Old Edwards Inn and Spa Highlands Reviews from The Last Year
They have absolutely beautiful restaurant.
Amazing food and great service. Cocktails are always fresh and delicious.
Not what it used to be
My husband and I have been coming for years and while we have noticed a decline in the level of service, we still always look forward to our yearly romantic getaway. We’ve enthusiastically recommended OEI to our family and friends. I should have known that things were going to be different when I called to book spa services and I was told their new policy regarding day passes. In the past, access to the spa amenities was included for all guests. My husband and I always enjoyed a lunch in the cafe, time in the quiet room and enjoying the sauna and steam room. When I called to book my spa services for this stay, there wasn’t much availability for both of us to get services but they said he could buy a day pass. We arrive today to find that they don’t even offer day passes on Friday and Saturday and could not even allow him to come eat lunch with me in the cafe. While I was bummed about not being able to enjoy our usual spa time together, I’m not going to make a big deal about someone making a mistake at the booking. There has always been a technology policy and I have always brought a kindle that makes no noise or even light and it has never been an issue. This time though, I am approached by staff while I am reading in a public area and told it is not allowed. I understand their commitment to creating a peaceful environment for all guests, however I fail to understand how a device that creates absolutely no disturbance to anyone else and is a very relaxing diversion for many people could be forbidden. I’ve never been made to feel so unwelcome here and I am honestly devastated to have lost what I have always considered “my happy place” and all the rituals and activities we have always enjoyed here. We will not be coming back. Do not expect a good customer service experience. They really do not care about making you feel comfortable or welcome which is the whole point of the hospitality industry.
Very nice hotel
This is a very nice hotel, especially if you love old and/or historical places. I love that you can park right outside of the hotel, providing immediate access to your car. We stayed in the historic inn and I loved that it is small and coffee was at the bottom of the steps every morning. We had a suite but the sofa was old and very uncomfortable.
Bad exxperience with the booking agents
This is not a review of the spa but of the service that books the appointments and communicates with the spa. I called a week before my daughter in law's appointment, knowing that my son and her were traveling and had booked appointments for the spa on her birthday, (she is 7 months pregnant with our second grandchild). I had previously recommended this spa for their appointments. I called the number for the spa and I asked to pay for her Pre-natal massage and a woman named Tiffany took my information and I had her to leave a note for my daughter in law wishing her a Happy Birthday. What a great surprise for her birthday, that her pregnancy massage was paid for! Then I received a call saying they did not have all the info on my credit card. I called back and spoke with Maria, She assured me everything was all set and that the spa would tell them it was paid for with the note Happy Birthday Love from "us". When I did not hear from anyone today, I reached out to my son and asked about the note and asked if his wife liked the birthday present....but he said they had paid in full and never mentioned the Happy Birthday note or that I had paid for her massage. I called the spa immediately and another girl answered. She said Maria was off and forgot to communicate this with the spa!! How utterly disappointing!! One cannot get that moment back. The surprise of a thoughtful birthday gift totally ruined by incompetent staff!! Very very disappointed!!
Awesome experience
Wow! My first time and it will diffidently not be my last night. Champagne when you arrive made a great arrival treat! The room was awesome we had a spa suite. The heated bathroom floor, heated towel rack, robes, turn down service and large balcony and sitting room was wonderful. The bathroom was spectacular. The spa was great and service was spectacular. The ladies locker room was great and the showers are great, I cannot wait to make another trip.
It just keeps getting better!
Boyfriend treated us to a Valentine’s Day getaway. It was perfect; we are still basking in the relaxing vibes. This was our second visit. The package included a bottle of champagne , chocolate strawberries and two spa treatments. We chose the Bliss pedicures for two The spa is an experience in pampering. I can’t say stress enough how much the excellent service at the Inn with every staff contact means to us! They will treat you like royalty. From the check in and being welcomed with the signature champagne drink to every time you pass a member of the team, it is a beautiful experience. I could go on and on but have to mention two of the staff members who made this such a memorable stay. Romario helped me surprise my boyfriend with a gift of the bathrobes from the Acorn store. I let him know we had spa appointments at 1:00 and asked if he could get them and put them in our room while we were out. Ok, he doesn’t just go get them and place them in the room—-he has them beautifully wrapped, adds a handwritten card (he has beautiful handwriting!), rose petals and chocolate kisses on the bed AND a beautiful bottle of champagne with roses next to it. When we went to thank him, he glowed! He was truly happy that he made us happy. Sharnese, at the Madison restaurant, was the other person who went way above and beyond. She was our server for our Valentine’s Day dinner. She was outstanding! Everyone should enjoy being served with such grace and friendliness! The Inn itself is beautiful and wrapped in historic beauty! We stayed in the Blue Village villa. The room is just so luxurious. Heated floors, gas fireplace, beautiful furnishings and top notch linens and toiletries. We cannot wait to go back. We will probably try a summer getaway next time. Although, it is wonderful in the winter. You will not be disappointed!!
Bed Pillows in the cottage rooms really need an upgrade.
we love old edward inn and have stayed there often through the years. we like the cottage rooms. our friends and us agree; however, that the pillows are awful and are entirely inconsistent with the class of the inn. someone needs to go check them out and order new ones. the ones on the beds could have been purchased at the dollar store. come on Old Edwards...you can do better than this.
Relaxing, No Agenda Getaway
Another amazing visit to the Old Edwards Inn. While the weather was warmer and rainy most of our stay, we took advantage of the spa and all the relaxing activities that were offered. We cannot recommend the spa enough - Gray and Amber were top notch! Every meal we ate was delicious from the Spa Cafe to Four65 Bistro to Madison’s. Nothing disappointed! The Hickory rooms were also amazing - perfectly located, beautifully appointed and the bathroom was to die for. Old Edward’s was just the relaxing, quiet, no agenda get away that we needed! We will be back.

Great service and lunch! We have 4 little ones and felt at ease staff was excellent !
Almost impossible to book and no customer service.
I received gift cards from my father for my birthday last month for the spa and a stay. It’s almost impossible to book. Every other weekend is not avail and then there are no availabilities to get a massage on a Saturday. I left two voicemails earlier this week try and get a refund, but no one has called me back.
5th Stay and Only Gets Better!
I just completed my 5th stay at the OEI and the 2nd year in a row for a quiet solo business planning trip for the year ahead. I've found this to be the most incredibly relaxing, peaceful spot to fully unwind and be productive. The temps this year were unfortunately too cold to walk around much or hike, but I'll save that for a fun couples trip this summer. It's just a special place, and all 5 times I've chosen the Falls Cottages for the setting and room/cottage options. Choose carefully on the website, as they do vary quite a bit (bed size, fireplace or not, freestanding or not, separate shower and tub or combo, outdoor space, upstairs or downstairs, etc.). Call them if you aren't sure, as the staff is always very helpful. Although I'll likely be back in the meantime, I just booked my January 2025 stay and am already looking forward to it!
Great experience, choose your room carefully
Overall OEI is terrific. I gave four stars because of one major issue, that is avoidable. PROS: food- Madison’s restaurant is sublime. Food and service were terrific. Could have eaten the whole menu. Service- all the staff were terrific Spa- other than perhaps a little on the small side when lots of people are getting treatments and there are lots of members there, spa was first class CONS: busy: in December it was very busy and often meant a wait at the bar / no tables available at the restaurants with no concessions given to guests Room: we paid for a spa suite which was lovely but every morning and / or night, there was a trash storage below our room where bins of glass bottles were emptied and then power washed and woke us up every day. This was LOUD and I would recommend not staying in these suites.
Nice Inn - but our experience did not live up to our expectations
We booked a two night Joy and Comfort package at the Old Edwards Inn and Spa, a Relais & Châteaux hotel, so our expectations were high. This was our first trip to Highlands, NC. We stayed in a one bedroom suite with king bed at the Lodge. The room was very nice and included a heated floor and towel rack in the large bathroom. Though we received a note from the Inn to turn off the water while brushing our teeth due to an ongoing drought, the luxury multi-head shower burst forth with volumes of comforting water. Our package included a three course dinner at Madison’s and a Spa treatment for each of us. Dinner at Madison’s was phenomenal. Both the food and service were outstanding. The restaurant staff kindly moved us to a nicer table because a family sitting next to us with young children ordered fried food which smelled awful and made my wife nauseous. The food was cooked to perfection and was delicious. Unfortunately our stay wasn’t perfect. The Spa treatments were nice, a facial and a massage, however we were not advised in advance that the men’s whirlpool bath and sauna were closed for renovation. After complaining, we were provided a slight discount for this inconvenience. Also, I had planned to tip our Spa therapist in cash following treatment; however I was told by the Spa staff that the tip was “included” in the Spa treatment package. I was very surprised when I saw the 23% Spa service fee on my final bill at check out. We mentioned the Spa service fee on our bill to the checkout staff but they were indifferent to our concerns. Also, we signed up for and attended the Fireside at the Farm with Mike Kinnebrew Holiday concert. Mike and the band were extraordinary good; however the volume level of the music they played was excessive for the size of the venue and type of music – aka Holiday. I had to remove my hearing aids and my ears still hurt and rang from the loud music. Sadly, we had to leave the concert at intermission due to discomfort. We would not have paid for or attended this event had we known the volume would be so loud. Lastly, the road signs at the Old Edwards Inn and Spa are awful. The lettering is too small to read, not enough contrast and they are non-reflective making seeing them at night nearly impossible. Also, parking attendants at the Mike Kinnebrew concert should wear reflective vests and carry flashlights. Lighting was extremely poor. One concert attendee almost drove over a parking attendant because it was so dark out and the attendants were wearing black clothing. Our over-all experience was good, though we probably won’t be returning. Highlands was nice, but overrated in our opinion. It didn’t help that I was stopped by the Town police less than 30 seconds after we arrived in town and was asked to move my vehicle from in front of the Old Edwards Lodge because I was supposedly blocking traffic. It was a one way road and I had pulled over to the side of the road, so anyone could get past. The actions and words of the Highlands Police seemed excessive and overly aggressive. The highlight of our trip was visiting Dry Falls – a very beautiful waterfall. As always, your mileage may vary.

If you want to be treated like you're special, this is the place to come. No matter who you are, how much you paid for your room, what you're wearing,, etc, Olde Edward's acts like you're a long lost friend who they're just happy to welcome back.
Classy, old school hotel.
This is a top-class hotel. It is very classy. It starts with the welcoming check-in. Old school service, like bag handling, turn down service. Go to the lounge - a great place to hang out at the fireplace. Their restaurant Madison's is also great, either for breakfast or dinner. This was our second time there. We will come back again.
We love visiting at the Old Edwards Inn every year.
Beautiful facilities, excellent dining options, and top notch service. My wife enjoys the spa, I have used the fitness center and I have been to their off-site golf course, which is beautiful. Only place I would stay in Highlands.

Yes! Please ensure your bid amount is large enough to cover prepaid fees, taxes, potential commissions & tips handed out to various parties, etc!
Bids can often go un-filled because the amount is too low.
This one time, we received a $5 bid for a table for 5 people wanting to dine at Carbone NYC.
