Mtskheta is called a cafe, but it feels like a dukani, a tavern that is often tucked below street level, with its stone fireplace and cosy atmosphere. Pretty solid menu of Georgian regional fare: hot, soupy khinkali dumplings, sizzling juicy kupati sausages, khachapuri imeruli oozing cheese (the type of khachapuri that Mtskheta serves is not the Adjarian type with raw egg cracked into the center), wildly flavorful eggplant rolls filled with walnut-garlic-fenugreek paste (badrijani nigvzit). The homey stews are also delicious, ranging from the surprisingly light chakapuli scented with green herbs, to the robustly beefy, spicy ostri. On a cold day, mellow bean stew (lobiani kotanshi) with cornbread (mchadi) and a side of pickles will stick to your ribs. Georgian food is interesting in that its flavor notes are different from the more widely available Russian-East European-Middle Eastern ones. Some may find the stews runny, but that's because they're not thickened, true to home-style cooking. And they are most certainly not thin on flavor. This is also a good place to try Georgian wine and food pairings as Mtskheta offers a selection of Georgian wines with several popular grape types represented (there are reportedly circa 500 wine grape varieties in Georgia!) And do try the bright green tarragon soda for fun!Service is warm and attentive. I've gone there with a large group, and we were very well taken care of.
