On a recent tour of Chinatown eateries we stopped in to Nom Wah Tea Parlor on the suggestion of my friend Stef. This has been a spot I've wanted to hit for a very long time and I was excited to check it out! Greeted immediately by a friendly waiter as we entered and given a table right away. It was quite busy inside and there were also a lot of takeaway orders coming through as we sat and dined. I started out with a sweetened milk tea (how could I come to a tea parlor and not get tea) that I enjoyed thoroughly. I'm typically not one to drink my calories but I'd order this again in a heartbeat. We started with the pan fried dumplings and the scallion pancakes. Samantha is a big scallion pancake fan so we had to grab those and I am forever on the search for the best dumplings (we also ordered some Xiao long Bao that were being prepared to come after) so we grabbed those as well. The dumplings were cooked exactly how I like them. They were pan fried and crusty on one side and steamed on the other. The filling was good, not great, but overall I'd order these again. The scallion pancakes were incredibly thin, like phyllo dough thin, which is not something I'm used to. I don't like them TOO doughy, but this was quite the opposite. I honestly preferred the scallion pancakes we had earlier in the day at Tasty Dumpling to these, but the dumplings here were better. The Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) came after and they were exactly what I was craving. They were smaller than others I've had in the past but they made up for that in flavor! The broth inside was incredibly savory and delicious and the dumpling itself had great chew and flavor as well. These are in the conversation with some of the best soup dumplings I've had. I would come back here on any trip to Chinatown and be totally happy about it. The food was priced well and tasted good and the feel and ambiance of the restaurant was cozy and felt authentic. Nom Wah Tea Parlor - Didn't Suck!

Soup dumplings were awesome! Had a wait on a Monday afternoon. Overall good experience!
Be the first to ReplyDim sum wasn't anything special.
Pretty average. I like the old feel of the place but food was just only okay. Cash only or Amex only
Be the first to ReplyRestaurant is clean and historical.
Service was quick, food was decent. Soup dumplings were the best! Definitely think there are superior options in the area and wouldn't go back. They are also cash only!
Be the first to ReplyI recommend this restaurant the best in china town.

Be the first to ReplyWe decided to try Nom Wah after reading an article about it
We decided to try Nom Wah after reading an article about it being the oldest continuously operating tea parlor in Chinatown. While it was ok, and definitely had old school charm, I don't think I'll go back because there are so many better options for food in that area. The dead giveaway was the largely Anglo clientele. We tried the salt and pepper pork chop - tasty but very greasy, and didn't have any chilies; the steamed pork bun; scallion and cilantro dumplings- kind of tasteless; and the shrimp and pea leaf dumplings- winner winner chicken dinner! I will say that the food was a good value (I.e., portion size to cost), and the variety of teas available was impressive. I think Nom Wah might be best for tea and dessert after a meal elsewhere, such as the Taiwan Pork Chop House next door. But if you aren't an adventurous eater or are more comfortable in a restaurant where the menu is all in English, this is a good option.
Be the first to ReplyIt can be quite a wait at this overhyped dim sum place.
However, my group of 4 managed to be the first in line today. Even then, we waited for what felt like 30+ minutes outside just to be seated. After being seated and they pick up your order slip, things speed up exponentially. Your food will come so fast that the small table becomes quickly filled to the brim. Food wise, the variety was not as much as more "traditional" dim sum places. Still a lot of food though. However, the dishes were a hit or miss. My favorite were probably the Chicken Feet and Red Bean steamed buns. My least favorite was the Salt and Pepper pork chops. This place is a tourist trap. Worth going once but not worth going another time with Chinese American family.
Be the first to ReplyThe oldest dim sum place in Manhattan.
The line is very long though so be warned! We had to wait like around 1.5 hrs for a seat. It is pretty authentic and the food reminds me of my childhood as I would get dim sum with my family during the weekend. The sticky fried rice is delicious. The portion size for the fried rice and the noodles are huge! The price was very affordable it came out to $25/person for a group of 7! Overall, i would come here again.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is delicious.
It's just down and across the street from Bowery Ballroom so it's a great location for a pre-show dinner. The portions are fairly large and shareable. The dumpling sauce is amazing so don't miss that! Their vegetarian options are just as delicious and thoughtful as their meat options. The fried rice was a stand out along with the tofu bun! The peach buns really stole the show as a dessert, the lotus filling is impeccable.

This Friday, I was delighted to find that there was no line at Nom Wah. We were seated immediately, and the service was very quick after we placed our order. The dim sum was tasty, and the menu had a wide variety of options. We were able to try all different kinds of dim sum for a very reasonable price. I'd definitely recommend visiting this iconic restaurant.

While everyone has their favorite dim sum spot - this one is solid. Don't have a baseline of the place, but went here with friends. Lined up 15 minutes before opening and was seated right away. Food wasn't mind blowing but it was still good We had a corner booth and was served right away - servers wasn't rude even though it was busy. Ambiance was good - will not go here frequently but don't mind bringing out of towners here.
Be the first to ReplyFood is average to below average.
We (group of 5) arrived about 20 minutes after the restaurant opened on a Sunday morning (1/8/2023) and had to wait over 1 hour to obtain a table (they do not accept reservations and do not allow you to leave your phone number on a waiting list. They make you physically stand in line until they allow you entrance into the restaurant. No one greets you when you line up. You just stand in line if you want to gain entrance into the restaurant). The service is average to below average as the restaurant was packed with customers. I agree with the other Yelpers that there are other dim sum restaurants in Chinatown with better food, better service and less wait time. We came to this restaurant due to the hyped-up reputation of this restaurant. I would not recommend this restaurant unless you enjoy wasting more than 1 hour of your time waiting / standing outside in the elements to obtain a table for mediocre to below average dim sum for mediocre service. The ambiance of the restaurant is extremely dated. The table tops and seating are in dire need of renovations.

Super popular dim sum spot in Chinatown that draws all the tourists. It's not very big compared to other dim sum parlors in the area, so the wait is almost double that of their competitors. And they're experiencing a surge in popularity as of late, so the wait is even longer now... I always see a line out the door when I pass by. Definitely get the og egg roll when you go because I have yet to see it at other places.

This place is legit! Food was great, service was great, and overall a good experience. Only downside is it's always so busy that there's a long wait, but it's worth it. Shoutout to the staff for being friendly and accommodating
Be the first to ReplyAwesome place and food.
You will likely have to wait in line to eat here, but worth the wait. Food is super fast

Nom Wah Tea Parlor in New York City was a fantastic experience during the Chinese New Year. Despite having to wait in line for about an hour, it was worth it for the traditional atmosphere and delicious food. The history of the tea parlor added to the charm and made the meal even more enjoyable. The food was not only delicious, but it also had a rich history that added to its appeal. Overall, I would highly recommend Nom Wah to anyone looking for a taste of traditional Chinese cuisine. Feasting on the finest dim sum at Nom Wah and bringing a piece of the magic back with me Proud to rock my new Nom Wah tee, a reminder of my tasty adventure in the city that never sleeps

Unlike most people who google and hit the place as a must-go-to, my husband and I happened to just find it on one of our Chinatown crawls. And we were very pleasantly surprised once we discovered what a gem we'd found. A dim sum Parlour (the place reads yea Parlour but felt like a dim sum Parlour to me) that's been around for more than a 100 years is no joke. And the food did live upto the expectations- that's saying something as my husband happens to be a culinary-trained chef. :) The shrimp dim sums were excellent (they can be a mouthful because of how densely stuffed they are, so don't be shy to eat it in two bites). The shrimp was sweet and springy, very fresh. Nothing too fancy, just good ingredients cooked right. The lotus stem sweet dumplings were comforting, but a bit dry for my palate, although my husband loved them as they were. The service could be better- the eggplant starter we ordered was too big to be eaten with chopsticks and needed a knife and a fork, and hence I politely asked for a knife and a fork. The waiter simply forgot, leaving me fidgeting with my eggplant. They do rush you after you are done eating, which is never a nice experience. But when you have people lined up to eat at a 100 year old place, that can be forgiven. Overall, definitely worth a visit. For the history, and for the food.

Old school dim sum place on a pedestrian street in Chinatown, social media hot spot. 4 for service, 3 for food, 2 for ambiance (but people come here for the shabby chic atmosphere). Long wait outside, they won't take names so you have to stay in line or lose your spot...
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: please, please if you want good dim sum go somewhere
TLDR: please, please if you want good dim sum go somewhere else. Go to Nom Wah if you're wanting to go for just the ability to say that you've been and you want to take the photos.I don't know a single New Yorker who likes Nom Wah. Every time this place comes up, no matter who I'm with, we always agree that this place is not worth the line or money. You can go to other dim sum places in Chinatown for less and better quality. I gave this place a few tries because I had friends from out of town who really wanted to try it and each time we were disappointed.I will say that I'm super happy with what the owner has done for visibility and continuing a legacy.. so I would go back to support an Asian business but definitely not my favorite dim sum in NYC.
