Revisited MT after a few years on my birthday eve.
The 4 of us having recently been to Balthazar, were keen compare and contrast their sister restaurant. First of all, walking in you're greeted by the hostess and offered to check in your coat. The tables are set up in classic French bistro style, which is to say close to each other but not too close where comparatively Balthazar feels claustrophobic. Here the staff is familial and eager to make you feel like a regular. We started off with a round of martinis which albeit good were not amazing. Blue cheese stuffed olives felt chalky and martini wasn't dirty like requested. We got 2 orders of French onion soup and 2 brioche with seared foie gras. Both were tasty and fairly indistinguishable from Balthazar's . Mains were 2 steak frites which we upgraded to rib eye for around $10 more. While the steak was good it was on the thin side and some cuts felt chewy. Frites were spectacular and perfectly crispy and seasoned. Other 2 orders were beef bourguignon with potatoes which my guests raved about. We finished with flawless grand marnier souffle which arrived piping hot and topped off with generous pour of said liquor. Despite a few misses with Martini quality and occasionally absent minded waiters, we virtually closed the place and were never rushed to pay and leave.

Such a gem! Hostess at the front was so sweet! Asked if it was our first time dining with them and when we told her yes, and she sat us at a wonderful table. Exceptional food and service. Can't wait to go again. Burgers are top notch. Highly recommend for a date night.
Be the first to ReplyI really love the service here, the staff really take care
I really love the service here, the staff really take care of you and make you feel welcome. However I want to settle the burger debate for once and for all- IMO the burger is not the best thing on the menu but it IS worth trying. Now the question becomes, which burger? The black label burger is the restaurant's iconic $38 burger that is made with dry aged beef. A lot of reviews here recommend getting it with cheese. Next, their other offering is the Minetta burger, which comes with cheese and costs $31. My opinion is that I much prefer the Minetta burger. You can taste the difference in the meats, with the BLB having a richer and more "aged" taste (almost sweeter meat). However the Minetta burger is just as juicy, though more savory and is complimented so well by the cheese on top. I did try the BLB with cheese (because I love cheese) and tasted it side by side with the Minetta burger and Minetta was still my preference. As for best burger in the city, I prefer Au Cheval but everyone has their own opinion on the matter. Now for my favorite offerings on the menu, their steak frites dish is so flavorful and well done, and I was blown away by their Vol Au Vent appetizer. It consisted of a beautiful puff pastry with mushrooms, chicken pieces, and chicken jus. It was salty, rich, savory- SO good. I always get the chocolate soufflé for dessert because it's so light and tasty. This is a great restaurant. Only drawback is how cramped it feels, but all the positives make up for this.
Be the first to ReplyMinetta Tavern is a classic staple in New York's dining
Minetta Tavern is a classic staple in New York's dining scene, renowned for its old-world charm and exceptional cuisine. However, recent visits have revealed a surprising turn; it's now reminiscent of the buzz and vibe found at Carbone, another icon in its own right, but with a distinct "boomer" twist. Where Carbone elevates Italian-American staples to fine dining heights with a modern, energetic ambiance, Minetta Tavern holds onto a more traditional, almost nostalgic appeal. It's like stepping back in time, where the décor, music, and overall ambiance feel like a nod to the past, appealing to those who appreciate a slice of New York's rich history alongside their meal. The food, while still of high quality, seems to cater to a palate that appreciates classic, hearty dishes over the innovative twists and bold flavors that Carbone is known for. The service at Minetta Tavern maintains a professional, almost ceremonious demeanor, contrasting with Carbone's lively and sometimes theatrical approach. This isn't to say Minetta Tavern has lost its charm. On the contrary, it offers a unique experience for those looking for a quieter, more reflective dining experience. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing guests to savor each bite and every moment. In a city that's always rushing forward, Minetta Tavern, like a "boomer" version of Carbone, invites you to pause and appreciate the enduring appeal of New York's culinary classics.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding experience.
A long standing restaurant did not disappoint. Service staff was knowledgeable, attentive, and responsive. Clean and engaging setting.
Be the first to ReplyGreat time at Minetta Tavern.
Food was amazing! The service and atmosphere will be up there in our cherished memories of family trip to NY 2024.

The old school vibe and excellent food and service is worth the prices. The burger is superb.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
Quaint. Old school nyc. The vibe, atmosphere, service.., everything impeccable. Definitely go here, only gripe from 4-5 star is price. 31 to 38 burger, $25 drinks . It's packed because it's legit for every reason.... But it $$$$$$ for the experience. We'll be back, but w so many great spots, it'll be compared. Example - burgers $31-38. Very good, but..,. Be judicious
Be the first to ReplyI stopped in here with my better half and another couple
I stopped in here with my better half and another couple for a late brunch. The overall food quality was quite good, but the service was somewhat spotty. It was clear that there were some "regulars" there that were receiving faster and better service than we were. As just one example, one of my dining companions waited an absurdly long time for drink that was literally a neat glass of scotch. That should have taken a bartender all of 10 seconds to pour, and I believe he waited close to 20 minutes. During that interval, the four top next to us ordered cocktails, received them, and had time to make a toast. That may seem like a minor quibble, but that is also what makes the difference for me between four and five stars--Absolute attention to every detail
Be the first to ReplySometimes you just gotta treat yourself.
. and that's exactly what I did coming here. I've gone twice now, both times having the black label burger after reading rave reviews. The black label burger is delicious. Really thick patty with very high quality meat cooked to perfection (in this case, medium rare). Caramelized onions on top. A literal mountain of fries. Incredible! As it should be, though, for $40. Really good service too. I sat at the bar, which was crowded on a Friday night, but they still managed to keep very on top of all the customers. This being said, for a $40 burger, even with high-quality meat, you'd expect a bit more on there. Cheese? Bacon? Not sure.... It was a very nice indulgence and I left very full. But I feel like I'd add something else to it!
Be the first to ReplyService and food quality remain as exquisite as ever.
A recent return with out-of-town visitors with hopes to impress was not disappointed. The black label burger lives up to the hype. I thought it tasted even better than before COVID and the quarantine. Absence definitely made the heart and taste buds grow fonder!

Hard to get in unless you are willing to part with a $50 to the MD! Worth every penny! Such an iconic spot. The steak was top notch!

Came here for last minute lunch with friends! Haven't been back in years, but the burger was just as good as I remembered it (shared it with husband). Our friends out of town basically inhaled all the food! Service was great, there was a minor spillage incident and they were very kind to offer to take care of it. Ambiance was chill - great place to have a meal with friends! Will always be a place I'll take friends and family.

Escargots tasted like mowed dried grass. Burger was ok, cheese invisible.

A classic, I've only gotten the burger and steak here and both were great, if not a bit over-priced, but what isn't in the city these days?

So nice to be able to walk in to an institution like Minetta Tavern and immediately be whisked to a table and sat down to eat. After searching for breakfast, ended up doing breakfast and lunch here. We tried the croque madame, the belgian waffle, and the classic cheeseburger. Everything was very good - great service, fun old school vibe, and yes, the burger lived up to the hype. Definitely worth a visit whilst a New York resident...
Be the first to ReplyMy gf made reservations for us to come here since the black
My gf made reservations for us to come here since the black label burger had been on the list for such a long time. I'll start with the service. Our waiter, Noah, was friendly, attentive, charming, and still very professional at the same time. He gets 5 stars. We started with the French onion soup which was delicious. Checked off all the marks for what you want in a great French onion soup. Next the bone marrow. This was definitely the star of the evening. From the moment it gets in the dining room it has heads turning. It is definitely an eye catching plate. Rich, decadent, flavorful meat butter that paired perfectly with shallot confit. Next up is the reason we came!! The Black Label Burger. The expectation scale was high for this one. Unfortunately those expectations were not met. It was not a bad burger by any means whatsoever, but when the price tag is considered, the burger under delivers. The hand cut (I think) fries were very good. I would certainly return to try some other menu items. You should go try for yourself. ENJOY!!!

Superb American food with the best burger I have ever had (Black Label Burger). It's a modest portion for a steep price but well worth the experience. Roughly $30 a dish. 5/5 stars as a dinner spot.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome burger.
We ate here a few weeks back after walking around the vibrant NYU neighborhood and Washington Square Park. I'm glad we made reservations, the place was packed for lunch. We were seated in a cool semicircular booth in the back, perfect spot not to feel too crowded. The vibe and feel is old school NYC, almost like Old Hollywood, with vintage pics on the wall, reds, leathers, woods, reminded me of The Brown Derby.Service was good. Food was great.I had a Goose Island IPA on tap.We had a side of the THICK CUT APPLEWOOD BACON $15 which was good! More like thick cut of smoked pork belly. My son had the "MINETTA BURGER* $30Cheddar, caramelized onions, pommes frites" which was very good from the bite I had, and he like it.I had the famous "BLACK LABEL BURGER* $38selection of prime dry-aged beef cuts, caramelized onions, pommes frites" which was excellent. Inoticed later that it didn't come with cheese. No matter, the flavor of the meat was delicious, and I could see why it is hyped. Really really good burger, and I would come back just for that.
Be the first to ReplyVery solid food here.
I got a reservation for 2 a couple weeks in advance as this place was a frequently recommended spot for burgers in the city. The ambiance was very regal and the staff/service was great and prompt. The food was solid - we both got the black label burger which came with a mountain of French driest that were skinny and crispy. The burger itself was very basic, really nice meat quality with a great peppery char bite. It was topped with grilled onions in a kind of au jus sauce that was good but honestly a little bland. It was missing a salty bite that it desperately needed to elevate it. Overall, solid meal, a little pricey but I wasn't expecting an amazing experience either. Au cheval is still the best burger in NYC!

Came here with my family for a special occasion and the place is just right. The food is excellent and everything is decent and has great options. Definitely the steak is so good and absolutely fantastic. Well-done and well-seasoned. Very tender and juicy too. I also like the bone marrow, it has good flavor, great appetizer. Extensive menu and drinks selections were fantastic too. I can't explain how good the place was but visit now, and you have try this. We did enjoy our time there and absolutely great experience.
Be the first to ReplyDuring :Wonderful atmosphere with amazing food.
I could not stress enough how amazing the food was and the amazing taste it had to it After: Death. Currently bent over crying with tears and a vhs collection of SpongeBob playing in the background of my bathtub television. The food being great was not worth the horrible up all night gas pains. I'd rather McDonald's at this point.
Be the first to ReplyWell the hype is real folks , the Black Label Burger is one
Well the hype is real folks , the Black Label Burger is one of the best I have eaten. The reviews are correct. Absolutely delicious !!! I even took the other half home. I had the privilege of visiting this cute old fashioned restaurant during this past week. 10pm reservations were all we could get and the restaurant was hopping. Food was on par. For apps we had butter lettuce salad, brussel sprouts and escargot, Even removed from shell. All very good. Ribeye special , scallops and the black label burger for Main dishes. Excellent meal with no complaints. For dessert was the best Chocolate Soufflé around. At the table they slice it open and pour in hot caramel sauce. Superb...... and I added some salted Caramel ice cream on the side. Why not ! A well known restaurant worth a visit if in the Greenwich Village Area. Only small complaint was how uncomfortable the tables were while sitting but can overlook that for a great meal.
