This is definitely the new popular kid in town but I was lucky enough to get a reservation on Resy. That said, it looks like they take a lot of walk-ins. The line starts getting long as early as 5:15. They open at 5:30.
So I made the mistake of thinking this was an omakase place. It's not. This place is about the temaki or better known as hand rolls. Nami Nori doesn't roll it into a cone or roll, instead they take the taco approach.
The service is fast despite being busy and the food comes out even faster. We opted not to get the chef's choice since I despise California rolls. For appetizers, the crispy rice spicy tuna was delicious and came out in 2 minutes flat. The calamari was different than what you're typically used to but good.
When it comes to the temaki, our favorites were the xo scallops, Santa Barbara uni (they didn't have Hokkaido), toro and scallion (we added caviar to this piece), and finally the spicy crab dynamite.
The maitake was fragrant but not amazing. The lobster tempura was fried in the same matter as the calamari and was overpowered by the mayonnaise. And the special piece of shira ebi (one of my favorites fishes of all time) was too heavily limed.
Overall I can see the appeal of this place. It can be affordable but also quickly add up. We ordered the primo pieces so it was not a cheap meal.
That's said, I would be back.
