Great innovative food and a friendly atmosphere.
Great innovative food and a friendly atmosphere. Southern style pub food with a just enough twist to make it unique and interesting. This was our first visit in the restaurant, but we’ve had take out from them before. Outstanding sandwiches! Recommend The chicken schnitzel.

Amazing food in a very unique setting. Hubby had the burger which he said was perfect. Fries were hand cut and delicious. I had the turkey pesto sandwich - comes on pumpernickel with pickled onions. To die for flavor! We’ll definitely be back!

My goodness what a happy find! I could come back everyday for a week and not try the same thing that looked amazing! I chose the Turkey pesto and was super happy! The fries are beyond delicious but the cucumber salad was to die for! It’s a MUST if you want budget friendly prices with gourmet quality food!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Service and Delicious Food
The restaurant is in the back of a strip mall and by the time we found it we were hangry. Not always good for our opinions…I say that to let you know that none of us were happy so a good review is even more significant! We were caught off guard by the friendly service that was also efficient and attentive. Mallory (I think) got us seated quickly with a smile! We started with the smoked, sweet onion dip. It came with veggies and chips. Highly recommend! We tried the special, a PBLT, which was house prepared pork ends with pimento cheese (also house made) with cucumber salad. I cannot imagine how it might be improved! It was delicious. At our table we also had ji3 which is reported as delicious. We also had a kids grilled cheese, Mac and cheese and macaroni salad! The lemonade and sweet tea were also hits!

In general, the food was just "ok". The burgers are HUGE and tasted fine - plenty of toppings. One us ordered the fish and chips and it arrived as chicken and chips. The fries were crispy on the outside, but literally empty on the inside. The cucumber salad was fantastic, and the waitress was fantastic.

Great food and superb service. Very casual atmosphere and the staff was very welcoming. The cucumber salad that comes on the side with sandwiches is so delicious. They have a solid line up of local beers. I totally recommend this place.

Lunch was so delicious! My Mom and Husband had the fried pork chops and enjoyed it very much! The onion dip and homemade potato chips were amazing! It’s a little difficult to find at the end of a small shopping strip.
Be the first to ReplyWell worth finding on John's Island
Not the easiest eating place to find on John's Island; The Southern General is tucked into a strip mall where surrounded by more dominant busineses, but we were pleased we persevered to find it. there is a welcoming atmosphere, friendly and efficient service, large portions of well-presented food at competitive prices and a fine choice of beers to go with it.

Looking for a place to eat off of Kiawah Island we found this tucked away in the back of a shopping plaza. With great service, amazing sandwiches, and Happy Hour from 4-7, we will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic!
This place was top notch!! Everything made in house - dare I say “smoked sweet onion mustard relish”?! Black and Blue chicken was perfection and easily enough for 2 meals. 2 people with ice teas and entrees $38. Worth every penny. Service was awesome, too! Thanks, Southern General!!
Be the first to ReplyJust the right amount of different
We had lunch on Saturday. The food was outstanding and the right amount of different. I had the special steak sandwich with feta, and it wonderful. My wife had the basil turkey sandwich and she was extremely pleased. The portions are good sized and the pricing is very reasonable. We will be back often to explore the rest of the menu.

Generous portions, solid food and great staff. Everything we had was awesome, can’t wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplySuch a friendly place
Whenever we want takeout for dinner, we go to The Southern General, since the food is so good, and the staff are so friendly. On this occasion, Addy waited on me, and we had a very pleasant conversation. We plan to eat there on a future occasion. This time, for three if us, we had a Chicken Schnitzel, Chicken Greek Wrap, Turkey Pesto, two orders of fries, and three of their featured desserts. As always, everything was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyA slice of Real Southern Good
A quaint unassuming spot mostly frequented by locals. About thirty miles from Charleston and on my way to the Tea Garden on Wadmalaw island. The wait for lunch was long but the food is worth it! They gave me a slightly spicy macaroni salad to start and then I had a lightly battered Shrimp Po-Boy sandwich with a cucumber salad. The shrimp was light and fluffy and it didn’t really need a sauce but it came with a homemade chili Mayo. All the diners were locals and also people working in the area. for the money it was Much better food than some of the $$$$$ spots in Charleston and Mount Pleasant
Be the first to ReplyBest local place for take out
As always, this is our number 1 place for take out. On this occasion, I ordered 3 sandwiches, the southern pot roast, chicken Greek wrap, potato latke, and 2 portions of French fries, with different levels of seasoning. Everything was delicious, with large portions. I am not too enthralled by the 20% industry charge, since I also left a tip for the same percentage, without realizing that the industry charge was the tip, since the online invoice showed a space for the tip. I will not make the same mistake next time.
Be the first to ReplyGreat selection for takeout
Whenever we want takeout for dinner, The Southern General always come to mind, since they have a large selection of items at very reasonable prices. On this occasion for three of us, two of had the chicken Greek wrap, and one had the black bean burger. We also ordered two portions of fries, one with light seasoning, and one with no seasoning. It is very impressive that there are four options, depending on one’s taste, since many restaurants provide fries that I find much too salty. Everything that we ordered was delicious, including the cucumber salad that comes with every meal.
Be the first to ReplyFood 5 stars! Service not so much!!
We stopped for dinner on a Thursday evening after visiting the Angel Oak Tree. I had read the reviews on Trip Advisor and thought we couldn't go wrong. If I was rating it strictly on the food they probably would of got 5 stars...the food was good, portions were adequate and the prices not bad(considering the 20% industrial fees or whatever they called it. The services lacked horribly and had alot to be desired. When we arrived Cora was right there and told us to seat ourselves etc. But after coming back for our order and us not being quite ready to order she walked away and we sat for another good 10 minutes with menus closed waiting for her to come back and take our order...as she stood and talked to the only other person in the establishment whom happened to be watiing for a to go order so it's not like she was even serving him. She never really came back and asked if we needed refills and when I did catch her attention to get me another drink she acknowledged me but then went about whatever and I had to ask her 10 minutes later for my drink. She also never offered any info as to the specials of the day, happy hour etc. I would give the place a second try based on the food.
Be the first to ReplyThe Southern General
The Southern General on Maybank Highway on Johns Island is a great place to go for well made sandwiches and drinks in a low key and relaxing atmosphere. I like their selection of different sandwiches and each one tastes great. Good experience every time I have been here.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect lunch spot on John's Island
My family of four stumbled upon the Southern General after visiting the angel oak and some other places near Johns Island. What a find! First of all it seemed to be mostly locals which is always a good sign. Super laid-back casual atmosphere and very friendly staff. Absolutely delicious lunch. All of the sandwiches come with this marinated cucumber salad that is sooooo good. Very reasonable prices.
Be the first to ReplyEverything was perfect except the fries
We have ordered take out in the past, and plan to continue to do so. Three of us ordered the potato latke sandwiches (mine was a wrap), and really enjoyed them. We also shared a Greek salad and fries. I had ordered the fries lightly salted, which they were, but not crispy, which unfortunately, they were also. As always, portions were mor than ample, and cost very reasonable.
Be the first to ReplyHuge sandwiches!
Out house hunting and needed to eat lunch, found this small restaurant and had lunch.....food was good, huge sandwich which was very good.....nice selection of sandwiches and other entrees
Be the first to ReplyLarge portions at reasonable prices
On one of our recent stays at our new house on John’s Island, where we plan to move later this year, we wanted a simple takeout meal and found The Southern General online. What a find! We ordered the chicken Greek wrap for my wife, the half pound Angus beef burger for myself, and a Greek salad that we shared. Everything was delicious. The people at the restaurant were super friendly and accommodating, even to the point that we received a phone call after we ordered to inquire whether or not the items that my wife didn’t want with her wrap were valid.
Be the first to ReplyHomemade salad dressings...so good
I'm a sucker for good ranch - and they definitely have it!! I think it was the best in house made ranch I've tasted. Our entire meal was delicious - you can tell the cooks know what they're doing!! And there was soo much food. I was actually sad I was too full to finish my meal, I wanted to just keep eating. We will definitely be going here again when we visit this area in the future!!
Be the first to ReplyNot great
The cheese curds were so good. The Cuban was absolutely terrible, my dad's words "you can throw that in the trash, unless you want a bread sandwich." My sesame shrimp was good flavor wise but portions have gone way down. Same as every sandwich place. Bottom line, you are way overpaying for food that was once great and plentiful but is now underportioned and cutting corners
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely do for lunch when visiting the Angel Oak
Don’t pass this one up!! We were a bit intimidated by the exterior. It gave off a smoky biker bar vibe. But we followed a young family in and we are glad we did! We were looking for a casual sandwich spot after eating in Downtown Charleston for 4 days. The Southern General hit the nail on the head. Funky creative sandwiches with a Southern twist. Plus the prices were good. Definitely recommend for lunch when visiting the Angel Oak.
