We were denied service by a very rude waitress right off the bat. Mind you, there were empty tables there. By the time she approached us, one could guess that something unpleasant is going to happen. She looked us up and down and said 'no tables available'. The only word missing there was 'for you'. She obviously did not like something in our appearance which is a very typical post Soviet way to treat people and was lying in our faces! And let me tell you, we were dressed very well. Absolutely insulting, unapologetic way to behave. Never in our lives we were asked to live like that in any of the restaurants of any other ethnic cuisine! Make yourself a favor and pick any other restaurant on 86th ave, do not waste your breath on that place. One of the worst experiences in a very long time. Never again!

My group and I came here for dinner after deciding, new year, new cuisine. We came on a Friday night and it was pretty busy, as there was a party of 10 in one corner. The restaurant is quite warm and cozy, good for a small party. There's only 1 restroom but that wasn't an issue. Anyway, food! We really wanted to order Khachapuri with the poached egg, however, they do not have it here, rather they have a flat soft bread with cheese in the middle...which we did order. It was enough to not feel too heavy, but if you wanted more cheese, they do have one with double the cheese. We also ordered the khinkali, or the dumplings. They were more the size of a bun than a dumpling. The top of the dumpling was quite thick, so it was a bit hard to eat, otherwise, the filling was pretty good. We also had an eggplant appetizer with walnut pate. It wasn't for me, as there was a heavy oil aftertaste. Next we ordered the pork sausage. My friends said it was their favorite. I have a neutral opinion on it, but it wasn't bad. It was perhaps slightly too smokey for me.We also ordered their mushroom appetizer, which reminded me of escargot, heavy garlicky butter smell and taste. Lastly, we ordered the chicken in garlic sauce. The garlic sauce was a bit runny, I kinda wished it was thicker or if there was slightly less sauce. However, the sauce was good with the bread they provided, as it tasted just like toasted garlic bread. I have to say, this cuisine isn't fit for everyone's taste, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to give it a try. They do have a 10% service charge already added to the bill, plus a 3.5% charge for paying with credit card and still need to pay tip on top. Just something to look out for.
Be the first to ReplyThe place is cozy enough and the service is okay.
The cheese dish was not as good as the other Georgian place in Brooklyn that I had attended, which I think had at least one Michelin star. I doubt this one has one. I mistakingly had put their review with five stars under the name Mtskheta Cafe. The beef soup was not as good as well, and it tasted soapy. There were only two cubes of beef for the small one, much fewer than in the other Georgian restaurant. I was told that there would be four cubes in the big one. Ridiculous! The fireplace was a nice touch, but not real. The bathroom was plain but clean enough.

The food is very delicious! The staff were so welcoming and generous. I even got a free drink with my fiancé! I would definitely recommend. It's a hidden gem and beautifully decorated during the holidays.

Be the first to ReplyNot sure what the deal with this restaurant is.
One day I came at 5PM and they said I couldn't eat as they were fully booked (all tables were empty).Next time I called upfront and asked if I could make a reservation for 3PM and they responded that the reservations were accepted only from 4PM, I asked if I could eat at 3PM (they are open from 12PM) as a walk-in then and they said yes. When I walked in at 3PM, one couple was dining all other tables were empty, but they said that I could only eat at 4PM.I spent 8 hours so far trying to eat at this restaurant and never took a bite. I think I'm done with them.

First time dining here, and I now understand why it received a Michelin Mention. Food is really good and price is very fair. Will return to try other items in their menu. Of note is the fried dumplings. It's got soup inside like the Shanghai steam buns except this is double the size and fried and I believe it's beef or lamb inside instead of pork. Really delicious. If I could I would eat ten of these.

Really excellent Georgian cuisine, have never been disappointed. Outside looks closed but inside is warm & inviting. Highly recommend & you can BYOB which is fun too.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a hole in the wall kind of place.
Didn't look much from the outside since the restaurant is small. When you see the word cafe in the name of the restaurant, makes you think that there is only coffee and some pastries. That's what I was thinking until I decided to pop in to see what kind of food they offer. It was around dinner time close to 7pm. I was greeted by a friendly waiter and he quickly brought me to the table. I really liked the decor, there was a giant spoon on the wall!!! I love random restaurant wall decor. Makes it more interesting to look at.I asked the waiter for recommendations and he recommended few items like Khinkali, which looks like an oversized chinese soup bun with meat filling. There was 6 of them. Once you take a bite, the juice comes out. It was amazing!!! My toddler was too busy admiring the muscular waiter. She is usually shy with strangers but not with this one. She even blew him a kiss and waved good bye when we left.

Be the first to ReplyThe food here is divine, unlike any meal you will ever have.
The Soup Khrcho will transport you to another place and time entirely. The flavors are so rich and unusual. khinkali and kupati were outstanding, we finished every morsel. Everything was cooked to perfection and flavored so beautifully. Highly recommend the Georgian salad and an order Khachapuri as well. Cannot wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyAll I was after is a bowl of kharcho.

Great food, great service! We came here on a Friday night and it wasn't so crowded. Our server was very attentive and patient, answering all our questions. The khachapuri was delicious and cheesy and we even ended up getting a Turkish coffee despite not being coffee drinkers. Get it the way they recommend (roasted with sugar). This place feels like home. We will definitely be back!

Mtskheta is called a cafe, but it feels like a dukani, a tavern that is often tucked below street level, with its stone fireplace and cosy atmosphere. Pretty solid menu of Georgian regional fare: hot, soupy khinkali dumplings, sizzling juicy kupati sausages, khachapuri imeruli oozing cheese (the type of khachapuri that Mtskheta serves is not the Adjarian type with raw egg cracked into the center), wildly flavorful eggplant rolls filled with walnut-garlic-fenugreek paste (badrijani nigvzit). The homey stews are also delicious, ranging from the surprisingly light chakapuli scented with green herbs, to the robustly beefy, spicy ostri. On a cold day, mellow bean stew (lobiani kotanshi) with cornbread (mchadi) and a side of pickles will stick to your ribs. Georgian food is interesting in that its flavor notes are different from the more widely available Russian-East European-Middle Eastern ones. Some may find the stews runny, but that's because they're not thickened, true to home-style cooking. And they are most certainly not thin on flavor. This is also a good place to try Georgian wine and food pairings as Mtskheta offers a selection of Georgian wines with several popular grape types represented (there are reportedly circa 500 wine grape varieties in Georgia!) And do try the bright green tarragon soda for fun!Service is warm and attentive. I've gone there with a large group, and we were very well taken care of.
