This place was recommended as one of the most romantic
This place was recommended as one of the most romantic restaurants in nyc & I agree! The ambiance is super romantic. Gorgeous interior - candlelight, fresh roses and chandeliers. The food was just ok, at the price point we paid.. Drinks were solid and the service was good..
Be the first to ReplyThe food was so over rated.
I don't understand how this place is packed. I was really expecting a nice romantic time with my boyfriend but the servers are so rude I kept flagging down service. No one came to check on us. And did I mention this place is racist. Not it
Be the first to Reply27 years ago the Beef Wellington was to die for.
So yes, to expect no changes in quality in a quarter century would be a little naive. We had the 4 course tasting menu. The seared foi gras was probably the best dish of the night. My wife's crab and papaya was refreshing but not great. The cavatelli dish was very boring. Not once during our meal did the wait staff come by and ask if wee wanted salt, pepper, parmesan, if the the food was good. I think they knew the answer. The star of the show which was supposed to be the Wellington clearly had an "understudy". The filet was slightly over cooked. The puff pasty was soggy and the texture and quantity of the mushrooms were lacking. But wait there is a fourth. The desserts were uninspiring. The classic chocolate soufflรฉ came out quickly which was surprising. It tasted like it had been microwaved. The Dulce was bland. We had the wine pairing. We decided to let the waitress ( not sommelier because there was none) do the pairing. She suggested we sample different wines with each course, which sounded like a good idea. The dessert wines highlight the choices we were presented along the way. A Taylor port and a wine from Long Island that tasted like simple syrup. Can't make this up. Setting screams romance. Food and service screams avoid. So sad.

A fantabolous birthday evening celebration for my mom at the perfect place. Service was impeccable, ambiance enchanting, and food was stupendous. My mother and I really enjoyed ourselves. It's definitely well worth the experience, and I look forward to coming back in the future. Special thanks to staff for taking special care of my mom and I. Always genuine love.

My wife and I came here for our 6th wedding anniversary and had a lovely time. Orchid was a phenomenal server and was incredibly attentive throughout our entire meal. She made some great food and wine suggestions that elevated our experience that much more and we really enjoyed conversing with her!Our food tasted great - notably the Hamachi, potato soup and roasted chicken - and I don't think there was a bad dessert on the menu (and that's coming from someone who doesn't normally eat desserts). As others have mentioned, the ambience is also very romantic and the historic elements of the place add a nice touch to it, so if you're a fan of 18th and 19th century dรฉcor, you are in for a treat. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other notable event.

This is for their brunch event, which, at $70pp is probably 3 times what it should've been (on top of the 40/pp music charge). The salads and burrata were sad. Beef Wellington was good but the garnish of one!! (what looked like a) boiled carrot was embarrassing. The service was pleasant, so I'll give them that.
Be the first to ReplyI went here for the the special Valentine 4 course meal.
This place was recommended as one of the most romantic restaurants in nyc & I definitely agree. First course: Seared hudson valley foie gras & Hamachi sashimi. Second course: Cavatelli pasta & Italian milk burrata. Third course: Rack of colorado lamb & Beef Wellington. Dessert: Chocolate souffle, Chocolate mousse, & Crรจme brรปlรฉeThe food was delicious and the service was amazing. The ambiance is super romantic. Would I come back? Definitely
Be the first to ReplyCozy ambience, great food and service.
Strongly recommend, especially for date night!
Be the first to ReplyI will be a repeat customer.
Food, atmosphere & service was exceptional. Orchid, the manger, and her crew runs a wonderful business. The head chef has been there 20 years and the food reflects that. They asked me how I'd like my Wellington cooked and I replied "make it the chefs selection". Came out beautifully. We didn't like the Cavatelli pasta, they replaced it with the Fusilli Calabrese which was a great dish. Drinks were great too. Ambiance of the place is intimate and quiet. I approve.

This is truly a must for any special occasion. Staff is fantastic and welcoming and the food is superb. They made us feel really special for our anniversary.

Gorgeous interior! It was very romantic - candlelight and fresh roses and chandeliers for days. The food was just ok, at the price point we paid (you have a choice of two different price fixed menus) I was hoping to be more wowed.I started with the foie gras which was great, then the truffle pasta (not salty and more bland than I was hoping for) and ended with the beef Wellington. The steak was chewy and not as flavorful as I hoped for. I would recommend only coming here for drinks which have as a first come first serve basis.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent restaurant!! Beautiful, dim lit, two-leveled
Excellent restaurant!! Beautiful, dim lit, two-leveled space with impressive chandeliers. I can see why it is noted as one Manhattan's most romantic restaurant. Friendly and attentive wait staff. Food was excellent. We did the 4 course pre-fixe menu and ordered fusilli, lamb sausage, beet salad, burrita, rack of lamb and rack of pork.
Be the first to ReplyI hate to say it, but I think this establishment has gone
I hate to say it, but I think this establishment has gone downhill. The quality of food/wine, portion size, and service are all a bit disappointing - especially when you're paying $2-300pp.We both had the 7 course tasting menu, a couple of cocktails, and tried to have a bottle of wine.Per the tasting menu - none of the meals were particularly memorable and the portions consistently small. The hamachi, scallops, and foie gras were decent, but again unremarkable. The most disappointing item was definitely the bass which lacked any flavor, even after adding salt. Then, we were disappointed to find the beef wellington had been over cooked and dried out (cooked medium-well, but ordered medium-rare). Interesting enough, the highlight of the tasting menu was the coconut sorbet palate cleanser.Unlike our experience with the food, we very much enjoyed the cocktails. The 3 if by Pina was a hit, highly recommend it. In terms of the wine, they ended up being out of the bottle we ordered and brought a replacement that unfortunately wasn't for us. To be honest, I was surprised that a bottle marked up 500% from $14 to $90 was not more palatable, given it was recommended. On the bright side, they professionally allowed us to send the bottle back, which we very much appreciate.Overall, the space is still charming, the cocktails are well done, but the food and wine are disappointing. ย I am hoping this was a fluke or they can turn this around - my wife and I used to love coming here.
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend and I are incredibly underwhelmed by this
My boyfriend and I are incredibly underwhelmed by this restaurant. Saddening, because we've been anticipating this restaurant for months. The best things we ate were the desserts. 1. We both ordered beef wellingtons. 1 medium rare which came rarer than it should and the crust was raw. 1 medium well which was dry. 2. The appetizer were so underwhelming and under seasoned we had the scallops and the octopus. The octopus was over salted and the scallops lacked salt. We had different waiters for every dish which is fine but waiters kept being stiff we didn't order. I'd think one waiter is better since they'll know what we ordered and not keep being 3 separate dishes and drinks we didn't want. A bit of a mess. The place seemed stuffy and pretentious at the very end.
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I had an unforgettable night here on Thursday.
Everything from the moment we walked in was amazingly beautiful. The service was next level and the food was delicious. Thank you for making our last night in NYC amazing.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful, cozy, romantic restaurant.
Fancy, very expensive, but a nice experience. The candle on the table was a bit blinding for some reason haha, but the food and wine were good. Great place to celebrate a special occasion. Wish I got pics of the food and more photos inside but these will have to do! Also they brought me the wrong dessert but fixed it to bring the right one out which I appreciated even though I didn't feel like eating it anymore. I got the beet salad and gnocchi which were yummy, and not the norm for me to order.
Be the first to ReplyI spent my first night of a much needed vacation at this
I spent my first night of a much needed vacation at this beautiful romantic restaurant with my husband.. $400 later I was waiting for my change to arrive so I could add to the tip when my waitress returned all of my money stating that 'the tip wasn't included'.. meaning that she thought that the change was her tip and she considered it to be not enough for her. To say that we were upset and disrespected is an understatement. First night of my first night out with my husband in a long time.. ruined. Thanks
Be the first to ReplyImpeccable! Everything was first class & top notch.
From the red roses on the table to the butter they served the croissants (which were so flaky & delicious they melt in your mouth) with, everything at One if By Land, Two if By Sea is done with perfection

3.5 stars. We came for a romantic dinner before the Christmas holidays. It was decorated nicely with the ornate Christmas decorations. The food was excellent and the tasting menu service lasted close to 3 hours. I just wish the staff did a better job explaining what each item was we were eating instead of just delivering the plates and stuff walking away. Considering the hefty price for a tasting menu, I was hoping for better service in that regard.

200 per person felt very steep when the quality of the food is comparable to an Applebees... I have been to far more romantic restaurants where both the quality of food and service are superior to this place. Highly disappointing experience. So many other great restaurants in the area, keep researching, you will find a better place to spend your evening!
Be the first to ReplyIt was a solid restaurant, and the food was really good.
But, for $200/person, I expected the food and the service to be outstanding. The service was absolutely no different than your average NYC restaurant. No one suggested wine pairings or checked up on us. No one asked if we would like another glass of wine once we finished our first glass. We also had to chase down our server to pay the bill. It's a shame because the atmosphere of this place is amazing, and I'd come back with my girlfriends, but never at this price point.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful and unique space, which is ideal for dates.
The food was good, but a bit expensive. The Beef Wellington is the best I've had in the city.Only the Valentine's menu was available when we went, which cost $200 per person and consists of 4 courses. All of the food was good, but not good enough for the price tag in my opinion. The normal Prix Fixe and Tasting Menus are more affordable. Our service was good, and the servers were attentive, but the timing between each course was quite slow. Our server did recognize and apologize for this.
Be the first to ReplyNothing romantic about this place.
Seated in a hot small room with the next table literally right on top of you. It's a Friday night and Valentine's Day is Monday so my fiancรฉ and I wanted to enjoy a night out. It was a set menu and no substitutions . Zero small tasting for the table nothing ... ย burrata was small and not fresh . Scallops: 2 scallops that had a horrible iodine taste. That was a bust . Sea bass was like eating a bland frozen fish. Last but not least coconut sorbet nothing to brag about. I really wanted to like this place but the food was so unappetizing & tasteless.

We don't usually take chances on an untried restaurant for a big event. Events don't get much bigger than the night of your 50th wedding anniversary, but we took a chance on "One if by Land, Two if by Sea."Mainly because we just don't eat at Manhattan's magnificent eateries, so we had no experience to back up out choice. Weeks ago, I ran across an article saying that this restaurant was voted the fifth most romantic spot in the planet, I decided that this would be it.We were quite early, due to our room clock in the hotel running an hour fast, but that worked to our advantage, because we were given particularly good seats, with a view to the lit courtyard next door. ย Extra kudos to the hostess, who noticed us wandering around Barrow Street, looking for the entrance. Just as we were seated, the live pianist began playing Ripple, my favorite Grateful Dead song, and the magic began. They were well aware of our occasion, and the quiet young waitress even told us they were honored to serve us.We were slated for the three course dinner, and began with scallops for me and tuna tartare for Donna. Both were excellent and artfully presented. My big sea scallops were served with two excellent sauces. Next we were served Beef Wellington for me and bronzino for her. I have only had that dish twice in my life, and this will be the one that sets the standard. Even Donna, who is not an enthusiast for beef, said it was amazing. Perfect medium rare with delicious flaky crust. Finally, the desserts were the perfect cap for the evening. I had the chocolate souffle and she had the berry sundae. The cocktails and wine were generally pricy but generous and perfect for the occasion. As we were midway through our desserts they brought out a tray with 2 candles, cookies and a 50th anniversary greeting. Just then, the magic was complete when the snow started falling in the courtyard, matched to the piano music. Our wedding in 1972 was something we are still proud of. We opted for a back yard event, and had perfect weather (It was Phoenix. You could do that in January). The Golden Anniversary had to be something truly special, and One is by Land delivered. I am only giving them 5 stars because Yelp doesn't allow for 6.
Be the first to ReplyWe had the tasting menu and the wine pairing.
Service was very good, and some of the dishes were good, but some were kind of hilarious. The first course, tuna tartare, was basically poke with the seaweed salad at the bottom. Portions were also quite small, although you do fill up as it goes and I had 2 rolls so I was full in the end. The beef Wellington was the best dish in the whole menu. The fish course (halibut) in my opinion was the worst, the texture of the fish was tough and dry. I'd recommend for a romantic date or a girls night out. If I go again I'd go for the prix fixe instead of the tasting menu, and avoid the halibut.
