Relaxed comfort food
Solid comfort food - meatloaf and chicken pot pie were excellent. Get your egg cream and enjoy a relaxed cozy meal.

We stopped in while waiting for a show at Lincoln Center. We didn't want a full meal. . . just a bite to eat, some drinks and a unique place is always a bonus. Old John's checks all the boxes. We sat at the bar and got to see just how busy this place is and how well it runs. Our bartender/waiter was great. He was juggling a full bar and handling expediting orders to the kitchen and seating customers all at the same time while managing to hold a conversation with us and give us some history of this incredible diner-type luncheonette. Stop in before or after a show, say hello to the locals or the Juilliard student sitting next to you. But don't leave until you try the vodka gimlet.

We wanted to love this little place butโฆ breakfast wait time was insane, food was so so + service was mediocre.

Be the first to ReplyFood ok, Appalling Customer Service
We arrived and were told twice we close at 10pm. We asked twice, does this mean you are still serving food until then or should be leave as it didnโt seem clear. After being ignored for a further few minutes they reluctantly decided to seat us. This should have been the first indicator to leave. Service was slow, which seemed strange given they wanted to keep telling us they closed at 10pm but we eventually got to place an order. There seemed to be some confusion between us ordering cheese burgers and staff believing we ordered cheese toast. I can overlook that - it was likely a communication/ language barrier. What was unacceptable, was then pointing out there was a paper sachet of tomato sauce in the food and being told by staff no there wasnโt and that theyโd be checking CCTV to prove we planted it there! This absurdly continued with staff refusing to engage in discussion until they just asked us to leave. Appalling customer service and lack of integrity. I certainly would not recommend, the food was just ok.. the paper sachet probably added to an otherwise unremarkable dish.

Clearly a renovated space but still a nice place for brunch. Enjoyed my gimlet & Manhattan especially. Shakshuka worked for me today. Very light.
Be the first to ReplyA calm gem
There is nothing particularly innovative here but everything we had was very well done and the service was exceptional. We sat inside in a calm clean dining room which though small did not seem in any way cramped. This is the sort of place you go with family and friends where the food has to be good but is not the prime subject of conversation. The Aperol Spritz and mint lemonade were very good and beers were served in chilled glasses. Water was topped up regularly but not disruptively so. The Greek and Caesar salads were very good.

Iโve been spending a ton of money lately!! I bought a hat of Steve O who I have been watching a lot of!! I saw Jackass Forever and I had to watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians for a class and I thought the kardashians were harder to watch than the other one!! If you donโt know what jackass forever is look it up and itโll make more sense!! Anyway I came here yesterday with my grandma because we were going to see mr Meme himself Nicolas Cage at the AMC near this place!! My grandma got a burger and I got rigatoni a la vodka!! I love vodka sauce and it was good quality for a diner!! The waiter was cool!! I also got mint lemonade which was very refreshing!! My grandma enjoyed it and so did I!! The food did take a while to come out but it gave me more time to talk to my grandma!!

Having been to Old John's frequently for over ten years, on my return to the city after a five year absence, I was delighted to find the quality of this ordinary-seeming luncheonette up to my memories. While the menu is mostly comfort food, it is all well done. For example, the orange juice for breakfast is really fresh-squeezed. If one is looking for a reasonably priced meal in a "sit down" restaurant near Lincoln Center, one could not do better.
Be the first to ReplyFriendly authentic NYC diner
From the weak coffee to the French toast and scrambled eggs, this is a classic NYC diner. Very friendly waitstaff and the food was ready in minutes.
Be the first to ReplyGreat to see this neighborhood standby back in business!
Reopened and updated a bit. Can also sit outside and that is nice as it is on a side street. Had a good chicken soup and greek salad and a veggie burger. Also, a strawberry shortcake for desert. I am very happy to see this place back up and running again.
Be the first to ReplyThe best diner in NY!
Old John's is the perfect NY diner. The food is impeccable. No matter what you order, everything is good. Blueberry pancakes are unbeatable, Spanish omelette perfect every time, the meatloaf and chili are soul warming and they make the best burger in NY. I wouldn't trade their chicken noodle for anything on a cold winter day or sick afternoon. The staff is kind and attentive, they will always put a smile on your face. The definition of comfort food, Old John's always feels like home and the staff like family.

Found this place after visiting the Kelly and Ryan show. Great variety to choose from and breakfast all day! Food was great and service was good. Enjoyed the Classic Diner atmosphere and affordable prices. enjoyed talking to the staff and other locals in the restaurant. My idea of a New York Diner!
Be the first to ReplyGood food and friendly service
Had an after theater dinner there and was pleasantly surprised. Atmosphere was not fancy but the service was very efficient and the staff very friendly. They greeted the regulars and engaged in short conversations with them. The lemon chicken was very flavorful and tender and the vegetables freshly made. No wonder thayโve been in business for 30 years!
Be the first to ReplyQuiet, comfortable, classic friendly NYC diner
Classic diners are losing customers and closing in the New York city area. So I'm glad to see Old John's on the scene. I asked, and the staff told me that it's been open for some thirty years. The wait staff is patient and friendly, and seem to enjoy working together. During our Friday dinnertime visit, I noticed that many others were repeat customers, sometimes calling the staff by name.
It's smaller and quieter than most Manhattan diners. My friend and I took our time, and no one rushed us out. The menu has fewer items than I've seen at larger diners do, but all the major diner food groups are represented (all-day breakfasts, salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, entrees, beef, chicken, veal, seafood, pasta, deserts).
My Cobb Salad and mashed potatoes were competent in the classic diner style. But what makes John's special is the service.
I plan to return, because I liked everything about it.
Highly overrated
This place was recommended by a friend, but I checked with Trip Advisor anyway to be sure. Since visitors also had rated it highly, I took a group of friends there on a Sunday afternoon. The food, the service and the ambiance all disappointed. If the food is good I can usually overlook the rest. But the food here was bland and tasteless; just as it looked on the plate when it was served. While most of my guests ordered burgers (to mixed reviews), I had the stuffed pork chop. In this case it came out looking good but was a disappointment as to taste, texture and quality. The meat was tough and fatty, and the stuffing was some sort of mushy mixed vegetables. The (instant) mashed potatoes were watery and the mixed vegetables on the side had dried out and then were reheated prior to serving. The server asked repeatedly for what was being ordered by whom, and then had to ask who gets what when the food came. Maybe it was just a bad day all around when I went, but Iโm not interested in giving it another try.

Stopped here for lunch and got there right before the lunch crowd. Seems like a spot for all the locals. The waiters were great and seemed to know everyoneโs name around us. Classic diner foods, fair prices. We had the soup and sandwich special. Service was quick, which is good on the account that the space itself was a little tight.
