We almost always splurge on a sushi night when up in San Francisco. Historically, Ozumo has been our goto, and it will stay in the rotation because it is great for business dinners, super conveniently located, and always consistently good.
But, we took a chance on Okane tonight and it is now our default. Yes, it is a little out of the way, but the less formal ambiance suits us, and the quality of the fish and value of the pricing means that it is unquestionably our favorite option if we can spare the time to get out there.
Everything we ordered was perfectly executed (Sashimi 8 pc chef's choice is $28 of deliciousness you should not avoid). But, tonight's Hokkaido Uni was in contention for some of the best we'd ever had (never been to Hokkaido, but have spent at least 30 days in Japan total). Also, black sesame ice cream is sublime. If you think you don't want dessert, you are wrong. It is light, but sweet, and the way you want to end your meal.
The price point of Omakase (sister restaurant) had historically scared us off as something that was no doubt worth it, but perhaps not justifiable for us. After tonight's amazingly awesome meal, we are now planning to go back to Okane whenever we are in SF, and for my husband's birthday dinner splurge we'll be hitting up Omakase.
