I kind of wanted to be a hater because Momofuku is such a mainstream pick for a restaurant (an annoying take, I know) but for a ramen spot the menu options are unique and the food is pretty solid too. In fact, I find their sides much more appealing than their namesake noodle dishes, whose flavors I found to be one note. The top-notch service, tasty sides and interesting dessert made this a really fun restaurant to take a group to, and the location inside the beautiful Columbus Circle building really plussed up the experience.David Chang is a polarizing figure in some circles, but his restaurants all have a playful twist I find very appealing. I appreciate that the original Momofuku Noodle bar's East Village location is credited with popularizing ramen in NY and the blossoming modern Asian food scene in the neighborhood. The restaurant scene when I attended high school in the East Village a couple of decades ago was quite different from what it is today. So while the ginger scallion noodles with pickled shiitake, wakame, and cucumber didn't hit the flavor notes I would've enjoyed in a noodle dish, the sides did hit. The shrimp buns are always a win, the mussels came in a great portion size and were full of flavor. The charred lettuce smothered in what tasted like an elevated green goddess sauce with chopped pistachios were also a delight. I loved finishing off the meal with their guava and cheese softserve. The guava and cheese flavor didn't come out as strongly as I hoped, but the quality of the cream was great.Compared to the East Village location this Uptown one is more spacious, and I thought the staff was especially friendly and warm here. I love the neon peach sign out front, which really adds to the playful ambience the brand creates at all their locations. If I come back, the seared shrimp buns will be the first thing I order.
