be nice!
Frier was down so there went a bunch of items on the menu. Rotisserie chicken came to our table so pink you could see if was raw even in the dark room with only a candle on our table. We sent it back to be cooked and it still came back uncooked. The margarita pizza was sauce dumped on dough and it was spicy but tasteless and acidic. Bread and butter is all we ate. Cocktails were great and so was the ambiance and thats what kept us there.
Will not go back and will forever wonder what was going on in the kitchen that night. We certainly left disappointed with the food
Excellent food diversity, good service and ambiance
Excellent food diversity, good wine list, excellent service and ambiance. Slightly on the pricey side
Be the first to ReplyA Wonderful Surprise
My husband and I were walking around town awaiting the birth of our grandson. We were looking for somewhere nice to eat and happened upon Michael's. The menu is unique and every item ordered was excellent. Don't miss the sesame sour dough bread with seaweed butter. The wait staff were wonderfully attentive making a magical event even better.

Fine new menu. Two of us shared Coleman's salad, bouillabaisse, and a pasta special with cavier. Each was perfectly prepared and had taste surprize/delight. Service as always was warm and efficient.

โฆ.has certainly made his mark and a difference. The food was wonderful and admirably matches the incomparable location of a lush, dense garden where you can sit under the stars and enjoy it.
Prompt, swift service was exemplary as were the well-balanced ingredients and presentation. Though we were encouraged to share, you shouldnโt really need to take that advice, but order as you want for yourself as you will either be left with things you donโt want or like, or what you do want and like will pass swiftly down the gulletโs of your fellow dinners.
Going to Michaelโs should be a pleasure, which it certainly is, not a missed opportunity when your choices prove to be the most popular. I recommend the soft-shell crab, cooked perfectly and it was all mine, thank goodness.
Romantic Evening and wonderful memories
Over forty years ago Michael brought California cuisine to the world. His use of local, fresh ingredients, creatively prepared, in a garden setting with real California artists on the walls was the catalyst for what would become a very important new symbol of LA and gastronomy in California. Over the years, the dรฉcors have changed, a sliding roof was added, a bar at the entrance was created, an exhibition gallery was accommodated in the upper floor, the chefs and staff have moved on to create their own spaces, but Michael remains the genial and friendly host doing what he loves: chatting with his customers. Different chefs have brought different interpretations but the quality remains. Disappointingly service was very spotty the night we were there, confused and uncertain. Orders were mixed up and the wine would not arrive. Some days are like that. The fish was superb as was the duck. A romantic place and wonderful memories.
Be the first to ReplyNOT worth the time or money
Food quality and presentation is terrible. Grilled fish is placed in a cucumber juice and made soggy? Why? Duck meal is a leg with a few leafs of green on the top and grind green under it. On the side, it had rotten zucchini pieces with bad odor. Tables and chairs were plastic and cheap feeling. Staff were nice for the only reason two star was given. Many local guides give this place five stars, and it is not a five star restaurant at all.

Great Food. Great service. Sunday breakfast brunch was very tasty. Blue pragmatic and grits and the breakfast sandwich was top notch.
