WILL NEVER COME BACK AGAIN
Food was great but I am very disappointed as two young waitresses/hostesses were making fun of my body and the way I walk when we were leaving the restaurant. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!! We were planning in coming back since we donโt have to leave from our vacation until July 9 but we will never come back again and they should be fired for being so disrespectful and impolite!! I donโt want to turn this into a discussion regarding my personal appearance as it is pointless, I am an adult woman with natural and feminine curves, I was dressed appropriately for a summer in NY, I was wearing a loose long summer dress and still I got one of them mocking me right in my face, and the other one laughing at it. They made me feel so uncomfortable that I told them right away. We will never come back. Be aware of judgmental and disrespectful waitresses.

LONG FUNNY STORY -- The five STARS go to the Hotel Concierge Across the Street!!
We planned our visit to Nyonia to celebrate my husband who had, in the past, I remembered, especially liked the restaurant. As an Indonesian Chef in Manhattan working for Jean-George without access to ANY Indonesian restaurants other than in Queens. As covid is spiking again we called Nyonia to check wether we should book but no special instructions were given other than "no need to make a booking, it is a Monday night, we have tables". We arrived from New Jersey with a credit card, Venmo, ApplePay, and $22 cash. The person at the entrance cashier, a man with bleach blond hair, just repeated "CASH ONLY"... I do not know the cash pin to my credit card, tried twice outside the restaurant, called chase and yes I could get a pin in 10 days in the mail...
So I ran to the hotel across the street hoping they would take my Venmo for cash. The concierge must have mistaken me for a guest.. offered to pay for the restaurant bill and then charge it to my room... from the hotel I could see my son already seated front row at a table in Nyonia facing the street -- so I said a big Thank You to the AMAZING concierge who had already reached out to the manager to help me while I could now see my son receiving food. I ran back to Nyonia and said "let me Venmo you or any of your staff now before we dine, but he said "NO there is nothing we can do about it", repeated it a few times -- I now took on my teenage face and said, "yo, you have to help here!! I am not asking for money, I am wanting to pay you, I want to give you money and you will not take it!!! So he got down from his big cashier post and said: "try to Venmo some of our guests"... with that, I venomed two different guests and added tips to these strangers and we finally ordered more food and dined, spoke Bahasa, and were served with care... a little twist on Victor Victoria, the window glowing in the freezing cold and the now semi busy Nyonia staff absolutely oblivious to what a time this was for us.
Very Good Malaysian Cusine in NYC
We are a regular here and love most of the specialty dishes. Not soup noodles or fried noodles stuff. They are good not not in good value.
The best dishes should be the Hainan Chicken and Dry Curry Beef. Satay Tofu and Roti Canaibare great too.
The not so good is, they increase the price again in August.
No respect for clients!
Nonya used to be a decent restaurant. Now they are sweeping the floor while clients are eating! !!! Besides the food quality has deteriorated. Come on!
Be the first to ReplyMy fave Malaysian Restaurant in New York City
I was introduced to Malaysian food here and after all these years of eating at an abundance of Malaysian restaurants, this is still one of my faves.
Everyone knows about the Roti but you have to try the lemongrass squid with coconut rice. You wonโt regret it.
Very Average Food
There is nothing special about this place. The quality varied per dish, some were super oily and others severely lacked flavor. I just find that you can get better food elsewhere despite the okay prices. The nesi lamak was really mediocre as was their char kway teo.

I love chicken curry. This is better than I can make at home. The special bread the curry is served with is great for dipping. I enjoyed discovering this food that is new to me.

After visiting Malaysia last year I was excited to try out this restaurant. The food did not disappoint.

This was our second time eating here. The food is fantastic and the service is always great. The hokkien char mee was amazing. It is cash only, but they put up multiple signs up when you walk in to remind you. Will definitely return.
