Down the Swanee
We booked the Garden Suite for three nights and the room was on appearance very nice until we discovered the outside light did not work [It being an annexe] and though reported was not fixed during our stay and could not get in without using the light from our mobile phones. The rubbish bin was broken and there was no plug in the bath and that was not replaced till a day and a half into our stay and then it did not fit. There was a dripping tap in the bathroom sink and the maintenance man turned up to fix it then went off to find a washer and never returned. We had one meal in the hotel with their 'Pie and pint' offer and had to wait 45 minutes before being served and when it did both pies were burnt so did not repeat the experience. In the time we were there piles of cigarette dog ends in pots of rain water were placed at the entrances to the reception and never cleaned out as were glasses and plates on the garden tables. As for breakfast on one of the mornings the produce was obviously old and the last one we had to wait so long to be served we had to leave without having it. They had a chance to redeem themselves as we left a phone charger in our room and rang to ask it to be posted back to us which of course they did not. The staff were friendly and helpful as best they could under circumstances as it is obviously understaffed which must be down to the owners who have ripped the soul out of what was once a great old inn.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday night away in the Cotswolds
Spent a lot of money on a very poor dining experience, both evening meal and breakfast. Everything left us very angry and disappointed, for what should have been the perfect night away in the Cotswolds. Wont be rushing back. Toilet didn't work in the bedroom either.
Be the first to ReplyNice staff, nice location, below average dining
This was our third (and based on this weekendโs experience) our last visit to this beautifully located pub with rooms. Accommodation is very tired, but ultimately it was the awful food that let it down โฆ when I booked, the package inclusion was โSuperb three-course dinner in the restaurantโ โฆ a number of the limited menu options were not available and choices were mediocre pies and/or fried stuff. What should have been a celebratory few days away wasnโt.

Be the first to ReplyA wonderful English Christmas experience in the Cotswolds!
Our American family booked the Christmas package to celebrate the holiday with my senior citizen parents, 2 college kids, my adult sister and my husband and I. Our group of 7 had 4 rooms in the Old Swan. We were greeted with champagne on arrival in the quaint pub. Our beautiful rooms were clean, comfortable and charming. With the package, we all had a Christmas gift bag awaiting us in each room that had a print of the Old Swan, local chocolates and cookies in an adorable Christmas tin, the local gin drinks, a lovely candle and a live Christmas tree! It was so sweet! The food was incredible! We had the full English breakfast and the 5 course holiday meals were abundant and delicious with champagne at every meal! The live music set the holiday mood and the Christmas crackers were a fun new tradition we learned about! It really gave us a warm traditional English country Christmas! We walked down the road of the picturesque village of Minster Lovell that was out of a story book to the super cool ruins of the old mansion. We came back to the roaring fire in the huge fireplace of the tavern and then went upstairs to our quaint rooms. The staff really went out of their way to cater to our every need including special dietary considerations (one of our party had a gluten allergy and they always made sure to address and accommodate her at every meal). We highly recommend the hotel, food, staff and experience! It couldn't have been better!
Be the first to ReplyNice pub, food good but poor value
We went to the Old Swan for a Saturday lunch as we were in the area. The pub is clean and warm with log fires. Their pies seemed to be a speciality on the menu so we decided this would be a good filling lunch as we were hungry. After 30 minutes wait we had to chase it up and it arrived 10 minutes later - the pub was not hugely busy so our order must have been overlooked. At first glance the meal was well presented but looked very โnouvelle cuisineโ. However while obviously home cooked and tasting good- the quantity was very disappointing. Pie was small, one small amount of mash, one carrot cut in half and a little kale. My partner was still hungry afterwards and at ยฃ20 for each meal with an additional 10% service charge, we felt this was not good value for a pub lunch - so we would not go back to eat. Such a shame as a nice pub!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Service, location and food.
We booked for 15 people, with group size we were looked after by the events team. Of course pre-order is better for both family and restaurant with this quantity and Becki supported throughout the process. On the Night Tibby gave the best head waiter service I have seen in UK, with Natasha looking after us with drinks. The result was a very relaxed meal with good food, service and Environment. Would recommend.

We love this place and always look forward to returning. The pub has a lovely atmosphere with genuinely friendly staff who make you feel at home with their relaxed approach. The rooms are well appointed and be prepared for plenty of squeaky floorboardโs ! One point to note that the stairs from the pub to the roomโs are spiral and fairly steep which may not suit anyone with knee/hip issues. The food is nice - maybe a little pricey for some choices - and the breakfast is fantastic. Well worth trying for your next break in the Cotswolds.
Be the first to Reply1 star food and service 5 star prices
What a rip off. ยฃ14 for a glass of average wine. Dinner was a joke, menu was pathetic and how do you get a chocolate brownie served cold. Come on!! If we had not paid for 3 nights, would leave tomorrow. Rooms very tired. Not worth a stay. No vibe at all. Itโs as though there is no soul to this place. Most disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyGreat team and very impressed with our stay
We stayed here between Xmas and new year last minute for 2 nights as booked Blenheim palace and light trail. due to availability we stayed first night in countryman room which has four poster bed and Lovell with super king on second night. Both rooms were lovely. We ate dinner both nights as food was so good. Didnโt feel the need to look elsewhere. Went over to sister hotel next door for a cocktail before dinner. Breakfast was also lovely. All members of staff were very friendly and always helpful. Would like to give a big shout out to Neve as nothing was too much trouble and to the housekeeper who turned around the bedrooms to a very high standard for us. Would definitely stay again
Be the first to ReplyA lovely place to be.
We had a wonderful meal at The Old Swan this weekend. The food was delicious and the service was brilliant. We really enjoyed the pies and the hot chocolate brownie sundae. A lovely setting and a lovely place to unwind.
Be the first to ReplyGood for an Oxford visit
Had stayed here before and was convenient for Oxford if not wanting to stay in city centre. Used park and ride which was efficient. Very pleasant hotel but dinner menu limited in Old Swan. After one pie meal (very good) we ate at the sister hotel The Mill. Bathroom in our room could benefit with a bit of maintenance (shower head leaked and basin taps very stiff). I would return.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful hotel
We have just got home from a 3 night stay here and I cannot fault the hotel or the service at all ! The staff work very hard and were all polite and greeted us with a smile . There is a windy staircase ( but also a back staircase which is less steep from the car park) but the staff offered to carry our bags up. The rooms were beautiful, spotlessly clean and the bed was so comfortable . We ate here one night and the Chicken and Ham pie was amazing as were the breakfasts which we had included in our stay . The hotel is perfectly situated for Bourton on the Water , Stow on the Wold, Blenheim Palace and Oxford . Would definitely recommend a stay here .
Be the first to ReplyCharacter but needs modernising.
Lovely old inn in pretty village. Staff were welcoming and rooms light, but need refurbishment. Original room small with 4 hangers and they changed it for a larger one with king sized bed. But shower inadequate, one of taps too stiff, heated towel rail not working and no other heating in en suite. Good Wi-Fi and tea/ coffee. Very good breakfast but evening meal menu very limited, little other than pies. Enjoyed the stay but wouldnโt go again.
Be the first to ReplyWe enjoyed our stay in the lovely country inn, but would not recommend.
I am very conflicted writing this review because overall we did enjoy our stay at the Old Swan. The charm and history of the place just overwhelmed its other issues. The good - overwhelmingly authentic country inn with such amazing ambience. The circular staircase up to the rooms is just as good as it gets for authenticity. Location is in a nice quiet village on a quiet street (I was worried this was on a main road). The bed, despite thinking initially it was too soft, was extremely comfortable and we slept very well. The shower was also really good. The bad - staff service for the hotel - we walked in with a large suitcase and there were 3 staff members at the far end of the room, who looked at us and then just ignored us, not even a hello. I had to walk over to ask to be checked in and then it seemed to be putting them out to check us in. This was a continued problem for any stay related issues in that the staff seemed not to care about the guest. On the other hand, our service and food at breakfast was really good (different people). The rooms were also not that clean with cobwebs on the light fixtures and many stains on the carpet. Given the price they charge for the rooms I would expect better customer service and cleanliness. Further to the point of hotel service I sent an email to them several days ago before writing this review and they have not responded to my feedback. I provide very objective feedback trying to help places I stay and this place doesnt seem to care. Disappointing. Did we enjoy our stay in the lovely inn, yes. Would we recommend you go, sadly no. With just a little more attention to the guest and cleanliness this could be a 5 star place.
Be the first to ReplyCharming place to stay
Great location near the river, interesting local walks to nearby ruined hall, very friendly staff and nice food. The log fire in February was very nice to sit by with a Gin. The breakfast was great too.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Hotel, tired and dated rooms.
This hotel was stunning. On arrival we were very happy with our choice. Exactly what you would expect from a country hotel in the Cotswolds. The staff were very welcoming and helpful however on checking in we were very disappointed. We booked a superior room and the room we were given looked absolutely nothing like the pictures on the website. It was tiny, very tired and dated decor. The paint was peeling off the walls and the furniture was so old. I understand this is a period hotel but the images on the website were of a beautifully decorated large spacious room. This was not. I complained to receptionist and we were given a different room. Which I did appreciate. But it was not ideal. The restaurant however was amazing. The food was delicious and one of the best pies Iโve ever eaten.
Be the first to ReplyPoor Service for the price
Birthday trip was a bit of a disappointment! This is a stunning old Inn in a fabulous location and the room was comfortable and characterful, and the birthday chocolates were a lovely, much appreciated touch. But it is a shame that some of the staff do not match the promise of the location. On the first night we ate in the dining room and whilst my fish pie was excellent, my wife's single vegetarian option (not the pie) was very dull. The desserts were quite honestly dreadful, the Baked Alaska was of a standard that suggested that it had been bought in from "Iceland" and the chocolate brownie sundae could have come from McDonalds. To cap it off we were the last couple in the dining room so the lad started extinguishing the candles and clearing up around us. In contrast on the second night we asked to eat in the bar in an attempt at more atmosphere and the girl who sorted it could not have been nicer and was delightful all evening - we do not want fawning, but it is nice to be served with a warm smile and a bit of chat. Both pies were excellent, but given that my wife had now eaten every vegetarian meal available it is just as well we were only staying two nights. We had learnt our lesson and did not have dessert. Similarly, the breakfasts were good but the service mixed. It was January in a listed building and yet the only laid table left was next to a draughty window. When we asked if we could move the request was met with a face that looked like we'd offered a bucket of cold sick. In the end amongst much hurumphing we moved ourselves. Then the 'waitress' came to take our order and she could not have been nicer, again such a contrast. Second breakfast again 'sour face' appeared to be in charge and lovely waitress saved the day. However, my wife ordered avocado on sourdough but was delivered smoked salmon and avocado on sourdough. We did not want to create a fuss but I am convinced that the offending salmon was just removed in the kitchen and the plate returned as it smelt strongly of salmon. Overall, it was disappointing that a supposedly 5 Star hotel did not live up to expectations. We did feedback direct to the hotel as requested before posting this review, to give them a chance to respond, but nothing!

excellent friendly staff quiet location only negative the stairs are very narrow and tricky especially if one is not fully mobile and difficult to manage with luggage Sister hotel is next door with other facilities if required

Absolutely beautiful hotel, staff vey welcoming and the food was excellent. I had the smoked haddock pie which was outstanding. Stunning building and rooms to match. Lovely open fire which fine a pint of ale.
Be the first to ReplyTasty beef pie.
We had a wonderful evening meal, we stepped in out of the rain and enjoyed a lovely beef pie, the service was good considering it was quite busy, the food was tasty and hot. No complaints at all, we would go back. We found the beef pie very tasty, the mash was lovely and buttery.
Be the first to ReplyA pre-Christmas stay at the Old Swan
This was such a lovely stay in a very interesting and historic building. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and the atmosphere in the bar / restaurant was delightful with a real fire and well-behaved dogs lying in front of it. I'd definitely come back!
Be the first to ReplyFabulous location, high standard of accommodation & friendly, competent staff.
Minster Lovell is an easily reached historical village on the edge of the Cotswolds. Visit The Hall and experience a slice of history. Wander around the Mill & use the spa at the sister hotel. The staff at the Old Swan are friendly and helpful.

Be the first to ReplyOverpriced poor quality packet food and terrible customer service
Absolutely awful! We visited for a family meal in June, we were put in a corner by the kitchen door which was dark and a high traffic area. The staff were rude from the outset, it was really poor customer service, they were quite unwelcoming and unfriendly they didnโt explain the specials, or provide a drinks menu, but were quite put out when they took our drinks order and we asked questions about what drinks they had. The menu was limited and pretentious, it was extremely overpriced. They didnโt cater well for vegetarians at all! They had the same dish listed twice on the menu for a different price, ยฃ14 If you had pitta (cut up) smashed avocado, hummus and olives or ยฃ17 is you had the same thing but an uncut pitta?! This was the only thing on the menu I was able to eat, I asked if the hummus was homemade as Iโm allergic to a preservative chemical in factory made dips, it was not homemade so I asked for the dish without hummus, when it arrived I tried the โsmashed avocadoโ it was immediately obvious this was not a smashed avocado, I asked the waiter if it was homemade, he assured me it was, before coming back and telling me, no it had come out of a packet - ยฃ17 for a pitta, some olives and two packet dips is outrageously over priced. I told the waiter I was unable to eat the meal, or anything else on the menu, he did not offer any alternatives or ask what I could eat so he could ask the kitchen to make me something quickly. He only offered to take the plate away. He came back later and generously offered to take my meal off the bill, he was very pleased with himself for this offer - but there was no way I was paying ยฃ17 for one mouthful of a meal Iโm allergic to! Throughout the meal the staff were very inattentive, they left dirty plates on our table from course to course, food that was not on the menu kept being brought out to other tables but we were not informed of any other options. The food for the other members of the group was incredibly salty, I tried a mouthful of my partners side salad and it was disgustingly salty, I thought I was being over sensitive as I do not eat salt or add it to my food, but there was a big salt eater in our group and she even said it was inedible! Before we left I went to the loo, on my way I walked past a tiny specials sign which contained food I could have eaten, but had not been told about! Over all it was a terrible experience, awful customer service, overpriced food of poor quality! There are loads of much nicer pubs in the area, I would recommend avoiding this pub!
