In March, we were back to BarMini. Again, this was part of our dining experience at the adjacent MiniBar, though on this visit, we were in BarMini for only our dessert courses, as our evening began in the “living room” next door.
There were a few subtle changes, from our previous visit to BarMini, over a year before, but not enough to really notice - a chair removed here, one added there, a new table, but with the bright, highly eclectic décor, one would almost have to study previous photos, to pick up on the changes.
On this visit, there were several patrons at the bar, when our group of 12 diners (the number seated at MiniBar, as we were only a party of two) entered, after our savory courses in the adjacent dining room/kitchen. All of the others were enjoying their craft cocktails, which looked amazing. We, however, were there for desserts, coffees and in our case, two lovely Madeiras.
Service was excellent, and we wanted for nothing. There was as much whimsey in the desserts, and their presentations, as there is in the décor of the interior, plus a lot of visual “fun and games.”
The cocktails, which the bar patrons were having were intriguing, to say the least. I would have joined them, but we had already had 14 wines, with two more on the way, so it was not cocktail night for either of us. Still, the drinks were amazing in their complexity, and presentations, and enough so, that we will return, just for cocktails, though we are both avowed winos. I also got to see how the chemistry set, which I had observed on my previous visit, was used in the making of a cocktail. I just have to experience that first hand, and will do so, when we’re next back to DC - or so I plan.
Just a fun way to end an evening of fine-dining at Chef Andrés’ next door. The whole experience was a bit like Salvador Dali conspired with the Mad Hatter from Lewis Carroll to design and decorate BarMini, and then Young Frankenstein was tending bar in his laboratory - slightly surreal, but in a very interesting, and charming way. Got to get back for those cocktails!
